They tailored the Varicam LT to film and TV production but the uptake has been slower than the camera deserves so now they’re finding a way to approach the market underneath that. Extremely smart move by Panasonic and Mitch deserves a round of applause.

I don't understand the Panasonic hate. Everything they put out is a reliable workhouse and at this new price the LT is SOLID AF. Remember original C300 came out at $18k. Seems like all the disparaging comments are coming from weekend warriors or low-end producers who'd prefer to gamble with their business/production on something like kinefinity.

      C. Miller: Yer absolutely right. Check the specs; C200 vrs. VariCam LT. Look at the footage. Check the use of the dual ISO. You really gonna pick the FS7 over this???

Except mine won't power on anymore for no reason whatsoever. Just happened today. I thought I had a dead battery (obviously no big deal), but upon changing to a fresh one, it wouldn't turn on. No damage, it didn't take a fall, no power surges as it was on DC power, it wasn't hot in the studio. It simply died.

If they're still making money on it at the lower price point, that means they were overcharging for it before. Otherwise, it's good that they're recognizing a shift in the market and are responding to it.

You still have to buy at least two proprietary P2 cards, cardreader and viefinder and its is another 7000 so they definitely making good money. And the whole set is still above 20k still more expensive that FS-7 and I don't see where it is better. Am seriously tempted by this camera, even though it’s 4 year old tech and underwhelming specs, this is a proper , sturdy, shoulder friendly camera with a gorgeous filmic image, way better than Canon or Sony, except Venice. This sensor is fantastic, one can really shoot at 2500 ISO, which is 3 stops better than most cine cameras. If it had internal 12 bit 4444 it would be a go for me, still tempted... specs aren’t everything,... hard to look past the fact that compressed raw is becoming the new standard, and 6 or 8 k sensors must be coming, in cameras with useable autofocus...

Still overpriced. After adding in the cost of a viewfinder, and media, you are looking at over $16,000+, for a 4 year old camera with a 6 year old sensor in it. And thats not even including a lens, handgrip, or the shoulder mount VCT plate.
You could get a Sony FX9 or Canon C300mkiii, (both of which at least come with an lcd viewfinder) ready to go out of the box WITH a lens for about $3000 less.
If they would price this VariCam at $10,000 or $11,000 WITH the accessories like viewfinder, handgrip, and VCT included, then it would be justly price. But now? Its still overpriced and I can't really see why anyone would choose this camera when they could get newer, more featured cameras like the FX9 or C300mkiii for less..

      @KrunoslavStifter 5 лет назад

@@reynoldsc GH5 was a success no doubt, although pricey considering the sensor size, it had enough of other things going for it and affordable price point, but I'm not so sure about L-mount. Word on the street is that its not selling well at all. Even SH-1 announcement was lukewarm and people asking for all the specs, which seem to be missing. IBIS, crop in 4K 60p, AF performance, RAW recording etc.
No doubt they invested a lot in L-mount, maybe that is why we are seeing drastic price drop for Varicam. Maybe they need cash injection. With so much competition now and more on the way, I think Panasonic will have to offer either more value or lower prices on their cameras.
The thing that I always saw as problem for L-mount in particular is that there are four companies sharing profits, and that means it will always have to be on expensive side. Panasonic making the body and some of the lenses, Sigma making lenses, Leica offering basically their branding, and Sony making sensor and EVF. When you divide that pie and expect everyone to make a profit, you know the prices will not be friendly to users. Unless the alliance can offer some truly innovative new tech at affordable prices, I am skeptical how profitable that venture will be.
I expect the price drop just as we see here, sooner than new innovative tech that would make people pay for it. But I could be wrong. Lets see how it goes in the next six months. Sony is also expected to release new products by the end of the year and I know some people are holding on purchase to see what happens

This is why I'm not a fan of Panasonic. Its not the products , its their salesmen team. Always either patronizing choices of others or making their product seem like its made by the gods themselves.
Its a great camera, but why would you lover the price as much unless you were not selling it well? I hear that Panasonic is not selling their new L-mount camera and lenses that well either. Could that be the reason. There is more and more competition on the market affordable is not what I link to Panasonic. Even GH5 is pretty expensive for the sensor, but probably their best selling camera at the moment. And L-mount is definitely on the pricey point for what is offers. I think Panasonic better start delivering more value or reducing prices soon. Maybe this is just a tip of the ice berg. Lets see if other cameras go on sale as well.

@@scottslotterbeck3796 Is that the best argument you have? Sony fanboy. That is the equivalent of me calling you hater because you don't agree with me. So are you a hater, or you got something valuable to say? Fanboy.
And for the record GH5 when it was released was over 2K if you include V-log. Low light performance was subpar and auto focus was not reliable. And while it was offering more pro video features against competition it was not offering advantages where competition was better and cheaper with larger senors. If you do only manual focus and you mainly work with it in controlled lighting situation than even at 2K for MFT sensor it was a good deal because other cameras with 4K60p 4:2:2 10bit etc were more expensive. But GH5 was not a camcorder it was a mirrorless MFT camera with advance video features. So it will be compared weather you like it or not with other cheaper and in some ways more capable mirrorless cameras.
And if it was and is amazing camera for everyone than why would it drop 25% in price from its original release. Release Price: $1,997.99 + V-log 100$ Price now: $1,497.99 Price drop: $500.00 (25%)
Much like EVA-1 and Vericam, Panasonic was forced to drop the price in order to keep people interested. Now it is a good deal if you need it for what it does well. if you need more its better deal than 2K but it still lacks low light performance and autofocus system you can rely on. For some this is important and for others it is not. So how do you calculate value, it depends on your needs. Not fanboy status. Hater.

And in between are Blackmagic and some others guys that really make no impact in the medium, along with some new Chinese newcomers with growingly better and better products that sooner or later will threaten the whole hierarchy, and either 1) push everyone's prices down across the board, or 2) eat-away some of the stablished names (Panasonic included that should give up already and concentrate on their consumer grade hybrid cameras that is what actually still makes them a buck)..

For photography I have Canon and Nikon gear.. used to have Some A-mount for a few years all of which I gave up some time ago since Sony basically abandoned the platform. And I do like Sony's mirrorless cameras line-up, simply not getting into it because I still believe that Canon and Nikon have better glass plus about 70 years+ of history behind them doing them. And as for Cinema Cameras, I've used Canons C700s and C300s and a few times the RED Raven (which I don't particularly like).. I don't own any of these cinema cameras myself. That's it Mr. Detective.

I'm not sure this camera is entirely irrelevant. They use this camera for a few shows like Ozark, 13 Reasons Why, and this the camera was used to film Crazy, Rich, Asians.
