    The Varicam wins in every shot here. Great comparison video. Both cameras do well in low light but the shadow detail in and lack of noise reduction make the Varicam make it far more superior. Especially for a 10bit 422 image. There's something about Panasonic's sensors that make them unique in it's look.

      Agreed. The Panasonic just looks more textured and interesting. I’ve recently got into raw recording and it looks even better. Thanks for watching

      @@AlexDerrick_DPliterally just did a shoot using raw via Ninja v and my goodness. I have so much latitude and post. I shot on a gloomy day and I still had a lot of Shadow detail I can't wait to pull out.

      I wanted to ask you. If the LT comes with an IR cut filter why do we need another one?

    Fun test. Preferred Varicam in every shot. Especially the guy on the floor. It really sees into the shadows quite well.

    I consistently liked B more. I noticed it has a nicer rollof in the shadows, V-log actually adds saturation the darker an image gets which is a very nice characteristic. Highlights looked slightly softer too. Why'd you shoot the Sony in S-cinetone? Also I just noticed you used Primers luts. What do you think of them? I'm eying them too.

    • @AlexDerrick_DP
      @AlexDerrick_DP  Год назад +1

      Review of primers coming soon. Also i don’t have experience shooting slog so i decided to go w cinetone and let camera handle it. To be honest I dont think jt would have helped that much Bcz i was trying to get both exposures to sit at around the same place (maybe at the expense of Varicam which was also rated at 400ISO losing some detail in the shadows)

    I see more color depth and contrast in the Panasonic honestly.
    Sony FX line is good too but I think they just have better marketing strategy than Panasonic when it comes to "cinema cameras" but in my opinion if I am to pick between the 2, I would go with the Panasonic Varicam or even the EVA 1, plus you can get the LT used at way less money than the FX6 as we speak and get bigger bang for your buck.

  • @jonathanmasters2178
    @jonathanmasters2178 Год назад +2

    The fx6 is a 4k sensor, no downscaling. It just has a lot of internal noise reduction going on which is why the signal is clean and then cuts off at the noise floor.

    • @AlexDerrick_DP
      @AlexDerrick_DP  Год назад

      Hmm.. interesting. I feel like the guys at Sony mentioned it was down sampling. But maybe that was fx9 …

    • @jonathanmasters2178
      @jonathanmasters2178 Год назад

      @@AlexDerrick_DP yes that would be fx9. Also why shoot a cine tone for the Sony and not slog 3 when shooting v log on the Varicam? You could use a color space transform in resolve to make the s log 3 into v log and then apply the Varicam lut on both images. This would be much quicker to match the two cameras

    Love your videos and they helped me in deciding that I wanted the Varicam Lt so thank you! Could you help me with something, I can't find anything online to help but I got the Panasonic Au-Xpd3 Card reader but it won't connect to my Mac? not sure why or how to go about getting the footage on my computer?

    • @wertup123
      @wertup123 6 месяцев назад

      You may want to grab a cheap PC as if your Mac is anything current from the last 5 years the drivers won't work for it

    • @AlexDerrick_DP

      You need to power the reader AND plug it into the computer. It needs two separate usb cords. Do u have that? And your computer doesn’t really matter once you get the files on your computer

    i wanted that Varicam Lt so bad and still do but i'm going to settle for a second gen s1h i think. you should do a video showing the bare minimums of what could be used to shoot on the LT because one of the main reasons i didn't get it is because of the media and all the extras i thought i would needed to operate the camera even after its discounted price.

    • @AlexDerrick_DP
      @AlexDerrick_DP  Год назад +4

      The camera body is pretty inexpensive now. I bought it when it was around $20.000. But all of the trimming are still at the same price and expensive. The PL mount is $1200 and the viewfinder is $6000 for example. I tested the S1H when it first came out. It’s a nice camera, all of the newer cameras still don’t compare to Alexa or Varicam. Only Sony Venice.
      I could make a video like that….

      Fyi. I forgot mention that media is expensive too 😫 i think 512GB is around $1000, and then you need the Panasonic Reader. Have to check on those prices. When i got the camera i got a deal Bcz Panasonic was offering several packages.

      One more thing to keep in mind. All grip for a large camera like Varicam adds up. You need heavy duty tripod, fluid head, maybe EasyRig or ronin 2 / movi / steadicam / dolly etc for camera moves. Lots of “hidden fees” when using large camera.

    Do you know if the ninja v accepts the 12 bit raw from the LT? It looks like atomos' sdi adapter is dual input or dual output

    • @AlexDerrick_DP
      @AlexDerrick_DP  Год назад

      I heard from a friend it does, but you might need to verify with Atomos how to get that to work because I was never able to get the Shogun to record 12bit. Only 10bit.

      @@AlexDerrick_DP I see. Do you think it is ever beneficial to crush the shadows?

    • @AlexDerrick_DP

      Yes. It can give image more pop! Also i maybe you did not notice and i forgot to mention that Varicam was rated at 400ISO. So little less information in shadows. But this was create less noise Bcz fx6 has internal noise processing. So two things are going on there. But how you design contrast curve is your choice

Great camera for run and gun and you need autofocus. And Sony color is much improved. With a few tweaks could get it close to Panasonic.
