    As a kid with ADHD, I remember getting bored a lot. However, when I got bored, I would craft my own stories and entertain myself.
    I was in swimming, and I mostly was a distance swimmer. I improved my technique to be as effortless as possible so I could actually work on my stories while doing my laps. I honestly would work and rework scenes in my head while doing these, and no one could tell my attention was split.
    Additionally, when I started taking notes or doodling in high school as opposed to just sitting there, both my drawing and handwriting improved enormously. All to combat the boredom I felt in my day-to-day life. And it's not like I needed a lot to keep me entertained. I remember one time at 14, just sitting on a stump and watching nature for hours, or lying on the grass and watching the clouds.
    Despite my ADHD and not having a lot of free floating dopamine, boredom was never really my enemy. Being bored helped me improve my skills and my stories. It made my inner world richer.
    So the idea of something killing boredom just rubs me the wrong way, because boredom isn't something that should or can be killed. How are these people going to function if something should happen and they lose their connection to TikTok, or whatever form of quick and easy entertainment they have? There is nothing wrong with boredom, just like there's nothing wrong with sadness or fear. It's when things go too far that things become bad, and our minds have a very normal way to seek out a way to lower boredom.
    Also, because my ADHD and family history, thank you for the heads up about how addictive TikTok can be. I have an account, but I'm almost never on it, and the few accounts I follow tend to post longer form videos. I admittedly will scroll through RUclips shorts every now and again, which I'm sure is about as bad, but I try to limit it.

    I think tiktok is problematic in many ways especially art. So many people feel the need to attack and degrade other artists with unique art styles, but these same people have the most generic, ai looking art I have ever seen. It's what has kept me from posting my own art online because the community over there has become so toxic and I worry it will eventually spread to other social media platforms

    Art tok is actually the worst thing I've ever stepped into there's always drama left and right for the most stupid thing,most always make a vid asking the viewers stupid questions like"what's the worst artstyle" and to make things even worse they always have an obsession with pinning false accusations to artist for problematic when they're not,i had to delete tiktok because of them,i can't believe i'm saying this but they're even worse than art twitter😭

    Another thing I've noticed about the need for instant gratification on the consumer side is that it also creates a need for instant gratification on the creator side. People who don't immediately get likes and shares end up feeling disheartened about the creative process, and it makes me sad to think how many wonderful artists end up abandoning art because they thought nobody liked their craft.

  • @LadySkyLaaa
    @LadySkyLaaa 20 часов назад +32

    I'd genuinely argue that the future of art is very much intertwined with the future of humanity/society as a whole. Art, for many people, is a genuinely important form of release and expression. When that freedom of expression is threatened in any regard, it can have some seriously negative ramifications on society as a whole.
    I hope any future artists or new artists growing up in this ever-changing and fast-paced TikTok era don't become discouraged from pursuing art or any kind of art form that falls under the umbrella. It is so important to become aware of how much time is spent scrolling versus spending that time on other creative endeavors.

    Tbh its not only a phenomena on tiktok. I've watched my attention span shortening a lot after starting to watch RUclips shorts. I'm gonna try to watch them less in the future and work on myself because if my brain can change from consuming too much short content, it can change by stopping myself from consuming it too much.

      One of my thoughts is that autoplay is a bad thing, in that it prevents a more thoughtful engagement, not as defined by the algorithm, but personal thinking on the subject matter, at least when it comes to such rapid fire content such as on TikTok or YT shorts. I don't think very short form content is bad, you just have to spend a bit of time thinking and reflecting on it, rather than just having a response that's akin to like/dislike

    Scrolling on some kind of short form platform (tiktok, shorts, reels, ect), though it gives you dopamine quickly, is unfulfilling.
    I'm not going to act like this person who's never fallen to scrolling on my phone for a long time, believe me, I have, and I hate it. Personally I always feel more fulfilled when I finish a drawing and share it with my friends than when scrolling through social media a lot. The social media dopamine rush is nice I agree, but it doesn't last very long. Even though I sometimes struggle to find the motivation to draw, finishing an artwork feels so much better.
    As for the boredom segment of the video, Tiktok didn't cure boredom. In fact, it might've made it worse since a lot of people now find activities that take longer and more effort boring, making things they used to enjoy feel like a chore

      @_nd_go sharing with friends especially! In fact, the reason I even have a youtube and pinterest is because I love sharing my art online, especially seeing the progress I've been making and interacting with other artists or fans!! It makes me happy to feel appreciated and like I have some kind of value and to feel loved especially since I have been in a darker place lately. Even though I do consider my art pretty mediocre in comparison to others, it's super fulfilling to orient my hyperfixations towards art or just draw an oc for fun and share it with my friends and that's what drove me to make drawing such an important aspect of who I am.

    Tiktok has its ups and downs, I find myself in the light where I get inspired by the art that people make on there. Heck even a silly AI filter where it makes you look like a character from Arcane sparked an idea in my head. I created an art piece of myself in Arcane style, posted the template but instead of the AI showing the picture it was my art that I drew instead and then the speedpaint played after to show how the piece was made. In that regard I was happy I was able to catch the trend there and make something else out of it

    I'm really glad more people are talking about this. I will say though I'll be harsh and say no amount of Tik Tok is good for you. That's like saying there are some people who smoke responsibly by smoking in moderation while still eating healthy and exercising, so it's ok to be a smoker if it works for you. No, no amount of cigarettes is fine, in the same way not Tik Tok style social media is fine in moderation. We're going to look back this in horror in the same way we look back at horror at people thought smoking was no big deal and it was normalized because everyone was doing it.

    • @Eliot_Draws
      @Eliot_Draws 8 часов назад

      While I wouldn't say that Tik Tok is good for you, I would like to say there is such a thing as drinking in moderation or eating sweets in moderation. Neither of these things are good for you, but at the heart of any addiction is that we use it as a coping mechanism as another youtuber the book leo said in a similar video about this topic is that we use social media as a coping mechanism and once we realize this we can stop using tic tok as an addict. This also plays into a sisphys55 video about the myth of sisyphs where he asks have we learned helplessness or have we just forgotten our own autonomy. Are we addicted to social media or have we told ourselves that we are to far gone to learn patience or exhibit self control?

    • @EmoKitsuneDesigns
      @EmoKitsuneDesigns Час назад

      @@Eliot_Draws You raise some valid points, but to counter your examples. With both drinking and sweets those are government regulated with warnings so that people are warned about the dangers and risks it poses. I was recently diagnosed with being pre-diabetic and THANK GOD the government passed regulation only a few years ago mandating all companies be transparent with the added sugars on the nutrition labels. Because I thought I was eating healthy and in moderation all this time, but that was a lie hidden by food companies. And things like drinking is age restricted as alcohol permanently damages younger brains and children physiologically are more vulnerable to being addicted and are unable to make informed decisions like an mature adult brain. You can fact check me on that, people under 18 do not have the brain maturity to exercise self-control. Now if people are given all the information about the dangers of social media, then of course they are free to consume and do whatever they want, and your point would be valid. BUT all of the points Celestia and many others have been raising are not known to most users. Regulation has been very slow to come as well as scientific peer-reviewed studies as evidence.
      Especially children; if you read first hand account from teachers online they are saying the ipad kid generation are way worst in attention and learning than any other generation they have taught. You need to understand companies take advantage of people's addiction for profit and do their best to hide the negative effects including trying to put out their own funded studies telling the public it's not so bad (Like with cigarettes and asbestos). It's not learned helplessness imo, it's sinister capitalism driven manipulation.

    Tantacrul made a video going over the history of Facebook. And one line he said that I can’t stop thinking about was “Is social media a net positive for humanity?”
    And the more I think about it… I don’t think it is. All of the big ones (Twitter/Facebook/TikTok) have strayed so far from what they set out to be that we would all be better off if they didn’t exist anymore.
    As a comp sci major, I feel isolated when I see how exited my peers and professors are about new technology, because I’m just reminded of the harm that it’s causing.

    Hugely appreciate the sources and the fact that you mention other contributing factors here.
    Will say I think some of the sources might be dubious here; the first one has links to various other "sources" that don't make sense, like the sentence "TikTok’s never-ending stream of 24-31-second videos reduces users’ attention spans compared to other social media networks. Also, teens spend almost eight hours daily on TikTok, more than on different media." linking to a guide on optimizing your TikTok content by an "AI video editor" app that does not mention this timeframe at all.

    i don't know if i have a different perception of boredom, but a lot of the tasks you described as being boring seem more like those kind of "doing nothing" tasks to me, which i actually think are quite rewarding, because it keeps my brain active, even if i'm not actually doing much physically. personally, i see boredom as more like "i want to do something that i'm not currently doing because what i'm doing now feels pointless, but i can't do something different/i don't know what else to do" and ironically i think the way algorithms are changing are making me feel *more* bored, to the point where i struggle to be creative just because i'm *too* bored to want to do anything, like my brain is too focused on the fact that i feel bored that i can't come up with ideas on how to stop myself from feeling bored, if that makes sense. i cant say anything about tiktok specifically because it's not something i use, but it feels like this issue is at least in part caused by how the algorithms are constantly fighting to get and keep your attention on their app/site, even through directly wasting your time (like showing you stuff you aren't interested in or have already seen), which ends up making using them feel pointless and boring, and i think that ends up making it harder to create

I have the best time doing boring things at boring times, being stuck at home and having all this entertainment and time available has been slowly harming both my art and mental health I have nowhere to find boredom because I'm constantly here, where entertainment exist, I miss being able to be at school and die of boredom and mild stress and I miss all the job training day things we did it was so boring and I had such good ideas, now I just have jumbled ideas and no substance or direction because I don't have the time to think and I can't mentally separate myself from home mode.. Luckily my grandma sometimes picks me up and go to her house to do other stuff but it's not really as good as getting properly and utterly bored doing something that I don't care about

    haaa honestly quite a few symptoms from this are kind of similar to my experiences with adhd. a lot of the worst symptoms of adhd are caused from a baseline dopamine deficiency (adhd is alot more then that your brain structure is significantly different in general but the low dopamine creates the most issues) resulting in you having to seek it out externally for quick hits to just feel normal or motivated to do thing's.

    As someone with, kinda a cocktail of mental health problems. I don't really like getting bored, because that tends to lead to intrusive/just bad thoughts. So I pretty much always have RUclips on, while I do something else (heck, while watching most of this video, I was playing Pokémon Picross, on my 3DS
    But, I do have moments during my weeks/days. Where I'm either not listening to anything, or just watching RUclips, and letting my mind wander
    But also, I guess I have the opposite problem? Like, instead of constantly looking for short form content. I'm constantly looking for long form content
    I fall asleep to DYKG clip videos (on 1% volume). And I'll gladly listen to a multi hour video, about a show I watched as a tween
    But, that's simply because I like having background noise, while I do other stuff. Like reading or drawing. And I'm not blasting it, so my focus isn't 100% on the video. Instead, it's mostly on the other thing I'm doing

My preferred length is like an hour but the shortest I am ok with is like 20 minutes. For reference I am only 26 but maybe that’s old now, I also have adhd and autism and I think that’s why I can’t watch short videos since I hyper focus on one thing at a time and to many different videos at once I get anxiety. In a way I have the opposite of this haha. As an artist I learn the best by watching how each artist draws and you can’t learn how they do in less than a minute, because of this and ai I am glad I stayed away from social media.
