My art teacher once taught me "Don't draw something with intention to gain followers. It will end up being disliked by everyone and turn out meaningless. Draw something that you know you'd love. Even if the whole world dislike it, at least there's one person who loves it, that's an artwork that have meaning."
I learned this lesson today. Thinking back to my most "popular" pieces, they were pieces that I enjoyed making, and enjoy looking at. I think people can see when we try too hard. Last night I made a silly goofy sticker that brought me joy, and out of the tens of other stickers I made that were made to sell, this one is my most popular one. The most popular pieces of mine are ones when I made something introspective and personal. I think people can just tell, even if they don't have an "eye" for art.

Celestial, I think that you should probably take in consideration more the group of muscles. It helped me a lot, personally...You worked on realism for a while, right ? I know you said that you don't know how to translate it into your art . I really recommend you SamuDekure art he's an amazing artist and teacher.
It’s real sad that artists feel like they have to be in drama or do drama videos to be noticed. They don’t need it in my opinion but it’s sad that they feel like they do.

We as a society shouldn't have to rely on stupidity or controversy to garner attention from the masses! The fact that the internet is rewarding controversy and stupidity really says a lot about society as a whole!

Nah bro, it’s how humans are, if it bleeds it leads style of network works for a reason, and that reason being you are more likely to remember touching an electric fence than finding a nice big juicy apple, it’s survival instinct to pay attention to the bad stuff and barely remember the good.
It isn't just about starting drama, but it feels like there's a noteworthy amount of artists on social media nowadays that feel as though they have to jump on every piece of controversy that occurs in the art community. It's easy to gain a following by saying something that everyone agrees with. So whenever there's drama pertaining to a certain artist, ofc you're gonna have a bunch of people bring awareness to it and garnering support or disdain for their actions. But at that point--like you said--the people that follow will only be interested in your role in the controversy, rather than the actual art you make.
I jumped from 200 to almost a thousand followers on Twitter by simply saying that Artists have no rights over the character they drawn when it's a commission, and a lot of artists got mad at me for saying so. A lot of people realized I was right like 4 days later, when an artist legitimately saw my post, saw people against me, and SOLD SOMEONE ELSE'S OC because they made the art. I jumped off ship and refuse to use X/Twitter, because I learnt those people are not people, they are sick piranas that want to take down and steal from as many people as they can.
What sucks is that nowadays this negativity is what drives social media. Less good connections, no more good conversations, just vitriol. It's only going to get worse from here and its unfortunate.
There's an overall negativity problem in comment sections. If you post something inoffensive and pleasant, the audience will just consume and then move on. With algorithms thriving on controversy/rage bait to generate engagement, it's no wonder people end up creating for those existing systems.
I started my channel to help artist's online, I first thought I had enough stuff to help beginner and mid-tier artists like myself. Eventually, it turned into a art news/art awareness/ai update for artists channel. I hoped to use the channel to propel my art but very rarely do people ever comment on my art, seem interested or ask about what I am drawing. Videos I was more passionate about get overlooked for my news channel type stuff and the silly stuff I find online. I'm not sure anyone is interested in my future personal projects, but I feel like most people like my personality enough that I'm happy people come for me, but I wish they came for my art too.
One of the things that annoy me most about twitter is people's constant need to either stir up or insert themselves in pointless drama. Yeah, you might get a couple viral tweets on your hot takes, but it does nothing meaningful for you or your art. It's superficial engagement. And depending on the nature of the drama you could be locking yourself out of potential work opportunities and not even know it. My advice is to avoid it as much as possible.
THIS! Twitter is probably the absolute worst and had to leave for the sake of my own mental health. They even go as far as to twist the context of things when it comes to stirring up drama as if it was a sport, watched it happen to a lot of people who didn't deserve it. A creator I work with art wise who relies on what he does online for income was put at risk by a Twitter user who spent time getting close to him just to dig up anything they could find to take out of context to try de-platforming him for attention. Thankfully it was obvious enough that despite how much attention they garnered trying to escalate it the majority was able to tell it was bullshit. Similar happened to a closer friend but wasn't as lucky. I know first hand from experience as well but it was more of a harassment campaign over one of my comments about a fucking logo, which actually managed to be a bit traumatic. I tend to accidentally word things properly or I'm easily taken out of context, but even then when I'm clear about something and it was just a positive comment they still found a way to take it negatively/twisting the context so they had a reason to justify harassment (which one user openly claimed it should be allowed). All I wanted to do was point out how one logos format consistently looked cool even in different languages, I had different examples and they picked one to use as the sole excuse to harass me and even dm death threats while others were even using it as an excuse to be racist. I had to delete the post before it got any worse when they started making and spreading around edited screenshots/memes without the other context. All that over a fucking logo design. I swear they feed off of this shit
This is actually something I could not put into words about this topic and it is a matter of morality for me on my end of some artist that do that, mostly the voice acting community via ruining the characters they play. So, thank you for putting it into a logical matter.
From personal observation, this is not limited to art, there are far too many youtuber whose existence and following are solely due to bitching about something. I saw one build his channel on the crazyness of radical vegans, there are a dozen of dipshit who do not know what destroy means, ect. Reacts, debunkings and other such interraction are also popular. These feed the myth that such negativity is needed, which is further reinforced by the fact that receiving meaness is part of how you know you succeeded. My own interpretation is that interraction is the real motor, but negativity has created a lense. Further more there is a dramaless way of getting interaction, it is the collabs. It worked in the golden age of internet, namely with tgwtg, it still worked after whenever someone does it, but it has gotten rarer and negative interaction are ever so present. Side note, you totally should do a collab with other art channels (or canadians youtuber, it would be hillarious to get a youtuber from every province andtry to get everyone to agree on something), have a discussion or challange, or both, show that art can prosper with positivity and get that deserved 200k views.
Even roblox game communities get it bad if it's popular enough, there's one who does content for one of these game and majority of the time it's just him instigating and sticking his nose into other creators business who are usually completely harmless just so he can drum up or find a reason to drum up drama. He recently tried interrogating a kid about their disability despite it having nothing to do with the game itself. it's insane

This is what I’ve been shaking my head at for a while now! We need people to cover this topic and talk about this. Ever noticed how there’s a pattern with some of these artists? First the start drama and make a controversial post. They mid-way, the make a new tweet under their post and go “Oh wow, this has gone viral! Follow my art btw :3” Like, the art plugs they make are so shameless.
I started getting serious about art at the end of the 2024 and kept practicing while I was work and at home when I get the chance. After deciding to make art to show others, I have gotten pretty self conscious about posting. After posting about 3 of my art (with some wip to show the progress), the only ones that notice or even liked it were family or 1 random person. It hurts to see that wanting others to like my art is by either taking drastic measures or just keep posting. I'm incline to post more and work on my art! I might want to do an art trade to work on things! It's a long journey though~ Video was great as well since it hit the nail on my current predicament.

It doesn't matter how tempting it is to start drama or get involved in it. I'm a super small art channel that will grow without needing all that. Being in a world where controversy and negativity is what gains you popularity feels very dystopian. You shouldn't have to rely on drama for getting eyes on you and I feel we should stop rewarding behavior that's willing to be hateful or even criminal with attention and popularity. Traction should imo be gained through hard work, being supportive, and just overall being a good person
Back when I used social media I just blocked people that kept showing up for controversy. Someone who isnt even a fan tries to use a controversy to siphon likes from a fandom? Blocked.
I never liked the idea about how stirring up drama or getting involved in drama is the only way to get attention on social media. I mean, what happens if said drama is something so horrible, that said artist can never get out of it and that drama ruins their entire career?
So, I do official art for a very large and popular series on Tiktok, and on occasion I would get accused of stealing from the creator I work for, and I would approve the comment so I could make a video from it, addressing that accusation. A lot of times the comments were so nasty that even approving them to answer, tiktok would remove the comment because it was so mean and nasty. I did get to respond to a few though. My responding to the comments, not even so much a call out, just letting them know that I work for that creator, would result in a huge spike in my following. Not the way I wanted to gain followers at all. It's sad that causing controversy does get results. I had steady growth, but those spikes in followers and attention came from drama. So I can see where starting artists can draw that conclusion. They see the spike but not the hard work and steady growth before that, or that you still have to continue the hard work after the drama, to keep that following or build more. People sadly respond to drama, otherwise Jerry Springer wouldn't have been a popular show. We either respond to drama and fighting, or something heartwarming and positive. But it has to be over the top either way.

As long as someone is sincere about their interaction hiatus or can recognize when they should let their audience know that they can't let their audience know all of everything, the issue shouldn't be /too/ awful. I have some very talented online art moot who post great pieces very often, but he asks "Why do people drop so many likes and interactions to my political tweets, but they don't care about my art?" Usualy he manage to get viral just with political thing He often rely on controversy on very sensitive topics to get lot of interaction, even followers, his arts are great too, but those arts lacks that level of controversy and the same people who celebrates his text-only posts, are not as interested on his arts
Art drama is the absolute bane of the art world online. I never click on it, I hate it, and 99% of the time it's a non-story, with commentators just dragging non-events out to make money for themselves.

I don't want to be in drama
The vast majority of the art community loves the idea of art more than drawing art.
If anyone has any tips to get more engagement, i'd consider it with the exception of not talking about drama content 😅
I feel like if they NEED to have drama and controversy to be seen (not just in the art community, but in any field), then i feel that it's over for them unless they like drama idk

Unrelated to the topic of the video, but do you know what the kind of gloves your character is wearing are called?
I once tried looking up the description of a fictional character who has those, where they were described as ‘fingerless gloves’. Sadly, looking up ‘fingerless gloves’ gave me anything but the kind of gloves I was looking for.
i wouldn't say artists *need* drama, my tweets were doing just fine before. however, after i made some trans rights supportive drawings to troll phobics, it started a drama and my art popped off a lil bit :O

I have some very talented online art moot who post great pieces very often, but he asks
"Why do people drop so many likes and interactions to my political tweets, but they don't care about my art?"
Usualy he manage to get viral just with political thing
He often rely on controversy on very sensitive topics to get lot of interaction, even followers, his arts are great too, but those arts lacks that level of controversy and the same people who celebrates his text-only posts, are not as interested on his arts
Art drama is the absolute bane of the art world online. I never click on it, I hate it, and 99% of the time it's a non-story, with commentators just dragging non-events out to make money for themselves.

True, though Only problem with that is then your sfw art will get little attention and youll need to keep making nsfw to keep your followers.
artists who draw more than they talk are the true ideal patrician gigachads. drama is the natural order of a yap artist.
Also if you consume drama, that's what the algo will feed you.
The reality is we don't want to put the hard work to improve or provide value, so we turn to drama/metacommentary and become crabs in a bucket
