IDK if there’s an official name but I love when characters have reactive hair. It droops over when they’re sad, points upward when shocked, and spikes out when they get punched in the face
Imagine a character who has like.. a different outfit everyday, but has a specific outfit they wore the first episode, and at the last episode or finale, they wear that outfit
The "My wardrobe consists of copies of the same outfit" also provides a really funny in-story reason for slight discrepancies in the outfit between episodes because "that one got washed with the blues."
Actually it can also be indicative of the character sometimes. Like the main character of my story genuinely has the same shirts and pants multiple times because he takes too long to decide on things and this just makes it easy. Decisions are hard
In my case the story is taking place in a fantasy world where the clothes adapts to the character's needs and personality, so they usually wear the same outfit except under certain circumstances like a serious fight
on the topic of repeat outfits, i think its funniest in hxh, because killua regularly changes outfits, so its established in that universe that characters aren't wearing the same outfit all the time, but gon does anyway. Every time i see killua in a new fit and gon still wearing that same green cropped jacket, i can only imagine he smells terrible.
I'm wondering if that mom side ponytail was a popular hairstyle 20+ years ago, so all the manga artists remember their mom having that hairstyle and put it on the mom character out of instinct because they associate it with momness.
The side braid doomed anime mom is so accurate and I don’t know why and spike hair makes no sense but is fun to draw… tbh most of these are just fun to draw… one of my OCs has the ridiculous amount of pockets and I both love and hate drawing that
I really do love the scar trope as well. Not everyone has to have 100% perfect skin all the time, and it really adds depth to the characters that have them (Zuko from ATLA is my personal favorite example).
Same! Zuko is my fav too because the scar looks cool on his character design and it's also very relevant to his actual character and isn't JUST for the design
I’ve always wanted a trench coat or at least a long coat so I can walk into the autumn wind and have it flow behind me while I pretend I’m in a detective novel or something, but no coat I’ve gotten flows the exact way I want it. Realistic? Yes, but still devastating to my inner self, also yes
Fair warning, a trench coat does not do that. They're designed to keep you warm in trenches, which does not lend itself to dramatically flapping in the breeze. You will look absolutely stylish, though.
Some coats do flow in the wind but you need them to be of lighter material and keep them open and maybe walk in wind speeds above 15kmh, however the downside is that you will feel cold
ma'am, i can't judge you, i was probably on the same brainwaves but with none of the budget or the balls to pull such looks off XD also i dont know if this trope has a name or not, but i'll call it "the emote accessory", a character has some accessory or wears a graphic of a face that emotes in sync with them, like example - character wears a smiley face pin on their lapel, and when something surprises them, the pin acts surprised too, if something saddens them, the pin also looks sad, or if something scares them, the pin is also frightened. bonus if the emote accessory emotes harder than the character
As a YuGiOh fan, I find it funny how you went for Yusei's somewhat tame hairstyle, especially when compared to Yuma (from ZeXal) and Yusaku (from VRAINS). Not like it diminishes your point, and honestly, I'm in the same camp.
With the scar stuff I have two characters like that! Originally it would’ve fully blinded character A but Character B used a spell (that’s gonna come back later) to take half the injury onto their own body. So both of them are blind in one eye now and it adds a layer of dependency between them. I love doing that for my precious little ocs!!!
The 'character always wearing the same outfit' and the 'really long trenchcoat' both reminded me of the Doctor from Doctor Who. A few of his companions have noted on the fact that he's always wearing the same outfit, or that he doesn't change to match the time period even when he makes his companions change. Also the 10th doctor's trenchcoat could be for practical reasons but also has no buttons and does indeed look dramatic when he's running. Which also brings into play the 'unreasonable amount of things in pocket/pouches' because his pockets are bigger on the inside and he puts heaps of stuff in them sometimes
One of my fave tropes in anime is when the story is set in japan, and there's one character who's either completely not japanese or only partially japanese, and they're the only blonde, my favourite example of this is probably in Love Live, Eli is 1/4 russian and the only blonde in µ's, then mari is italian american and japanese, and the only blonde in aqours, then in nijigaku ai is gyaru so it can be assumed she dyes her hair, mia is american, and the only natural blonde in the group, it took until the fourth series in the franchise to have a natural blonde who is entirely japanese, with sumire 😭😭
Fma doesnt have an overwhelming cast of japanese characters. Most are european and there are several blond characters, none of which are japanese I do have an example though, tamaki from ouran high school host club and muu from milgram, both half french iirc. Ouran does have another blond character, still the fact that they made the japanese one brown eyed and the half french kid blue eyed is very telling. My hero academia also has pony who isnt the only blond student, however with the other two its clearly falling into tropes too (denki = electricity is yellow, bakugo = blond delinquent) and pony as well as stars and stripes and all might all seem to fall under "americans are blond". Ik all might isnt american but his theme and inspirations are american heroes, so its kinda funny how hes also blond
@@ghostthelizard to add onto that, aoyama & his family are blonde & they're apparently french LOL- & monoma is blonde too, but he fits with katsuki in the stereotypical blonde bully/delinquent category. mirio is also blonde, altho i'm guessing that has something to do with the fact that he's compared to the sun. or maybe horikoshi really *did* base him off of that tintin(?) character 💀💀💀
The side ponytail hairstyle is a japanese omen for tragedy and death! For some reson whanever I thaught about roasting Celestia my autistic brain startid thinking of the Generel Motors Canada TDH5303 New look Tansit bus , Which I have 1 of in my utility belt that I dont were as I have a freekin' Bus So!
i agree with most of those except 2, pockets and scar/birthmark i also like it when characters have a mask covering their face for a quick hunting session, looks cool.
12:43 I did this with my MC (At least with one of the potential outfits I designed for her)! I really love it too. It's such a great character design element!
this video brings me unimaginable joy and when i heard that more are coming soon i immediately yelled out YIPPEE because my autistic ass can’t get enough of character design (bsd characters in the thumbnail help tremendously as well lmao)
I loved this video and admittedly like these tropes and never noticed a few (the side ponytail specifically I never noticed until now), but except for one that I don’t like cause I simply don’t get it, the over accessories trope. I don’t get why all of the belts, zippers, or anything a character has that’s just in random places for no reason. For some characters, I think “like a country guy with a big truck, you’re compensating for something, aren’t you?”
11:05 IMO, it applies to difformities in general, one of the best examples I can think of is Cyrano de Bergerac's nose in the theater piece of the same name: If you acknowledge it, Cyrano gets mad because you're making fun of his nose. If you don't acknowledge it, Cyrano gets mad because you're making a conscious effort to avoid his nose presumably because you find it repulsive. If you call his nose small, Cyrano gets mad because you're making a mockery of the nose he's so proud of. If you call his nose big, make sure you're doing skillfullly. Otherwise, Cyrano will spend a solid 2 minutes calling his nose huge in various extravagant ways just to show you how much of an idiot you are. There is no winning.
I love the list of things X character has in their pocket and it goes from snacks to living beings to nuclear weapons. Actions and clothes that makes you feel badass>> Long coat, superman pose, model walking on the street, high collars...
I am Obsessed with Orga Itsuka's hair in Iron Blooded Orphans. The giant swoop would not be achievable on a day to day basis in real life, especially for a teenage paramilitary soldier who is so extremely mistreated by his superiors, but it's so fucking fun
6:40 Robin / Dick Grayson. While in the original Teen Titans, it's not really addressed... (can't belive I'll be saying it, but credit to where credit is due) TTG makes a gag about it when Starfire destroys all of Robin's hair gel and his hair flattens for the rest of the episode. From time to time, a bottle would roll on screen with Robin looking happy at the bottle before Starfire blasts it two secons after

The saddest thing is that Kagome actually did have a lot of outfit changes in the early chapters and episodes. Her casual fashion is one of my fave among female leads. The strict uniform code came later in the series, and it sucks because it was probably required by the editors or publishers so her design is easily recognizable and marketable.
Personally I think Vash’s under suit design makes sense because it’s basically just bullet proof armor but for his entire body which fits with his character and him constantly taking bullets in the anime. However, a more apt example is his godforsaken red trench coat that I imagine he has to rip apart every time he needs to get that abomination off.😭
As someone who is interested in science, I kind of hate the scientist that always wears a lab coat outside their lab, because part of the reason why lab coats are important is that you don't wear them outside the lab!
