Hi Marco, I have question I follow you since the beginning, I planned to buy same airbrush as you but still I want to know if it's a good idea, I use an ultra from H&S since 10 years and I want to be more precise. IS the Iwata a real game hanger?
Probably the best video on Grimdark painting I've ever seen. Super informative and inspiring, and a very original and impressive approach. Can't wait to try it myself!
Marco's painting style in a nutshell. Colorful base layer, crazy colors. Oil colors First create total chaos Murmuring some words Puff MAGIC Highlights And an awesome model is finished. I love it Thanks Marco
Phenomenal result. Given three hours, I might be able to build most of this model. But to paint it to THIS quality in that time is nothing short of sorcery.
Totally love Marco's style and attitude. I laughed to myself because I was thinking that in 3 hours probably I won't be able to finish the assembly of the model and in the meanwhile a period between 1 week and 1 month could pass just to prime it. For completing the model another month, and here we have my speed paint done easily in just 3 months, Without Marco suggestions it might have taken 1 year, a great success tbh!
Im loving your speed painting vids more than any other painting tutorials on YT. Selfishly, I just want to see more of these steps applied to different models rather than changing the process to all oils. No matter what you do, I’ll be watching everything you produce.
Dude I find your technique amazing. I have no idea of how you come up with your colours and approach but always turns out amazing. So good. Thanks Marco
It's all about workflow... If you have a good idea of what you're looking for, and a well-developed sense of how to get there, you can get a hell of a lot out of just a few hours of work.
Watercolours and gouache are amazing for weathering and I've been using them a lot for that lately, but they can also be used really well for regular painting, especially overpainting over a chromatic/value sketch, even if you're going for a smooth/clean look.
I'm af fairly accomplished painter having painted thousands of miniatures for myself and thousands as commission work through the years. I tried copying some techniques from Marco and especially when trying to imitate his airbrush work, you are reminded just how small the miniatures and details are. I will keep improving and I will have to invest in an even better airbrush in the future.
That orange-brown ink to desaturate and apply sepia :chefkiss: I painted a feculent gnarlmaw for my brother, using Gal-something Red(?, it was a dark-wine-burgundy color). I really liked the color, and didn’t want to go lighter. So I pulled Athelorn Camoshade(?, green wash???) and applied it like a shadow knowing it would wash out the dark areas. Anything else it touched would just be made more nurgly.
I love the video and following your examples. I'm not that into grim dark, so I'll probably end around 9:50 and just add a couple of highlights while still not managing to get even close to your impossible speed painting times 😊
Hey Marco, Love the mood on this mini. Trying out this method for some time and have a question. If you apply a universal environmental shadow at the beginning why do you decide to do different colours of washes? Is the wash colour choice connected with the shadow tone from the beginning at all? I am struggling with this step as I am never sure if I should be planning wash colour to enhance the shadow or rather focus on how it will affect tones. I rarely reach the mood and tones I have in the head. Either shadow is off or tones are.
It’s always cool to watch you paint but I have to say that I am not sure I understand what you say and the concept/theory It would be be god to see a comparison with and without the undertones to really see/understand the impact of it on the final’ product ! But god work as always ! Inspirational
Violett Dunkel (Dark Violet) is the first Molotow paint I bought after Signal Black. Turns out, it's not dark, but more of a midtone. I love Molotow paints but there naming schemes and swatches on the website are not the most accurate. Since Signal Black is so powerful, adding 1 drop black to 9 drops Violet Dark gives you an actual dark violet, but desaruates a decent amount as well.
THREE HOURS ✨ he's a master. This looked super fun and im excited to try it out. I was curious since you do plenty of 3d printing you must have a UV curing chamber-thingy. Why not cure the base in there and not bother with the tiny torches 😅
I usually do, but the little torches where easier to film and give the idea that in case you want to do the same you don't necessarily need a curing chamber!
I have been looking for a grimdark scheme but with white armour in place of the steel - would this broad process work, or is there something I'm missing?
Amazing as per usual! How long are you waiting before removing the oil wash? Mine tends to get quite dusty/ dirty after the removal step so wondering if I'm waiting too long. Love this series so thank you 🙏
Always love watching you work Marco - quick question (for you or any others here)... I've been working with oils a lot more recently and love it, although I am always apprehensive when transitioning from oils > acrylic. What guidelines do you tend to follow when switching back and forth? Do you ever apply a varnish inbetween, and how long of a wait before applying varnish if so? I often will try to switch back to acrylic without a varnish but the oily surface will fight back against me. And then other times I'll apply a varnish and then get some strange results on the surface, likely due to not waiting long enough for the oils to dry... Early on I think my oil layers were just too thick, but still encountering similar results now that I'm thinning things down a lot more. Any tips would be super appreciated! Thanks! :)
Do you ever paint metals with all one value and hue, but with different levels of shiney ness, say a gray a very close gunmetal gray followed by that varnish then the same gunmetal and then either a way or that caligraphy ink?
That's more or less what I did skipping a few steps for speed! And that's actually the proper way to handle metals because to generate deeper and more stable shadows the natural shin/glossiness has to be modelled and controlled
After seeing this I wonder if the Molotov one4all range could replace any other range such as Vallejo for painting figures. What do you think? The price per ml is cheaper at Moltow.
@@hydrascalemodels sadly no 🥲 they are extremely fluid and extremely opaque even with extra dilution; they are great for solid base coating, value blocking and freehands, but they can't cover every aspect of painting. Acrylic gouache/SoFlat can definitely be that universal tool!
@@MarcoFrisoniNJM thanks! Im currently painting 1/4 models. If you had to choose just one brand of paint for this type of projects, which one would you choose? Kimera, Liquitex Gouache or GSW maxx paints?
@@hydrascalemodels if I have to choose one, gun to the head, definitely Liquitex Acrylic Gouache/Golden SoFlat! Molotow can be a nice addition for the large coverage work on very big scales... But you can probably use spray cans for a solid general base work! I love the 1/4 scale, I did a couple of Japanese GK years ago and they are a bunch of fun. What's the subject?
Hey mate, you did a painting true metallic metals video using the new dante sculpt. I can’t find that video anywhere. I planned on using that video for painting my Custodes. Do you happen to know where I can find it if possible? It is an incredible video. Love your work!
Marco, how much time to you give a primer to cure? I primed a mini with black molotow, than white molotow. But after applying dilluted oils my sponge take away everything except black)))
Hi, are the Molotov a real primer or just a good acrylic paint? It was my understanding that a primer should have a better/special formula to bond with the plastic (or material) to create the foundation for the next layers
When you use Oil Paints they always look so smooth, when i apply them it always looks patchy! What am i doing wrong? Are there Differences with the Mineral Spirit? I'm using cheap white Spirit from the Hardware Store for thinning the Oil Paints, could this be the Error?
Just a few minutes until the white spirit is gone and the surfaces look dry/are dry to the touch! Timing is important to get an heavier or lighter bond and staining, but for these speed paints/if the wash is not also an heavy weathering pass I usually tend to go light and wait less
Your Kimera paints which you once really liked don't see much use anymore, do you find gouache to simply work better for you in every way? Also, Turner gouache review when?
@@HallBr3gg not when applied with an airbrush! Layering a couple thin layers will not wet the surface at all, plus there's no movement or pushing on the surface involved
Hi Marco, always appreciating your works. I find a problem when allplying oils like you do, they strip away paint and even the primer, I'dont apply any pressure with the brush, i use vallejo and kimera colors, citadel spray primer. Any suggestions on what i should do different?
I recently switched to Molotow paints and stopped having this issue. No dilution necessary and the paint doesn't rub off. I think some paint applications are just weaker (i.e., thin ink filters), and unless you want to introduce an extra step (varnishing), you'll have to splurge for some tougher paints.
