Great work, Chris! I’m enjoying going through week 2 of your course. And I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more. I’ve seen many instructors, and Chris takes an intuitive and autodidactic perspective which, i think is better.
and introducing the contender: weighing in with a powerful voice and some hefty grit; he is the most helpful vocal teacher on the internet...the Rated R vocal staaaaarrrrr. CHRIS. LIEPE.
I realize that I can't prove this until I get set up on YT here but I can work Myles throat voice crunching that larynx like no other, aside from maybe Mike Patton, but that's not fair its Mike Patton he's the male equivalent to Mariah Carey 😆. This is the first song that I've seen on this page where I sat back and thought to myself, that's nice but not enough throat/head and I can do it better. However it is key to note that he's performing more key to note work 🥁, as opposed to emulating Myles voice (as he mentions).
This bridge is a true gem! Hoping for Tesseract - Of Matter (at least a part of it)! It's great for breaking it down. So many things to learn. Dynamics, high notes, chest, mix, vocal runs, harmonies.
This is truly is one of the best from Alter Bridge! Myles Kennedy has such a strong voice and puts so much emotion into what he sings. Chris, you killed it with bringing the intensity of Kennedy while adding your own flavor on it. You could totally sing along side of Kennedy and it would be quite the collaboration! You are a gifted vocalist and this made me love this song even more! So sexy!
This is exactly what I'm trying to do with Blackbird!! Sing it in the style of Chris Cornell. My throat is never workout congestion, I always have to clear my throat but it helps me to grit up everything I sing. Great job, Chris! Enjoyed the performance!
Hell yeah! Love this song to death and always thought it showed some cool parts of Myles’ range. Those gritty verses that move into his upper range, and then the “could you set me free” part is such a great climax. Great singing Chris, god damn
Love it man! Those distortions are awesome. Speaking of Mark Tremonti, his voice has become an absolute powerhouse in his solo band Tremonti. Would love to see you do a breakdown of his voice!
Great job Chris! I've been following your tips for some time now here and have to say THANK YOU for showing me that there's a meaning in every part of EVERY words you're singing.
Coming from middle-east I should say I always love the similar middle-eastern-ish themes in western music and I would like to see more of that on the channel. After hearing this I think you also can cover "The Worst in Me" by Bad Omens really well.
That is great! I want to have this cover in my Spotify playlist! As a matter of fact I would like to have all your covers in the Spotify! Great performance! Also, the breakdown by you is what gives the video its special value.
Really can’t get enough of your videos! Even though my voice is so different to yours I keep learning so much from all your videos :) they really are for anyone who wants to learn more about singing. 🎤 can’t wait to see more !
At 2:20 I could have bet $100 you were going to say Chris Cornell there lol. I also thought about it while listening to the original version of this song, specially in the bridge part, you can definitely hear Cornell vibes.
What an amazing cover! The pocket thing you mentioned is so true and so underrated, when I record vocals I experiment with it a lot and usually end up liking the more "pulled" version a lot better, it's like night and day and I hear it in your cover as well.
RIGHT... night and day is a good way to describe it. Pitch, tone etc... can be good either way, but if the timing isn't right, it throws everything off!
that's looking pretty good on a baritone bro. i sometimes have probles as a beritone myself with high keys head voice. so i'm experymental on some sort of "angelycal" mix and got pretty results. then adding distortion and grit on some lines seems to work good as a contrast. keep up the good work !
the long high note at the end of the bridge leaves me in awe every time... btw I think you will love Starlight. a song myles did with slash back in 2011. check it out if you haven't yet!
i love the one take performance... Havent listened to the original in a while but I imagine to hear microadjustments when to set in and such, which I feel gives it another organic...well live feeling. Great performance, I love the more grit. Sounds beefy... Taking your course and love it :) Keep going! //e: ah you say the same while analyzing... Im surely not the only one who loves that you admit to mortal struggles like timing while performing :)
Awesome job Chris, well done. Proof that you can take a song sung by such a distintive singer such as Myles Kennedy and put your own spin on it. You mentioned Mark Tremonti at the top of the video - you should definitley look at unpacking his vocal style. Mark's vocal ability, whilst not as range-y as Myles, is superb. The Tremonti solo records are some of the best examples of rock singing I've heard in recent times in my opinion.
Never clicked so fast!! I was always hoping you'd do some Myles stuff, especially analyzing his head voice technique. Great job on this one! (also, would you at some point give us a video on the band Nothing More? We'd be forever in your debt haha)
@@chrisliepe Nah, thank YOU man, after 10+ years of anxiety and struggling I'm finally not afraid of how my voice sounds and able to actually start to learn singing at 32 old.
love the course in week 5 . got alot to learn to get to this level without blowing out my voice. this is my favorite song by them LOVE YOUR PART WITH "COULD YOU SET ME FREE". great job THIS GUY KNOWS HIS STUFF IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO SING TAKE HIS COURSE. !!! can you do a video how chad grey from mudvayne / hellyeah transitions from singing into his iconic screaming like in not falling/ death blooms / hellyeah 333 opening scream
Hi Chris! Thanks for your fresh and inspiring take on this classic. In my opinion, most of Myles his most stunning vocal work is with his previous band, the Mayfield Four. Just check out a song like Summergirl, where he has this insane 20 sec high note belt. Could you cover some of the techniques for these kind of belts? Regards!
Fairly decent job with the song. Its hard to do a Myles Kennedy song. He just sounds so incredibly great, it always sounds a tad ‘karaoke’ when someone else tries him - even when a strong vocalist tries -such as this was…
Hi Chris, your lessons have been absolutely fantastic for me regarding how things should feel, I think you absolutely deserve more viewers and subscribers than you get. Hope all is going well in lockdown! I'd love to see you do a video of this style on one of the more gritty, powerful Metallica songs, perhaps Thing That Should Not Be, or My Friend of Misery? I'm having trouble getting a consistent compression akin to Hetfield, M Shadows, Mustaine etc. Thanks for all the content!
Please. PLEASE!!! Sing more Alter Bridge, Mayfield Four, SMKC... MORE MYLES PLEASE!!! I'm in love with your Lesson about his voice. The way you explain Cornell and Kennedy is awesome. I wish hear you sing something like Slaves & Bulldozers (entirely, 'cuz i wanna hear your version of the pre-chorus) or Ties That Bind by AB. Pleaseeeeeeeee!!!!
Amazing amazing amazing content and talent. Your ability to articulate some of these complex techniques AND demonstrate is just awesome. Not sure if it's in your wheelhouse, but a cover of Tesseract, maybe "Hexes" or "Tourniquet" would be really cool to see! Dan Tompkins uses and talks about clean tones/grit/distortion a lot too.
Great job man hell of a job. Sir can you try to cover “burn in my light” by mercy drive & “just close your eyes” by story of the year. You would do an amazing job
Awesome, Chris! I love Alter Bridge, since the beginning after Creed formation, and this is one of my favorite tracks from that album. I would love to see one of your covers or "sing like" Sully Erna from Godsmack. Also, the vocal course is amazing, great job!
I can use compression, mixed voice etc. But I have a very twangy voice in my passagio... Thats why I can sing only aggressive songs like this... Not softer and melodious ones...
Chris, You should explore some Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) stuff here. they're a bit before your time but Zander's style is so dynsmic a lot of sweet and clean mixed with heavy compression... Huge range too
An amazing video, this cover is an absolute beast. I'd really love you to make a cover of Caraphernelia by Pierce the Veil or Caverns by Thank You Scientist
How can we switch from major notes to minor notes while singing and change the vibe of the song completely? Givethe song yk our own rendition? Maybe a future video idea
This is GREAT! This is my favorite Alter Bridge song, but I never listen to Alter Bridge because I hate the vocal tone (I won't use that word "nasal"! :) ) of Myles Kennedy's voice. Yours is much better. I liked this vid at second 3. Is that okay?
Cool...Welcome to the course! Playing an instrument helps your singing and singing helps your instrument playing, BUT you don't need a guitar to do well in the course. The backing tracks and practice materials provide you with everything you need to get the most out of the material.

You you think you'll ever do a cover of one of system of a Down's crazier songs? Something vocally crazy like Ddevil or War?
I've never seen anyone do Myles Kennedy justice. The man is a monster. Massive props to you for trying your hardest with this. Cheers brother!
Thank you! :)
I agree completely. Myles isn’t human lol. Chris nailed it 🙌🏻
