Read the title and came expecting to watch some moron stumble through some half-assed explanation as to why he's a more classically educated singer than Myles and therefore Myles sucks, and instead I was blown away by one of the single most well explained singing tutorials I have ever seen, and as a young'n I watched a LOT of singing tutorials. This was absolutely amazing, you managed to explain what you were doing in such a way that even someone with only a beginner's course in singing can follow (if perhaps not execute, haha). You have an instant subscriber. Keep up the amazing work, my man.
Such a great comment, thank dude. More to come stay tuned!
Yes, the title was absolute click bait.
I'd say 100% of those dislikes are due to the confusing title, I bet those people didn't even watch it tbh man
The Brothers Dude lolz on dislikes hahaha
The title is serious click Bait!
Please change the title - the video is bloody fantastic but the title might be misconstrued as "Myles Kennedy can't sing" - which is clearly not your intent in this video.
My latest video has a better title, peace out brother
Carl Wehden good on you
That was my first reaction when seeing the video title. It got my attention because I was curious about why "Myles Kennedy can't sing." What I found was quite different once I started watching it. :)
Myles is by far my favourite singer ever.
he's in my top 10 all time no doubt
I know this is a older video but it’s the first one I’ve heard of your channel. How nice it is to hear a vocal coach who actually has a beautiful voice.
nice one, enjoy your singing
👍
Thank You for this video Carl. I am currently working on my vocal mechanics. This was spurred by Chris Cornell's passing. I am very attracted to Chris' and Myles' vocal styles. You have opened my eyes to understanding how these vocalists achieve a very powerful delivery even in a quiet section of a song. Now I will be driven to understand it. Following you looking for more details 😊
Myles Kennedy is uber talented. Love his range and the variation of techniques used. Have you heard his live duet on The Sound of Silence with Disturbed??? He hits some POWER high notes!
Doing Myles reaction soon
Just fyi, Myles pronounced carry just as it is normally spoken here in the States. Thanks for your vids!
yeah I should have mentioned this point well said
These Brits always think they're the ones speaking properly... :p
Wow I thought Myles was good before but after your excellent analysis I’m just blown away by him and you to be honest, great work very impressive are you UK based
Saw slash and Myles at the paramount on Long Island a few weeks ago. He made it look so effortless. Never once reached or grasped at a note. His stage presence wasn’t the best, but the singing was so beyond excellent that it didn’t matter. He seems like a really humble down to earth guy.
I was pleasantly surprised to watch this video.
Your breakdown is spot on sir
One of his favorite places to play is an old library in Spokane
No mics, about fourty people.
Complete silence
We're all so proud of him here
yeah he's a true pro
M Whitelaw you’re saying Myles plays regularly in a small library in Spokane??
What I found most interesting about this video is just how much your room loves your open (non-forced) voice.
I saw the video and literally only clicked on it to COMMENT ANGRILY, Myles is one of my all time favorite singers of all time (along with Chris Cornell and Layne Staley) but that was not at all what this was. His voice is absolutely amazing and beautiful and I can't say enough but Thanks for using his gorgeous voice and style for your tutorial.
nice one Betty, I'm a big fan of Myles to :)
I NEVER tire of his voice... So Very Beautiful. ❤
You can achieve that vowel colouring by putting R quality and an E underneath everything (Ree) - you get that grungy sound like Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell, Tool, Nickleback, Creed, Kurt Cobain, etc.
yeah you can defo hear a bit of that in his sound no doubt about it. He doesn't over do it though, the Nickleback guy sounds almost like a cartoon character just takes it a bit to far.
Oh God those Kerrang pop bands like NickelBack and Creed took R quality to another level LOL
Oh here we go let's kick Nickelback - what a cliche. Please tell me and demonstrate (as it's so easy) how he gets that powerful chesty sound right up into the Bb4 in this acoustic version of How You Remind Me ruclips.net/video/NzoDz1wsCio/видео.html
not hating just saying for my taste he took it a bit far and Myles gets a good balance but it is subjective no doubt
I can show ya.....
Just ran across your channel for the first time, and had to follow after watching the full video instead of just a snipit like I was planning. It also brought to mind another video I saw lately with Music is Win interviewing Mark Tremonti, where Mark commented about how he doesn't have to worry about the key he's writing songs for Alter Bridge in due to the fact that "Miles can hit any damn note he wants". I'll be working my way through your backlist of videos!
yeah, the dude is a freak no doubt :)
Nice video, man! Thanks for posting it!!!
I'm so clad I found you, you are the best vocal instructor, yah! Thank you, thank you, thank you Carl John, for all the great videos , advice and lessons.
Cheers 🍺
'Myles kennedy' =god of using head voice and chest voice.....i'm from india though..i used to listen his almost songs.....he's an inspiration..👏
First off awesome tutorial. From how the title looked I at first thought “Oh no is someone actually bashing on MYLES?! He’s a lyrical, vocal genius man WTF?! But I was pleasantly suprised, watched all the way through and enjoyed the hell out of it!
The inspiration and thought provoking lyrics Myles writes is FROM THE SOUL. It’s literally carried me through rough spots in life having uplifting “likeminded” and relatable songs not only beautifully written but are instrumental genius that complements the power of the lyrics. Our day in age music is losing its lyrical power and having substance and meaning in what we listen to musically, which is why I respect and adore this man and the people he’s played with on his journey in music. Myles I believe has not only touched his fans but lyrically has touched those he’s worked with as he always, ALWAYS writes from the heart in a way we all as human beings can relate to in some way or another that is REAL and not any of the fake shit we have being pushed in the industry now.
Anyhow with that said, I enjoyed really this video, you got a subscriber and I look forward to seeing more content like this!! Keep on Rockin’ 🤘🏼
cheers dude, yeah it's impossible to bash Myles really unless you are being dishonest he has to many strengths and very few weaknesses. This is a great and emotional comment really made me smile thanks!
You are great man!! So happy I found your video and channel. I just subscribed. Love to find someone who has great care and gives importance, to detail. Is what makes the difference. Hopefully we can get in touch soon. Huge props man. Cheers, JorgeAndres.
cheers Jorge great to have you here
I love that someone that can't come close to singing like Myles is instructing people how to sing like Myles..... Like wtf....
Live And Inspired lots of good info here if you can't see it the problems at your end brother x
The info IS there, and let us face the music, Myles only can be Myles, this is about techniques.
Pinetop Renegades true true
Pinetop Renegades I disagree, there are people who can.
I think perhaps they can come close, but not every single nuance every single time. Truly the only benefit would be to replace him in his absence or have a tribute band etc. Clearly you think too much like a purist to appreciate the study Carl has done here to help folks understand what is happening and why.
Thank you so much for doing such a detailed lesson. I'm learning to sing and this video is amazing!!!!
You make it sound so "simple", it makes me think that we can all be singers :) How do we get started? Your ebook or a skype lesson? and if so, how much is that?
Was expecting something totally different.Amazing video, great Jon.I've been taking singging lessons for a few months And Myles is one of my favourite singers. This video helped me to notice some of his stuffs.🤘(Hope that You make one from Mark Tremonti)
Cheer Igor, glad you enjoyed best of luck with your own singing
My favorite vocalist of all time, and one of Alter Bridge's best songs. You're awesome, Carl! :)
sweet dude hope you're all good
Hey Carl, love your breakdown of this gorgeous song and amazing vocalist. You should hear me say carry and never. It's our accents here😁 Even though he is not from the South, he has some good old Southern Twang. Lovely...❤
U explain this shit perfectly dude, please keep on keepin on lol. I never bother leaving comments but I really like ur teaching style man.
Thanks a lot for this detailed video Sir.
Love Myles' voice, have you done a vid on the more powerful side of his or anyone else's voice, like on Isolation (AB)?
no this is more in line with what I coach and fully understand some things he's done are harder for me to demo well.
I'm VERY interested in your evaluation of one, or all 3, of the first releases from his first ever solo album Year of the Tiger. During his various interviews about this solo record he talks about how he uses his lower register on this album because he doesn't have to "sing over a wall of amps"... and the fact that it fits the songs and instruments he's using much better.
might do another video about him at some point for now I need to move on to other artists.
I wish I had you as a vocal coach! Amazing!!
Inspiring
Dude, please.. change this title.. you're losing views and likes because of that.
OK Ok... done ;)
It's for your own good. Great vid btw. ;)
Alexandre Scher What was the original one?
Could you please do Chris Stapleton "sometimes I cry" next? Excellent stuff btw! Thanks so much!
Content is good, it just that im wondering why you put these kind of titles to your videos?
to attract viewers? seems backfired though
Loved the background music upstairs
Excellent video Carl, thanks for the in depth explanation. I'm interested in the concept you talk about towards the end of the video - maintaining pressure/compression as you ascend from the top of chest into mix/head voice. How would you advise going about practising this on a day to day basis with a view to strengthening the top end end of your chest voice and ultimately being able to maintain that pressure? Cheers
carefully and in time, if you are able to stay narrow and keep good form on the 'buh' and 'guh' exercises that's going to be the best way to really understand how to do it safely and consistently, most people lose form as they go higher. Myles doesn't so he's able to 'sing wide but stay narrow' which is why he sounds so open and free.
Why dont you call the things by its name?? Those high notes that you just say keeps the compression and clossure are sang on MIXED VOICE but you never mention that. That makes these to be a bad tutorial. Because you dont call the things by its name.
Someone sounds a lot like Tom Yorke from Radiohead
can you do a video on jeff buckley?
possibly some of his material is easier than others for my voice type.
Please do, his voice was unique!
This would be great for you to cover!
This is actually really really good.
i wouldn't say the song is simple. the chorus is definitely not easy to sing for most
it's simple in terms of the chords but yeah the point is simple music can be very hard to execute at a professional level, this song is a great example anyone can play it but only a handful of people will be able to perform it at this level, I can't but I can get across enough to show people what he's doing and how it's working.
Perfection is what isn't wanted from the fans of Miles.
It isn't about perfection and those that choose to share how he could have done better. You probably are scholars.
He did not sing for you the scholars, he sang for those of us that are not you and are not perfect.
Share and have fun criticizing but it isn't relevant to those that are fans.
Yes, we are trying to perfect our lives, but it is from and through the imperfections and the trials and tribulations and the pains we experience because then, we understand life and I do think survival matters more than hitting a proper note and within the proper timing.
Thank you so much for making these videos
no worries stay tuned more coming soon.
I wanna learn to sing so bad. Too bad no vocal coaches around
Hi, is it important to have a neutral larynx and diaphragmatic support? I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say squeeze and pressure, but the more I practice what you call squeeze and pressure the more I understand it to equate to neutral larynx and stomach support--(at least it makes sense in my mind). Am I on the same train of thought as what you're encouraging? Thanks for the wonderful and insightful videos!
You have to be able to maintain a consistent larynx position through your entire range, this is what SS / SLS will teach you, in other words staying on one vowel throughout and not letting it warp and get wide at the top. Support is a difficult term it really depends what you mean but I think we are on the same page here, if you mean you need to push the right amount of air through the cords yes defiantly and you'll feel that happening more on compressed sounds and less on light ones.
This video in particular made a lot of sense to me. Thank you!
Edit you title mate I came here expecting u to be saying he can't sing
You sing as well as he does, if you weren't so geeky looking you could probably be a rockstar too 😂
if only I didn't have to falsetto notes I used to be able to hit.. (eg the "and Whooooo...")
Adam Busby you can still hit them you just have to know how
Hey Carl :) I was wondering if you could do a video about Tim McIlrath, the front singer of Rise Against ... He sings very high mixed notes but you'd never think that they are that high because his voice has a natural deepness I guess ... could you elaborate on that and (I don't know where you stand on fry screaming) also maybe how he combine singing and screaming ? thanks for reading !!
just checked him out here ruclips.net/video/m7hmlSWzY4E/видео.html he's a chest puller, towards what I'm trying to get people away from on this channel, singing like that is risky given time and repetition.
Carl Wehden thanks for the reply dude ! :) okay I guess I love the music so much that I was hoping he had a good technique ... But still, could you recommend a video of yours that allows me to practice singing in that kind of style ? thanks dude !
I really like your videos, they are very instructional. Now, how about something completely different, like "Remedy" from the Black Crowes?
I'm trying to focus in on the current generation more, not necessarily always the 'best' singers but one who I can pick out unusual details from to show people the hidden skills involved in this.
someone is in attack
I thought you were going to rush
Title mislead me, was ready to tear you a new one.
please be kind I'm new here :)
nice video
Sounds killer Carl! Love it 😊
Jimmy Owen nice one mate hope you're well
Woooo you are awesome
Varun Sarwate cheers dude more to come stay tuned
You couldn't possibly have chosen a more inappropriate title. the guitar instructional, "Why you can't play series" does it's own thing. Haha...Perhaps consider not insulting the artist your featuring in the title.
TheZombie4u I'm talking to the viewer not Myles 🤣
Carl Wehden, indeed. Yet the language and presentation of the title is a poor representation of the content. As a long time fan of Myles, I'm simply saying that were you to include an accurate description you may find more people who are interested. As it is you have written what reads as an insult. through worded presentation alone, and not the video content. Honestly it seems in poor taste. Again, as someone who enjoys Mr. Kennedy's vocals greatly, the title of your video inspires an immediate negative reaction as opposed to intrigue. I wish you the best of luck, but this sort of presentation is a tough sell, for me at least.
Will have a think, the problem I'm facing is my most popular videos have these kinds of titles, so it's catch 22.. I'd much rather have a positive title but people are less likely to click something that is plain and doesn't stand out. I'm not sure what the solution is frankly but I actually largely agree with what you're saying.
Carl Wehden you already provide strong instruction. The quality of content alone will elevate your channel. Something along the lines of, " A let's sing series: featuring Artist Name." It would be refreshing to see more REAL high level vocal analysis /instructional content as opposed to any click bait "let's hate, oh no wait..." headers on videos. You've clearly got a talent for teaching and that is big deal unto itself. Thanks for the correspondence. have a good one man!
TheZombie4u thanks for feedback and encouragement dude all the best 😉
well done
cheers Boogyjuggy
Jack white
I'm never this early to a video lol.
lucky!
Should be banned for destroying this masterpiece.
Tony Marshall lol it's a tutorial it's not meant to be pretty just a nuts and bolts type video cheers though x
Myles can sings....you waste... your time!!!it's better writtings songs or sing like Myles ....!neroxelwna.....haha!!!!!
A bit pretentious
probably, it's a tricky balance x
yep
Maybe don't make the titles of your videos make you automatically come off that way
There are those who do and those (turd polishers) that analyze what people do..
everyone does both, how do you think these guys learn to sing? They copy people who came before and put their own spin on it ;)
This guy Is a joke
He's a bit flat
