The Dragon Wing Begonias are easily one of the most popular plants at nurseries and garden centers across USA. In this video I go through everything that is needed to know in order to grow the very best plants possible. I show the conditions required, how to properly prune them, and propagate your plants. #begonia #plantvibrations #angelwingbegonia
One of the best videos on dragon wing begonias. The explanations are clear, and close-ups are helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m sure a wholesale grower doesn’t want to hear this. But I have been growing dragon wings for at least 5 years all from cuttings from 3 original hanging baskets purchased 5 years ago. I prune heavily just before the first frost and all the pruned stems get propagated. I winter over plants in baskets in my basement under fluorescent light and put them out again in the spring. I have over 30 plants now all going strong, and a few nursery trays full of newly propagated babies. When I prune in the summer, the pruned tip always goes back in the same pot to propagate which helps make the overall plant much fuller and bushy.
You’ve found the secret!! You’re growing them exactly as you should! Love hearing it
You’re terrific! I love your enthusiasm and your personality. You were very informative from the very beginning to the end of the video. You’re the type of person one would love to sit and have a cup of coffee with and discuss plant growing.
There’s nothing better than a conversation like that!
Love it! I have an angel wing that is probably my fav out of all my plants. It’s leaves are just beautiful & pink flowers mostly year round
Ooooh so nice!!
I love dragonwing begonias, I have been growing them for about 10 years, but I have never propagated them. So I look forward to trying what you just showed us. Thank you and I love your channel. You really explain things well.
Cooool! They prop so fast!
Wonderful... So ready to watch! I love your enthusiasm and knowledge.
☺️
I enjoy how you teach on plants. Especially the questions you ask. I love my Dragon Wing Begonia
So nice of you :)
Thank you both the informative video!! 😊
I hope you enjoyed it!
I love my dragon wing plant. I needed to know how to propagate and cut it back. I planted three stems that I cut back. Very excited! Thanks!
I hope the video was helpful!!
Great video! Thank you! We have been overwintering these, but learned a bunch from this video.
Glad it was helpful!
So glad I watched this. I was just about to trash it, even though it is still beautiful and still blooming here in Pittsburgh. So off to propagation and trying new things. Thanks so much from a new subscriber❤
yesss do it!! mine is doing great as a houseplant at the moment
@@plantvibrations You inspired me to rescue a bunch of these from my apartment garden during the first frost lol
Appreciated this video and the awesome information you provided thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!!
Just discovered your videos!!! Love some time lapse videos.
So informative especially of the cutting back at the node!! ❤ it does have an Asian look. Lovely plant and ur enthusiasm for it is great to enjoy.
Thank you for watching Katie!
Great video! As Fall and Winter get closer, I want to do this to my Dragon Wing Begonias so I can plant them again next year!
Theyre so much fun to prop!
Good morning. I have an angel wing ( underside of the leaf is burgundy). Thanks for the information. I’ll be able to better care for it now!
Hope it was helpful!
Thanks so much great help. I just got a beautiful huge dragon wing begonia for Mother’s Day. Definitely needs cutting back. Looking forward to propagating too!
Good luck!
I grew beautiful begonias outside this year. Thanks for the info on how to cut them back. I'm going to bring them inside over the winter.
I’ve got some propagating at the moment! It’s a great houseplant
Great video! I always wondered where your plant obsession came from, now I know 😊
Thank you for watching!!
I never did it that way always had stuck them in water to grow roots so thanks fo the tip ❤
Thanks for watching!
Good information I love begonias thank you for the info
Thanks for watching !
Beautiful plants. Have a great 4th! Take care and God bless
You too adam!
@@plantvibrations Thank you Devin
I came here wondering if I could successfully cut them back, and you hit the topic exactly! Thank you!
They’re great for cutting back!!
Definitely going to try this.
Please do!
Really helpful. Thanks 😊
Glad it was helpful!
I just found out I could chop them back. Best tip thanks!
Omg so glad you know, so important with these
You are a good instructor. Peace
:)
Very good videos you explain very well Thank you 😊
You are welcome!
I will definitely will try this propagate method
It’s super fast and easy
Great job on your video! So helpful.
Just bought my first pink dragon wing begonia. It goes perfect with the new planter I got for my bday. The very helpful young lady at the nursery suggested ferti*lome Cactus potting mix. Do you agree?
No!! Don’t use that! These babies like a nice rich medium because they grow soooo fast they will quickly fill out the pot with roots so no need to provide extra drainage
Thank you for the video ... now I know what to do with my missies 😊
Have fun!
Thanks! Good info
Thanks for watching!!
I wanna get me one of those dragon wings plants I like the red blooms.
They’re such great performers foo
I live in north Wisconsin and would like to winter my dragon wings they are big and beautiful could you tell me how to do that indoors for at least 5 months thank you you have a great channel
If you saw the smaller one I had in the video in the blue pot, I have that under a single grow light inside, not really near any windows. And the growth is quite good! The canes don’t get as large and way less flowers, but it is happy
Can I replant cuttings for most plants? I like your room full of plants and thanks you
It really depends on the plant. Many can be propagated that way
Thanks for another great video. I'm getting ready to repot my silver mist. Do I prune first and then repot or does it matter. Currently it has crispy leaf edges. Please let me know your thoughts.
The order of operations shouldn’t affect its success! Sounds like you know exactly what you’re doing!
I love growing these!! Mine are growing in the hot afternoon sun here in zone 5b, Illinois. Do you know how to overwinter them?
They’re great! I’d chop it back like 50% and bring it inside and keep it as a houseplant! Next to a south window or with a grow light even better
@@plantvibrations Thanks for the advice! I'll do that. Wish me luck!
This was really helpful. I inherited a dragon wing that came from cutting after cutting on the original which belonged to my great-great-grandmother. No pressure. My questions are 1) how do I get mine to flower? I haven't ever fertilized it, nor have I put it outside, and it has never bloomed. Would either/both/neither help? And 2) my mom's has a couple of dead canes I would like to extricate without hurting the plant. She passed a year ago, so I want to be very careful with hers. Help?
Definitely placing it outside will help with flowering! And for salvaging the stems, treat them like I showed for the propagation and each stem can turn into a plant of its own!
Could you explain how propagate begonia foliosa miniata?Thank you(Sorry,my English is bad)
Intenta hacerlo de la misma forma que muestro en ese video, tomando in sección de un rama como 15cm, quitando las hojas al fondo y poniendo en un pequeño maceta de buen substrato
Could you also explain or talk about your lighting
See other comment!
Can I propagate my cane begonia in Sept its getting tall or should I wait until the end of winter?
Keep up the good work😎
Yes absolutely! Now is best
I bought some begonias a couple years ago I’m going to try your method I’ll let you know what happens still trying to get used to your short hair😊❤
haha have you seen the bleached look yet?
There will be frost outside soon. Can I just trim back my plant (removing all the flowers) and hang it indoors through the winter?
Yep you can. You can cut it back as much as you’d like, altho I tend to cut back quite a lot but it grows back so fast even indoors
Thankyou, now I know how to prune my leggy begonia, and propagate those cuttings...buy why isn't mine blooming more?
Did it have enough light over summer?
Hi there.
I brought my dragon wing begonia inside in the fall. It is VERY leggy right now.
Should I cut it back now or wait till closer to spring? I’m in Ontario Canada…zone 5
Id cut it now. Then by spring you may decide to chop it back again before moving outside
@@plantvibrations thank you.
One of my begonias have like a rust around the outer edge of the leaf. What is causing this? I’ve never had it happen before. All the other plants are beautiful. I live in zone 7b
Did it get put into lots of sun without first acclimating?
@@plantvibrations no it’s not in direct sun. Only morning sun. I’ve never had any issue with them. They grow beautifully, but it looks really bad today. I’m thinking I should remove it to keep any disease from transferring to the other plants. Thanks for answering
Nice
🙌
I just bought one of these & most of the leaves are pink but new leaves are green.
Depending on the lighting you’ll have more or less pink
❤
:)
Thank you, you encouraged me to cut back my dragon wings.
Love hearing that. They grow so fast!
I appreciated the video and the enthusiasm. We have been planting them for years.
I do think that you might just have a preference that is missing the plot. The plants are supposed to be top heavy. That is the way they have been hybridized to clump. I think you've lost the whole charm of the plant by forcing it to be something it's not. That said. Everybody likes what they like.
They’re certainly bred to be vigorous but in my experience without pinching them the top heaviness can lead to broken stems. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
"Samantha is going to Kill me!" "No she is not, I am going to clean up before she gets home" (and finds out, UNTIL she sees the video, that is)
Heheheh she never found out
look like you are trying to grow stumps and not flowers.
I don’t understand what you mean
Close up pics would be nice. May be later in the vid ? ,but SO MUCH BLAH BLAH BLAH..... I moved on.....
Thanks for the feedback
