In a corner of Santa Fe, one of Bogotá’s seedier neighborhoods, a woman named Luz Marina runs a nursery for the children of prostitutes who work in the city’s red light district. She charges $5 to look after babies and young children while their mothers sell their bodies, often for between $15 and $30. When the mothers can’t pay, Luz Marina doesn’t make a fuss, looking after their children for free. Over the years, women have left babies with her and never returned. For all her work helping children, she receives no assistance from the local government - she does it because nobody else will.
VICE News spent time with Luz Marina in Bogotá, documenting her nursery for Bogota's forgotten children.

Andrea is no more than 26 years old, but she has a 13-year-old daughter, meaning she was probably around 13 when she gave birth. She said the money used to be easier. Probably because she was a child. I hope things get easier for her and her children.

I was born near this city, I was abandoned by my birth mother and left to die. There was a good chance she was a young, sex worker and I have always been so angry with who I am. I don't know if I can make it through this document but I just want to let people like me know: you aren't a mistake just bc ur parents didn't want you or never intended to have you. Fighting!

I had a similar situation in the US, but CPS returned me back to my abusive father numerous times before realising how messed up it was. First entered at three months old, was finally adopted around four years of age. All I know is: my birth mother is doing better (apparently she was an addict and did some SW) and my birth dad is stillness in prison, and actually got beat up a few times since. I’m nearing 18 and doing much better :)

I've found that colombians find themselves to be proud on the "beauty of their women " but it goes too far! Colombians always talk about their women as they want to sell them. They want to convince you that they are beautiful (even if they are not) and they have a price.
Why the mothers? Clearly they chose to leave their children here and not get a decent job, maybe not all chose it but they shouldn’t live with it

I am an orphan from Chile and was adopted to the US at a year old in 1980. This room looks like the few stories I've heard about the orphanage I was in. My birth mother was 16 when she had me, unmarried but that's really all I know. I am so blessed and grateful for the opportunities I have had growing up in the US. I have raised one child and have a new baby and am so happy to have had them here. I feel for my mom in Chile I found her on social media a few years ago and although she is happy, she is still very poor and struggling.

I was thinking the same exact thing!! I'm sure getting some people together we could find a way to get a real safe haven for these babies because they deserve it! Also help for the mothers to get out of that situation and maybe some type of training. I know things are a lot different out there.

@@khazms some kids never go to school though, school is very expensive. In where I live I pay up to 60k+ (16k$) dhs just for me and my brother to go to school, and as we get older the fees start to increase. Even putting your kid in a nursery costs around 1.6k$ which is around 6k dhs. I know some parents who don't have enough money to send their kids to school, they just have to stay at home. And they don't get taught at home most of the time since their parents didn't have proper education or are always at work.

This video brings tears to my eyes. Because no one chooses to be born in hardships or poverty. Life deals you a hand at random and you have to make the best of it. I know everyone is sad about the children, but my heart goes out even more for the mother’s, who aren’t sure if they will ever see their kids again. They don’t know if their next John will beat and murder them or rob them. They don’t know if they day care lady will abuse or sell their children. It’s a gut wrenching feeling to feel this low as a person and you’re literally doing everything to make ends meet. It felt good hearing that one mother saying she is going to quit being a sex worker so her daughter does not follow in her footsteps.
My heart goes out for the children more because if they end up with the maturity and basic logic people should have, they’re dealing cards no one would ever choose if they had the chance to choose and they have no control over it, they’re living in disgusting conditions and especially being with these kind of mother’s. I cannot say for certain but more than likely there will be anger brewing from these children in the near future.

Everyone is different, but if I were born into such bad circumstances, I would find a way to make myself infertile to stop the cycle. But that's just me.

ive lived in bogota for more the 12 years prostitucion rights and gay lgbt rights are in a high point at this moment . except for the fascit inspector general who denys homosexual rights .
You know if those ladys turned in their kids to the icbf one of the best child support systems in the world they would find better life.

I had a friend that was a sex worker and has been struggling with addiction for a really long time. When her son was born I made her a deal that no matter when and for how long she could drop him off at my house as long as she made sure he had what he needed. I didn’t want her loosing her son or her son to be in situations he shouldn’t be in when she was using. She still has her son thanks to me but had a daughter and moved to another province and I couldn’t help her like I did before. She lost custody of her daughter to the father and as far lost rights to see her also. It breaks my heart cause my friend has been on the right track so many times and then relapses... she lost her daughter cause of a relapse and she had been clean for a really long time actually. Some people deserve help and others are just beyond help. Sex work doesn’t make you a bad person, its good money especially when you have kids and are a single mom.

The issue with her is not that she's a sexworker but that she's a drug addict.
People are trying to normalise sex work as ethical employment but it isnt. By taking money for sex, you are encouraging and enabling a culture of cheapening human beings, as though you can exchange the most intimate part of yourself to a complete stranger for cash. It isnt a wonder that sex work is usually associated with people with a myriad of mental health issues, both the workers and the users. It is wrong and also contributes to the growing problem of loneliness. People are not working at developing strong relationships and families if they just satisfy their desires with poor desperate strangers and then continue. To be a person who follows their desires with no concern of the effect of your behaviour, it destroys your humanity. Sex work may be a last resort for people and I feel terrible for them. But do not normalise something that kills the human soul.

I am an orphan from Chile adopted at age one. I found my birth mother on social media and she is lovely. It's definitely been hard growing up in the States and feeling not quite 100% American but not 100% Chilean either. My best to you.

I was adopted in Colombia by two great humans, I grew up in Bogotá very far away from Santa Fe and this are the kind of reality checks that makes you be grateful and thank your parents for giving you a chance in life.

Colombia is a very beautiful Country. The people of Colombia are the most friendliest I have met while here. Yes, there are places to avoid, but that is TOLD to you when you arrive at your Hotel. See Bogota, enjoy the foods, mingle with the people and you will have the time of your life. Walking tours. Bicycle tours.. Sites to visit.. And be sure to enjoy the ride up Cerro De Monserrate !!!

I've been watching VICE videos for some time already and it is difficult to cope with this as a human being with consciousness. Really difficult...
Especially in this video, the kids have no fault. I am thinking what would have been for me if the chance happened to be one of them. I think everyone should think from this perspective instead of wanting more "show" from VICE. I appreciate the hardcore reality, this is what happens in the world and people dreaming in their wonderland shouldn't ignore all of this misery.
