Schizophrenia has a wide range of manifestations. It depends a lot on what you were like before you became schizophrenic, that is if you were so fortunate as to have had a normal life. Your upbringing has a lot to do with how you respond to being schizophrenic. When you are schizophrenic, you are capable of doing anything that you think of doing but it doesn’t mean you will but you might. If you don’t have a mindset to do things that are bad and illegal you won’t be thinking of doing them. Still, there is a tendency of doing things that you wouldn’t do otherwise. This is why people are hospitalized because they get into trouble because they are a problem when suffering psychosis. It is 24/7 like the other person said so it just depends on how much trouble you get into. I never took medication so I can’t tell you about those kinds of reactions because I cured myself by ignoring the hallucinations and delusions so that they lost their power over me. I worked some forty years and I retired with a pension from working thirty years at a high security airport.

Please look into pasteurized dairy and or cow vs sheep/goat. My son has Schizoaffective disorder (possibly with bipolar) and I have a PhD in hard sciences and have researched all this a LOT. A peer reviewed journal publication from several decades ago, with medication resistant schizophrenia patients in the UK, found that positive symptoms went away when wheat and dairy were removed from their diet. They then returned when staff surreptitiously reintroduced these food items. Now, while they didn't specifically say, the dairy was likely pasteurized/homogenized, as well as cow based. Both of these are serious inflammation problems, & the peer reviewed citations of this assertion are in Dr. Catherine Shanahan's book "Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Foods".
My son has started a ketogenic diet around the same time as you, and we are focusing on raw sheep and goat dairy, largely sourced online and partly on sale. It is doable! In terms of gluten, the study may not have used sourdough, and perhaps had glyphosate contamination (1980s was the study publication date if I recall, not sure if they had grain from the US there but may have due to cost savings, and we started spraying around a decade sooner...)
Lastly, I had the same experience as your husband when I cut back on carbs in my 30's: greatly reduced joint pain. However, I recommend making real bone stock. It has FAR more bioavailable glucosaminoglycans than the typical pill offerings. It should gel up in your fridge. By the way, Dr. Shanahan's book is on Audible.
Oh, & I, like your partner, am also (mainly) doing the keto diet for now, but have been fat adapted for years. It took me a good 4 weeks to get past the tired phase when I first started time restricted eating, for what it is worth... Onwards!

To your points about accessibility: in addition to compliance, having the energy for meal prep, access to keto food options, etc., it seems that having someone in the external environment (such as Nicole) who can provide ENCOURAGEMENT would be important to success.
This experiment has inspired quite the peanut gallery in the comments, with people saying things like “you’re on a dangerous path,” or “this didn’t work for me so it won’t work for you,” or “you’re gonna trigger your ED,” or “you need carnivore/plant-based/vegan because that’s what I do.”
I know that when I hear that stuff from others, I tend to mentally internalize it, and then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Having someone knowledgeable who could ground your thoughts and fears sounds like almost a requisite for success with dietary interventions as a self-determined treatment path.
Thanks for sharing, guys! I’d be curious to hear about your anaerobic training once you’re back in the gym. Best of luck to you! ❤

I really appreciate updates like these. Because I always turn my nose up at people trying these diets and "my life has changed" and there is 0 context on what it is actually like for them. Like they're selling you a potion rather than responsibly documenting their experience and how it may be different from others. Helps me think very thoughtfully on how I would approach this diet, or if its something I'm willing to try.

  • @user-yn9po5nl4o
    @user-yn9po5nl4o 3 месяца назад +5

I agree with whoever said that there should have been a discussion of pros and cons (ie possible risks) beforehand. Even when dietary changes are made for good medical reasons, they have potential risks. And with the keto craze going on at large, few influencers make those risks known. I am really thrown by the comment about “keto being an ED treatment.” I know there are studies out there on this subject but that’s even a super triggering thing to be throwing out to an audience who has expressed concerns about their own EDs. That’s really a conversation a person should have with their RD /treatment team because it could go so wrong so quickly. Also, a note about keto “reducing bloat.” Our bodies store glycogen from carbs, and glycogen molecules hold water. When we use up our glycogen stores, we lose the accompaniment weight from those water molecules. So that’s all that’s going on. It’s not as though “carbs cause bloating” or anything like that. People need to understand normal biology if they’re going to speak about this without inadvertently contributing to diet culture. Honestly, I am excited about keto being a potential treatment for many mental health issues, but it must be handled with care in the messed up culture we find ourselves in.

At the risk of being a busybody, I want to share some habits that help with sleep/circadian rhythm. View sunset light directly (not through a window) for 2 - 20 minutes. After you come back inside, wear blue-light-blocking glasses until you go to bed. Try to put devices away/stop watching tv at least one hour before going to sleep. In the morning, view sunlight directly for 2-20 minutes. Viewing sunrise is a wonderful, nourishing habit, but I think before 10AM works! Maintain consistent bedtimes and wake times as much as possible. This is a super powerful intervention -- taken mostly from Dr. Andrew Huberman's suggestions. Remember: Keto mimics fasting, fasting mimics sleep. Sleep is when our bodies heal and repair. Sleep is a HUGE factor. With all good wishes.

      @kimberlyf4888 3 месяца назад

I'm not so sure that the advice is to wear blue blocking glasses all day, but certainly after the sun starts going down. One other thing that Huberman said is that viewing bright overhead lights after sunset can suppress the production of melatonin (messing with sleep onset), but that viewing light outdoors as sunset approaches is a strategy to mitigate that. I try to dim my home lights as much as possible in the evening, but on nights when we have a dinner out or some other after dark plans, this is a helpful tool.

I have a family member who did this exact same thing, initially it helped them feel physically better, they still stick strictly to it, . Unfortunately they did become unwell although it may help in some ways for some ways I would like to see some long term research around mental illness, initially I think it was a distraction for them I personally don’t believe it is sustainable long term. This is just my own opinion having working in the mental health profession and having a close family member who did this and still does adhere to this lifestyle. I do wish you all the best, it would be great if a Dr could comment on research and outcomes. I do understand why your so invested, I do disagree that this lifestyle and new eating habits is a medical intervention as regards to treatment of mental illness, just because I’ve not seen long term studies that have shown long term benefits with this, keto is more expensive when you’re on a tight budget. I wish you all the best, my comment is simply my own personal observation and experience both personally and professionally, others may have had a different perspective, experience

    • @mygirldarby

I agree. There are no long-term studies on ketogenic diets and schizophrenia. My brother is a psychologist and has had a dozen or so clients try keto for schizophrenia or bipolar. A few said it helped, but nobody went into remission. Of course, that's just a tiny sample and is anecdotal, but there are no studies proving keto has long-term benefits for mental illness. A few people have claimed it has helped, but I believe Lauren is dramatically overestimating what keto will do for her. I find it very sad. She's concentrating on very one-sided information that is way too optimistic for the reality of this diet "curing" her mental health. She seems to believe she already needs less medicine and that she is becoming incredibly exhausted from excess antipsychotic medication. She is going to check with her doctor about lowering the dosage, according to her latest video. I think this won't end well. I understand completely why she is doing the diet and why she is hopeful. Schizophrenia is so difficult to live with...anyone would do the same as her if they thought it could cure this illness or dramatically reduce symptoms. I just don't think it will.

    • @rowanbowyer6560

@@mygirldarby yes I agree, it’s complicated and complex condition that does change with symptoms at times, Lauren is like so many with the illness who resist taking medication, the side effects are unpleasant and unpredictable at times so it’s understandable to want something else to alleviate symptoms. I may be wrong, however I don’t think long term this will be good for her and by extension family. Only my personal opinion though.

It's hard to do keto if your not in a calorie deficit so if you're staying in ketosis that's fantastic. For anybody who's trying to do it, you can get really weird side effects and insomnia for a couple weeks. it actually takes months of either fasting or keto for your metabolism to switch over to a fat priority. It takes longer if you're older too. Keep in mind if you don't have a good reason to do it it's not proven as a healthier diet than a high carb diet, but it's lifechanging for some people and a powerful lifestyle intervention for inflammation, some psychiatric/neurological and weight management issues. It likely is healthier than a balanced diet for a minority of people, but there isn't any evidence for that yet, but for certain symptoms it's clearly effective in some people.

My son has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder Bi Polar type at age 14. He is also on the autism spectrum. He struggled with acute psychosis and was put on a monthly injection of paliperidone. He is a lot better now, but my concern is him being so young and on this medication. I don't know if he has a life long mental illness or if it was just a one off psychotic episode, where he became ill during the covid lockdown. I don't mind him being on this medication because it is really working. He is able to do homeschool and he is more self regulated, but my concern is long term effects. I am interested in looking at this diet for him but will need professional advise from his doctor and a nutritionist. Thank you for sharing this, I appreciate what you are doing and wish you Lauren and Rob the best of health. By the way, how will I get a teenager to stick to a particular diet, I don't know. He could try it himself when his more mature maybe?

My concern was around the financial barriers and ability to stick with it if someone is still actively experiencing psychosis or any symptoms surrounding paranoia of poisoning. My work is primarily with a schizoaffective population so im interested in that regard but also as someone recovering from an ED and with a mood disorder myself. I know i don't feel good with starches other than utilizing them to make me sleep. Please keep us updated! The language surrounding “what we’ve been taught and fed our whole lives.” can sound anti-science. If only presenting studies that favour ketogenic diet may sound like pushing an agenda. Know that I know you would never intentionally do this.
The old school food pyramid was a scam but saying that one doesn’t need a balanced diet is scary. Keto is linked with higher rates of cardiovascular diseases because of the saturated fats consumed. People eating things like a whole lot of bacon. Keto has a place where medically necessary but for people like Rob I don’t see the benefit over just cutting out higher processed stuff but otherwise eating things in moderation and watching red meat intake and watching high fat foods.
I do hope this was done in review with you family doctors and that blood work was taken before and done again maybe after 6 months to make sure nothing is missed. I love how you both support each other and I do hope that even if this doesn’t work as expected it was still a good learning experience. ❤️❤️

I did paleo for a year and a half mainly for inflammation and to see how it would fuel me athletically. I found at first the same experience of irritability and fatigue and brain fog but adjusted after a few weeks and felt great. I also noticed my muscles showing up and looking more “cut” and a little weight loss. The difference was I didn’t measure anything and there was no dairy - which causes inflammation for many people . A few major benefits: reduced inflammation, more energy and immunity. I never once got sick during that period. I also slept great. But, by 2 years after I was back to a more standard diet - Whole Foods but added grains back in and then the occasional dessert bread, etc. A super restrictive diet, for many, isn’t sustainable, however, as you explain, your “buy-in” or “why” is more motivating than mine. Lastly, the more you do it that more you will form a habit and habit will sustain you much more than “willpower” ever will. I’m happy to see how well this is going for you and appreciate your honesty in the process. Your work is important and helps so many.

So I struggled with depression and anxiety, as well as some early signs of schizophrenia... Just about the time when the latter started happening I was lucky and heard Chris palmer on Huberman Lab Podcast. I just knew I had to try it. His story touched me so deeply and I always knew sugar had some negative effects on me. So I tried keto for about 6 months. And WOW! My depression was gone, I was about 50% as anxious and I could control my thoughts like never before. My mind was clear and I felt alive for the first time in my life. But I really struggled with IBS and some other stuff. I kept seeing videos and posts about carnivore. Really didn't believe it. But then I remembered Jordan Petersons anecdote and I just had to , once again, try it for my self.
So I did. And WOW! AGAIN! My stomach started to work. My acne cleared up. I am not anxious anymore, ahhhhh! Living in a bliss for about two weeks, I thought that surely cauliflower rice with some mushrooms cream sauce can't hurt me. My fiance was still eating keto and so I joined him for one night and had the worst night in a long time. Nightmare, cold sweats, and itchy body then I woke up with the worst feeling of doom and depression. I couldn't believe it was happening, but there I was feeling just as if I didn't make any progress in the last 6 months. It took about 2-3 days before I felt normal. About a week later I tried eating nuts and the feelings were very similar. Been eating eating carnivore ever since and feeling awesome everyday! It's been over a year since I started keto and 6 months since I started carnivore. Best experiments of my life. I have gained so much muscle, endurance (both mental and physical), my sleep quality is above any expectations and sooooo much more!
I hope you give this at least a thought. Keto is great! Carnivore is just better!

So Awesome to see you guys doing so well. I am seriously struggling with sleeping at the moment, but that is to do with my COPD and struggling to breathe and going into severe panic attacks whenever I lay down, which leads me to finding it impossible to sleep, maybe for 2-3 days. I understand these situations and just strive to survive these episodes, but still difficult. I try to maintain a 'positive' attitude but struggle with my my "Anxiety/Depression" Medication Treatment at these times. Although I am 'Conscious' of my "Anxiety/Depression'" Diagnosis during these breathless (COPD?) episodes, I do lapse on my Medication which is because of my inability to Sleep, but this complicates my sleep pattern also. I struggle to manage these sleepless 'Episodes', I Try to sleep but Panic takes over due to my "Breathless" feeling. I try to stay positive although severely frustrated and panicking with inability to sleep. I have My Guitar Hobby and Walking to assist in getting through these episodes. I am hoping to sleep tonight from being awake for 3 days/nights ..... I just have no control over these "Breathless" Sleep stopping Episodes. Again Thankyou for all you do. How encouraging! I cannot emphasize how important having your family's support is. The transition phase from the SAD diet can be challenging, for sure, because it does go against the grain of what we've been taught, and it's not what we're used to. But you gradually adapt and lose a lot of the cravings and longing for old comfort foods. The cost of the diet does not have to be excessive; ground beef is a mainstay in our home. We transitioned our kids, too, and no longer use food as treats or rewards. It becomes natural after a short time, for them. The tedium of measuring also dies away, as you get familiar with amounts to consume. There is so much positive here! Also, with respect to cost, don't forget to consider the reduction in medical costs associated with the long-term reduction of inflammation in your body; taking care of those hurting knees by reducing inflammation now could offset the need for a knee replacement later! Not to mention heart disease, diabetes, and all the other associated illnesses! Keep up the good work. You guys are awesome!

I got hipped to Kraepelin writing about diet and autointoxication at the turn of the century. I'm going down the rabbit hole of history now and I'm shocked by the ideas of the 19th century. It seems that at the time there was great interest in the link between epilepsy, diabetes and mental ill health. The alienists had noted the effects of diet and women's health issues. It seems dietary intervention was not uncommon in the asylums and even more shockingly there may have been pretty widespread use of lithium bromide long before Cade and used to treat almost all conditions in the asylums. The basis for many of the treatments are rooted not only in theories about uric acid but also emerging theories of metabolism. It seems science was on a certain trajectory that only got disrupted a few decades ago with the advent of neurotransmitter medications.

Regarding initial weight loss, you probably already know this, but you retain less fluid while in ketosis than not, so that might be part of your weight loss. I've found drinking water with electrolytes to be very beneficial to maintaining proper hydration. Regarding weighing and tracking food, I think it's accurate to say that many people, once they're fully fat-adapted, can take a more flexible approach and remain in ketosis. I hope you guys will experience that as you get farther along. Thank you so much for sharing this journey!

For a mechanistic expiation of the above: Each gram of glycogen (stored glucose) is associated with 3-4 grams of water. So, as your body burns its way through the reduced dietary carbs and into the glycogen stores, the water attached to the glycogen is lost as well - which is why you lose "water weight" at the start of keto.

I am having intermittent ketones and very low, around 0,5 still, thay are actualy getting worse as I keep going. I am weighing and tracking everything I eat and glucose and ketones with a blood strip. Feeling terrible, my depression actually got worse, energy worse and I gained weight. Plus I hate this way of eating (missing the vegetables so much) I am doing the version with 20 total g of carbs, I think I will switch to net carbs because it is just not working. Feeling really lost about this. and frustrated. so hard not to throw in the towel when all this work amounts to nothing. I was really hoping it would help depression and energy and also weight..

Have you added mct oil to your diet to get ketones up? start slowly because until you're used to it mct oil can cause some gastro distress... work up slowly -I probably take 6-10 tablespoons a day - and in general add more fats to your meals, mayo - olive oil, butter. If you're doing 20 net or gross carb it is likely that you need more fat, be that from more traditional sources or MCT oil

Bloodwork confirmed that he had an immune response to it. Just mentioning this in case it resonates with you. more people need to speak out about the disorder and stand up for the fact that where normal people and not bad awful monsters that our society thinks we are I also would look up online certified therapists on youtube who can respectfully and accurately talk about depression and schizophrenia in a helpful clinical sense sense it's at lest helpful for me hope you stay well and safe ❣❤💌

Alternatively, the keto diet could also be impacting how you’re metabolizing your meds; hence, the stabilization in symptoms and increased sedation at peak plasma levels.

I eat Carnivore, which falls into keto. A good way I keep my fat up is to add butter or MCT oil to coffee (if you use a frother it’s actually nice and not oily). I also buy ribeye roasts from Costco and cut them into steaks. It has a good day to protein ratio and is cheaper than buying individual steaks. I will say it takes some time to ramp up on the fat, go slow, otherwise you’ll be running to the bathroom. It also sounds gross, but slicing butter thinly like cheese and having a pat or two is a nice little fatty snack. Something about butter specifically has a calming effect on my brain, too. So excited to see your journey! Keep going, it gets easier.

Not heard that a ketogenic diet might help with these disorders. To be honest, I was scared of ketosis. My dad had severe low body weight, and Parkinson’s, and he was afraid that he would go into ketosis so for me that’s always been a bad thing and the current fad just didn’t make sense to me, though I have eaten some keto foods because sometimes they taste good with all that fat right? Right off the bat, your affect appears to be brighter and more animated. I’m hypersensitive to any signs of flat affect because I’m a mental health worker, and I have patients across the spectrum from mild to severe and I am very happy to see a change in your affect. I’m going to ask my team psychiatrist to see if he’s heard of this treatment. Good luck.

It was actually more likely that your dad was afraid he'd go into ketoacidosis, which is different than ketosis. Ketoacidosis is a metabolic state caused by uncontrolled production of ketone bodies that cause a metabolic acidosis. While ketosis refers to any elevation of blood ketones, ketoacidosis is a specific pathologic condition that results in changes in blood pH and requires medical attention.

Still here truly wondering if Keto would ameliorate negative symptoms and anhedonia, the kind of psychopathologies of schizophrenia disorders like complacency, anhedonia

I used to take drugs in my younger days and it was the first time I realised how profound chemistry could change your state of mind. Obviously drugs are not a long term health choice and I don't touch any drugs anymore not even alcohol. But I did realise food too was a bunch of chemicals and I could change the way I felt with food. Although food is much more subtle the effects are real. So for years I've experimented with healthy ways of eating. And I've definitely seen the impacts of eating less grains and refined flours. Keep it up❤ guys!

this channel has inspired me to go back to keto at least for like 4 months possibly 6 months maybe with a week break in between. i've been having gi issues for a minute and the last month i've been sick constantly. so i am READY for a change. i want to do it to alleviate my ADHD symptoms and alleviate my GI issues and also lose weight as a byproduct.
