    Bonus tip for collectors: This exact same controller exists for the 3DO and Sega Genesis as well. They're essentially the same on both systems however the Genesis version has a 'mode' button instead of a select button. Sega and 3DO had produced their own official six face button gamepad controllers at the time for each of their systems but Nintendo didn't. This makes the SNES version a bit more interesting in my opinion but their all worth trying out!

      The 3DO version is like £60 (about $95 at the minute) plus postage, on E-Bay in case anyone wondered, and AFAIK the only other real 2D fighting game with six inputs doesn't work with 6 button controls (Samurai Showdown, you still have to press two buttons to get hard slash and hard kick)

    I have the Genesis version of this controller and I absolutely love how it was able to be a replacement for my broken 3 button controller. I'm able to use it for pretty much every Genesis game I have since it's basically a glorified 6 button controller.

  • @icenine09

    I had this for my Genesis when I was a kid. I never once considered using three fingers for the face buttons, always just used my thumb like any other controller. I liked it because the buttons we're smaller and closer together than the standard six-button Genesis controller. I also hated that the top three buttons on the standard controller were smaller than the bottom three.

    I bought the controller brand new at Walmart back in the day. It was surprising how the packaging (cardboard back with plastic blister stapled to it) seemed to be meant for the Japanese market, with Japanese writing on the front and back along with Super Street Fighter artwork. The controller had like 4 different names all over the packaging. The button layout works fine for platformers like Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World. I mostly used it with Killer Instinct. There were also Genesis (Megadrive) and 3DO versions. I never saw those at retail. My start/select buttons were gray, unlike yours. "ASCII" was somewhere on the package.

    I got one of these back in the day and it's more of a collectors item than a legit input option. The trade off to the improved face buttons is that the controller is now supported almost exclusively with your left hand as opposed to being held by both hands. This made accurate D-pad motions more of a chore which is a poor trade off IMO. Better to stick with the standard pad and get use to only using two buttons intermittently.

    I have all 3 variations of that controller. While that is Capcom's logo molded onto the plastic, the packaging for the (seemingly japanese exclusive) SNES version was that these controllers were in fact made by ASCII. It might be the same for the two JoySticks with capcom's logo on it.

    I remember having a couple of those controllers. Electronics Boutique had a bunch of them for I recall $2.99 at the old Columbus OH City Center location in the mid 1990s. I used one of them but could never get used to how the pad felt, even while playing SFII. I gave the other one to my nephews when they lost one of their regular controls.
    Don't remember what happened to my original, since that was at least 20 years ago...

    I had two of these. I bought them specifically for Street Fighter Alpha 2, which was a very late release in the life of the SNES and still one of my favorite SNES games to this day. It's remarkable what they were able to do on that old hardware (though admittedly it did suffer from long loading times at the start of each round, likely due to the size of all the assets in the game and high res sprites etc.). Still, it was an awesome game and these controllers worked perfectly for it, especially for the super moves which required simultaneously pressing 2 or 3 buttons at the same time to pull off the level 2 and 3 supers accordingly (save for Akuma's Raging Demon, which required a quick button tab combination). I actually got used to playing regular games with this eventually after using it for SFA2 for so long and was even able to play Super Metroid among other more traditional titles with it. I seem to recall this controller being released specifically for Super SF2 for the SNES/Super Famicom and I recall seing the characters from that game on the card that it came in. It wasn't really necessary for that or any other fighter though since only Alpha 2 on the SNES had the super moves that necessitated the simultaneous 3 punch/3 kick button presses but it was still a nice setup to somewhat emulate the layout of an arcade board, and since I always preferred using a d-pad for fighters rather than a joystick, this was a perfect setup for me for my fighting games.

    I just bought one specifically for, the Road Rash games on the Genesis. As I am getting older, my thumb speed has slowed quite a bit. Trying to keep one finger on the acceleration button and moving another finger over, to punch or kick is, quite uncomfortable. I tried keeping my right hand on the buttons, this too, is uncomfortable, as it is at a bad angle and hurts the wrist and hand after a bit. This may help alot. We shall see.

    As much as I love the SF/capcom fighting series, it was always annoying that we needed 6 face buttons. The original dreamcast controller wasn't any better :( Also also taunt function is usually the 'select' button, but the dc only had 7 buttons. In other words in order to taunt on a dc/cap fighter, you had to press the start and X button simultaneously.

    Problem is it still lacks a stick. One problem I always had with dpads for fighting games is how hard it is to pull off moves that require a rotation, like for example Ryus Hadouken, when requires a quarter circle, which is much harder with a dpad. One upside to a dpad is fighters like Guile that use charge attacks. Dpads are great for a back and forth motion, but terrible for circular motions. One reason Mortal Kombat was much easier to pull off moves on the older consoles was because the moves were all single direction inputs, and not circular motions.

    The Saturn controller MK-2 is the best 6-face button controller ever made for 2D gaming. If there was a fusion between the Neo Geo CD controller (the one with the digital 8-way thumbstick) and the Saturn MK-2 controller, it would be the greatest controller ever made for 2D gaming.

    • @hybridvigga
      @hybridvigga 5 лет назад +1

      That was the one that was nearly identical to the Megadrive/Genesis 6 button pad but with shoulder buttons wasn't it? I'd been injured by then and still can't used D-Pads now (top half of my left thumb is imobile and numb, so its arcade sticks and and holding analogue pads weird so i'm using where the bottom of my thumb joins my hand to move them), but before that Megadrive 6 button pad was the unbeatable one compared to SNES or any generation that came before, so I can easily take your word for it.

  • @bebop306
    @bebop306 5 лет назад

    Using trigger buttons isn't that bad but the left triggers are always a pain to use, simply because it is awkward to do the dpad motion then press a button with the same hand.

  • @nicolangot
    @nicolangot 5 лет назад

    i personally wouldn't have been able to use that back in the day. while playing fighting games, i usually use a portion of my shirt to wrap my left thumb with while using the d-pad, so i could simply just slide my thumb through the d-inputs in doing special moves. and for me, i think that method works better using a regular controller.

    I've own this controller for 20 years now, still use it too but have NEVER used it the way you did. That really just looked uncomfortable. It's a pretty great controller I say.
