  • This week’s video will take you through the necessary steps of shooting a white subject and provide tips on how to successfully stop blown-out highlights!
    Common problems when shooting a white subject include ending up with a super dark scene because your camera is overcompensating for the whiteness, or blown-out highlights - neither are welcome here!
    Although I'm using a white (blonde I guess?!) dog as an example, these photography tips can be applied to ANY white subject and will stop the blown-out highlights you might be seeing in your current shoots.
    Working with a white dog or a white subject comes with its challenges, but with these simple steps you can achieve the desired image and overcome the difficulties you might be currently facing.

    Haha the blinky, Sony has "Zebra" haha

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Год назад +1

      Blinkers and zebras are different things so be careful. At the standard setting on zebras you’ll see them even if the data isn’t clipped (when shooting raw), so increase the numbers to around 107 to get a more accurate reading with zebras. Blinkies only show true clipped highlights so it’s a bit more “black and white” and available on all cameras so hopefully more universal for our audience 🙌

    Thanks Jess. I look at the histogram afterwards as it is a DSLR, and can deal with blown out whites. When shooting against a black background is it OK to have histogram pressed up against the left hand side or is this considered wrong?

    • @ThatPhotographySpot

      Yes, if you want a completely black background left hand peak is perfect 🙌

    Very helpful, but wouldn’t this be situation for partial or spot metering?

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Год назад +3

      Really it depends on the subject and situation, and the photographer for what they prefer. If you compose in camera then spot is next to impossible on DSLRs because the spot is usually central, where the subject might not be. There are many things to consider, so it isn’t one size fits all 😊

  • @daemon1143
    @daemon1143 Год назад +2

    Small complaint Jess, not about the content which was excellent as always, but the sound. You seem to have a sound dip at the upper mid to lower treble which, for old farts like me with industrial hearing damage, makes it a bit difficult to hear your voice clearly. I had to have subs on to catch everything in this one, and I haven't had to do that on one of your vids before. Sorry to winge, but if you could have Dan boost the upper vocal range a tad it would help us decrepit sods.

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Год назад +3

      This is absolutely correct and not a winge!! I was so close to not actually posting this video because of the audio so I’m sort of happy someone else thought it was poor - shows I’m not overthinking!
      Our main mic died a sad death the day before we filmed this one, it’s in the shop for repairs/replacement so this is actually the old decrepit one that sort makes me sound like I’m in a swimming pool underwater, or a room wrapped in bubble wrap and you’re on the other side of the wall! We’re working on getting the main mic replaced ASAP and it won’t happen again 🙏

    Jess, sometimes my display on my a7R4 shows blinkies that say I'm overexposing, but when i look at the histogram is not the case... why is that happening?

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  Год назад +1

      Do you have a contrasty picture profile set up on your camera? It could be reading the preview instead of the histograms of the RAW? Alternatively, are the blinkies you see actually zebras in real time? These are by default set up way more sensitive and need tweaking to show true blown highlights?

    • @bernardomeza6906
      @bernardomeza6906 Год назад +1

      @@ThatPhotographySpot I think i don't have any profile selected! and nope no zebras on real time. What I now have to do is to see the histogram in real time but sometimes I even have to check the picture taken because when it splits the light into RGB, one of the colors is clipped

    Sony sensors are mostly ISO invariant, so on the A7R4, you can shoot at ISO 100 or 320, underexpose tomorrow protect highlights and then brighten the image in post. There is almost no noise penalty for doing so now, as long as you shoot raw and don’t take it to the extreme and underexpose too much. 🎉
