when i moved into my own apartment, this was the HARDEST thing to figure out!!! stuff is just not made for one meal or portion!! definitely a learning curve
One tip I have is similar to you having the frozen dishes on hand. When I make a sauce for pasta or rice, I usually try to split it in 3, one for dinner, one for the next day and the third portion I freeze. Like that if I don't feel like cooking one evening, I can just make some pasta and unfreeze the sauce in a pot and have fresh dinner in like 15 minutes.
A lil hack I do: when I buy chicken breast, I put them in separate baggies which makes thawing time a lot faster! Also, big fan of store brand foods when I can :) !!
I work at Trader Joe’s and I will say, the pricing is the best I’ve seen at most grocery stores. I haven’t shopped at Whole Foods I’m a minute… I feel like the pricing increased soooo much! But not bad for a party of one! (I’m a party of two and my boy is like a garbage man lol so I never waste food, I loveeee it)
the freezer for sure.. I freeze chopped onion, garlic- any veg for cooking honestly.. and heavy cream/other milk products for cooking frozen in ice cube trays… Nothing can go bad in my house anymore😎 Well except the fresh greens
Man, I LOVE the rain. We could definitely use it here in New Mexico seeing as how we currently have seven wildfires burning. You are such a well planned out person!! I love how you share how you tackle everyday tasks such as grocery shopping! I hope you passed your test.
I did pass thank goodness! Thinking of you guys in New Mexico right now! fires are so devastating and scary when it's so close to home. I still think about 2020's fire season in Oregon often. Hang in there & I try to send some rain your way!
With meals I make from scratch I make at least 1 extra portion to throw in the freezer for later that week/next week. Means when I’m busy I have something really quick. I basically freeze anything!!
I’d love for someone to do a comparison between Aldi and Trader Joe’s because IMO, I find Trader Joe’s to be pricey! Idk if it’s because of specialty items or what, but for me, it’s a “treat yourself” grocery store.
Aldi isn't in a lot of states. We don't have them here in Colorado and I know they're not in Oregon either. If there were I'd definitely shop there more than TJs, but TJs is the best option for me here besides Walmart.
Thanks for all the meal inspiration. This was a great video. You can just take the number of slices of bread you need out of the freeze, about 30-60 Minutes before you want to eat it, and it will defrost really fast and tastes almost as good as fresh bread.
Great video! Hack: my husband is Japanese and a chef. We eat A LOT of rice! Before I met him, I used to buy the TJ frozen rice, too and I know making rice for one seems like a pain. BUT. You can make a big batch for pennies, freeze them in individual portions, then micro for 3 minutes. Given how much you like stir frys & Indian food, I recommend that method. You wind up saving time AND money. And the Saffron Road frozen meals are really tasty (butter chicken is my fav). The chicken enchiladas poblano is also yum!
My favorite thing to make is pulled pork in the crock pot. 2ish pounds of pork plus a can pf your favorite soda. Cool on low for 8 hours. Shred and add your favorite bareheaded sauce. Freeze whatever you won’t eat in the next few days. So good and so easy!!
This was so inspiring. I've lived alone for awhile and this is my biggest challenge. I always fall back on the same 3 things so this was nice. thank you!
Omggg we watched this video in my career empowerment class!!! My teacher was impressed on how well you manage you money 💗💗💗I think I might start watching your videos more often
We family of 5 Frozen vegetables, I make soups and freeze. Make a meal and leftovers for lunch. Pop fresh herbs in jar and put a bag over them t0 create a green house in the fridge, they last for weeks. I buy frozen fruits, ginger, garlic, onions. I make huge batch of pasta sauce, jar will last week in the fridge and rest I freeze in portions for quick dinners. I make bread weekly with my sourdough starter so I freeze rolls, bread and tortillas I make pizza dough freeze, just defrost in fridge overnight, and used as normal. My kids love energy balls so I make batches and store in freezer so they can take to school ( nutfree as in UK, England we aren't allowed nuts in school ). I have staples too in my cupboard to make quick and easy meals too. I tend to cook and make freeze single meals for my eldest so she can have after college or work. Enjoy your week and meals. I think u set an amazing example for youngsters 😍
Cooking videos are all the rage now - show us your talent! Cooking hacks: 1) Always pre-prep your ingredients be it chopping vegetables, mixing sauces and spice mixes 2) Gourmet burgers patties are super easy it make, store and reheat on a pan with other ingredients when needed
my backup meal is fried or baked tofu! sprouted tofu is only $1-2 at TJ’s or target, the ingredients for the sauce last a long time, and i don’t mind meal repeating, so it lasts me 2-4 meals every time. highly highly recommend!
Something I do is that I eat mostly the same thing everyday, so meal prep is the best for me because I can eat the same breakfast, lunch and dinner and nit got bored. That saves a lot of time of my busy schedule. Just on weekends I like to treat myself for some takeout
I LOVE cooking/shopping for just myself... I find it easy, because i eat very basic stuff (I never use recipes to cook, apart from the recipes on the back of meal base packets) .. BUT the freezer is my best friend, i freeze EVERYTHING - leftovers/3 separate extra serving of spaghetti, taco mince/stir fry etc, bread/bread rolls, shredded cheese, deli meat AND i love to always have frozen vegetables (and frozen fries 🤫) on hand, always! and i agree having packet rice or frozen dinners/pizza once a week is the way to go when cooking for one person👌.... Yes, groceries are expensive but food is the cheaper side of groceries - toiletries and other household things make up most of my groceries costs.
Yes the freezer is AMAZING. Household good are rough and for me paying utilities as a single person is extra annoying! Thanks for sharing all your ideas...you're inspiring me to get back on my frozen tots game hehe
I freeze my bread as well...My mum always does this, so the bread doesn't go bad 👍🏼🍞 I try to buy groceries for many more dishes, too. It saves you a loooot of time and energy - cook it one time, enjoy it two times 😌 I need to get better in preparing little snack foods, so when I've a full day of Uni I can have something more nutritious in between classes🙈🙊
It's so smart! And yes prepping snack ahead of time is the best...buying snacks when you're out and about always adds up but if you're hungry what are you going to do??
I’m not sure I can video in a store. I look for cheap things to eat. Frozen vegetables and cheap instant rice dishes. I get cheap lunch meat and eat sandwiches. I’m a meat eater to but like u I try saving money. My favorite dish is kipper-snack canned fish on pancakes covered with peanut butter with syrup to dip each bite in. I think my grandpa learned about fish on pancakes from his Indian friend back when he was young. They used to catch trout then make pancakes for the trout. I love it.
I have a rice cooker because I am 1/3 Asian it taste better. I usually cook for every two days and leave some food in the refrigerator. I love Spaghetti, too and Udon noodles. The noodles that a while to cook because you have to cook the pork to make the broth. Takes 3 hours to get good flavor in the broth but so worth it
Try to take out the bread from the fridge in the night before you sleep but it in plastic bag with some tissues to observe the moist from it , and when you weak up it already soft for you
Great video, you really make the most of what you buy. I make a meal that will fedd 4 and then freeze the other 3 portions so htat I have meals frozen that can be defrosted during the day and then reheated at night.
Absolutely love this video. As someone who has to shop for food for 1 person I know how difficult it can be. However especially vegetables wont always last as long as yours here in the Netherlands. My go to recipes are indian curry’s, wraps or taco salad (basically everything that goes into a taco but not in a taco but on lettuce. Just add tortillas for crunch) 🤭
I make pizza on french bread or english muffins with leftover spaghetti sauce. I only use half the french bread for a pizza and then I make a garlic bread with the other half when I have spaghetti or fettecuine alfredo. The english muffins also double as a way to make breakfast sandwiches. I will also use the same spaghetti sauce and put chicken with it and the spaghetti noodles it is great because I use the whole can of spaghetti sauce between those three meals. I buy shelf stable milk so that I do not have to go to the grocery store for just milk. I also buy two kinds of yogurt when I buy it one flavored one not so that I can mix the unflavored in with the flavored this way I do not have as much sugar in one serving of yogurt. When I buy lunch meat I buy the bigger package unless the smaller packages are on sale and then I freeze what I do not use. When I buy tortillas I use them for tacos and breakfast burritios they can also be used instead of bread to make wraps. Lastly I bought an ice cream maker attachment for my mixer that way I never have to buy my own ice cream. I know of a diary with a store next to it and they sell me whipping cream by the case in an 8 oz container perfect for a batch of ice cream. I can also use it to make alfredo sauce and my own butter.
Hey Ki, All those recipes look so good I added them to my "Eat" board. Thank you so much. Good on you for sharing tips and tricks with people, esp. if they are on their own. Ugh thats so frustrating that they are doing that because there are so many vegetarians who rely on the options they sell there! You should try the sweet potato tacos & Pinterest has so many good vegetarian options too :)
Queeeeeeen......We would easily jam to Indian food if we end up meeting sometime. Indian food is just amazing. For the question of the day, I have a meal plan because I live on campus and of in case I end up going out then I try getting dish that I like but is also cheaper or sometimes I keep a budget on how much I can spend on eating outside. I generally go to an Indian grocery store here in Omaha which is super cheap go to grocery shopping in case I miss the Indian food way too much.
I go grocery shopping every weekend. I email myself the shopping list. Why do prefer writing your list instead emailing to yourself? How often do you go grocery shopping?
As a european, I have to say I was outraged by the prices of food in the US (especially fresh produce. I once purchased 2 pounds of “ normal” apples for about 6$ in a star market in Boston in 2019. Obviously I forgot that 1 Pound isn‘t even 500 grams). Everything you just bought would have costed about 40€ (because of the cashews) in Germany and way less in Spain or Italy. No wonder people with low income have to depend on junk food.
This is actually a more recent change. Food prices have increased dramatically over 2021 (according to family in Oregon), and we’re only seeing this increase start in Europe (U.K. for example) the past few months.
There’s plenty of good Indian food here in England, but I’d rather have Mexican food. I grew up in Phoenix and now I miss having authentic Mexican food.
I'm English and American (Portland) but I live in France so hearing someone else say yumbowls and know what they actually are is so strange to me ahaha. Like ik its a restaurant but I haven't heard smn say it in sooo long!
TV dinners - watch the salt levels. I'm in New Zealand and they're really high in sodium which isn't great, but if you're aware of that and read labels you're all good. It's kinda sad because they're so popular with old people here and they're high sodium not great for heart issues!
So true! I don't eat tv dinners that are from those generic popular brands that are really not good for you...I mainly stick to the Indian ones because the ingredients are good and they freeze well!
haha I feel...seeing food online always makes me hungry! Sometimes I do, but I look at the prices of everything I buy when I shop so it's usually pretty expected!
when i moved into my own apartment, this was the HARDEST thing to figure out!!! stuff is just not made for one meal or portion!! definitely a learning curve
Half my food keeps on going bad too, I just don't eat in enough for it to be worth cooking at home 😪

Are you enjoying the gas prices hike? What does it cost over where you are to fill up your tank? Is it overcast a lot in Oregon?
oh boy I'm not....my wallet hurts. It comes me like $68 to fill up and it used to cost me $36..and yep more rain is on the way here.

If you refrigerate bread, like that sourdough bread, it will last weeks! it doesn’t go bad
I’ve started doing that too! Such a good idea :)
Like ik its a restaurant but I haven't heard smn say it in sooo long!
hahaha I always forget it's not a thing everywhere!! Such a yummy comfort food.
What's the average time does it take for you to make a video? Do you script out what you're going to say or whatever comes to mind?
I just say whatever and it really depends on the video :)
This is random, but do you own the hydro flask lunch tote? If you do, do you recommend it?? 💗💗
Yes I do! I use it for when I have clinical at the hospital and I love it! It's the perfect size for me!
@@KiaraMadisen brb running to buy it then 🏃🏽♀️🏃🏽♀️
Do you know exactly what you eat every day before the week or whatever you feel like eating that day?
I usually plan it out so I know what I am having most days, but sometimes I go rouge ;)
Try the chicken tangri masala .... its awesome
That sounds so delish 😍
thank you for doing this!
Thanks for watching!
When I do grocery shopping, I always have a healthy dish in mind but too lazy to make it and ended up eating not so healthy food.
Maybe you have to find a dish that's borderline healthy and make that!

You should start a RUclips cooking channel!!!
I always feel hungry when you add food to your videos. Stop it already. LOL! Do you spend more money than expected when you go shopping?
haha I feel...seeing food online always makes me hungry! Sometimes I do, but I look at the prices of everything I buy when I shop so it's usually pretty expected!
