Magnetizing Sector Mechanicus

- In this video I'm going to magnetize various parts from the Games Workshop Sector Mechanicus scenery range. If you have any questions please leave a comment.
As pointed out by Madness by Design on another video, please be careful with the magnets and glue as depending on the glue tiny droplets might become airborne and get into your eyes.
If you store your scenery in colder places I recommend not using superglue as this may freeze and break meaning the magnets will no longer be stuck in place inside your piece. Хобби

Thanks for sharing!
I wish to suggest for anyone following this video. for the Silo and Dome magnets, the join lines were the quarter sections glue together is probably the easier marker to align your magnets with.
Still the best guide for this i could find. well done
Agreed!
This is epic. Definitely subbed
Thank you very much for this video. It get's even more valuable with new Kill Team killzone sector mechanicus set!
Thank you for your comment. I'm going to try and make a new video when the new stuff comes out but it might be a while.
Scumb4g Kustoms meanwhile it would be superb if you could make a video of final painted sector mechanicus ;)
Finished? I haven't even scratched the surface yet. Working on 4 of these guys atm this picture is taken after the an enamel wash annd before more weathering:

Awesome content!👍🏽👌
Agh, I wish I'd thought of these ideas a year-ish ago, before I assembled the pieces. I've magnetised a bit of my set, but using smaller magnets glued into holes drilled into parts of the caps. This has some far superior ways to handle it.
I'm a bit surprised you use superglue for the plastic itself though, as plastic glue (styrene-based, as GW plastics are) will give a chemical bond that's far superior.
I initially wanted to use that method as well and even glued a set shut so had to re-open it.
My use of superglue has to do with the way that I find it far easier to handle, I dislike the brush pots plastic glue sometimes comes in and hate the clogging that happens with the needle pots. My superglue is also a gel glue so easier to control and I haven't had any issues with it coming off (unless I wanted it to in which case it was a win as well)
I’d like to point this out for the Dome/Silo magnetizing. You have to have four magnates on the silo for the three magnates on the dome to have three points of contact for any position.
Genius.
Thank you!
Can you link to your circle cutter? I have been looking for one but can’t find a good one.
I bought mine here in Japan, so I'm not sure if it's available where you're at. Here's a link for the same one on an Australian website. www.rtmediasolutions.com.au/product/circle-cutter/
There are other ones available though, this one is not too good for smaller circles.
Could you add a list of all magnet sizes you needed in the description?
laam999 I'll try to make a list once I get back from my holiday.
Question: How thick is the plasticard that has been used ? And if so would you use the same, thicker or thinner if you need to build a new set?
ouch, that's a good one, don't think I remember really maybe .25mm if that makes sense. basically I don't like to use the flimsy stuff so it needs to be sturdy but I wouldn't go for thicker as that is just making it harder to cut especially in a circle.
I would change the glue I used though as I keep my scenery in a place that gets very cold during the winter and this gives issues with the superglue and it might come apart, so if you store your scenery in a cold place go for plastic glue instead.
@@scumb4g.kustoms For what it is worth - you can do both. Superglue for the initial bond, then run some Tamiya Extra Thin down the seam and it will find its way in and solidify the piece.
Any plans to do a tutorial on magnetising the walkway sections of the kits?
I'm currently faffing about with using 3x2mm round magnets on the posts of the connector pieces (and in the corresponding holes on the undersides of the walkway panels). Column pieces seem to hold together pretty well by friction and weight, and the balustrade sections by friction alone.
Hi, I'm not sure if this is worth it atm as it seems that they hold together by friction pretty well.
@@scumb4g.kustoms What about the plasma conduits. If you want them to stay at ground level then there is no problem, but what if you want to send them upwards along the walkways?
@@fernandorivera4719, good question haven't thought about that yet, but they seem to fit under the walkways perfectly.
You could add a little magnet in the walkway, but I think you'd just be using way too many magnets for every possible option.
@@scumb4g.kustoms Nah M8, I already saw your pipelines video: pure genius.
The real question now is: the new Sector Imperialis, is it possible to magnetize? They don't seem to have wide areas to stick magnets such as the pipelines.
@@fernandorivera4719, that's the stuff I'm working on, but there are some time consuming tricky bits, which is why it's taking me ages to think about the best way as I don't want the video to be too messy and wishing I did things differently afterwards.
Perhaps have you some kind of magnets list you used?
I got most of them from Ebay, if you just type in the dimensions with magnet behind it I'm sure they will pop up.
I would suggest N52 strength magnets (the ones used in this video look weaker than I'd use) and also, get Diametrically Magnetized ones. They attract from BOTH sides and also cancel out rotation, so none of your parts will repel others and you'll have more assembly options.
are you using N35 magnets? or N52? thanks
I always try to go for N52
Scumb4g Kustoms thanks!
do you realize that for plastic-on-plastic joints any styrene glue works a lot better than superglue, right? :-)
I do, but for making a video this worked a lot quicker. It's also a lot more forgiving if you mess up, but yeah don't store them in cold places :p
Scumb4g Kustoms fair enough 👍
This is metal to plastic not plastic to plastic,
I'm curious, have you ever had any trouble with electronics playing with this terrain?
I've got a load of sector mechanicus terrain too and I was looking to magnetize some of it, but the amount of magnets that'll end up on the table makes we worry for my phone or keys if I ever put them down next to my plasma pipes.
Great video!
However, it drove me crazy everytime you said "times" when it should have been "by". 15 by 2. Not 15 times 2.
I'll try to remember for my next video, thanks for letting me know!
