Sometimes they don't know what's good for them. Way to show your husband! ✊🏻 My boyfriend finds it "disturbing"; I just make it for myself as a treat. ❤
This is similar to a recipe I've been using for over 30 years that I found in an old cookbook from Colonial Williamsburg. The only difference is that I add orange zest and Grand Mariner. It's a tradition every Christmas and Thanksgiving. I double the recipe on Thanksgiving and freeze the rest for Christmas. One less thing to make so I can relax.
Yum! Another easy and delicious recipe. Thanks John! I just love your charismatic personality as you explain each step, which inspires me to actual cook 👏🏽
One thing that's always impressed me - and sends chills down my spine - are John's knife skills. He's always looking at the camera while he chops. Next level.
I made this for Thanksgiving. I followed the recipe exactly using the baked potato method. Fantastic and the star side dish. The texture was smooth and not runny or too thick. The topping was amazing. Thanks so much for making this recipe available.
Hi John, I found your channel about two months ago or so when I wanted a recipe for peanut butter oatmeal cookies. I made your recipe and they were quite delicious and easy to make. Ever since then I’ve looked through your channel and favored many recipes of years that I would love to try including this one, the peanut butter, chocolate chip cookies, and The pumpkin cookies. I can’t wait to try them all. As a blind person, it’s very important when I look for RUclips recipes that they are verbal and descriptive and you do such a great job. Keep up the great work and I wish you and yours a very happy holiday season.
Being from the Caribbean this is not a signature dish for us but I’m so willing to try your recipe for the experience!!! Your ingredients are easily accessible to me and your method super easy. I’m looking forward !!
I love your videos and recipes. I watched your deviled eggs video for friends giving and now preparing for family dinner tomorrow. You make it easy to follow along and breakdown steps/tips for beginners!
I make a very similar recipe each holiday. I bake the sweet potatoes and use an electric mixer. This year I'm going to try it like you did, using a masher and mix by hand. Looks delicious.
Yessss🎉 I found recent videos...Days not years. John you're Awesome and your humor has made me smile during some really tough times. ❤ Continue to be blessed
Try roasting the sweet potatoes in the oven no peeling them is needed and the result is game changer they won’t get watery and the sweetness comes out like almost jam, I tried boiling them before that was ok but since I ‘been roasting them for years now never went back
Ok, I typically boil mine for my recipe that’s very similar to this. I may need to roast them! Do you oil them down at all? Do you wrap them individually? How long do you roast them?
@@bloggerbriii no oiling necessary and the baking time depends on the size of the sweet potatoes and also every oven is different I bake mine for ab 45 min less or more and always put more potatoes than the recipe because they will shrink a little
Perfect timing, thank you John! I was wondering what to make for a vegetarian pot luck get together and I will make this now. Looks delicious! Not sure you have this recipe in your first cookbook which I bought, will check later! John looking more handsome with the short haircut!
Happy Thanksgiving Preppy Kitchen! I made this today for our meal and it was a hit! Everyone said it was the best version of sweet potato casserole we’ve ever had! Thanks for this excellent recipe ☺️
Made this for Thanksgiving with baked the sweet potatoes. I didn't add the white sugar to the potatoes so it wasnt quite as sweet. It was the hit of the dinner. I will make this everytime!!!!
NGL, John, but your recipe from a year or two ago is far superior and easier. The roasting of the sweet potatoes vs. boiling makes a huge difference in flavor and texture.
@@MegaLivlivliv the roasting of the potatoes is just part of the difference. The whole dish is more straightforward and ingredient selection leads to an overall better dish.
@@actualreplyguy Eh, same ingredients plus marshmallow. The real difference -- other than roasting -- is incorporating some of the pecans and all of the cinnamon into the mixture instead of on top, and using 1/4 more sugar. IMO it's too sweet with the extra sugar and marshmallows and marshmallow. This version is sweetened, but not overly sweet while still allowing the sweet potato flavor to come through and enhance the dish with notes beyond the sweetness. Different strokes. Those with a sweet tooth would almost certainly prefer the previous version a bit more.
I agree @actualreplyguy! I lost my recipe card from that recipe and came here looking for it again and found this video. I was like.... NOPE! Not the one he did originally. I have not tried this recipe however I know for a fact my entire family LOVES the original recipe of his so I will go find it now! HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!
Hi John! I keep seeing your beautiful garden with all those delicious herbs! Can you do a video/tour of your garden? Maybe tips on how to grow a healthy garden as well?? I have trouble with growing mine! 😭
Another alternative for cooking the sweet potatoes is microwaving - you won't get the same slightly-caramelized result as you would with baking them in the oven, but you won't have the concern of overboiling and having water-logged potatoes, either. Love your channel, John!!
Thank you! I was searching for a baked pear recipe, but I didn’t see one by you. Could you do one in the future? Thank you and for the UK people, sweet potato casserole here in America is a side dish at Thanksgiving. Sweet and all. 😊
I make a pear and cranberry (or blackberry) crisp: delicious. Same method as apple or any fruit crisp. Sometimes I just bake them in a casserole dish with a little water or wine, cinnamon and usually a few raisins or cranberries. You could add nuts too.
We have been doing this recipe (essentially) for almost 20 years. (Ruth Cris steakhouse copycat). I've never tried roasting the potatoes before but will for this Thanksgiving. We do add 1/4 - 1/2 chopped (depending on who's doing the mixing that year) roasted pecans in the sweet potato filling which our whole family loves! And we also do the crumble of course.
My Mom this in the 70s. I grew up with it. My kids grew up with it. If I don’t bring it there will be trouble. We call it sweet potato pie. That’s what it was called when handed down to my Mom.
I’m an overachiever. I make three different vanilla variations. 1. Using vanilla 2. Using bourbon 3. Using rum I make both a bourbon and a rum cake so I like the “special” vanilla for those. I also make a fourth with coffee and cacao beans. Lovely in brownies or coffee.
Well my mistake. Because we in Australia don’t eat pumpkin or sweet potato as a dessert, I made this and served it up with my piece of chicken! Lol. Yes, far too sweet. I realise now, this is a dessert! Probably warm smothered in double cream, will be really nice. Sorry John. Always love your recipes!
This is my favorite dish! I will heat a second serving in the microwave with marshmallows for dessert!! I always bake my sweet potatoes, less work! (I also put marshmallows on half of the casserole, since people tend to like one or the other!)
Looks delicious! Also, your dedication to wearing flannel since the start of your channel brings a smile to my face, I love it! 😁
Great video. I love the comments section where viewers offer their own suggestions for additives.
I made this for Thanksgiving against my husbands wishes. It was great. Everyone loved it including the husband. Keep em coming.

Colonial Williamsburg!!! Go neighbor 🥰
I live here in the burg!
I wish I still lived there! I'm a Midwest gal now lol
Sounds awesome. How much Grand Mariner? Thanks kindly.
@ I googled the recipe and it calls for 1 ounce of grand marnier for 3 pounds of sweet potatoes
I definitely would love to see videos about how to properly chop/prep 😄 I can’t wait to make this casserole for my family!
Thanks

Baked in the air fryer and there was a crunch to the crumble that was amazing !
I love sweet potato casserole the best my family eats it up

I made this for Thanksgiving. It is sooo good ❤ My husband and I love this dish! So easy to make ❤
Thank you for a delicious recipe I'll be making this Holiday season and well beyond!!
For my topping I use toasted coconut and Praline Pecans chopped and chopped pretzels, the textures and flavors are just amazing.
My mom makes this with rum every year at Thanksgiving. It’s SO good!

Toasted pecans and brown butter are worth the extra effort. You can taste the mixture before adding eggs. I bake mine in individual ramekins.
Delicious casserole. Made it the first time in my life and had already a pre thanksgiving dinner.
Love everything you do! It's classier tasting food made easy! I can't wait for the next book!

My favorite part of thanksgiving is this dish! I love it with raisins mixed in but my family does not. We like it with marshmallows on top!
Try orange zest in your sweet potatoes, and a splash of juice. And pecans and brown sugar is the superior sweet potato topping!
Another delicious 😋😋😋 recipe, which I'm going to try!!!
Thanks so much for this video. Made this and brought it to a Friendsgiving and it was a hit! Subscribed.
I just made for our Thanksgiving dinner thank you very much great directions. Looking forward to eating it.

I know of this cookbook by Amelia Simmons, Townsends uses it a lot. I love, love, love sweet potatoes especially sweet potato casserole.
So glad to see someone else top off the potatoes with candied pecans. I was beginning to think it was just me.
I make a mix of pecans, shredded coconut, butter and brown sugar on my Bourbon Sweet Potatoes!
I enjoy your cooking videos very much! would love to see pumpkin empanadas (empanadas de calabaza) pretty please.
My son in law makes this for Thanksgiving and I save my portion for dessert. 😉
I bake them first, and add bourbon & black pepper. Sometimes rosemary as well, all of which contrast nicely with pecans or walnuts and sugar
I steam my sweet potatoes whole 🥔 they don't get waterlogged and the skins slip off easily. I love the pecan topping!
