Stevie was, in my opinion, simply the greatest guitar player ever. His combination of technical virtuosity, emotion, tone and showmanship was awe-inspiring. He also played a guitar that the vast majority of guitarists wouldn't be able to: having ridiculously heavy strings and high action. He overcame a long-standing and deep addiction to cocaine and alcohol, then lived the last four years of his life clean, sober and happy before being killed in a helicopter crash in 1990. He's extra special and beloved here in Texas. He was born and raised in Dallas, and grew his playing chops there and in the Austin club scene. My favorite part about Stevie, however, is that he was a kind and humble man. Thanks for posting this reaction.
He has phrasing that just goes on forever in recognizable blues patterns that feel so right. He doesn’t ever go into weird technical speed or get caught moving faster than his brain. He doesn’t trip over notes or get lost. He seems to always know where he is going. So many guitarists have a few choice phrases that they like to use and don’t stray from that very much. It’s like Stevie has unlimited knowledge of every blues phrase ever and just reaches into a bag and pulls them out in whatever order, and it sounds amazing.
You say he played a guitar with heavy strings and high action like he couldn't have used another guitar or bought lighter strings and lowered the action. That is how he liked it. That's how he set it up..
I was front row center in Alpine Valley that fateful night. I had just witnessed an Amazing concert. After a lengthy exit from the parking lot I got up the road a few miles when the local radio station I was listening to broke into the middle of a song - it got quiet for a moment then the DJ said I have some tragic news- it’s being reported that the helicopter carrying Stevie ray Vaughan has just crashed into a hillside killing everyone on board-- I’ll never forget those words. I pulled over to the side of the road and cried . The trip home was filled with disbelief, pain , sorrow and even mad at the world . I couldn’t believe that this man who stood before me a half hour earlier playing his heart and soul out had parished . My heart broke that night and it still breaks when I think about it. RIP Stevie the world moans for your loss 🙏❤️
I've seen this performance perhaps 1000's of times and it still moves me to tears. Great video guys, really enjoyed seeing you witness the genius of SRV. 🙏🏼
@@tiffanypalmer9918 I don’t think it’s fair to say anyone is the best guitarist ever. It’s very difficult to compare guitarists across multiple genres. For example, there are chicken picking country players that are absolutely phenomenal that a hard rock guy probably never heard of or wouldn’t give a second thought to. It would be very hard to compare a guy like EVH to SRV as well, their styles are so different.
This is my favorite RUclips video of all time. I’ve literally watched/listened to it close to a thousand times. Part of my mesmerization is because Stevie Ray is imo the greatest guitarist of all time but also because He and I are both proud products of Oak Cliff, Texas!
I was 21 when he was killed. I had been listening to his albums for 5 years. Being told he died was a kick in the gut. He had come so far, got clean, and then was just gone. The world lost greatness that day.
I love your comment. It speaks to the struggles and love and life of a great person and how no matter what good or bad befalls them it can be gone tomorrow. SRV is my personal favorite. My hero and a man I can say made me feel what he was conveying . 😢 There will never be another like him so we must keep his music alive. Could you imagine never hearing his voice ,heart, emotion, and talent through his guitar?
Same. I was 21 too in 1990. I had a cassette from high school in the 80s but didn’t listen too deeply just aware of Texas flood, Pride and Joy, Little Wing, etc, so when he was killed I was like WTF that guitar player from Texas Flood. - Then I deep dived into his music … and DAMN…
We're the same age bro. I was home with a broken leg cuz' of a head on car wreck that I was a passenger in. My buddy was in the hospital and didn't come out OK. It absolutely fkn crushed me for both to happen within 3 weeks. I started diggin' him when I was around 14 or 15 too. Got to see him twice. A chick asked me to go to a time share with her on South Padre Island in Texas in 93' and the main reason I went was to be in Texas where he was from and go to his grave site. It was 1500 miles but damn right I was goin'. I don't think I go more than 2/3 days without listening to him or thinking about him. Anyway,,,,,I liked your comment. Peace !!
I saw this live in ‘87. He had that same shirt on. It was a special time I knew it. I was so fortunate to have seen him live. One of my greatest memories!!!!
I love watching somebody who sees Stevie Ray Vaughan for the first time! He brings out pure emotion in every human being, who watches him he was a great, and I am so glad that I was a young guy and a guitar player when I first saw him and learned from watching him, now I am an old man who played the blues for many yearsinspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many others, including BB, King, Muddy Waters the list is endless, technically, Stevie Ray Vaughan was probably among the best ever
I love your reaction to Stevie Ray! You truly captured him with the words you used to describe him. He was very special to us Texans and it warms my heart everytime I see someone captivated by him for the very first time. If you want to be wowed again, check out his performance with : Jeff Healey and Stevie Ray Vaughan " Look at Little Sister ". Jeff Healey was blind, but he could sort of hold his own with Stevie Ray in that performance. It will amaze you and make you glad that you got to witness such a performance in this lifetime. 👏 👌
Great reaction. I believe Stevie was born to play guitar, and could not have been anything else. The Blues was inside him just waiting to come out. As you learn more about him, you'll grow to love him as we all do here in Stevie Ray Vaughan land. That's where all we fans live. For your own sake, explore all his music in the live version. Maybe with a few exceptions. Stevie's strength, energy and stamina is hardly to be believed. He had large strong hands and as I've learned, a heart of gold. RIP. King SRV. 🎸👽❤️💔💙. ☮️
I remember seeing SRV for the first time on Public Service TV as a young teenager. I had never heard or seen anything like it. I was mesmerized, and instantly inspired to play guitar.
Stevie Ray makes people who don't play the guitar want to learn how to play it, and people who do play the guitar want to give it up because they know they'll never be that good.
Yeah, the crazy thing is that it includes people like Eric Clapton, who was a bit obsessed with SRV when he first heard him in his car. He said he was afraid to go on stage with him because he didn't think he could hang.
Stevie Ray was the most amazing guitarist ever. And you nailed it, he was a passionate artist. The man never learned how to read or write music. He played from the heart. Check out "Lenny" an instrumental piece he wrote for the love of his life. The passion he plays with live is breaking. I Texas Flood there is something like 13 time changes, amazing technical piece, again written in his own musical language. His sound and speed alone doesn't display his overall skill and talent
Many of your audience know exactly what you were trying to convey ... Was performing all about the awards, the 'fame and fortune' for Stevie Ray .. or .. was it all about the love he had for the guitar and arts. EVERY subscriber that grew up with and knew him personally and/or went to school with Stevie will always say it was the latter. There have been many so-called singers that have come & gone .. disappearing into obscurity because winning awards and maintaining relevance was more important than just creating good music. Off the top of my head, Stevie Ray and Neil Diamond are two performers that did not care about the awards. Not that both artists wouldn't mind the recognition, but it was just the love of music that made each take the paths God had set forth in front of them. In his 50+ year career as a singer/songwriter/performer, Neil Diamond had won a couple Grammy's, Best/Favorite Male Artist, Icon/Lifetime Achievement, Top-Grossing Touring artist, Hollywood Walk of Fame awards and been inducted into the RRHofFame/ Songwriters Hall of Fame overtime. He had ONLY one No 1 album .. his #Home Before Dark album in 2008 {I believe it was} and had his share of TV/magazine spotlights and interviews. However, he wasn't plastered all over the damn place a person looked. He maintained a fairly private life and had to retire publicly due to a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease in January 2018. In their short 7 year career as a group, SRV & Double Trouble had already earned a couple awards for their #Texas Flood album debut and Favorite/Best Blues guitarist {I believe}. Had Stevie Ray Vaughan lived .. He was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 1990 after wrapping up a 2-day blues jam with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and big brother Jimmie Vaughan at the Alpine Music and Ski Resort in Wisconsin. SRV was only 35 .. More than likely, Stevie would still be creating great music, selling out venues and blowing people's minds with his master guitar playing today regardless of how many more awards he had won or not. RIP Stevie Ray "FOREVER 35"
Saw him in 1989 live in Texas. Still one of the best concerts Ive ever been to. He was just untouchable live. There has never been anyone since like SRV. Much like Jimi Hendrix, he has ascended to legendary status for a reason.
I've been a Stevie fan for over three decades now and I'm super grateful for your reaction. Grateful on more than a few levels. Keep loving life you two. Not sure if Christmas is something you celebrate but the season is upon so all the best to you two, your families and your loved ones. Merry Christmas.
It is so great his music lives on in recordings but it is so great in video. I saw him live in 1988 and it was life changing. Loved the reactions. So great to see people still blow away by his music. If you have not checked out more trust me you will never be disappointed. Peace and love. RIP Stevie.
So heartwarming to see Stevie amazing people and gaining new fans nearly 35 years after he left us. We're so lucky to have had him and to be able to witness his genius by seeing these vids and playing his music.
Long ago, when I was young, I started to play bass. I looked to all forms of music to learn styles and develop chops. When a friend introduced me to blues and SRV, I was blown away. His song Lenny, which he wrote for his wife, brought tears to my eyes, and still does decades later. The emotion SRV puts into his music is breathtaking. Texas Flood isn't an original, it was first done by Larry Davis in 1958, but this performance still shows how much SRV c an put into a song with bis playing.
It's not just a saying "one in billion"; Stevie truly was only one in perhaps a billion people who could do what he did at the level he did it. He has no real contemporary on his level. Not then and not now 30 years since his early death. R.I.P. SRV, so glad I got to see you in person at Antone's in Austin before then end.
You got it right, Stevie was about the music, not the money. He was entirely self-taught from the age of 8 or 9 when he first picked up a guitar. He listened to blues, early rock 'n'roll, and idolized Jimmy Hendrix. Started playing in clubs and local bands in his young teen years, dropped out of high school and moved to Austin from Dallas TX to pursue his dream of being a musician, barely scraping by playing gigs at local clubs, joining various bands, finally becoming the front man in his own band Double Trouble. Gained a local following then got a manager who helped them branch out nationally and internationally. He was noticed by top tier musicians & played with several, but declined a world tour with David Bowie to stay with his own music & his own band. Worked hard, kicked a severe addiction to alcohol & drugs, released a few albums, and became a nationally respected guitar great, admired by the legends he worshipped as a kid. He'd finally attained his dreams, personally and professionally, and was reaching stardom when he was suddenly killed in a helicopter crash in 1990, at age 35. We lost an immense talent & a beautiful human that night but his legend lives on! So glad you discovered the GOAT!
The greatest of all time ! I'd like to suggest life without you capitol theater NJ 1985 and SRV with special guest Johnny Copland. Do the research on each .
LOVE IT!!! But then what's not to love about the heart & soul he put into every note he played or lyric he sang? PLZ CHECK OUT HIS TESTIMONY TO JESUS WHEN HE DOES "LIFE WITHOUT YOU" RIGHT AFTER HE GOT CLEAN???!!❤❤❤❤❤
Check out live Stevie Ray Vaughan. 3RD STONE FROM THE SUN. THERE'S A MINDER! YA'LL GOT YOUR WARMIN'. LIVE AT EL MACAMBO OT THE FESTIVAL. BOTH ARE GOOD. ❤❤❤❤
I’m an Austinite and I first saw Stevie in 1977 when he was with Paul Ray and The Cobras. Needless to say, I was at Antone’s to see him. It was a great time with all the blues artists Clifford always had there at his club. Memories…
There is a lot to say about Stevie. So much in fact that the little details never end. I'm at the age that I got to see him live in Houston and Austin growing up in Texas. He was just a magical live as he appears on video. He did say a couple things that really stuck with me over the years. One, this was just another Saturday night for him and at his level THIS is NORMAL... Not like anyone else can match it... The other thing is the man couldn't read music... Add those things to the fact that he was a nice humble guy who beat a massive drug and alcohol problem and was still a humble human being... What more can you ask for from a human being?
That's some Texas Blues Y'all. Song written by Mr Larry Davis in 1958 and replayed by one of the greatest Texas Blues Guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan from Oak Cliff, Texas. Enjoy, because this is as good as it gets... Randy from Mesquite, TX. Merry Christmas!!!!!
i knew stevie. i grew up in austin. he was humble person. really nice guy. i was lucky enough to be around him now & then. he lived to play the guitar. he was genius player. hasn't been a player anywhere in the world that even comes close to stevie since his passing. RIP
I grew up in San Antonio but Austin's 6th St. was the place for live music....and to share a blunt with SRV and his manager in between sets, circa 1980.🤘😎
@@carlramsey1117 The origins of blunts go back to the Caribbeans during the 19th century, where Jamaica and Puerto Rico locals started smoking marijuana using tobacco leaves. What, you Gen XYZ morons thought YOU invented the blunt? 🤣🖕 GTFOOH!
I was on the Stevie Ray Train Right from the start having heard the buzz about this new blues guitarist that David Bowie had "discvoverd" and had him on a couple of songs from his "Let's Dance" album (SRV plays guitar on that song ) I was Lucky enough to have seen SRV in concert 4 times in the 80's . He was the real deal . He is in a class by himself & I've seen some of the greats Live over the years , Eric Clapton , Jimmy Page , Jerry Garcia , Eddie Van Halen , & Stevie was just different & so plugged in to the feel .
Ok, here’s another amazing band you should see. These guys have been world famous for decades. Very well known with millions of fans around the world. One of the all time best AND biggest rock bands of all time! RUSH! You will be glad you found them, guaranteed! Very high level musicians like STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN! No kidding, they are phenomenal!
I am a 66 yr old country boy that loves music from many many genres but SRV is so into everything note played & lyric sang, I'm not ashamed to say he does what only a fee have, he chokes me up, puts a lump in my throat to think that JESUS gave 1 of HIS children such a guft!
my dad had a funny observation back in the day when he saw him live. he said "He played behind his back and made it look so easy that it became boring(but NOT in a bad way) he said you just knew whatever note came next was going to resonate so beautifully and perfectly that knowing what to expect didnt hinder a "Fuckin' thing"
I heard BB King out of his own mouth say that there was no one better than Stevie Ray. Albert Collins said that Stevie played the blues the way it was supposed to be played. Eric Clapton who had even jammed with Jimi Hendrix said that he had never met anyone that played like Stevie because he never ran dry, he was like a bottomless well. And I discovered him when I was around 18 and in my fifties now I'm still as mesmerized by him as I was when I first heard it. And I love to see people's reactions that's never heard his stuff because it takes me back and I know that I had that same look on my face.
I was so so lucky to have met him im wichita falls tx after a show. He was such a sweet sweet man. Like someone else posted itbwas a kick in the gut when we lost him
To think, I was only a 30 min. ride to see him at almost any weekend, and never did. Had his music, listen to it all the time, though he would be with us for a long time.... and sadly, when I was 24, He died in the wreck, We were ALL STUNNED!! Local musician gone, way too soon.
When SRV started, he would play until the callous on his fingers would blister and fall off. He kept superglue near by so he could glue the callouses back on so he could keep playing.
@The Perseverance... I can assure you, it was a great show, as I recall. I was at this show, on the 11th day of July 1983, here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the El Macambo at Spadina Ave & College Street.

And he perfected the concept of stankface when he played. Nobody showed his passion better.
Well said 👍
He has phrasing that just goes on forever in recognizable blues patterns that feel so right.
It's not an opinion ,it's an actual fact that he's the GOAT.

Just subbed hoping for more Stevie Ray Vaughan. Try out his live performance of Life Without You from The Capitol Theater. It’s amazing!!!
I was lucky enough to see him 4 times. It makes me so happy to see others find him! He's my Pride and Joy!

great reation, his life was the guitar, you will get millions of views posting this guy
Stevie didn't just play the Guitar he melted that thing down, super talented. Sad day when he died...
Peak level musician
That performance will tough to beat. Good luck finding something better.
RIP
The greatest.
I grew up in San Antonio but Austin's 6th St. was the place for live music....and to share a blunt with SRV and his manager in between sets, circa 1980.🤘😎
A blunt in 1980?🤔
@@carlramsey1117 The origins of blunts go back to the Caribbeans during the 19th century, where Jamaica and Puerto Rico locals started smoking marijuana using tobacco leaves.
What, you Gen XYZ morons thought YOU invented the blunt?
🤣🖕
GTFOOH!
It's always nice to watch someone witness the greatness of *Stevie* *Ray* for the 1st time! 👍
greatest guitarist ever
Greatest player ever. Had he not died ìn a helicopter crash in 1989 he would have created monstrous music
He does !!! He was the most inspiring individuals of our time.
Stevie Ray Vaughn was simply the greatest!
I am a 66 yr old country boy that loves music from many many genres but SRV is so into everything note played & lyric sang, I'm not ashamed to say he does what only a fee have, he chokes me up, puts a lump in my throat to think that JESUS gave 1 of HIS children such a guft!
He spoke through his music no thought required
Oh Stevie could make a guitar talk like no other RIP Stevie !!!!!
Seeing this for the first time ever. Omg. He’s SUBJUGATING that guitar. It’s humble in his hands. Spectacular.
my dad had a funny observation back in the day when he saw him live. he said "He played behind his back and made it look so easy that it became boring(but NOT in a bad way) he said you just knew whatever note came next was going to resonate so beautifully and perfectly that knowing what to expect didnt hinder a "Fuckin' thing"
Stevie Ray Vaughn...."He's good"....Wow!
Little bitty dude with monstrous talent.
Like someone else posted itbwas a kick in the gut when we lost him
I love watching others enjoy Stevie!
SRV = The G.O.A.T.
Stevie was a showman but he was also the greatest blues guitarist that will ever be... till the next one...
Im so glad to be on earth at a time when I can hear SRV at all
To think, I was only a 30 min. ride to see him at almost any weekend, and never did. Had his music, listen to it all the time, though he would be with us for a long time.... and sadly, when I was 24, He died in the wreck, We were ALL STUNNED!! Local musician gone, way too soon.
the water and the fear and anger and frustration and the kaos flows out of his guitar
When SRV started, he would play until the callous on his fingers would blister and fall off. He kept superglue near by so he could glue the callouses back on so he could keep playing.
Stevie was so loved they have a statue of him in our state capitol Austin, Texas.
@The Perseverance... I can assure you, it was a great show, as I recall. I was at this show, on the 11th day of July 1983, here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the El Macambo at Spadina Ave & College Street.
IlovedStevieRayVaughn'smusic!!!.
Stevie Ray Vaughan is the goat 🐐. Nobody comes even remotely close.
That’s a bad, bad man. TEXAS gunslinger deluxe! Truly one of a kind. Phenomenal musician and TEXAN!
The man was a Blues GOD.no one better period.
Fantastic review by y’all. There will never be another SRV.
I seen him in Austin Texas itwas so good to see him live
Now, Steve Vai. For the Love of God (live) and Teeth of the Hydra (live) You musn't miss either of these.
I saw Stevie at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles a few months before he died.
I feel like I won a lottery.
You have it exactly right. Some people do it for money or because they want to. He did it because he needed to. Had to.
Sometimes I find myself waiting for the next album to drop. Then it hits me again.
Stevie Ray the greatest of all time.
😂😂😂 By the 3rd stanza his girl done powdered her wig, highlighted her 👀 eyes and RAN OFF WITH STEVIE, YOU'D BETTER GO AFTER HER DUDE!!!! LMBO! 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
