This isn’t the only movie that has denied an explanation, however, what it does do, (and what others like it have done,) is give a reason for why it all ends, which is that he learns the lesson that the script calls for. When he changes his ways and finds his happy ending, the curse is suddenly lifted. This gives us the idea, that God or the universe or something bigger, has chosen to do this. We don’t have to know what, exactly, but it’s definitely not just random. Someone or something wanted this to happen. If this was a movie such as “Like Mike” what with him getting electrocuted while holding Michael Jordan’s shoes, we would just accept it as silly weirdness, good enough for Hollywood magic, and move on. The rest of the movie is just people reacting to life. By having no explanation, but the curse still lifts the second the character is changed, we get the feeling that the reason the character went through this, is purely so that they can have their character arc and become a better person. Someone or something had to interfere. It’s basically Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, without ghosts.

Simple. Bill Murray's character is forced to relieve each day because he didn't appreciate the smaller things in life. He only beats the loop once he grows as a person and learns to appreciate what he has and help his fellow man. How it occurs, well my headcanon is that Puxatawni Phil is a guardian angel of sorts. He holds Murray's Character ala It's a Wonderful Life until the job is done, only the positive consequences stay at the end.
@James Kraatz Yeah. I mean this film is kinda of a reimagining of It's a Wonderful Life of sorts. Murray's character has to learn to appreciate life itself and once he does learn to make the most of it and not squander his gift and share it with the world only then does the cycle break. It only takes a few selfless acts to make a difference in people's lives.
I mean while it's probably not an in film explanation I always thought that like it was thematically that he goes to puxatony every year to report on groundhogs day yet he doesn't really know anyone there, he gets stuck in a time loop of that same day and it doesn't break out until he meets all these people etc.
It is significant that Bill Murray's character is the only one that realises (or perceives) that the same day is repeating. So what do the other characters do on the subsequent iterations of the day after they encounter him? Each time his reaction to these people is increasingly frustrated or angry. Do none of these other characters speak to each other and say "Well, that was rude of him, why did he do that?"
We all know that the time loop actually happened because Yoshikage Kira was in the town that day and botched a setup of BITES ZA DUST, decided to roll with it, and then had to keep turning back time because he kept being almost defeated at like 11:00 at night. The fact that Bill Murray was able to finish his character arc was a coincidence.
This is literally the only piece of media were I was fully aware and fine with a lack of answer in the movie as a kid. And I do belive children not questioning stuff is overstated.
My explanation for why the loop is thus: Because the writers said so The Loop is a representation of the monotony of a closed-off life, and the hopelessness, helplessness, demoralization, and detachment that comes with it. Only by actually paying attention, engaging, and going out of his way to improve everything around him does it change. Not when he kills himself, not when he does edgy, NoN-cOnFoRmAtIvE things; when he sees, savors, and improves the things around him, as well as himself. Stop to smell the flowers you pass by every day. Draw those blinds you always have closed. The Loop is a mindset, and so is being free of it.
Bill murray hits singularity for a brief moment, seeing every possible outcome of his actions for the next day. He then chooses his favourite plan and lives the day.
Leaving things unexplained not only allows people to develop their own meanings but it allows them to discuss it with other people. It allows people to collaborate and share their views on the film. And from a studio standpoint can allow more people to talk and learn about the film thereby getting more people to watch the film.
I personally think Ned Ryerson was the cause of the time loop. I mean think about his dialogue on the second day: “First shot right out of the box! You are sharp as a tack today!” Isn’t that a bit weird to say to someone you haven’t seen in years? Especially the “today” part?
Starting the movie with the protagonist already mid-loop is a really intriguing idea, but for the payoff to work at all, especially in a comedy, the audience really needs to see the first time through. The movie Palm Springs found a great way to do both: you have two characters. One has been in the loop for a while at the start of the movie, and the other is starting it for the first time.
I always thought it was the 6 extra weeks of winter giving him 6 weeks of time loop... Until I realized there are way more than 6 weeks worth of days in the movie
Ned Ryerson puts Phil in the time loop, until he buys the insurance from him. All that character grow Phil does, doesn't matter. Only thing that matters is that in the end, he buys that life insurance from Ned.

I've heard so many stories about the making of a good movie that include "but the studio executives wanted to do this thing that would have ruined it, but the writers were able to win out." Other times in the story of bad movies there are references to how studio executives put a lot of crap in the script because that's what they figured audiences wanted to see. Has there ever been a case of studio executives forcing the creative team to change something and the movie becoming better because of it?
"Why does Buzz freeze around Andy if he thinks he's real?" I actually have a theory about that, From Buzz's perspective, he's on an alien planet & the toys freezing is some sort of local custom He may not know WHY they do this, but he figures these locals know this world better than he does, so he just goes along with it
there is this one scene that kind of niggles at me. It's that final day before the bachelor auction where Phil is playing the piano in the band and the piano teacher is there, and she specifically says that Phil is her student... Since the day resets, it would suggest he must have gone to get another lesson and I would surmise that at this stage he's become proficient enough that he wouldn't have had to, especially given that day he was doing countless 'errands' throughout town that made him the town darling. Actually it doesn't overly bother me, but maybe she could have explained it more because I'm left with the notion that on the final day when he manages to make pretty much everyone in town love him, he still let a young girl get booted out of a piano lesson so he could get a lesson.
If it makes you feel better, assume there's an unseen scene where Phil encounters the piano teacher, "reminds" her of how she gave him a lesson or two when he was younger and he wanted to show her how he'd improved, then sits in and helps with the lesson for the girl he originally got booted to make up for it. Kid gets her lesson, teacher thinks she really got Phil started (even if her memory is hazy about it) so she's happy to claim she taught him later, everyone wins. He's got time somewhere in his crazy schedule to spend half an hour that way.
You know.. I think I know where the time loop began. You know the scene where the crew are trying to leave to get back to their studio in time. The snowstorm started to pick up out of nowhere. That is where I believe the time loop curse began..

But in groundhog day, this is the first time I've seen the Bill Murray "Character" in a state of misery and uncertainty. I just think it's interesting.
My theory on why it’s happening is that some supernatural being like a God trying to make Phil a better person by repeating the same day! Only when Phil cared for other people and became a great person did he continue the days as normal. For all we know, this could happen to many bad people with good in them and their memories of the ordeal could just be erased with their good actions remaining

9:25-9:50 *eddie gets stuck in a time loop* 9:48 *eddie's cute laugh* My theory is that in every episode of Eddache that starts and ends, is still part of that time loop. In the beginning, Eddie is OK, but at the end, he dies. But later in a newer episode, he is still alive but then dies afterwards. I think after this episode, all the other episodes are basically Eddie keep on reviving and dying because of the time loop that Mr. Groundhog gave him.
I love time loops. You get so much character development out of it. Some of the best time loops has been in Star Trek. There’s also this YA book called Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. It’s a time loop. It’s amazing.
Timeloops are timetravel. It's someone travelling back in time at the same point in time, replacing their younger self. I mean, there is an aspect that betrays timetravel, which is the lack of aging. But maybe that just means his conscience is timetravelling from his older body into his younger at the end of the day. Anyway, I dont know why people want to disprove that loops are timetravelling.
Fantastic video. While I haven’t seen the movie or plan on doing so in the near future I do appreciate the impact it left. I also enjoyed rage ninteen’s animation bits. Keep up the great work everyone.
it should be noted that Live Die Repeat is not an original movie, it's plot is lifted directly from a manga with the exact same time loop premise called "All you need is Kill" about a rookie soldier fighting a hopeless war against a really abstract alien force and through the process of dieing repeatedly, gains the skills to become the second greatest soldier in the world with the help of the first in a story thats largely about the dehumanizing effect we have when we stop viewing life and death as blip on our radar, theres a version out there illustrated by the dude who made Death Note, if you can stomach painful looking deaths, you'll get a kick out of Ground Hog day: Saving Private Ryan edition.

Palm Springs is a pretty good time loop movie.
9:25-9:50 *eddie gets stuck in a time loop*
9:48 *eddie's cute laugh*
My theory is that in every episode of Eddache that starts and ends, is still part of that time loop. In the beginning, Eddie is OK, but at the end, he dies. But later in a newer episode, he is still alive but then dies afterwards. I think after this episode, all the other episodes are basically Eddie keep on reviving and dying because of the time loop that Mr. Groundhog gave him.
i’ve been so exited for this video for almost a ~w e e k~
Realising it on Groundhog day, nice
“There can BE no WITNESSES”
I genuinely laughed at that part at the end
I always thought it was when he bangs his head because the time loop ends later once he hits his head again
8:49 I agree with the random talking mushroom
3:57 holy shit! It's Ellen Rose from Outsidextra! What are you doing here?
I KNEW IT SOUNDED LIKE HER
Thank god he never forced himself on anyone, that would have been really uncomfortable to watch.
9:29 king dragon sends his regards...
I love how in the gypsy scene, you can hear Trooper being played in the background
One of the cars in the first cars movie's crash was allergic to fuel. After the crash, he is the only car that appears without damage.
Groundhog Day: It’s [insert time loop movie] but February.
I love time loops. You get so much character development out of it. Some of the best time loops has been in Star Trek.
There’s also this YA book called Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. It’s a time loop. It’s amazing.
I remember reading that book in school
The day this guy snaps is the day cartoons shall fear.
I didn't even recognise Nando's voice! It's a subtle change he's done, how cool!
The fact he says “‘how does cat dog poop” isn’t really important’ but now has a video on it 👀 (both this and that video are great tho)
I mean, it's clear why, because it breaks when he makes an honest connection with the producer instead of a selfish one.
Considering the actual lore of the Groundhog Day tradition claims Punxsutawney Phil (that's the groundhog's name) is immortal... Huh.
I forgot Huey, Dewey and Louie went through their own Groundhog day...
The continuation in their movie was odd
9:13 "A character who adapts" mr bowley sir he is taking a bath with a toaster
