  • It's not uncommon for television shows to be cancelled. It is, however, rare for a comedy show to be cancelled because it is too funny. That was the unfortunate fate of Police Squad!

    I hate to be that guy, even though I really don't, but if you're gonna drink on camera can you at least refrain from smacking your lips and making that awful "Ahhh" sound? It's obnoxious and gross.

    • @TheDJChurch
      @TheDJChurch 6 лет назад +201

      I can't tell how serious you're being, so assuming the highest level of severity: Fantastic response there. What's the point of an audio product if you're going to spoil it those sounds? Is this how you usually respond to critiques and criticism? Truly professional. I stand by what I said, it's obnoxious, and ruins virtually any audio product.
      Assuming it's not all that serious: Still, it's awful, grating on the ears.

      And here I thought you would be like, a reason person who cared about the product they made and the views of the people who consume the product, guess not. If you're unable to take criticism maybe you should turn the comments off. If you're gonna reply you could use some of those writing abilities you have and try to respond with something other than vague disregards.

    2 things:
    1. The writers said they were relieved when the show was cancelled because it was too hard to write for on a weekly basis.
    2. The number of trash cans Frank Drebin hits with his car increments with each episode.

      Had the show lasted, the network would have wanted 26 episodes a year. One of the great things about most streaming series is that they drop six to ten episodes every 18 to 24 months. It allows for much better script and production quality (though Police Squad! hilariously went out of its way to look poorly produced), and attracts performers who might be reluctant to limit their opportunities by tying themselves to a punishing production schedule for half of each year.

    The show also had no laugh track, which was great, so you weren't treated like an idiot that needed to be told when something was funny. It wasn't till the mid 2000's till comedy shows began to remove the laugh tracks again. It was just too far ahead of it's time for the idiots at the network to understand.

    • @ArthurTRead
      @ArthurTRead 6 лет назад +30

      I can't stand laugh tracks either because they make me less immersed in the show and they also get really annoying after a while.
      lucky for me I don't want a lot of sitcoms or comedy shows so I don't have to witness them much

    • @RupeeRhod
      @RupeeRhod 6 лет назад +28

      Sorry can we just talk about how the is empirical evidence that laugh tracks work, it's not about insulting intelligence, but about the natural human response to hearing other people laughing?
      If you focus on the laugh track you're missing out, it's not something done to make an unfunny show seem funny, it's not something done to tell you when to laugh. It's done so when you laugh you get validated in laughing whether you want to admit it or not, it works, and it works well.
      I'm not saying I like it or not, but if you wanna kill laugh tracks you better start a global human conditioning and evolved genetics program to change humanity.
      People whining about laugh tracks are way worse than the laugh tracks. It's called selective attention, much like before ad-blockers we learned how to ignore banner ads we learned how to filter out laugh tracks if you dislike them.
      Or be bitter focus on laugh tracks and never pay attention to things legitimately funny because there happened to be a laugh track surrounding it.

Had to explain it to my friend, was overheard by the guys behind us, they all started laughing. Everyone else missed the joke. If it'd been a stuffed cat, maybe they would have got it. No Roddenberry didn't get his fingers in this. This would have been very early in career. Forbidden Planet is based on the Shakespeare play The Tempest. The story was written by Irving Block and Allen Adler. Other star in the film were Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and Richard Anderson (who was Oscar in The Six-Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman). If you haven't seen this flick, watch it. • @WJames-nq2df
    @WJames-nq2df 6 лет назад +350

    To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Police Squad. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of forensic science, most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Drebin's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Police Squad truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Drebin's existential catchphrase "It's the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girls dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year's Day." which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Leslie Nielsen and David Zucker's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
    And yes, by the way, i DO have a Police Squad tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

    It's actually weird that we now have shows like Cunk on Series which leans so heavily on the word play, dead pan delivery and sight jokes; audiences, critics and broadcasters love it. I can't tell you how many Americans love it and many audiences and that is cramed with many many jokes per minute but with the beauty of streaming platforms and smart TV is that you can pause and go back to it. I can't tell you how many Philomena Cunk jokes I laughed so much and found it hard to catch up on. I wouldn't be surprised if Dianne Morgan and Charlie Brooker borrowed heavily on Police Squad.

    "City slicker in your fancy German car."
    I always thought if someone thinks Homer is a slick city guy then they would mistake a station wagon for a German car. Is that not it?

    British humour is the best form of humour

    • @PhantomFilmAustralia
      @PhantomFilmAustralia 6 лет назад +15

      Very true. The reason being is that in America, the actors try to be funny through personality and pandering. British humor, it is the all about the performance in delivering the lines. Airplane-using all non-comedic performers is the perfect example.
      British comedy is subtle. American comedy is like a sledgehammer.
      American comedians perceive that they are funny. British comedic actors know they are funny, but play the hilarious scenario as straight, allowing the audience to make that judgement.
      Some american humor is great, however, on the most part, a joke is usually made at the expense of somebody else. In Britain, the joke is usually made at the expense of joke-tellers themselves.

    I couldn't agree more that Leslie Nielsen was a brilliant actor and I'd love to see this unfairly short-lived series someday, because it's got all the right ticks in all the right boxes for me, though it appeals to me as a Monty Python fan as well as a Simpsons fan.
    Meanwhile, you improved Bud Light by making a shandy of it. And you chose well in that regard, because you just wouldn't do that to a good beer.
