I've always liked the idea of split Timelines. For example: you are given the choice of either getting out of bed the moment your alarm goes off or wait another half hour or so. Each moment causes a split that has minor or massive consequences, for better or worse. Like the moment Marty doesn't race and get in an accident: that's a moment that should have been a split Timeline. Nothing is really set in stone since those stones could be paved in another direction or go down the one built but later hit another fork in the road.
@@Tortue2006 A multiverse can be different than alternate timelines though. For example, you can easily justify how an alternate universe exists with giant radioactive pigs with wings that co-exist with talking dinosaurs. Because, well, it's an alternate universe. You don't really *need* a reason, any kind of world that you can think of has the possibility of existing. That being said, it's pretty hard to argue how that same world can exist in an alternate timeline through natural choices.

i absolutely love the conclusion that maybe the future *is* written, but if we don’t act with love and compassion those parameters, *that’s* when things go wrong. people often think that the song “the power of love” has little to do with these films, but it really has everything to do with them - love is the transformative force that saves/changes many characters, and even the timeline itself. it sounds a little cheesy, but i’ve always loved that emotional, human core to an otherwise action-packed trilogy of films.

That bit about Clara reminds me a lot of what happens in Stein's gate at the ends Spoilers: after finally fixing the timeline, the MC realizes that not only is his love interest fated to die I'm the original timeline, his past self actually SEES her dead body, but he eventually realizes that her death isn't set in stone, it's him seeing what he thinks is a dead body is what's fated to happen, so he saves her by creating a scenario where his past self thinks he sees a dead body, but she isn't actually dead
If it was the Clayton Ravine, for Clara having crashed into it, but when doc travelled back and 1955 Doc and Marty found the gravestone reading "His beloved Clara". Doc going back alone must have still saved Clara, right? I wonder what the Ravine was called in THAT period, where 1955 Doc and Marty existed in a timeline where Clara had been saved, but Doc died as Marty hadn't travelled back to become "Clint Eastwood"
One theory that got brought up somewhere is that Clara was so grief striken by Doc's death that she threw herself off the Ravine. It's a dark explanation but considering how smitten they are with each other and the brutal way Doc died, it is a plausible one.

Can it be said Marty actually started to make multiple timeline changes before pushing George out of the way? Yeah, time travel is one of those really fascinating discussions anyone could have. Like there's a wide variety of ways of going about it. Paradox Theory, Multi-Universe theory, The Branching Timeline Theory, the Theories that counter Paradoxes in every conceivable way, etc, etc The way I like to go about it is a sort of Multi-universe Theory. There's never one true timeline, only a series of timelines based on decision after decision. Possibility upon possibility. Meaning that no matter what, there's always some sort of universe where things are very much different. As an example; a universe where Shrek 3 was actually good. Or a universe where the highest grossing film is The Room of all things. And maybe a universe where Ash Ketchum has piloted a mecha at least once. Who knows if that's even possible? And that's why I like Multi-universe theory. Makes things wacky as all hell. Besides, if a guy can turn Shaggy into an anime protagonist with Scooby being able to use a gun against motherfucking Yosemite Sam... then I think basically anything is possible at that point.
yeah, like logically, it doesn't exist, cause if it did, any change we make could undo the creation of said time machine, or our reason for using it, so it can't exist, but theoretically speaking it does exist, and there are multiple timelines and changing anything results in being stuck in a new one while an alternate version of you continues to exist in the previous one
Same here, it’s not like people like us just make a video about Barney the dinosaur and the whole time we complain about Joe Biden and every other looney tune in office

I found this channel, wanted to subscribe after a few videos. Was even going to comment on how in back to the future 2, how does old biff return to the future marty and doc are in if he changed it? Then 4:40 happened. You . . you do realize that the people who made the 'vaccine' has since then admitted that it doesn't prevent transmission, right? You do realize that it was revealed that States with mask mandates fared no better against Covid than those without? Right? oi m8 you got a loicense for that misinformation you're spreading?
The idea of time travel where you might change or erase yourself gives me a lot of anxiety. I can't watch About Time or Butterfly Effect for example. BTTF is the exception but I guess it's because I know it so well I can cope, plus it's a lot of fun. My new favourite time travel film is Predestination. It's a perfect knot of continuity and much easier to follow than Primer.
yeah that stuff scares me, like when alice almost drinks too much and the doorknob tells her she almost blew out like a candle, always distubed me. you ever watch the movie Curvature? you might like it
5:15 To answer your question, yes, everyone still has free will in the movie. Just because someone's free will screws with the timeline, doesn't mean that everyone else is a slave to the consequences. The future plays out based on the choices everyone made. Marty bought a book from the future, Biff stole the book, Marty's mom married Biff out of desperation, and Doc Brown still chose to have a weird haircut.
I don't think Marty had a choice in the matter, if he did nothing Doc is dead by the terrorists, forcing him to go back in time to try to stop the event from happening, grading all three movies in the process. And by intervening in the first movie he gets stuck in the past resorting and him having to go to the distant past to save the doc from being killed in the old west. I think everything was predestined including Doc Brown inventing the flux capacitor, creating the entire movie plot moving forward. There is no free will in this movie, all the actions are predetermined and everyone's just playing the role as the actors who participated in the filling process.
I would take out the part about masks as the science now admits masks did nothing to stop the spread which was the whole reason for the resistance but instead people were blamed for a virus that wasn't going to be stopped in the first place
Okay so as weird as this sound There is a guy furry visual novel called adastra where this exact thing happens Except you aren't marty You have no free will and discovering that on a supposed romance sim is so scary
Imagine if there were a BTTF IV that revealed to Doc Brown that he understood the rules of time travel all wrong, thus explaining the free will with time travel
You (what ever is controlling your will) wants you to not believe you have free will But look at all the benefits You can’t be judge ever because you can’t control your will if you can’t control your wants Everyone would see prisoners as the same as us they were just unlucky Now every time you fail it’s a luck issue not a skill issue There is only 2 drawback with multiple consequences: it’s proven we already don’t have free will kinda just humans though not the universe No decision is ever yours because you don’t have free will No free will is free as the crisis your having right now gl
I think you are confusing terminology here. It's not time travel that takes away Loraine and George's free will, it's Marty! If anything, the fact that they don't go out after Marty changed the circumstances implies that they HAVE free will. If Marty was born regardless if his parents met this way or not, that would imply they have no free will and are destined to marry no matter how much you change their first meeting.
Yeah I feel like the we missed the major idea of branching timelines. Also personally I see it as what I like to call "the corkscrew timeline" where you appear to be heading back in time but its still actually linear for the person time traveling, so marty will only ever experience a timeline that he's in and thus the events technically are closer to happening a second time rather than changing the past. Think of a "do-over" where the first attempt doesnt stop existing, but we count the second tiem.
"That's not true! We've just seen a whole movie about future!" Well we've seen a whole movie about a future, that is non-existent, because Marty and Doc Brown changed it. So yea. You can't count the second movie's events as written into stone, because the future was changed. That's totally wrong logic there. Your counter argument about Doc Brown's statement, that the future hasn't been written yet, uses wrong data. Old data from the previous movie. Because of what Marty did (or respectively didn't) changed, what his future would be about, what would lead to what we have seen in the 2nd movie. That accident, that Marty had (or again, hadn't) at the crossroad, was a huge influence for his future in the previous part of the trilogy. So again, you operate with wrong data. That future we just saw, doesn't exist anymore at the end of BttF3, when Doc Brown tells them, that their future hasn't been written yet. Regarding the Avengers: Endgame, that's a completely different time travel (they even joke about BttF) with their own rules. They travel through the Quantum Realm, which is more akin to different realities, than actually traveling back in time. Think of it as going to the past is like going to another separate reality very close to ours, almost identical, but everything they change there, will stay there, won't affect the main "timeline", they are going to return to eventually. Loki escaping with the Tesseract in "2012" won't undo Loki's death at the hands of Thanos in 2018. This Loki, as the Disney + show of the same name shows, is a variant of Loki, it's not the original, who ended up being killed by Thanos. Same goes for 2014 Thanos, 2014 Gamora and 2014 Nebula. Tony snapping 2014 Thanos out of existence didn't undo the original snap, because that would be the logical outcome, if you kill Thanos in 2014, he can't do his snap in 2018! But that wasn't the case. 2014 Thanos is a Thanos variant, same as D+ Loki, same as 2014 Nebula, who got killed by her "future" self. This time travel (or as I call it more "reality travel") is why they only borrow the stones, they don't change anything even to make their lives better after return, as all the changes would stay there and wouldn't affect their own reality. Also the reason, why Steve had to return all the stones (and the hammah) is not to fix the main timeline, it's to fix those others, they lend the stones from. They left them vulnerable, but honestly, what would happen, if the Avengers kept the stones? Nothing, they would doom some "branches" on the "Sacred Timeline", that nobody cares about. Except they are the heroes, so they have to do the right thing. Honestly I think Christmas Carol (or Muppets Carol) is kinda same deal like the Avengers, meaning different kind of time travel, different rules, though I'm not familiar with that, so might be wrong here. Terminator is about predestination, not a flexible time travel, like BttF, so there's that.
Regarding Wilson and Chuck Berry’s song, I personally interpret that those two happened on their own without Marty’s influence and when he went to the past, he simply sped up when they first took action by inspiring them.
The masks did nothing. We know this now. I try so hard to ignore your ham fisted political insights but you stick them into every video whether it's relevant or not.

Even though he time travel gets a bit muddy compared to others in the same genre’s. The movie still is a good piece of filmmaking. Good acting, great soundtrack, great visuals, good storytelling, etc Now they even have a musical coming to broadway next year. I’d say pretty good if you ask me
I get where Crispin is coming from but I maintain that George and Loraine are happier in good 1985 not because they have more money but because George is a more confident person in general and has been able to give Loraine a better more loving relationship and the financial success is a by product of that not the cause.
Well when old biff gave his younger self the sports almanac they vanished from time but there younger self still got the book crating a type of bootstrap paradox so if Marty failed to get there parents back together that would have happened to him as well giving free will in the first movie and could of failed and vanished it just happened to work out for him
"Deceive yourself. Deceive the world. El psy kongroo." If you've not already, check out Steins;Gate. The beginning is a bit rough, but the second half is *sublime*.
I'm not a very philosophical person but I always viewed the idea that we don't have free will and the future is predetermined but by us not knowing out futures, it gives us the illusion of free will, and honestly, when you feel you have it, who cares if you actually do or not
Back to the Future (The first movie) it's my favorite movie of all time, I had never stopped to think about the implications of time travel when it comes to free will, this was a completely new topic for me to think about and I enjoyed it a lot.
The biggest problem with the time travelling consistency occurs in part II. Old Biff steals the time machine in 2015, goes back to 1955 gives himself the book then returns to 2015 for doc and Marty to have the time machine to travel back to the “alternate 1985”. This should be impossible, once Biff give himself the book, old Biff should have went back to the 2015 reality spawned from that point, basically it should be the same 2015 alternative reality as the alternative 1985. Doc even explained this in the movie when Marty said “ok, so we go back to the future and stop Biff from stealing the DeLoran” where Doc says “ we can’t because if we travel to the future from this point and time it will be the future of this reality.” That rule should have applied to old Biff when he changed the past in 1955. It’s a gaping plot hole in the series. In another neat fact, in Part II when everyone is back in 1955 ( part 1 Marty, Part II Marty, doc and old Biff) there are at least 3 DeLoreans there, and conceivably 4 if we are to believe there is a pre-destination paradox at play. 1. Part 1 Marty’s DeLorean 2. Part 2 Marty and Doc’s DeLorean 3. Old Biffs stolen DeLorean 4. The DeLorean buried in the mine for Part III if it’s already there due to a pre-destination paradox. It’s interesting to think about. 🤔
@I take everything Literally in no way does someone's choice not to mask up take away someone else's free will away. It's total bs. Has nothing to do with BTF, or free will, other than the choice itself. 2nd, it's propaganda because the masks do not stop the spread, is false info. Unless folks are all wearing masks rated to actually stop particulates as small as a virus, which most do not and even state that in the tiny print on the box. Again, total bs.
without Googling what that is, I assume it's related to the saying "Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" as in, if Marty is responsible for the song existing, then there's no way he should have heard it before he changed the past, therefore he couldn't have sang it? that or he wrote it himself before the loop began
The mear fact that marty can change the future by altering the past shows free will exists. If it was all deterministic, marty wouldnt be at risk of becoming erased because him succeding was pre determined. Martys parents also werent forced together by the universe, but by martys actions. They still had the will to say no. Deteminism in the physics sense also falls apart when quantam mechanics is taken into account (at least with what we know so far).

Spoilers: after finally fixing the timeline, the MC realizes that not only is his love interest fated to die I'm the original timeline, his past self actually SEES her dead body, but he eventually realizes that her death isn't set in stone, it's him seeing what he thinks is a dead body is what's fated to happen, so he saves her by creating a scenario where his past self thinks he sees a dead body, but she isn't actually dead

Couldn't it just stay Shonash Ravine?
One theory that got brought up somewhere is that Clara was so grief striken by Doc's death that she threw herself off the Ravine. It's a dark explanation but considering how smitten they are with each other and the brutal way Doc died, it is a plausible one.
i'm so confused now lol

Yeah, time travel is one of those really fascinating discussions anyone could have. Like there's a wide variety of ways of going about it.
Paradox Theory, Multi-Universe theory, The Branching Timeline Theory, the Theories that counter Paradoxes in every conceivable way, etc, etc
The way I like to go about it is a sort of Multi-universe Theory.
Maybe dam neat idea I guess just the proof I need proof that someone chose to make shaggy an anime protagonist or it was always gonna happen

yeah, like logically, it doesn't exist, cause if it did, any change we make could undo the creation of said time machine, or our reason for using it, so it can't exist, but theoretically speaking it does exist, and there are multiple timelines and changing anything results in being stuck in a new one while an alternate version of you continues to exist in the previous one

The idea of time travel where you might change or erase yourself gives me a lot of anxiety. I can't watch About Time or Butterfly Effect for example. BTTF is the exception but I guess it's because I know it so well I can cope, plus it's a lot of fun.

To answer your question, yes, everyone still has free will in the movie.
Eddie on BTTF is awesome!
1:03 I think the game Super Daryl Deluxe actually has Scrooge become a Ghostbuster
I thought this was gonna be a movie comparison bc my dumbass read the title as Free Willy- y'know the whale movie 🗿
Finally something from Eddie with back to The future. Nice video eddie

Also me: "Hey, kid! Stop pointing at your junk!"
Imagine if there were a BTTF IV that revealed to Doc Brown that he understood the rules of time travel all wrong, thus explaining the free will with time travel
You (what ever is controlling your will) wants you to not believe you have free will
But look at all the benefits
You can’t be judge ever because you can’t control your will if you can’t control your wants
Everyone would see prisoners as the same as us they were just unlucky
Now every time you fail it’s a luck issue not a skill issue
There is only 2 drawback with multiple consequences:
it’s proven we already don’t have free will kinda just humans though not the universe
No decision is ever yours because you don’t have free will
No free will is free as the crisis your having right now gl
There is. The telltale game is technically BTTF 4. It takes place a year after the events of the third film and expands on Doc Backstory.
Oh cool. You added tou political opinions to entertainment and now I dint qanna watch it. Enjoy your boosters for the cold.

1. Part 1 Marty’s DeLorean
2. Part 2 Marty and Doc’s DeLorean
3. Old Biffs stolen DeLorean
4. The DeLorean buried in the mine for Part III if it’s already there due to a pre-destination paradox.

In Hindsight, free will looks like destiny.
The mear fact that marty can change the future by altering the past shows free will exists. If it was all deterministic, marty wouldnt be at risk of becoming erased because him succeding was pre determined. Martys parents also werent forced together by the universe, but by martys actions.
