Not sure if the 1980s as a whole did much to combat climate change and pollution, but I learned a few things from Captain Planet such as pollution, aftermath of water shortage, Venus' temperature, and even my first lesson on the Israel-Palestine clashes (yes, that was an actual episode).

I have mixed views on the show. In retrospect, it was naive and sometimes kind of wrong, but I do recall that it informed me about a lot of environmental issues that, as a kid, I just wasn't aware of.

    • @eksortso
      @eksortso 2 года назад

My views are not so mixed. Captain Planet was horseshit. Garbage storylines and production values aside, the show and the celebrities producing it weren't so much interested in humanity harmonizing with nature as it was with crippling humanity to the point where it couldn't actually handle oncoming environmental problems. DDT in much smaller doses could have saved millions of human lives. Way to save the planet: kill the humans off, so nobody would have to care. And hey, local conservation, what's that!? You want to focus more on local environmental problems that are solvable than on worldwide political agendas that won't help anything? Why aren't you living in fear like the powerless victims you are?? Think stupidly, act globally. No, seriously, screw that noise.

The problem is that Captain Planet was too much over the top for even kids to take it seriously.
When the villains build factories that produce pollution as their main product just because they are evil you have a problem.
Someone like Mr Burns would be a far better villain, he dumps nuclear waste in the park to save money, that is still over the top but his motivation is realistic even if his actions aren't.

    • @kenthuang436
      @kenthuang436 2 года назад +71

I always found it too preachy and I was five when the first season aired. Even as a five year old who didn’t even know what the environment even was, I questioned a lot of what was said in the show as it didn’t seem practical. Also they made action figures of the characters made out of plastic which is made in factories by sweatshop child workers producing even more pollution and most likely discarded and remain in a landfill which in turn adds to the land pollution issue once the toys were broken.

    • @loke6664
      @loke6664 2 года назад +37

@@kenthuang436 Yeah, it was rather preachy even with 80s standard.
I don't think the writers had anything to do with those plastic dolls (sorry, "action figures") though, Ted Turner probably needed an extra Ferrari and the people making the show had probably very little to say in that so I don't think that is a valid argument against the show.
But I think they should have done a little better job explaining environmental issues to kids. You get the impression that adults pollute because they think it is fun ignoring all the economical reasons for doing so.
When someones kids are starving they can't really say no to being a logger no matter how beautiful the forest is and that doesn't make them evil.
And writing tons of letters to politicians isn't very helpful, politicians don't care the least of the opinion of someone too young to vote.
Oh, and "Heart" is still a useless power. The fire kid is just too incompetent to use it right.

Environmental engineer (who was inspired by Captain Planet & Thornberrys, by the way) here:
One of the "good" things about climate change, it's that is such a complex phenomenon that whatever you do, it helps. Yes. Turn off the lights. Recycle. Use less plastic. Reduce your meat intake. Walk more. Print less stuff. And so on.
But also you were very right about many people doing the same. 2000 people cycling? Cute. 200,000 people cycling? Now there's suddenly a critical mass to push for more bike lanes and pedestrian areas in your local town or city. Enough people brought awareness of single use plastics and now many countries are working towards banning them. Energy saving processes didn't appear because some smart ass scientist invented a better bulb, but because enough people pushed that in everyday discussions.
So yeah. We all have a tiny part to play. Unless you're the CEO of Exxon, Shell, Petrobras, a president of a country or a billionaire. Then you have a huge part to play.

Captain Planet is like a cheesy bland tool, albeit one which has been stuck onto the minds of kids for a longer time than shows that contain much better (or far more accurate) research (but tend to flop much harder and become obscure more easily).
That said, there are films and shows which are even worse in terms of research than something plain preachy like Captain Planet.

So, in the US, I'm probably ignorant, but it feels like these issues aren't actually doing anything to save the environment. The plastic straws being phased out are replaced with arguably more harmful paper straws with a bad taste, plastic bags are arguably the best option compared to paper and toat with the former using tree parts while being more fragile and the latter being environmentally worse and is produced with the most environmentally harmful products. And as for recycling bins, while they are more common, they are also the most contested measure because nobody agrees how to recycle certain objects, such as whether cans should be recycled per can and being charged more or by weight and requires the cans to be destroyed to accomplish.

Sorry to be overly cynical, but with all messages like this, it won't work. No individual effort by a person will stop climate change. Even banded together, if everyone was recycling, alot of pollution is caused by systematic failures. Concrete manufacturing is an example. That creates alot of waste. But the big problem is, its not as simple as get rid of concrete. Concrete is a useful material for building, and is used extensively for cheap houses. So, invent a revolutionary new material or cheaper and less pollutive way of making concrete, cause a major spike in homelessness that won't go back down or continue polluting. Your choice. That is one of many examples. Many, many examples. Sorry for being so cynical again, thx for reading.

If everyone chooses choice C (which no one will or wants to(including me(this is turning into lisp code with the brackets))) we might keep our planet in a state we can live on. I think the biggest takeaway here as it comes to Captain Planet isn't really about how correct the show was in its individual ideas but more the changes that it inspired. Science changes CONSTANTLY and so do politics, so any solutions that it proposed that were based in either of those two areas...which was basically EVERY solution that it proposed... were doomed to become very quickly outdated the more that we learned going forward. Those in charge of Captain Planet were working with what they knew. We know a LOT more now and, well...turns out a lot of those old assertions didn't hold up well.
However, the intent of Captain Planet was more to raise awareness of these problems and, to that end, I would say it was HIGHLY successful. It opened up eyes that were before blind to the effects of climate change and provided motivation for people to make changes, even if small ones, for a better tomorrow. We're STILL a long way from where we need to be...and it's certainly arguable that we're not making these changes anywhere NEAR fast enough...but if people are taking it upon themselves to clean up our planet and reverse climate change and their inspiration is Captain Planet, then Captain Planet did its job.
It's not enough for just us, as people, to reduce, reuse and recycle... however, if we do NOTHING, then we risk bringing about our own destruction and will only have ourselves to blame. We can't just ignore climate change and hope it'll go away because it won't. The system needs to change and it will take people to change it, just as it took people to destroy it in the first place. If not our politicians, if not our corporations, if not our governments...
Then, it IS up to us.
That's the message that Captain Planet was giving us and that's the legacy that the show ultimately left us with.
    The power is OURS...

while the messages may save been grim, heavy handed and some times inaccurate I feel we today need positive messages. with out them we have in some places back slid or begun doing things my generation grew up knowing NOPT to do.
I feel kids need to hear messages in cartoons like "We are all different and we all believe in different things so lets respect that" or "Other people have feelings too its not nice to hurt them or destroy the things they care about" we need to learn the things Captain Planet never focused on like anger management, setting aside hate, being in a healthy relationship, understanding LGBT issues etc It doesn't have to be Captain Planet just a show that targets kids that's not afraid to talk about gays or divorce or religion or race .
and if a show is going to talk about "Solutions" it needs to step back and admit that problems don't have "One always correct in every situation solution"
rather then arguing over if its better to have solar or wind power we should admit that both have advantages and both have disadvantages and work towards a 3rd option
rather then fighting over banning guns vs gun rights we should admit that both have advantages and both have disadvantages and work towards a 3rd option
in any problem we have there are always options that we refuse to consider because the liberals want the opposite of the conservatives and the conservatives want the opposite of the liberals and neither side wants to work together , to look at all the data and see a new possibility that works.
They both want one idea that is "Right" and all other ideas are "Wrong" so they don't even hear out other options.
there is much wisdom to be gained from the child who says "Why not both?" or in some cases maybe neither. you just can not solve every thing with one solution that applies in all situations. You need to hear every side because both sides state facts.
you say "Follow the science" but both sides have since facts on there side.
as long as you refuse to combine the two sides in to one you'll never get any thing done.
and you shouldn't pressure people to agreeing to a solution that still has flaws
Also don't take out your anger on "The system" the police have feelings and families too. they are doing there job and that job protects YOU the police use force when they have no other choice. when suspects threaten them and give them a hard time they have to use force to get the situation under Controle. If you are a suspect you are not being "Called a criminal" they just want to ask you questions. if you have done nothing wrong then let them search you and when they find you did nothing wrong they will let you go.
More black people are arrested for crimes because black leaders tell there people to resist arrest and to stay angary and that crime is in there culture and they have a right to do it.
and to accuse white people of being the problem is its self a racist attack White is a race and male is a sex if you hate white males you are racist and sexist White men did not cause YOUR problems .

While yes, I agree that the institutions are the cause of famines, the 3 worst famines in history had absolutely nothing to do with capitalism, in fact the absolute worst famine, being the great leap forward in 1950s China, was because of the rejection of capitalism through the communist party of China.
you also want the governments to solve the problem...even though most of what you said was that the governments don't care about the problem, and therefore we'll just be giving politicians more power than they really needed. So instead of throwing power and more tax money at the situation, why not offer incentives for practical environmental awareness like giving tax cuts to private companies for new developments in electric cars, cutting the red tape and offering financial assistance to encourage entrepreneurs into creating nuclear plants to slowly phase out the use of fossil fuels, and giving people the real facts about climate change instead of crying apocalypse and actually putting accountability on the major producers of the world's pollution (which are in fact India and China).
Lastly, overpopulation isn't white supremacy nor is it a real problem anymore, the feat that the population would exceed crop growth was solved by Fritz Haber. Look at populations in Africa, they can barely eat, but it's not because the *evil* white man is flying over, picking their crops, and killing their livestock. It's because they live in a geographical wasteland. Sam Kinison said it perfectly. "If you want to end world hunger, don't send them packages of food, send them to WHERE THE FOOD ALREADY IS!" If you want to stop overpopulation in India, then go over there and fix it. India knows that they're too crowded, but they don't give enough of a damn to fix it themselves, so if they won't, then someone needs to.
I know a lot of these solutions are suited for a constitutional republic like the United States, so hopefully within the sea of pro communist replies I get, someone is able to post some ideas on how other systems of government may fix their own environmental issues.

The show tried to tell me that I was a bad person who didn't care about the environment and the only way to show that I cared was to write to politicians but the problem is I was in five and couldn't read or write legibly and I thought women had babies by becoming fat randomly.

Conservatives hate it because they often don't think climate change is real and hate the idea of environmental regulation.
Other people just found it cheesy and yeah, it was rather preachy, most of the stuff going on in it couldn't be changed by a normal citizen especially a child. Granted I guess the real idea was to try to make them environmentalists that would be voting in 10ish years and maybe make them try to make their parents activists.

Goddamn I knew the show covered more than just basic environmental disasters and its super villains. I'd heard of the aids episode before, but they really had no place covering other things. i get why they wanted to and Im sure it was done with good intent, but holy shit its just ridiculous hearing about it.
I mean the overpopulation one is even messier than its origins. We just had a pandemic, and it showed how woefully unprepared we were for dealing with it in dense populations. I'm less concerned about impact and more about quality of life. The more people there are the harder it is to assure standards of living. Sure some of it can be chocked up to shitty systems, but some of it has to fall on carrying capacity (the amount of resources in an environment and how much life it can support). I agree every human has the right to a home, food, water, etc etc base human rights, but we already out strip production for lumber, so how do we build houses? How do we maintain houses already built? It's all wayyyyy more complicated than the politics.

recycling would be nice, if it actually did anything, but processing recycled garbage is too labour intensive, which makes the products of recycling too expensive to be worth while, and so recycled stuff generally just goes into a landfill like all the other trash.
now maybe robots can fix that, by taking the labour cost to zero so long as the machine's energy and upkeep costs are low enough it could work...so long as the things being recycled CAN be recycled. glass and metal are generally really easy to recycle, but they often have the issue of being mixed with other things, so coloured glass generally has to be that same colour or something which is a mix of two colours, you won't get clear glass from coloured glass, and the same is true for plastic. plastic has the added issue that it degrades when recycled. similarly metal has alloy problems. carbon steel can be easily made into any other kind of carbon steel, we know pretty well how to pull carbon out of steel and put it back, but pulling out molybdenum or tungsten or chromium...bit harder, not impossible just more expensive than going the other way.
as for timber and paper, these are made from forests that are grown specifically to be cut down, they are a crop, like wheat or corn, and like a crop they are replaced when they are cut down. this is actually a good thing, because a growing tree pulls more CO2 than a mature tree.
now that CO2 WILL be released back into the atmosphere at some point, either when it is burnt or when it decays...but it means you would be better BURYING carboard or paper than recycling it, same for lumber. if you bury it, that carbon goes back into the ground and becomes coal some day. the caveat is you gotta bury it really deep or it will just decompose and release that carbon back into the air.
you can do the same thing with cotton clothes, or even wool, anything with carbon got its carbon from the atmosphere, so you can bury animals, we already bury humans but not nearly deep enough (except those ones that are like hermetically sealed)
you could raise literal scapegoats, goats that are raised, sacrificed, and buried to offset carbon emissions. but that would be a pretty big waste of money.
you would also need to bury A LOT to offset emissions.

The funny thing is, in a capitalist society, the free market allows you to choose to not support business that pollutes, so you can actually make a difference, along with others, to stop supporting businesses and in turn, affect what choices they make. The super rich get rich off of people buying their product. If you dont want to support a polluting company, a capitalist society allows you to not support them. Its interesting for someone who has seen how government works, like in your TMNT being censored in England, and for someone trying to get people to join together, you actively choose to go about it differently than I would think. Ultimately, my main point is, conservatives and liberals both want the best for everyone (minus politicians who only benefit themselves), but we think of different ways to achieve those goals. Im tired of the hate towards the average human who is conservative for being conservative, or towards liberals for being liberal. I dont think anyone is inherently bad for their political views. I like your videos cause they show a different perspective than I would have thought sometimes
