    I guessed it was Maggie, precisely because she was the least likely. I had just finished reading a book called "The Eleventh Hour" by Graeme Base, which was a mystery picture book about 11 different animals accused of eating an entire feast by themselves. Turned out it was the mouse who ate the feast by himself, which was obviously the least likely suspect. From that point on, as a kid, I would always guess that the culprit was the least likely suspect, not based on evidence, just based on what I assumed writers would do to try to make their mystery as difficult to solve as possible.

    You ever step back and think of how much of a risk making Maggie the shooter was?! That could have easily back fired, if it wasn't so perfectly executed.
    Fan backlash would have been outrageous of disliked because it was such a big cliffhanger and outrageous ending. It's legitmately only something golden era Simpsons could pull off.
    It's hard to say why this ended up working, but thankfully it did. I believe it was the conviction the writers had, that they planned on it and made a great mystery (like described in this video).

    I’ve watched this video dozens of times and I always noticed an error Eddache made. I wondered if that disproved his point, and I discovered a rabbit hole that only further proves his point.
    At 11:23, Eddache notes how Smithers leaves the town hall in the opposite direction to Burns. This is untrue, as Smithers turns left from the town hall, and in the very next shot Eddache shows, he shows that Mr. Burns also turned left on his way to the car park. And I wondered, does this mean Smithers could’ve been the one in the car park? The answer is no, and the extra clue showing us that has been right under our noses this whole time, or under our ears to be precise.
    What does Mr. Burns say when he enters the car park? “Oh it’s you. What are you so *’happy’* about?” Happy. He notes that the person who later shot him was happy when he found them. This makes sense, as the episode expects us to believe his killer was someone who had it out for him, and would gleefully welcome the chance to get their revenge with a smile on their face.
    But who was the only suspect who was neither angry at Burns, nor could gleefully want revenge? Smithers.
    Smithers was heartbroken, he had a very close relationship with Mr. Burns and that was thrown away, leaving him sad and depressed. He barely shows any real malice towards Burns at the town hall meeting but he is upset. But I doubt even Smithers at that point could bring himself to harm Burns, regardless of how he was treated. Which brings us to Burns’ quote. Smithers seems like the last guy who’d be smiling after the meeting, I doubt he could even try to force himself to smile at that point. But he does enjoy Pardon My Zinger, so if he would be smiling at 3:00pm, it’d be watching the show somewhere else and not at the car park.
    So even if he did leave in the same direction as Mr. Burns and if you decide to ignore him never missing Pardon My Zinger so he could be at the car park, there would still be no reason for Smithers to be happy at that time, and thus, the shooter cannot be him.
    It’s amazing that along with the myriad of other clues showing it couldn’t be Smithers, they actually wrote it in a way that it couldn’t be him based on his character. Only goes to show how well this murder mystery was written.

      Yeah The Simpsons seemed like a way too cynical show to be parodying a 15 year old mystery at the time so o nascent value its kind of weird, it’s also worth noting that many writers were huge Twin Peaks fans and wanted to make a similar commentary on soap operas (Hell they parody the red room scene in this very episode). Then again Twin Peaks was pretty dead by this point so I don’t know

    • @Anastas1786
      @Anastas1786 5 лет назад +37

      Normally, I'd agree, but _The Simpsons_ is a cartoon. I don't mean that in a dismissive "you're thinking about this too hard" kind of way; I mean the show embraces that it's fictional and often takes advantage of its cartoonishness, and traditionally, in all forms of fiction but especially spy thrillers and murder mysteries, a suppressor actually _does_ make a gun near-silent.
      In real life or a more realistic work, it certainly wouldn't have mattered much, but going by the Laws of Fictional Gun Physics, I'd say putting a suppressor on Skinner's gun was definitely intended to mean "Skinner couldn't have shot Burns because if he had we wouldn't have heard the shot".

    I’ve always argued that Mr. Burns shot himself... I mean he dropped the gun trying to take the sucker from Maggie. She didn’t pull the trigger, the gun went off when it was dropped. It did technically land on her lap, but it was all because of Mr. Burns doing. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      From a holster no it wouldn't have fell out those are specifically made to Hold guns

    • @mypalewrists
      @mypalewrists 5 лет назад +5

      fred white I agree that in real life a gun probably wouldn’t as easily be able to fall out of a holster. With this being a cartoon and a lot of things on the Simpsons defying logic, it’s not that crazy that his gun falls out during the struggle. If you watch the clip of Mr. Burns explaining what happened you can see it falling into the car as he leans closer to Maggie trying to take her sucker. The gun falls on her lap and goes off. I’m not saying my theory is 100% true. I just think it’s something interesting to consider.
