The refrigerators were off to the side in the 20s and 30s because they were brand new, so kitchens weren’t ready to integrate them. Far more common were ice boxes, which usually were placed near a back door (away from the rest of the kitchen) so ice men could deliver ice directly to the ice box without entering the house.
As for all the green, in the 20s and 30s shades that were all called Nile green were EVERYWHERE. The discovery of King Tut’s tomb made “Egyptian” themes popular, so when pale green to jade green were marketed as “Egyptian” they dominated fashion and interior design.

I'm from Miami, which Roaring Heights was heavily inspired by! I can offer a few insights.
Specifically for Floridian art deco, pastel colors were incredibly popular. Pinks, mint greens, baby blues, soft yellows. I grew up in a pink art deco home. When you go elsewhere you'll see a lot more of a stark contrast in color and more drama, especially in NYC art deco, Los Angeles art deco, Las Vegas art deco. The soft and playful color palettes are definitely what solidifies the Miami vibes.
There's a lot of interesting history behind Miami and its architecture, and I feel like EA did a really good job on capturing it.

thank you for the information! for episode two i will make sure I read up on specifically the miami style

In EA defense green was a prominent color during this time period. Art Deco when I did my research was around 1920-1930s and before ww1 hit homes had the bold colors of greens and reds. Which I feel like the EA did use correctly during the builds of these houses though I do agree the color schemes are not the most pleasing to the eyes.

Sorry for the second comment, Bonnie and Clyde were infamous bank robbers in the early 1930s that were killed in a shootout with the police. You’re probably thinking of the movie from the 70s about them. But I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with you on the references being weak. They reference Mae West, the Marx brothers, Little Orphan Annie and so many other people and characters appropriate to the Depression Era time period that art deco was in fashion.

By the way, just to note, "Jim Pickens first appeared in Kevin's old RUclips channel during the series "Adventures in San Andreas" beginning on the 14th of August, 2011 (a series that is now private)." Roaring Heights did not come out until December of 2013. Because Kevin uses Jim Pickens in nearly every Sims iteration he plays (1,2,3&4), not too many know that he created that character outside of the Sims.

    • @TheMya1988

Also, according to the wiki, "The layout and architecture of the world is based on Miami, New York, and Chicago according to SimGuruTaterTot and SimGuruBrett on The Sims 3 Live Broadcast - Roaring Heights Gameplay video. The city hall is based on Buffalo City Hall and the lighthouse is based on a lighthouse in Kálfshamarsvík, Iceland."
I truly love this world, and one of my favorite machinima creators @ZeeGee Sims begins her series (The Prequel),with the sisters, Cornelia (Goth) and Agnes Crumplebottom in Roaring Heights (where they originally resided). If you ever want to experience the Sims Lore, I highly recommend (just be warned, it does capture the tragic backstories of the most iconic sims)❣

The Estate Elevated is loosely based on Norma Desmond's mansion from Sunset Boulevard. (Hell, the household is based on the film too.) And that explains the weird eccentric style of the interior a lot.
In the movie, Norma's house is decorated with photos of herself when she was a famous silent film actress. The interior in general is very gaudy and screams washed-up crazy old silent film stars.

I love this world! 😍 I don't particularly agree with you about the references, there are so many cool stories. For example, the owner of the first house you've shown is Virginia Supine and she's in a relationship with Rita David-Welles, a clear reference to Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West. Rita's husband is also in an extramarital relationship with a man (Roaring Heights really love the gays) who is supposed to be based on Jay Gatsby.

i don't watch movies and im not american so i will definitely not get most of the references.. however i more meant the WAY they introduce the families and houses. IIRC, the world is kind of based off of Miami Beach and Coney Island so if you look at the barrier island and how it connects to the bigger island that's really close to how South Beach and Miami interrelate. The color palette is pulled straight from Miami. They reference buildings from both places in the exterior architecture. The bricks are where I think the Coney Island influence is coming in. Art Deco in NY, you're more likely to see brick buildings because it was a building material they had in abundance. (Also given that we don't have hurricanes or earthquakes it's a really good safe choice)

@@Rekowcski Also I noticed that a lot of the design decisions you were objecting to as not being Art Deco were totally 30s! I was more upset about the lack of radios. Every house would've had 1 in the living room and I think it's a missed opportunity to have had a couple 30s radios. I'm not sure there's any design school at play with the fridge placement, but having lived in apartments from that era, the fridge is often separate like that.

This is my absolute favorite Sims 3 world. My only complaint is exactly what you showed - it's absolutely necessary to redo the interiors. And I seriously hate building/buying. Like, I spent hours trying to find custom Art Deco homes just to avoid it 😂
Even given all that, my favorite thing is that they built lore into almost every single pre-made sim's homes. That one with the dungeon - the furniture store can be construed as her "front", since the owner, Donna Spinelli, is a mob boss. She's a spoof on the mob boss Juanita Spinelli.
Or like you saw in Beachfront Residence, the occupant is Virginia Supine, who is referencing the author Virginia Woolf. Hence the crazy amount of bookcases, lol. But even her living on the beach is significant, since in a darker turn, Virginia Woolf unalived herself by drowning herself in the river behind her house.
So while they're ugly as sin, if you look up who they're referencing, you'll see why they made some of the more...interesting choices. I mean, nothing excuses EA builds, lol. But I've never seen them put that much love into the lore as I saw in Roaring Heights.

This might explain some of their odd choices for colors a bit but I still feel like they executed wrong. I googled Art Deco colour schemes:
The colors of the art deco period are striking and bold. Colors are often paired or punctuated with high-shine silver, chrome, or black accents. Favorite colors of the era include bright and deep yellows, reds, greens, blues, and pinks.

So I know this is old, I still have to say this. First, as you complain about it a lot (which I get), I think they color the bathrooms just because they can. To show that it can be done and because bathrooms most of the time are just boring, so my guess they are trying to spice it up a bit. Also, I know 'green' bathrooms was a real thing 20 some odd years ago. Otherwise, I don't understand their choices either. However, I have to say that I hate that we have to "duck down" to see inside the houses in Roaring Heights. I'm used to zooming out a lot and I hate that I lose the house when I do. This means I don't play those lots at all, lol. Though I'm tempted to use that "Hidden Secret" lot now.
OH! And I can't get mad about the "bathroom" sink in the kitchen. I do it all the time to save money, its cheap and sometimes every little bit counts. Though I do "upgrade" to a kitchen sink once they get a bit of cash.
