Thank you for this! I just turned 31 and recently got back into skateboarding. I skated from 8th grade through college, but stopped about 5-6 years ago. I’m still able to roll and Ollie, but not really confidently. Shoves, 180s, and kickflips, which were easily done when I was at my peak of skating, now feel scary to attempt at this point. I just have to keep it up and get that confidence back.
Update : I landed a kickflip, a few pop shoves, and a few nollie shoves today. Definitely getting the confidence and feel back. Progress is good; I just gotta ease my way back.

I quit skateboarding when I was 15~16 years old, now I’m 29. I tried go back to skate couple years ago when I meet Braille channel, but it was really hard for 2 main reasons:
1- I’m out of shape, and skateboarding it’s a really tough workout. I still can do a Ollie, like Aaron said “it’s like ride a bicycle”, but I did it just few times and was completely tired.
2- All of my friends from this time doesn’t skate anymore, and skate alone in a garage isn’t fun. And It's not easy to get involved in a skatepark full of teenagers and kids. I feel like a grandpa there. lol
I’m trying workout more and I’ll try to go back to skateboarding again, soon.
If you guys have any tips for this, I take it.

    • @joshuaarcher1337
      @joshuaarcher1337 6 лет назад +1

Heitor Ferreira I feel ya. In my 40's and skatepark doesn't seem at first to be friendly to older guys. But I've seen a few dudes with a little gray in their beards actually carving it up pretty well. Maybe that's why I felt more comfortable, although I'm nowhere near that good. I feel like I'm a beginner sometimes because I'm so rusty. Best advice just get out there and skate because you enjoy it. Start easy and make slow small progressions. Stay out of people's way when possible, be humble and respectful, and no one will really notice you, or at least will leave you alone haha. Just skate and don't worry about what others think. You'll get better if you really enjoy it. And you'll forget all about everyone around you, other than just the stoke of being inspired.

12+ years ago my best friend and I quit skating. I was trying to grind, the back truck stalled straight up and nutted myself, I had a contusion and had to walk with crutches for a month. My gf bought me a board and I started up again a lil over a year ago then dropped out again until a few months ago. Bad habits come back with muscle memory but with all these different vids y'all make, they really do help with correcting yourself and learning different techniques and the more you know the better you'll become and the quicker you can understand and perform alot of tricks with enough dedication, courage, and determination/ patience of course. I can't thank you all enough at Braille for making these vids!!

Bought a Penny board for an incredible price last year and didn't get back into it until a couple of weeks ago. I had so much fun the other day that I've decided to try and skate every day. The hardest part for me getting back on a board after 10 years is the lack of feeling invincible. When I was 12 I was fearless because I had no concept of injuring myself. Now that I'm 25, hurting myself is a serious concern. If I broke my arm when I was 12, I may get out of some homework. If I break my arm now, I can't work :P.
All that being said, last year I came across your channel and bought SMS v1 and a new complete after not skating for over 10 years. Love it :)

I'm 26 and I've been back on a board for about a year now. There have been times when I've sprained my ankle and had to take time off work. and when I did I always felt embarrassed telling my boss it's because I was skateboarding XD
I can enjoy skating and not do anything out of my comfort zone and still have a fun session. The only problem is, one of the best things about skating is the progression and learning new tricks and pushing yourself. Which is something you just can't do when you can't risk getting an injury :(

I'm 13 and I've never learned how to ollie, I've technically been skateboarding since I was 9 or 10, but just cruising. I worked really hard on trying to ollie like a year or two ago but I fell and busted up my right side so I never tried again (amazing excuse right?), but now I REALLY want to get better at skating and I want to get good (like those cool kids on youtube good). My biggest problem is that everyone I've seen has started skating super young (like first ollie in kindergarten young), I feel like I'll never be as good as my friends and I'll be made fun of. I know I'm still super young but seriously some people just a few years older than me are making sponsor me videos.
EDIT: Okay after reading all the people saying "I'm 30 and learning how to skateboard" I feel dumb. Sorry lol.

Thank you for reigniting my passion as it is one of the best decisions I’ve made all year!

This video helps keep me motivated. Had a nasty sprain from HIKING, not skateboarding, and still recovering. I'm really antsy pantsy to get back on the board and do the tricks I landed before with confidence. Thanks for all of your hard work and all you do at Braille, Aaron and everybody! So happy that you guys launched the new website as well! It really helps people stay focused with all the points they earn and are able to learn on their own. I'm a 'Specialist' now ^_^ I didn't add my hometown because I don't really feel like I have a hometown, but also noticed that where I live now was not getting recognized but no worries. I am content not adding a hometown to my profile. Much love, Michelle =)

Woo I'm one of those people who got into skating because of Braille! I needed a new hobby that would get me out of the house and keep me motivated to get exercise. I started learning for the first time at 26 after several years of chronic illness and pain. I'm a slow learner, about 2 months in and haven't even learned to ollie yet lol, but it's a lot of fun and I wouldn't have gotten on a board at all without Aaron's tutorials :) I'm actually healthier than ever and my pain is much less because I've built back the strength and dexterity I lost from illness. I'm so glad I gave it a chance even though I was scared, because it's really not as dangerous as you think! If my disabled ass can do it, I think anyone can! ;)

28 from the UK, returned and loving it. One thing I think you should highlight, is the gentleness that you should slide your foot at, I kept kicking the board away because I didn't quite grasp the gentleness required.

I hadn't skateboarded since i graduated high school. I'm 33 now and started skating again cause of braille. I decided to work my way through S.M.S. Still pretty comfortable on my board and able to do some of the basics but S.M.S. really does help get back into it.

Some very good advice, thank you. I skated from age 12-16 then stopped. I picked it up again at 26 for 2 years. I am now 45 and want to start again. My 7 year boy has a cheap setup and I sometimes do ollies on it. The biggest struggle for me is muscle fatigue in my legs. I would say that doing body weight squats and Burpees will will help with cardio and muscle strength. Do them every day.

I just want to say that I really appreciate all the little things you mention when talking about getting back into skating. The little things make more of a difference(in my opinion) when it comes to technicality and correctly performing the trick. You really hit the nail on the head Aaron. As a single father getting back into skateboarding I really appreciate ALL of your input. It really does help! Thanks again Braille!!

I'm 24 now and started skating when I was 14. At about 18 I quit because I started to work full time and didn't have the extra time to get back on the board. At 14 when I started I was super heavy. About 270 lbs. The 1st summer I skated I dropped atleast 50 lbs. Now being 24 I gained weight back but always wanted to get back on the board. Well its been about a month and I've been skating almost daily. My kickflips are feeling and looking great and I'm even starting to land heelflips again after so so so long! As I got older I gained weight back and got back to about 250 lbs. In the last month skating I've dropped about 10 lbs again! Sadly I snapped my deck last night and hopefully I'll get one ordered soon because I'm definitely wishing to skate watching your videos!

How relevant!!! I haven’t skated since middle school, about 8 years ago. I’ve been skating lately and I’m pretty much back to where I was. Can ride ramps, drop in, and Ollie. But with Braille I’m progressing fast!!

Skated all growing up. Body kinda fell apart on me particularly the hips so i quit skating.. Quit sports quit doing reallt anything active due to pain. This led to a pretty bad pain killer addiction the last few years and i recently rediscovered my love for skateboarding. Braille was a huge influence on me deciding to try again and i was hooked all over again and its helped me on my path to getting clean and sober so much.... Its a hard battle that i will now struggle with the rest of my life im sure. But for now but being able to obsess over progressing my skating really helps not obsessing over a fix... "Skateboarding saves lives" haha

used to skate when i was 10-11ish. only knew how to ollie, shuv it, pop shuv it and board slide/50-50 on curbs. stopped skating cause i couldn’t commit to tricks and couldn’t get past the mental game …fast forward 10 years randomly got the urge to grab my board and go on a cruise with a homie. it sparked my interest again and a few days after that i ended up learning Kickflips, variel flips, fs 180’s, front shuvs, re learning pop shuvs and how to 50-50 on high ledges. its weird how after 10 years of not even riding a board, im able to learn at a way faster pace now

Started skating around the shopping center that my friend's game store is in. It's kind of out of the way and there's not as many people at it as my university, so I'm at least able to mitigate some of the social anxiety I feel being 31 and not super great at skating (yet).

Great video! I took a 30+ year break from skating. As of March, I will have been back on a board for 2 years now. I love that you say this is hard. Took me a year to learn to drop-in (7 foot half pipe is the biggest I've done.) and a year to get a backside slasher grind. I've now been working on 50/50 grinds and have pulled it once with going back in. A few slams and slow progress is key. I'm 46 and skate about 3 to 4 times a week at 250 pounds. If you all ever in Savannah, GA or make a trip to Kona Skate Park in Jacksonville, FL, please let me know. I would love to get a session in with you all.

I definitely still had some muscle memory. The only thing I could ever do reliably was backside 180s and it came back to me within 20 minutes or so on my board. I'm really happy I picked it back up. The "never give up" culture is so motivating for life in general. Love you guys!

I'm 25, about to be 26. I haven't skated since probably 2007 or 2008. I'm off work right now trying to figure out what a mass in my heart is that caused me to have a seizure while helping cover up a grave (heart beat too fast) but I've decided that hopefully once I get it figured out and taken care of I'm gonna get back into skating. The town I live in of course built a skate park a while after I talked to our mayor about it and then quit skating a year or two later but I think I'm gonna get back into it now for exercise and for fun. Now that I'm an adult I can go anywhere I want and can save to build a mini ramp or something lol.

Got back on the board a few days ago after years of pausing, because of all the great Braille videos, got a new board and underestimated the time it needs to break in. I pushed, lost balance and hit my forehead open on a metal pole 20 minutes after stepping on the board. Could have gone worse than just bleeding and a bruise but yeah, patience and a rather slower approach is key to get back to skateboarding I guess.
