Crazy how this movie single handedly got me into drums back in 2003. Lots of people make fun of it because of how easy the cadences are or how cheezy Nick Cannon's acting was, but there's no doubt that this movie influenced so many kids to start learning drums.

On the flip side, I was in the theater with my drumline friends laughing at how easy the parts were. Now, with age and wisdom, it's easy to make a case why the parts were easy. First, you had a lead who wasn't a drummer, and, secondly, exactly this. The parts were easy to learn.

I’m not a “race” guy, but the most racist think I used to experience was my corp style band friends trying to pick apart this movie and the cadence on the basis of technicality, years later I look back at these cadences and realize how funky they were. The grooves alone mixed in with the choreography is nasty… Further more realizing that all of the actors were from an Atlanta area high school (Southwest Dekalb) makes it much more impressive.

@EMCproductions I don't know if it has been said, but please tune your toms (single tenors) up when playingHBCU cadences. In HBCU percussion they are never tuned that low even when they are 16 floor toms played upright with a chest board. There tend to be just 2 exceptions for the size drum, and it would be played on your knee. That would Tennessee State and FAMU. For an example of the tuning I am talking about I would reference Tennessee State University "R.A.T. Patrol/The Authority", Alabama State University "TTB/FCC", or SCSU "Bongo Bothers". The exception for your tuning is the cadences you are playing, in my humble opinion, which are mostly from Morris Brown "Sticking Sensation" and FAMU "Z Phi 28". Mo Brown did have some kinda deep tenors(single toms), while FAMU has tenors(single tom) and bass toms. For upright tenor(single tenors with or without a chest board) tuning you can watch just about anyone else, but I prefer Jackson State "War & Thunder" and UAPB "2 Kold Krank".
Love the channel. Great work. Thanks for showcasing HBCU cadences and culture.

What's funny is... Paul Rennick tells a story about how he was approached with the idea for this movie. He just kinda blew it off and didn't pay them any attention when they pitched it. This movie could have been a completely different thing, but someone made it about a SWAC style drumline instead of a corps style. Crazy how he and a few others missed this opportunity. Great movie nonetheless though. It's really the only thing we have cinematically to represent marching band.

    • @tiyenin

Corps style just isn't compatible with the hurrdurr general audience that DL the movie ultimately reached. It would've wound up another pseudo-documentary like From the 50 Yard Line or The Band That Wouldn't Die, neither of which you've heard of because they were commercial flops.

When I was in SCV in 2011, we had a "documentary crew" come to one of our rehearsal camps. The director & staff were led to believe that they were making a real drum corps documentary. The crew pulled me out of a practice and starting asking me questions like "which girl is the hottest?" and "do people hook up during the season?" It turns they were trying to film some kind of "Real World but for drum corps" show. Word got back to the director and they got swiftly kicked out.

At least with the pieces I'm familiar with. As a 10th grader i would record a few of these style schools and work on every single part to teach out to my section. Sounded great and added visuals that matched what was recorded. That was nice til members of these various universities started showing up and showing the exact part as it should be. The cadences still sounded the same but became something completely different now knowing all the parts that aren't even heard at all but brings the soul into the pieces.

in my marching band i was the cymbals and for d and k, the first song, i was not given any music so i just made it up, i played on two and four until the basses came in, then i was like, alright time to get funky and slammed out the off beat crunches.
