I marched in both styles...in high school I was in a Corp style band and in college I was in a show style/traditional style band...there is difference not a huge difference but a difference. The difference that I noticed was how much show style/traditional style is taken so seriously...it is literally a sport and at times a fraternity at some times lol I even received a scholarship as well lol it’s a lot of work but it’s so much fun lol
I marched tri in middle school and went right to tenors as a freshman in high school. Eventually went on to play tenors at Suncoast Sound (old DCI corps) before they collapsed. They were a great starting point for what I would play later on.
Its all good Eric. I was in a corps style band in high school in Southeast Louisiana. Alot of other bands were show style, and we used to make fun of them all the time for being over the top or sloppy or over hyped. I really never learned to appreciate it until my senior year when I got to talk to other drum captains on why they enjoy that style. I still would rather play in a corps style band though.
I mean, its kinda hard to not run into any of the show style bands considering how much of a big deal they are down there. My dad actually marched with Edna Karr in the early 90s so he always tells me how much of a big deal it is in New Orleans. But, they do need to be clean and many of them are, while some need work. (I would know since I remember watching one of the parades this year at Mardi Gras and there were some high schools who need some cleaning up).
Oh yeah, in New Orleans there are some big show style bands. For parades they play and often do a lot of really cool visual stuff. Marching in a Mardi Gras parade isn’t like anything else. And while they’re not the cleanest, god damn they’re entertaining, and god knows the drunk parade watchers don’t know the difference. I’m not in a show style band but I really do appreciate it. It takes a lot to play and dance while marching five miles. Look up some videos if you want to know what I’m talking about. There are a ton of videos of marching bands in Mardi Gras parades.
Sample Text oh yeah I went to NOLA this year. I’ve been watching HBCU bands for about 2 years now and I kinda wish I went to JSU because I want to experience the culture first hand.
Corp style college bands in the south also give out large scholarships to march. It's not just show style bands and HCBUs. College band is HUGE down here no matter the style.
He was good, but it’s actually a tenor call out, and in drumline we do callouts all the time. Every section, including the horns and woodwinds have callouts towards another schools sections.
I hate that my band director is trying to turn us into a show band, we used to be competitive until I was a freshman. I don’t have a problem with show style bands, It’s just not what my school used to be 😐
I marched corps in high school but hung around a lot of folks in show bands at an HBCU. The differences between the two styles are WAY different as well as the skills required.
Dat mane actually has good form thats how single tenors are played check jackson state u war an thunder for a references and or cold steel drumline from NC A&T some schools even do leg tenors lets not have biases i marched both Corp style an showband an military we are musicians lets come together as one and chop it out word up from a retired percussionist 17 years🔥
Dude that’s really classy of you. Takes a cool dude to actually read the comments and try to fix it. Not gonna lie, I thought everything in that movie was made up but now I know that some of it is true. Thanks!
Much respect to you EMC for making a follow up video to your original Drumline Movie review. You're an awesome, honest, and humble person and thanks for that. Both ATL Drum Academy and I are interested sharing our HBCU band experience but I'll send a more detail DM via IG as mentioned in the video above. Luv your content and thanks for making vids we band nerds can geek out on!!!
I’m a show style marcher it seems this dude has the chops and definitely the form to play that tenor he’s just doing it too fast for some people to catch the form
Yep. I know nothing about show style marching/drumming, as I am a core marcher, but it sounded pretty damn good to me. He did seem to overplay a little bit, but again, I have no experience in that style, so I really don't know
Honestly, having done both styles at some point or another, I'd argue it's less about the historical demographics of the line and more about what the line is trying to do. Corps style is about pleasing judges through strong discipline and uniform technique, and show style (or, as I've taken to referring to it, collegiate style) is about pleasing the crowd by being super flashy. At the end of the day, though, they're still largely the same activity, and the objective is still to lay down clean beats for the enjoyment of others
Humble.... a trait many don’t have. As a graduate of an HBCU and member of a Grambling State University World Famed Marching band it’s much appreciated.
If only audience reaction was part of the score in WGI. My group would have top of that. Our show was so, so, so entertaining this year, and I'm still upset that the season is cancelled, lol. If everything went as planned, I would have just gotten back from Kentucky regionals either today or yesterday. Ugh, lol
So what we really need is a Drumline but it's a coming-of-age story about someone who went to school doing either show/chorus style drumming moving to a school that does the opposite style.
Eric please tell us more about the tiny tenors! I need a portable set like that! xD You should make it a like goal to do a video about the tiny tenors, and talk about if you made them like you did the extreme tenors :)

You should review/check out Norfolk State University's "Million Dollar Funk $quad" Drumline, Virginia State University's "Drum Phi" Drumline, or South Carolina State University's "Bongo Bros" drumline. Three of the cleanest and 🔥 drumlines that HBCU's have to offer with DCI level cadences.
Filipus Wisnumurti because he is critiquing/adding commentary while also possibly educating about certain show/music elements, it could fall into fair use.
I marched high school and teach now as a drum tech and both of those are very corps style oriented. I somehow stumbled upon a bunch of show style videos on Instagram and honestly they do be kinda fire doe 🔥 I would highly encourage people try and find some videos of them because they are hype af
There’s a bunch of RUclips channels that are dedicated to following HBCUs and high school show style bands that imitate them, such as ShowtimeWeb, Killa Kev Productions, Smash Time Productions, and MARCHINGBANDSPORT
If anything check out Beyonce's Coachella performance. She even said as much, bringing the excitement and fun of the HBCU 5th quarter as her concert. Hell even in her opening number the band is playing a number that I often hear FAMU play in the stands. Not to mention she had the band play after the percussion break, "Hay" by Crucial conflict, and Hay battles are a big part of the HBCU experience. Okay, so show style is as you said is synonymous with HBCUs. Many people have complaints about how the horns sound like crap drums not playing cleanly and to that I say yes, there are some bands out there for lack of better words, really should check how they play, but at the same time there are MANY MANY more bands that play cleanly and sound perfect. Which brings me to the overall sound. You have to understand that the bands are playing popular R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop music, meaning if you hear it on the radio, there is a good chance you will be able to recognize the tune and go dance in the stands. Add different dance moves and it's a style that is quite difficult to master.
It takes a lot to admit one's errors and mistakes, but you get points for trying to incorporate both sides of the coin. Show band and Corp band style have their niche in the marching community-as they both present the best for their fan base. Keep up the good work.
Hey Eric, Yeah i marched at Detroit Central High School where our style was collegiate and inspirated by Southern Colleges such as Tennessee State University, Florida A&M University marching band Etc and i also March for Thunderbird Drum Corps in Detroit as well. So as a snare drum and tenor drum player I've experienced both Styles and respect them Thanx for addressing both styles and keep up the good job my friend
Yay! Michigan gang! I have only participated in WGI groups before. This is my first time learning about show style drumming/marching, and I'm finding it quite interesting. Granted, I think I'll stick to DCI/WGI, lol. But it's still pretty neat to learn about other styles, especially as a huge percussionist
I finally saw this video. We're working our way back through your videos. Hated this movie but glad it inspired other kids to play or get better. We actually played in our band during my graduation. There weren't any problems... all of the seniors played each year during their graduation. The seniors would retake their seats with their fellow graduates for the final march out while the rest if the band played without us. Loved that I got to play one last time and at my graduation. ❤
7:07 We had challenges in my HS corps style band... The alternates could challenge for a spot every few weeks and if they won, the alternate would ‘shadow’ the person and then take the spot at the following Friday football game. This was early 2010’s... Go TX!
Im from Indiana and while visiting friends in Louisiana for Mardi gras I was struck by the differences of the marching bands in the parades. The dancing was something totally different from what I was used to. There doesnt seem like theres alot of info out there for show style bands. I've watched some videos but I've never found one where the culture of it is explained. That could be my shoddy search skills but it's understandable that you didnt know. I admire the fact that you admitted that you were wrong. Definetly need to find someone knowledgeable of show style to do a collab with that would be great.
Just follow a bunch of HBCU band channels. I learned through watching and seeing reactions of people in the comments on how they thought the band was (like, critiquing cause that’s how bandheads are (bandheads are what HBCU band fans are called))
I do want to add that my university Kansas State University is a corps style PWI that does challenges, but there's a chance that we are a very rare exception to that rule you listed about challenges. Great vid!

Heya, bud! Nice to see another UD guy. :) I was UD snare captain in *cough*1994*cough*. I was actually offered a scholarship to Delaware State University for marching band back in the day... I forget how much it was, but it would have covered a few classes at the very least. I wound up doing UD instead. :)
My highschool was a bit weird. We were a very small band, half wanted to act like show bands, the other half was more corp style lol it got interesting at times lol
Hey Eric, you need to collaborate with Ralph Nader of BYOS/Blue Devils fame regarding this. Ralph has experience with both styles...plus you two drumming together would be magical.
Actually he'd be better off playing with Alex Blake, he's one of the snares in the Black Fire Percussion clip. He marched tenors for BAC in 07' and BD 2008-2009.
I don’t mean to get pedantic here, but in this video you said there’s 2 types of marching bands: corps and show-style. But there’s actually a 3rd type which is especially popular in Texas, mostly East Texas. Military marching band. There’s even NAMMB which is the National Association of Military Marching Bands. I didn’t know military marching bands were a thing until I started teaching in Texas 8 years ago, but they’re a pretty big thing here. Anyway, I don’t mean to be the “well actually” guy, especially not on a video you made specifically to correct yourself! But I thought I’d just throw this in here! Thanks for everything you do.
Thanks for speaking up for military style bands! I grew up in east texas and got to do both military and corps style in high school and had fun experiencing both if those styles. There's more variety of music in the corps style although when we were military style our director started working in other types of music other than the traditional military marches.
I remember in my hometown there was one other school. Smaller than ours. Always beat us at football though. Hometown rival type of thing. They were a show style band. They had their sheet music attached to their instruments, jumped around like weirdos, and were tiny. Like the entire band was maybe 50 people. Ours on the other hand we were clean. Uniform. Precise. Loud. Aim for absolute perfection. If we even thought to bring sheet music we would run for miles the next practice. Our snare line had as many people as their entire drum line. Like to the point where it was like an adult picking on a little kid. No comparison between us. But those guys were having just as much if not even more fun when they came out onto the field and took up all 20 yards lol those guys could fucking party. It'd be cool to hang for a bit after the game and talk to them about our play styles and we'd jam for a bit... I will admit I enjoyed the feeling of awe whenever we marched out onto the field as the were coming off and just fucking demolishing them with our bigger band lol at the end of the day we are all just drumline assholes wanting to make loud noises with friends.
I had wondered if your review of the movie would get some heat. I’m proud of you for not sugar coating your mistakes and actually apologizing. A lot of young percussionist watch your videos and will hopefully learn from your mature decision to make things right. While I come from the same world of drumming that you do, I wish there would be more education on other styles of drumming to avoid what you are going through right now. You are not the first person I have heard be critical of that film for what are usually uninformed reasons. I think it’s a brilliant idea for you to bring someone in from the HBCU community who has experience in this genre of marching band. Not just for your own education, but for everyone else to learn about the difference between the two styles. Seems like your audience would benefit greatly (myself included!). Keep doing you, man! Way to check and adjust. :)
You could also title this "exactly how to make a mea culpa video" because it's a perfect example of how admitting a mistake or error isn't anything to be ashamed of.
I'm sorry but the random tenor interludes are hilarious. On a serious note though, it's always good when a person acknowledges when they're wrong or mistaken
Thank you for clearing it up but u didn’t have to take the original video. Much respect to you because I know I was on you about this topic. And you got some skills too.
It might also be cool to compare corps and show-style drumming with military bands and drumlines. All three are thriving down here in Texas. There were several competitions I took my group to that featured high-level achievement in all three styles! Texas UIL Region 9 is a killer area!
One more thing you got wrong was seniors playing at their own graduation. In my school in the middle of the graduation program all the Sr band members go up from their seats and played a feature piece in their cap and gown. Ours was a piece based on the score from How the West Was Won.
Theres a TV show you should check out that is a docudrama (kinda) showing all of the internal stuff behind the actual college marching band behind the a marching movie (don't remember which one) movie including showing all aspects of the auditions and playing, practice for all parts of the band, dancers, flag, and all. It's about a show style band and it's frankly dope. (It is a marching band show, not just drumline, but it should be checked out.) Its called marching orders
Um. One small thing. You said that some of the show-style lines do play cleanly. And you're right. That's so much easier when the heads are tuned that loose.... like at 2:23. If I didn't see them on a video I'd think it was a line of concert snares.
I hate this channel lowkey because it makes me feel not talented but it's FUNNY and SO FUCKING COOL, especially since my school has no proper marching band or drumline! So I think the show-style and DCI styles are both dope! It's all so fascinating! I am merely a concert percussionist--this all seems SO FUN! Thanks for the knowledge!
I’m mostly used to corps style and WGI style drumming and had never really heard of show style bands when I watched the movie a few months ago. A lot of it seemed weird to me, but now I know that it’s an entirely different style from corps style marching
It would be cool if you had a show style drummer with you in your next video. I'm a show style snare and getting viewpoints from both styles would be awesome. Great vids! Great chops!
I was challenged in middle school for second spot on tenors we only had drum line. I lost but to my defense I don’t know how to read music and I never practiced or tried to learn beyond what we were taught. I did it for extracurricular activities. After middle school I went a core band school that did not play anything good... so I never joined the band. I definitely love show bands
Shucks, I just learned something about PWI bands watching this👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I appreciate your follow up and honest opinion 😊 and I didn't even watch the 1st video. I felt the same way you did about PWI bands, but I really like DCI better. At the end it's all about what you like. However, the musicians are all talented in their own right. I recently watched your NFL drumlines and between both videos it is clear to me you really no what your talking about 🤔👍🏼. Looking forward to Future videos and I recommend that you cover both and critique the entire band? Example, Ohio State vs Southern, field performance, song accuracy, visuals just to name a few.
Your criticism of the bad aspects of the movie are totally valid imo, and I'd hate to see it go away because some people called you out about the stuff you were ignorant on.
Mr. Carr, how do you feel about electronics in the marching arts? I play bass guitar for my schools Indoor and (hopefully upcoming) outdoor marching based ensembles. I would like to know a professional opinion on them.
As a H.B.C.U. ALUMNI, I certainly appreciate your mature stance to correct your position on the movie DRUMLINE. I think what you have done here is a BLUE PRINT to even heal race relations in our nation, as much of racism has to do with ignorance rather than pure hatred, which we have experienced the pure hatred kind as well. I'd be interested in taking you on a tour of some of the HBCU's MARCHING BANDS, once this Coronavirus thing subsides, so you can get a thorough immersion into our world and actually witness the level of commitment and dedication we have to the DRUMLINE and BAND. Sample Text oh yeah I went to NOLA this year. I’ve been watching HBCU bands for about 2 years now and I kinda wish I went to JSU because I want to experience the culture first hand.
What band?
@@ethannaquin3409 Slidell High then SELU
Corp style college bands in the south also give out large scholarships to march. It's not just show style bands and HCBUs. College band is HUGE down here no matter the style.
Most mature and honest youtube i know. I love ya dude
Except for all the dick jokes lol
He was good, but it’s actually a tenor call out, and in drumline we do callouts all the time. Every section, including the horns and woodwinds have callouts towards another schools sections.
I hate that my band director is trying to turn us into a show band, we used to be competitive until I was a freshman. I don’t have a problem with show style bands, It’s just not what my school used to be 😐
Mr. Cagna bro what ? Y’all band director doing y’all a huge favor
409AllStarBand I’m more of a dci kinda guy, but I honestly don’t mind him doing that because I’m in drumline and he won’t have us March like that
What school are you at?
Cedric Rucker Lavergne high, in Tennessee
pearlsnaredrummer77 yeah I planned on doing that, I think show style bands are more fun to be around
Thanks!
As someone who was a percussionist and marched in an HBCU Marching Band I really appreciate this Video.
Exactly, more like Southern University just a little faster and wilder sticking
You do know he's a member of the United States Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps? He's an active duty Marine and a teacher.
Yes but he did say he didn’t know any thing about show style marching
Oh
I knew MD would be brought in the mix one way or the other. Im proud to have marched in the legion.00-04
Eric please tell us more about the tiny tenors! I need a portable set like that! xD You should make it a like goal to do a video about the tiny tenors, and talk about if you made them like you did the extreme tenors :)
They’re just octobans set up and tuned like tenors.
So happy to see my "Gifts" have found a place in the background of your videos! And I cannot wait to see the modified video!!! I'll be FAMOUS!!!! (and I'll probably share the revised video with all my family and friends on Facebook!!! so that you can get closer to your 100K subscribers!!!) 😘🥰😍😉
Did you do this to get attention and fame?
I can appreciate this video so much more. You corrected your mistake and I applaud that level of humility. Good stuff. And shout out to my dawg Antoine Gibson for the reaction video to the original reaction video!
You are a class act Eric. Your humility and positivity are responsible and respectful. I am genuinely impressed. Honestly, thank you.
I see the photo in the background I took of you at The Sunset Parade at The Lincoln Memorial last summer.
Once in a lifetime.
SEMPER FI‼️🍻
You should do a series we’re you react to dci/wgi shows!
Unfortunately a video like that will get copyright strike from flomarching
Filipus Wisnumurti Adam tan’s been doing it
@@FilipusWisnumurti There have been other people who have been doing it, and they have been fine
Having did showstyle and drum corps style I enjoy both quite well
Thanks for the shout out... Virginia State University Drumline.
Having done both, I highly respect both. However, corps style band was more fun and left me feeling more accomplished
I watched a Norfolk State video a few days ago and the line was like clones moving in perfect unison. It was an entrance video. So clean.
Go TX!
That must have felt like shit to the person who got their spot taken 😂. Imagine getting beaten and then having to teach who beat you your own drill.
EnchantedGamer9 Yep. People had to stay on top of their game (music memorized, equipment ready to go, good grades, etc).
To add on, I found the Wikipedia article about marching bands informative
It’s all about the recovery 👍
I do want to add that my university Kansas State University is a corps style PWI that does challenges, but there's a chance that we are a very rare exception to that rule you listed about challenges. Great vid!
Damn this may be the best apology video not this whole website
Me *sees EMC tore apart Drumline*
Me: No way, he must've made some errors here.
*doesn't watch original*
Me, weeks later: *sees "I was wrong about this movie*
Me: Haaaaaa
Following along with Tyler De Tran is me drumming on Pringle cans lol
Hey Eric, you need to collaborate with Ralph Nader of BYOS/Blue Devils fame regarding this. Ralph has experience with both styles...plus you two drumming together would be magical.
Actually he'd be better off playing with Alex Blake, he's one of the snares in the Black Fire Percussion clip. He marched tenors for BAC in 07' and BD 2008-2009.
I was very confused as to what show style drumming has to do with the Green Party for a sec.
On another note I do respect you for educating yourself because these guys are REALLY talented 💯🤙🏾
Robert McWhorter Very cool! What school was that?
maybe add "part 1" to the end of that video's title and "part 2" to this one
edit: ok
Atlanta A&T is based off FAMU. The musical arrangements and choreography are all FAMU.
3:51
It sounds like a cartoon that’s trying not to fall
React to the real North Carolina A&T drum line
Hey Eric where did you get those tiny tenors
You could also title this "exactly how to make a mea culpa video" because it's a perfect example of how admitting a mistake or error isn't anything to be ashamed of.
Okay 1 appreciate your effort
2 at 2:24 where u said Prairie View A&M University you're wrong that was Alabama A&M University
Coming from someone who is very familiar with both styles you handled this really really well
I'm sorry but the random tenor interludes are hilarious. On a serious note though, it's always good when a person acknowledges when they're wrong or mistaken
Thank you for clearing it up but u didn’t have to take the original video. Much respect to you because I know I was on you about this topic. And you got some skills too.
Top tier vid, keep it up. New camera? Quality is very good

"They actually take band just as seriously as the sports teams"
Cries in Louisiana
Surprised that you didn’t use footage from NC A&T at DCI Night Beat 2019
It might also be cool to compare corps and show-style drumming with military bands and drumlines. All three are thriving down here in Texas. There were several competitions I took my group to that featured high-level achievement in all three styles! Texas UIL Region 9 is a killer area!
One more thing you got wrong was seniors playing at their own graduation. In my school in the middle of the graduation program all the Sr band members go up from their seats and played a feature piece in their cap and gown. Ours was a piece based on the score from How the West Was Won.
Bruhh I was actually using some of the licks and warmups you had in that video to play and practice before the season starts. RIP
Dat mane on tenor smackin🔥
Thank you for being big enough to admit being misinformed and incorrect. As an HBCU alum(PVAMU) i appreciate it.
I have no idea why I watch your videos I play trumpet 🤣🤣
It would be cool if you had a show style drummer with you in your next video. I'm a show style snare and getting viewpoints from both styles would be awesome. Great vids! Great chops!
My school was in the bonus features 😔🤚🏼also I experienced physical pain when you said “de CALB”
Yesssir . MDFS for the first HBCU clips 👏🏽🔥🔰
You should make a tenor but it’s only snare drums. Or just bass drums?
Where can I get some tiny tenors
This was really cool of you to do! I definitely didn’t know about the two different styles before.
The community college I went to, Jones College (formerly JCJC), gives out full-ride scholarships to band members.
O T he is talking about hbcu
@@mrjojo1315 I know, that's why I said PWI bands. It's all good 👍
Your criticism of the bad aspects of the movie are totally valid imo, and I'd hate to see it go away because some people called you out about the stuff you were ignorant on.
And believe me, most of our DRUMLINES are super clean, and can play with anyone in the world. I'll post some schools here for you to research and if you want to go to the schools, I'd be honored to accompany you. Thanks again for being a MAN!!
