I love your videos Dark space! Keep up the great work as always
it sounds like 171 is struggling from the age old story of a developer who's way too in over their head. I still personally think no indie developer should and could ever realistically beat any GTA game past 3 and/or SA in scope, size, etc, but that's the thing: GTA 3 and *especially* San Andreas are still extremely well regarded to this day. Sure, if you bought San Andreas by itself for 60 dollars nowadays you'd feel cheated, but 30 bucks or less? 20 bucks? Sounds like a far more realistic target. Maybe call it a ps2 throwback.
But nooooo, the first work of a team of 7 needs to *DIRECTLY* compete with GTA 5 and be in the same level
youre absolutely right, quite frankly they could even solve a large portion of their optimization issues just by running a vertex reduction modifier on all their assets, stick with the lowpoly look and focus on online and campaign features for a year. theyd probably end up with a solid early access title that beats out sa and 3 with modernized controls and features.
Nowadays I would buy the OG GTASA (RenderWare version not the stupid Unreal Engine version) for 25 bucks...
Honestly San Andreas is the game that I love the most so if they were able to strive for that simply with updated graphics set in Sao Paulo I'd be more than content
An SA style game with a few more modern features and higher res textures would be amazing. I'd buy that all day if it was fun
The idea that Rockstar bought Euphoria & simply plopped it into their game is laughable. They didn't just purchase Euphoria, they paid for engineers from Natural Motion to come & properly integrate it into the Rage engine. That's the difference, sure they didn't create Euphoria from scratch, but they certainly put in the leg work to get it integrated seamlessly.

Rockstar also used renderware and used common sound affects when making the real Definitive Edition back in the day. An example of this is the camera sound affect in San Andreas. The reason why nobody complains about that is because that makes up like 1% of the game. Everything else is theirs.
Yep
Also, Renderware is a game engine, not a asset pack. Think of a game engine being like a blank canvas, a bought asset would be a like buying a finished painting and slapping on top of your canvas, instead of painting it yourself
@@k_kubes You're right. I'm just saying that its not uncommon for game studios to share things like game engines. As long as they still have original stuff and make a good story then it doesn't matter.
@@StuartLugsden The real complaints against the 171 devs are about their blatant lies.

The "Mod plagiarism" accusations against Junior have been proven false long ago, in fact, to this day, there are mods in GTAForums that have been put toghether with chunks of older Junior or other MixMods users mods.
Look, I grew in GTAForums, I even learned english there, but some moderators and a few of the OG's are quite disconnected from reality, they seem to live in a bubble of self reaffirmation that makes them oblivious from any reality or situation other than the one they want to believe in.
Just to be clear, this is not the general mindset, but unfortunately a small part of the community that holds a big part of the power.
It's kind of sad of that happening to Junior_Djjr, I mean, he's one of greatest (if not the greatest) modders our country have, and it's a really sad thing that GTAForums - one of the oldest and largest of all modding forums - can sometimes be a toxic and really hostile place, even if the majority of the users aren't like that. In Junior's case, the admin who banned him, shared lies and false information about the "plagiarism" that Junior supposedly did. Plus, he banned users who defended Junior, in any ways.
They’re are kind of stuck up over there, shame

If slapping a multiplayer mode on a janky open world game was enough, APB reloaded would have been a great sucess.
Good point. Rp wasnt as big then though, right?
@@DarkSpaceStudios RP is still niche. The thing about APB tho? The character and vehicle customization back then was pretty good, but everything else was janky, clunky, a bugfest, the game direction was shit, driving physics sucked. P2W. They(Beta Games) can't even stabilize a flipped asset, imagine implementing netcode
I could delve into why they can't, but it is basically game direction
The whole thing with BBG can be summed up in one sentence:

This is a very necessary video, respect from Brazil. We are not all braindead who defend scams like this!
I'm also brazilian but i'll speak in english cuz most of the audience here are english-speakers.
It really is unfortunate that most brazilians want to justify that the game they bought is good because "it's brazilian" or "it's still on alpha". And continue to make up lies about junior. I am Brazilian and since i saw this game for the first time, my thoughts and some friends were that this would be an asset flip mess, this guys are a bad example of video game developers in Brazil, please look up other Brazilian games such as Spark the electric jester, Chroma Squad, Blazing Chrome, Dandara, Knights of Pen & Paper and others, these are small but professional, competent devs, and this is the actual point of industry here in the country, small indie dev teams, capable of delivering great products and with a great future ahead of them.

Same.
The idea of 3D open-world GTA-like video games is already mind-boggling for such a small team. It is not unachievable, but not realistic for their first game. They could've made small indie games with a Brazilian theme, like side-scrolling or top-down games, and so on. Sure, it might not make a big impact, but the hope is that it will pave the way and generate revenue while they work on bigger projects in the future.
A lot of people are using the argument that their low budget should make it clear for the buyers that it's going to be small in scope.
Not everyone has deep knowledge about game dev. If something is promised, people will expect that to be created. A lot has been promised and with their wording a lot more has been implied. If they were transparent about their ability from the beginning no-one would be upset.
Love your production quality, it is one of the best out there. You always get the point across with these!
NGL, I completely agree about the online roleplay aspect. Modders alone could do so much for their own servers.
GTA roleplay servers have huge map changes sometimes (mostly added buildings, added trees, props, etc) but they also include custom scripts for interactions (i.e. bank robbing, npc shops, etc).
This game for sure has potential.
I'm from Brazil, and what I can say about the game is that the map is well-made but of course, this was made by people that live here, the rest is half-baked or worse

It sort of reminds me of the situation with _Titanic: Honor & Glory_ where their former project leader had set way too lofty goals for such an upstart team who is yet to get financial backing, but backpedalled with it when they realised it's too big of a pill to swallow, instead going with the objective of making a virtual museum at least for the time being.
The main difference is that most if not all of the assets they have were their own doing and not just a quick marketplace flip like so many others.
I don't really see the comparison other than both teams being in over their heads. It's true that the TH&G team set out with unrealistic expectations; not only did they want to completely recreate the Titanic, and make the entirety of the ship explorable, but they also wanted to fully animate the sinking, and create an entire voice acted campaign, with missions, and unique NPC's (They also spent bunch of time and resources modeling Southhampton in immense detail...)
However, their game is far from an asset flip. They're modeling the entire ship from scratch using photographs, and blueprints taken from the real construction of the Titanic. Yes, they're a small team with minimum backing like the devs of 171, but I'd argue the H&G team knows significantly more about game development
People called me all kind of names when I said that the map was hilarious small and disappointing for a 10 years old project.
I was at least expecting something small but condensed and detailed like Los Santos from GTA San Andreas.
The map is like 10% of that, it's just ridiculous.
You don't even need to worry, because it is disappointing. Even more if you consider that most of the game was made using assets, and because of it they would have more time to make a bigger map.
@@AnekoGT its really insane, besides the map, almost everything else on the game is a asset flip, so why is it still so little after 10 years?
And yes, it does nails what a brazilian low-end neighborhood looks like, they got the vibes just right, but the size of it is just pathetic.
How did they even had the courage to release this as a pre-alpha is beyond me.
Los Santos from GTA SA is condensed and detailed? LOL.
@@gabrielmartines3510 yes, it is. Specially by 2004 standards.
If this game map was like that, I could at least excuse some of the controversy surrounding this game because I could see the argument that most of their resources went to making the game map.
But the map of 171 is like only the Grove Street neighborhood of GTA SA, and after 10 years this is what they came up with.
Like I said, I wouldn't even release this as a pre-alpha, given how pathetic it is.

While buying assets doesnt reduce the value of the product, I cant help but think "well thats kind of cheap" when I hear the same punch.mp4 that every form of media uses. Yes, you know the one I'm talking about. I love the tv show Primal, but I heard the same punch sound effect that I've been hearing for decades (even on stuff like stick animation on youtube) and I couldnt help but laugh. I don't know, I think the problem is not the assets, but if you take something from somewhere, and do that over and over again, and you cant mask it well then it becomes too noticeable and it can break immersion.
It happens with generic sounds for me. Opening doors, footsteps, gun sounds... Like you gotta be careful with what you use
Yeah, everytime I hear morrowind's door sound or rollercoaster tycoons kids on a tv show I go "huh.... Really"
Breaks immersion instantly
This autoplayed for me and I was disappointed that it wasn’t a part 2, then I checked in further and realized it was. Great work!
I wish both parties great success. I really do. Hopefully they can have a team to iron out everything and get this thing going. Been following for a while
Man this video is really well made. Its like its made by a company.
Another amazing deep dive into a subject I didn't know anything about but now, upon reaching the end of the video I feel like a specialist in the matter
This video and part 1 explain the whole situation very well, and with great video editing. I really hope that all controversy and misinterpretations go away, but there will always be people who refuse to accept the truth
Sadly true
You can go and buy all those assets and you won't have a game. Most of the cost is development hours, not assets.
It's a weird expectation of some people that small team with little bit of money can create everything from scratch without using existing assets.
If this game has Brazilian developers then it's Brazilian game, no matter what assets they used.
Anyone expecting GTA quality from this game has lost their mind.
You did an amazing putting thr 2 parts together ❤
PART 2 ALREADY??! Nice!
Oh no. OH NO. Go as low in polycount as you can without the shape of the object being compromised, that many vertices are not needed and the fact that there is no LOD makes things so much worse... This is basic game design and even I as just a gamer know that objects without LOD or with high polycounts will reduce game performance. That's why I make sure when downloading hair for sims that the hairstyles are 5000 polys or less.
Yeah if I'm giving like $50,000 to someone to do something,I'd like that person to inform me if they are not at all competent enough to that thing
Agreed!
Wait just saw part 1 and part 2 is here nice
The only brazilian thing I see on this game is the environment, yeah that's pretty much it. All the rest are just assets created by other people.
If they want to release the game early 2024, it's better not think about making a map expansion in the scale of the city of São Paulo. This place is huge (the biggest city of the entire country) even tho they wouldn't make a 1:1 scale, it still would certainly be something compared to Los Santos or some island on GTA 4.
ehhh i dont think it'd compete with liberty city let alone los santos
They straight up said they want to make a whole state for this game, which is insanity, they didn't even made a whole city.
As a beginner 3D artist (when I put the time in) I used pre made assets to make my first 'original' scene. Otherwise I'd have had to have made and sculpted a person and a snowtrack vehicle. I have heard that using pre made assets is not to be frowned at but when a game is nothing but pre made assets implemented badly that's where it is a problem I suppose. Smaller game makers must likely use a lot of pre made assets just to save all that time. Unless they are adamant that they make everything themselves and then put in the years to make it all. That's why there's experts at different aspects of 3D, it's for a good reason.
Here is my take;
Sure, a massive open world game requires a lot of work. I understand that some of these must be outsurced. My problem here is that, people can easily ask and pay for custom made assets made for 171 in particular. Tasteful asset comissions is a thing. I would understand what they did if all the assets bought was placeholders in order to produce a vertical slice of the game.
Since their plans have not been openly shared, Im unsure how to feel about this. Its an interesting dance of "who is in the right". Morally, I'd say the the devs are inexperienced and learning the ropes the hard way. This project can go either way as it stands now.
would this be another ‘no mans sky’ situation again?

Welcome to the new age of videogames, where everything is prefabricated instead of made from scratch, an "alpha" (demo) that you have to buy for 30$ and the team for a AAA game is no more than 7 developers who have never wrote a single line of code. Also 0 optimization, ridiculous time spent and money sucked out of people....
Is this what the future holds for us? Because I want none of it. I want the old days back, where you buy what you get, where you get a free demo that has little to no bugs, fair optimization, teams with reasonable amount of people, you need AT LEAST 100 people to work on a AAA game, when games took only 1 to 2 years to be made instead of a whole decade, and they were made FROM SCRATCH.
This game does not deserve to succeed, because that would encourage bad behavior and show people that anyone with 2 hands and 2 braincells can start scamming people by making empty promises and buying 40$ packs when they ask for 50k$ of funding. Game takes pride on being completely brazilian, when everything is bought and made from gringos? Stop making me laugh.
Back then you need a freaking Phd in computer science to make games. Nowadays anyone can just buy some game templates and call it a day. Which definitely, the risk of game development being accessible to everyone.

Just a comment about your point of games taking longer to get launched.
That is mostly due to graphics, that got exponentially better during the last 20 years, which are one of the hardest parts to make. 3D modelling is no easy shit.
They are not trying to be a Gta clone, their trying to be Gta's competitor. Like how Saints Row 1 and 2 used to be Rockstars competitors at the time of 2006 - 2008. but because how Gta fanboys kept complaining saying "eeahh stop copying Rockstar you Gta clone a-holes" Over and over to the point Volition just pretty much got tired of it and they decide to completely change the entire game franchise with the 3rd, 4th and reboot. I want this game to succeed but they need more money to hire more employees just for a chance to be beat some of rockstars old Gta games. Best of luck to them.

Having a different language for names isn't necessarily a bad thing, but because naming conventions are a big problem in programming to prevent confusion, it should be avoided.
To the multiplayer part, is in my eyes unreachable. Making a proper working multiplayer game is notoriously difficult and considering they have made this within twelve years. I doubt multiplayer will ever be a thing.
Seems to me like they didn't completely understand how gta works, its basically a huge feat of optimization, they don't need to load all the collision polygons if no one is there or high def textures for objects that are far. What they should be doing now is reducing their scope and solidify the project. Also re work the bases, Im sure that they re worked their engine for years, but that is open world for you. I think that a clone of the most expensive game in history is a terrible idea for a first game, they should have started with bejeweled or a board game, maybe a gta 1 clone if they are really good and really motivated, also if they have deep understanding of how the game works.

The vicious cycle of GTA Online are as follow:
- Play GTA Online
- It's tedious and grindy
- Log off
- Browse Steam to find similar games
- 2 choices, Saints Row 2 and 3
- Saints Row 2, old, janky, poorly optimize, look worse than its contemporary, you've probably play it a hundred time already
Saints Row 3, 12 years old, arguably worse than 2, you've probably play it a hundred time too
- Realize there're nothing else
- Repeat

Project of this scale for a new team is a big challenge, and all you can do is just criticize and call it scam. At the end it will be a 7.0 - 7.5 project, and the team will have a lot of knowledge to create the next game with much better quality. While all these dudes with lack of talent keep making these negative videos just to get a bunch of views.
Haters gonna hate, just cause they want
Sounds like me when I was young. Put everything on one map, but how do I make the game run smoothly? It wasn't smooth until I realized everything is done individually. But how do I make it disappear? Or how to create low poly versions of the same asset? That was the question at the time.
They should grab on the map they've, separate buildings as a unique entity, and create low poly versions only seen from long distances. Distance matters, especially when it comes to textures at certain distances.
Quick with it!
Awesome
That quickly already damn
Honestly, I never considered 171 as a competitor to GTA. It always looked a bit janky to me and i have little experience with game development (about 1 year). I can only imagine how it looked like to rockstar lmao
When I look at the movment and car physics it reminds me of Russian game big city online and yes as the name suggests it Is online and that game is free and to my knowledge they did not do fundraisers
Lol I thought this was a re-upload of part 1 not a part 2, not that I mind 😂
Wait, wait, wait. They are selling this for 30 dollars? Bro here they were selling it for 50 reais the last time I saw, and 30 dollars is far from being 50 reais. It would be around 150 reais.
Regional pricing isn't a new thing
If you look at the code from FERNBUS a German bus driving simulation game, it is as well 90% made on top of bought assets, only the licensed Busses are actually stuff they did, and the map itself, but even the map itself is made using a bought asset. 😆 It is hard today to day how much of a game should be a bought asset or not 😕
1 7 1 is gotta be the CaveiraGames of Game Dev world.
I feel like people are being overly critical of these guys. The most sketchy part of this whole story really is just the crowdfunding. Maybe they should have been more transparent about using assets, but combining such a large variety of assets into one cohesive game is still a huge task, and what they've got so far is fairly impressive. I completely disagree with calling this an asset flip. There are plenty of asset flips on Steam, and they all have something in common; picking a few cheap/free assets and throwing them together as a "game" as quickly as possible and selling it before moving onto the next one. Spending years on one "asset flip" goes against everything that an asset flip is. It's supposed to be a quick buck, not a decade long project. Crowdfunding is always risky for those investing, unless the company has an already proven track record of delivering what they promise. I struggle to believe that anyone who invested in this genuinely believed that 7 guys were going to make every single aspect of the game from scratch.
I dunno man, feels unfair to judge them so harshly. Personally, I'm rooting for them!
Trying to make a "modern" game in this scale without experience, and with a small crew, is a bit too ambitious I think.
For a big project like this, developers should try doing some games with more simplistic but well made/tweaked graphics and physics, systems and assets. Something that looks and feels like a PS2 or even a (good looking/good physics.. having) PS1 game. Not like an "indie" title that wants to be "retro" to be "cool and nostalgic", but just to be realistic with what you can achieve.
I myself wanted to try it out, see if I can do something cool, a nice retro looking racing game, simple PS1 graphics, but more like Gran Turismo/NFS and less "Test Drive 6", if you guys know what I mean. I just never tried anything because now that I have a job, I have some cash, have a good PC, but I just don't have much time anymore, and have recently been in a deep depression (due to some issues not pertaining to the current subject), that makes me barely even do things I used to enjoy, like watching a movie/series, playing a game, even old ones I liked, from when they were good/not full of lootboxes and FOMO bullshit.
Also, I wanted to mention the irony or whatever this is, of the game's name. Don't know if the number 171 means anything in other countries, but here in Brazil, the number they used, related to crime, like "Grand Theft Auto"... ..."171"...
...means "embezzlement/fraud", and can be used to call someone a liar.
They should just use Max Payne 3 map. At least as a reference.
I bought this game for 11 dollars. That was the best rate for it right now. For the future? Who can say? I hope they can get this right.
Heres the thing, they copy pasted all and took the money
Sure, they were dishonest and didn’t make 90% of the game, but it’s still kind of refreshing to see a GTA-like game in somewhere other than California or New York for once.
Sleeping Dogs is the game you're looking for.
As a standalone game developer, writing game code/naming variables in another language shows that they have way too little knowledge of coding for such a game
Saw on a different video they'll migrate to UE5. Expect more delays (and more pledging...)
23:11 Nobody saw this shot(
Doesn't UE 5 handle LODs automatically using Nanite?
If enabled, yes. They probably don't have this enabled.
@@DarkSpaceStudios it's shocking that they've cut corners to make this game, but forgot to enable the basic, the most simple thing that'll optimise their game.
@@lucifer_69960 1080p is the max
They aren't using UE 5
UE 5 is new, they started this 10 years ago. You cannot just switch to 5 at a snap.
Well. Atleast they really about that 171 life. 😂
Complaining about problems that don't exist... There's nothing dishonest or criminal.
There was no promise that everything would be made from scratch. The game is being assembled as promised.
Ayo i watched part 1 like 1 hour ago
Also i should have replied as my other main account but i cant for a reason i will get it back soon
does 171 even have a story?
Character Name is Nicolau
Whoo, how exciting.
No, it's literally 30 minutes of content at max, all sandbox activities
@@plaguedoctorjamespainshe6009 figured that.
@@hikoplays you can experience everything and get steam's refund with 1 and a half hour to spare lol
👌🏼👌🏼🔥🔥
3:10 Dark Space, you should have compared it to GTA TRILOGY remaster that was done by AI!
This happens when amateurs severely underestimate the complexity of software engineering. I've done the same. They don't understand that to get something sort-of working is not incredibly hard but to make it optimised and polished takes a lot of effort and time. Writing accents and mixing Portuguese with English is bad alone but they also use spaces in the dict key field while the rest uses underscored. Total amateur hour and laziness.
Also, selling an alpha? Welcome to 2020s I guess. Back in my day, even betas were released free with limited maps. Selling a buggy mess alpha? right...

oh my god
This whole drama is simply nonsense. Good to see that most of people are noticing that.
Anyway, i was expecting the video to be an direct attack to BGG. It wanst, you were more imparcial than the first one. Kudos to you. There some good info here.
Just one correction: the game is not an asseflip. Theres a lot of features coded by them, also the 3d modeling are made by them.
So they filled in the 1% that wasn't a flip? Kudos to them, I guess.
"The game is not an asset flip"
At least 90% of it is, if you remove everything in this game that is a flip, all that would be left is the game map, the vehicles(that wouldn't be drivable because their handling files also is a flip) and some character models.
@@pedinhuh16 wrong.
If you remove the assets, hoy would have the AI, THE ped interaction, tunning system and all the 3d modeling.
Less than 20% of the game is made by assets.
What's complicated is telling the difference between the voices in this video.
They are different RUclipsrs too. I don't think it's that hard to tell the difference.
@@TurboLight agree, still complicated tho
Hmmm for me it seems like they didnt really know what they want to make, they wanted open world gta like style game and they bought pre made assets and just thrown all of this in the bucket and do Nothing more
A triangle has 3 vertices..
I think BGG's core problem is that they're trying to compete with GTA 5 in the first place, a game where millions of dollars was invested in it.
Did you ever make a game before though?
I think this whole thing is a nothing-burger.

Dreams are good, but people need to see the limit too, its not like a single human can travel the entire universe alone, or build a city with only two walls.
They should prolly make the game moddable and add multiplayer, true
