    #TheTruthAbout171
You're watching Part 1 of my two part series where we investigate the Brazilian Developer Beta Games Group's game "171." 171 is a "GTA competitor" game set in Brazil. The game was created with the support of backers on a Brazilian Kickstarter site, where funds reached 50,000 US Dollars. But what were these backers really buying?

It simply has questionable details surrounding its fundraiser's and development. I think there is a strong future in the game if they take the right steps moving forward.

I think that there's a good bit of merit to just 7 people who didn't even know game development to start a project like this and compile it to be as big as it is. But yes, they absolutely should've been transparent about it. I'm sure plenty of people would have understood it if they just said "Since we are not experienced developers, we will be using assets to our favor while spending time and money donated to learn about how to make this project in a way that matches our vision" - or something.

I'm Brazilian and I know everyone involved building this game.
One thing is for sure, they had tested their skills before, the problem with the game that is happening in Brazil is how they reached the public.
First, the game is tainted by the time and money they have already received. I had the opportunity to play it pre-Alpha and I'm not going to lie, it changed a lot of things but for a group that are said to be GOOD programmers (that's what they came to say) the game still sucks.

      @monkitoredpill Год назад +25

@@meterindo I totally disagree. this being 6 people developing a game, and with a collective investment of people who helped them to bring a playable version. they managed to bring it and it's very beautiful. the game has problems only in optimization, this point is critical, but ACCEPTABLE, as it is still being developed.
you criticize in a childish and imbecile way, because it makes no sense to raise as a reason something that is not even finished, and putting the "lack of transparency" as an error. no indie game in the world advertised where it was spending its money.
they managed to keep the little they collected for 2 years of development, if you were honest and characterful people, they managed in less than 10 seconds to assimilate that this money collected by them would not take even 5 months if they had kicked the bucket and had opted for pay a programmer, which is extremely expensive, to fax basic mechanics from scratch.
any honest person with a minimum of empathy knows that every indie game starts with the use of assets, and with more advanced development time and with the entry of money from sales, they start to use their own mechanics.
the movement mechanics, for example, it's disloyal for the guy to put it as "he lied and bought an asset" even though the team has already said that they will make the original movements of all NPCs using MOCAP. they just haven't done it yet because it's alpha version, the use of mocap will only be useful when creating the movements and CUTSCENES of the story mode. it wouldn't make sense to spend time with mocap now just to create character movement, as they are implementing what will be used until the final version. just like an artist, whatever their field, always makes a sketch first, in the end they finalize everything in the most perfect way in view of their tastes and conditions.
the dog asset for example, "ANIMALIA"
added the charge as another asset implemented in the game. but it's not, the dev of the game that created it, as well as all the characters that are there. the bad character found animalia written in the prohibited and criminal reverse engineering he did, but the devs said they preferred to take it out and do it personally, as the person responsible for it only takes care of that area. you understand that the game has 6 people working on it, and not all of them make the game fasto. there are those who take care and respond to the public. there are those who only work with modeling. who program is only 2 or 3. and yet they have to take care of other areas. they always hold meetings, there is a lawyer who takes care of the legal part. nothing there is a mess like they think. they always open freelancers, it's a very complex business that no one has any idea about. they just judge thinking it's easy.
after 171, this djjr who maybe asked this youtuber here to make a video to denigrate the image of the game elsewhere, keeps saying that it's easy to do, with an asset it's easy and fast, and as he pointed out, it doesn't even cost much, with 3k you can make a game.but it's funny that we don't see any game made. It's easy but nobody does it.

Actual game developer here, the game industry heavily uses pre made assets in the early development stages. Thus said, pre made assets are commonly used for 3d models, so that the developers can concentrate on the game mechanics. Like you mentioned, 7 people are not enough, but in 12 years much more could've been done, especially if you even use pre made assets for the game mechanics. If you start such a big project with unexperienced devs, you shouldn't be crowd funding, you should set up a patreon or something like this, enabling people who are interested in your passion project to invest in it without any strings attached to it.

That's because even in cases where the developers have good intentions, it gets exponentially (yes, exponentially) difficult to maintain and extend amateur/bad code as the game gets more complex.
Also, given how unoptimized the game already is in its early stages, where theoretically the game requires less resources to run, I really can't imagine the complete game running at at least 60 fps without it requiring a last gen PC.

Don't let cases like this one fall on other indie game developers who are trying to make their dream game, they need the assistance from supporters and sometimes asset creators who could need the money as well and have the solution to save days or months of development.

@Subreon Dude wake the fuck up, people nowadays give gta5 bad rep, but that's only because of the 10 yrs drought and gta online in the current state. That said you gotta consider that the base is still gta5: it, along with RDR2, are undoubtedly the best open world available right now becuase of their very definition. You insinuate lack of passion but these two rappresent living breathing world unlike any other, rockstar has always pushed the formula with much more features and polish, but what really sells the package is the level of detail. If you shoot a window and walk on it you hear the sound of the broken glass, that sort of shit is nowhere in the industry, certainly not on the scale they provide. And to play devil's advocate, as much as people complain about gtao, it is still so popular because the formula was a complete win and most importantly it makes the game still fun beyond every problem which admittedly are reaching a ridiculous extent

    • @Subreon
      @Subreon Год назад

@@edm6302 when I say gtav could be so much better, I do mean the base game, and separate online. Both suck. Starting with massive downgrades from iv to cram v into outdated hardware, which wasn't reverted after moving to more powerful systems. Right off the bat it came out swinging a limp dick. The story features the most barebones alternative choices possible, where if you stray off the specific way rs intended the slightest amount, the mission will fail, so though the play area may be open, the story is linear as fuck. (That problem has only gotten more and more worse with online missions, grinding your options down to nothing to force a false sense of challenge instead of adapting the challenge to the skills and tools players have access to, and encouraging creativity). Dlc was stolen from story mode and slapped into online once they saw that money rolling in from non gamers like the ones that play shit mobile money sinks, ruining the space for real gamers. Online could've been something truly special. But the lack of even the most basic obvious development decisions completely fucked it. Opting to instead copy paste their own money sink formula with only a few extra minutes of newly created cutscenes and dialogue per drop. The rest of it's just been cars, most of which nobody asked for, and as any mod maker will tell you, is not that hard to make. Shit, rs even releases cars with mistakes while modders don't. It's embarrassing. They just do the bare minimum to keep the service running, and they hardly do that too, as seen yet again, by most recent events. While the fan made online mode of fivem features far more options, stability, and security. The positives like attention to detail you mentioned like stepping on glass from a broken car window, is not hard to implement. Other things could be mentioned like a character's feet standing on uneven ground. But all this shit today should just be bare minimum modern standards. Gta and rs have become dreadfully pathetic because they know they can get away with it, because most of their money comes from brainless rich mobile gamers with zero sense of standards to uphold from the older game industry when things were released fully done and polished. The last dying breathe of greatness from rs was rdr2, going as far as to give npcs daily lives. But then they saw how little its online made compared to gta online and quickly gave up on it, instead of getting creative with additional content fans actually asked for. They instead tried to copy paste their gta online update formula into it and nobody wanted it, cuz the mobile gamers weren't there cuz they don't like old stuff, like wild west settings. Real gamers wanted real content, and lazy cheap rs wouldn't provide, so they shut it down to continue their formula in online to the present day. The bar is so fucking low man. When are people gonna finally fucking put an end to this shit and bring out good games again? How much is it going to fucking take before everyone breaks... at this point it seems that's never going to happen. Instead they give up and leave gaming behind entirely, thinking they've "grown out of it" when it's really the lack of growing the games do. The only way to make people realize, is to show them myself. I need to make a competitor. Blow gtas doors off and show them the way. Polished release, kept promises, proper expanding dlc, listening to fans, supporting creativity, etc. If I can just get the funding, I can easily annihilate gta and build a new legendary title. Fuuuuuuuuuuuck it sucks being poor so much. Imagine all the people that die with great ideas because the world keeps them pinned down in poverty. Never being given the opportunity to shine. Just ground into dust with shit jobs and increasingly impossible bills. Let me shine dammit!!!

I am a professional Game Developer and I am saying this basing on many years of experience.
Using "ready made" assets is never an easy endeavour, period. There is no "ready made" solution for anything in games. Each game has its own characteristics, its own challenges to overcome and specific needs. More often than not, we buy assets to find inspiration or as a research on how to deal with specific feature / problem. There are some cases in which we use those assets, but we need to change the way they are implemented in order to integrate them properly into a game, and that often takes a lot of time. In all my years, only once I saw a ready made asset just dumped into the game, and it was horrifying.
I spent almost half a year trying to make satisfying car physics for my own private project. There are a lot of "ready made assets" yet none of them produced what I was going for. I needed all this time to select, accurately pin point certain features from several assets, and reverse engineer them into something useful. And I still need to improve and optimise the solution and change the way in which a car is defined, in order to, for example allow upgrades influence the car behaviour.
Just please remember. It's not as easy as it sounds

Sometimes I feel ashamed of being Brazilian.
From the beginning I suspected that the development was "Brazilianness". ALL developers involved, have 0 programming experience, they were just gta sa mods. I figured all they would do is buy assets and modify them, and that's fine with me, it's okay to modify assets you bought. But then I started to see exorbitant funding campaigns, I started to identify assets that were very familiar from other games by major developers, and I started to suspect fraud.
Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to create a video to talk about it, or if you want to comment on another video, because there is a lot of hype, and the Brazilian people are culturally very ignorant, they defend politicians with claws, when someone is convinced of something and decides to be a fanboy, it's practically impossible to argue about it. I would be slaughtered.
All I can do is watch stupid people donate money to this corrupt scheme and wait for the bubble to burst, when shit will rain everywhere.

Fun fact, "171" is a brazillian penal code for something like "SCAM", which this game SURE is. I'm from brazil and i keep hearing about this game since 2013 and i remember hearing in 2013 that an alpha was being released. They delayed because of engine migration. This game had a great fuss with Brazillian youtubers (specially the teenager clickbait ones) because the map is, actually very close to some brazillian poor neighborhoods and this game had a "rice car tuning", similar to the awful cringe NFU2 visual tuning system and a lot of aspects from GTA SA wich was huge in brazil because of mods and the "hood/favela" feeling. GTA SA had a bunch of "Rio" mods and "São Paulo" mods and, no, we are not in the stone age of the ps2 anymore, despite it being a huge sucess here because of game disc piracy, we are not rolling around on PS5s and Series X's but kids had their PS4 or aliexpress used/old hardware (like xeons and RX580) still to this date those same "GTA RIO" kids love playing GTA RP pretending they are "the big criminal on the favela" because aparently kids in brazil like to embrace the "favela" culture instead of just runing away from it (and for the brazillians butthurt, i was born in a favela, i managed to get out of it when i weas 15 and that was the best thing my family did). Terrible culture for a bunch of idiots spreading this shit. This game is just a big 12 years scam and people still fall for it.

Yeah, back in the early 2000s, companies used the same engines all the time, but at least they made their own assets and were honest about it. I don't like what happened in 2013, but nothing of what we say or do will change the awful direction that Rockstar is taking still.
I was honestly surprised by 171, but even I knew that there was still a lot to be done. At the time, most of us didn't know about what was going on behind the development. Now that we have seen it, at least now we have the choice to either reward that behavior or punish them.
It's one thing to use assets from other games, but that isn't inherently bad as long as it's built upon and everything else is original works. We're talking about core gameplay elements such as a day and night cycle, wanted level system, guns, and even the physics and driving. If you say you need this much money to implement or build _something,_ then that sends a rather black and white picture to donors: they'd build a system of their own right?

So, one of the major problems of this game is without any doubt the fanbase. When the game got announced like 9 years or so, it was just a idea of a concept, a GTA game taking place in Brazil. The average brazillian who was alive in the PS2 era has great memories playing the 3D era GTA's and because of this we have a HUGE comunity of youtubers who make exclusive GTA content, when a "Brazillian GTA" was announced, they simply started doing hundreds of videos about it, and the game didn't even had any footage or demo, anyone who DARED to criticize anything was immediately hated. For me, isn't any surprise to see how the game came out. Those same youtubers who inflated this game's hype are now trying to cover up all the problems. I grew up watching news about this game and it hurts so much that over all brazillian projects, THIS is the one who gets visibility, a poor managed scamming game. I hope this game doesn't discourage people to play other brazillian games.

Can assure you that as a brazilian, the worst part of all of this debacle is dealing with people that defend 171.
Seeing that they made multiple DDOS attacks on the guy who exposed the asset flips and even harassed him and tried to make him lose him job (and also harass some other people for complaining about the massive asset flipping), i think it gives a good idea how lovely, calm, and rational the 171 fanbase is.
If you ever have the misfortune of entering a "discussion" with these people, expect the following
    1. "b-but it's made in BRASIL, so you HAVE to support it no matter what, or you're a TRAITOR!!!11!"
I don't even think i can give you all the extent of how much they love to say this. Every single time they always try to refute whatever criticism with a variation of it. Constantly spewing nationalistic stuff in the hopes of guilt-tripping everyone onto believing that if you hate this mess of an asset flip, you somehow hate this nation and everyone that lives in here, which is a great and convincing argument... expect that it isn't, not only because they sound so nutjob-y, but because every rational brazilian hates here and hopes to someday leave this cursed corrupted nation. But if you still wanna try having a rational argument, then get ready for
    2. "you don't know anything about game developing. asset flipping is 100% fine especially for a small team and they're definitely not overcharging for what they're producing"
Feel free to argue if this is a good argument or not, but i point this out because before MixMods exposed the asset flips, the same 171 fanboys always attacked everyone that dared to say the game had even a single bit of asset flip. Anyways, if you still try to argue with them, then watch then get back to square one and go on until you get tired of talking with something that resembles more of a ultra-nationalistic quotes bot than a living human being.
Overall, this whole debacle makes me mad not just because of the rabid fanbase and how it's giving massive fuel to stupid nationalists, but because it's an absolute shame that the main face of the brazilian game industry is currently this. So many great games and our main representant is a stupid deceiving asset flip that's in development since 2015, with one of the only positive things about it is that at least the devs are (still) not egotistical enough to make this the brazilian Yandere Sim.

One thing that annoys me is that we Brazilians are specialists at making ourselves look untrustworthy. Whenever you see some big project there's always drama, low quality, low effort. It's a mix of trying too hard, not possessing enough skill, aiming too high and god knows what else. Luckily this isn't a rule but those cases highly overshadow the few good examples of people doing things in a minimally decent way.
For everything there's a right way and the wrong way. Usually the wrong way happens because they gotta take shortcuts. Ugh. Whyyyy.

Concerning LOD in GTA, the car models are in two types. One model is in high polygon count( 15,000-20,000 polys) and the other low level (13k poly to less) such that, when the cars are closer to the camera the high polygon one shows and further away the low poly shows.

To be honest, I think there's so much left to do in this game that I don't even blame them for trying to save costs. They'll eventually have to pay royalties for actors and proprietary music. Sure, they should be more clear to where the money is going to and they should employ more people to finish this, but to be able to pull of a world like that with only 7 people? I just hope they pick up the pace better and start to employ more people to finish this game, they way it is, it will never finish.

As a Portuguese person from Portugal, i know that many people from brazil emigrate to my country because Life in brazil is hard and terrible in a lot of places.
I dont think much more could be done in the first few years because they are only 7 people with 0 experience and they probably do it as a hobby that recently became known. they lied in somethings but that was most likely because they needed some more money. they had no experience soo no i dont think more could be done cuz trying to program with 0 experience is frustrating as hell
yeah but lemme be honest, with such evidences around these guys they are probably scumbags who tried to make money the easy way and managed to do it. But now with their amount of money they probably have a chance of doing something better with the game, cuz now they have money to idk... HIRE SOME ACTUALL DEVS. Also i dont know other games made by brazilian teams, so just cuz of the fact they were able to get this amount of popularity and attention kinda surprises me. but well see

17:09 Y'know, this response is at the very least, freaking insulting, Junior has been modding games since he was a kid, and he has actually developed games from the ground up, without having to buy every single feature and asset on it, you can look that up in his webpage.
If anything, Junior is in an exceptional position to tell BGG how a games gets developed.

About the title... a quote from the brazilian Federal District Court of Justice website (ran through Google Translate):
"The famous crime of Article 171 of the Penal Code basically consists of the practice of scams, in which the criminal deceives the victim to obtain some kind of advantage, most often in money."
    Yeah, sounds about right.

Most of game do asset flip or similar thing.
    Examples
Some car in GTA IV and GTA V are same. Interior are sometime shared with other car.(This applies to lot of game. Forza Horizon 4 Mercedes Unimog, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cadillac Limousine, and Forza Horizon 5 Unimog, Grand Cherokee, Limo are literally same
Building are often copy paste even it not pre made asset.

For me, I would love to make a game but I have no knowledge on how to code/make assists so I just end up using Free Assists to help me out well I still do some stuff myself to the best of my ability (what's not very much)
I would never ask people to pay for my games in their current form, if you wanted to donate to me sure whatever that's your choice but I would not ask you for Money to get a day/night system that I took off the asset store store for a few dollars because that's a scummy thing to do, especially since it's not my code/my team's code (if I had a team)
