I'm taking the Victorian Government to the High Court of Australia to challenge them on the Electric Car tax! Dubbed the world's worst tax it is not only a disincentive for new buyers of EVs, but also delays our progression to cleaner/greener forms of transportation.

Except someone has to pay their share of road maintenance.

Coal is king and will be for the next 100 years.
World meters tell me 47 years of financially viable crude left. 2068.

I have just paid my registration for my MGZSEV Another weird thong has emerged Vicroads has come up with an additional 404 km apparently allowing for the time between sending the photo of odometer. Now the first photo shows that my car had only done 90km . This is some sort of algorithm

Yes On 5 August 1997, there was a court case about states taxing the tobacco industry transport , The High Court of Australia stated In response the Commonwealth is the only one to impose a tax on transport , and the states are not allowed to do so as the state was double dipping , what NSW should of done is just put up the Rego on ev to cover the 15,000 Km a car would travel a year that's an extra $300 a year

So we pay taxes on the electricity used to charge an EV and they want to further tax users again. The pure definition of double dipping which governments are so good at.

Hi Chris, I have a ZS EV & my wife has a HS PHEV, I don't understand how they can potentially charge tax on a PHEV when they use petrol. My wife uses her car for work & can travel many hours in a week & hundreds of kms which means using petrol & paying fuel tax. If this new law comes into effect anyone that owns a PHEV will be paying tax twice. How can they justify this double dipping money grabbing act of daylight robbery?

Chris, if the tax is ultimately ruled unconstitutional, would that imply that it was unconstitutional from day one and people who had paid the tax would be reimbursed? Or would any judgement only count from the date of the result?

    • @chrisvanderstock

As I understand it, yes we would be reimbursed.

A national approach IS needed. The best approach is to tax all road users according to the damage that is done to the roads and to the environment, ie a RUC. Thus a light weight EV (as in kgs) would be taxed at a low rate, say 2c / km. This would scale up to say 75c plus per km for ICE vehicles (which would apply to heavy ICE B doubles and the like). Registration charges would need to be reduced to a nominal charge. This policy is pursued in other places (eg. NZ). Further (and to take a long view) we need to reduce the overall number of vehicles on the roads by moving people and freight to rail. Only that will make a difference to emissions by the transport sector, which has gone backwards in the past few years.

@@Ralph_Baric_PhD_C2019 not sure what you are getting at here. By weight I was referring to the difference between, eg, a Fiat 500e and a Mercedes EQV. The latter is twice as heavy, so it might be charged 3-5c per km….

  • @simongross3122
    @simongross3122 Год назад

Why isn't there a road usage tax (by km and weight) for all vehicles regardless of whether they are EV, PHEV, Petrol, Diesel or whatever? They could then remove the fuel excise completely, and all road users will be taxed on the same basis.

I must admit I struggle with the issue of interstate travel is it reasonable that Victoria collects a tax for activities that did not happen in Victoria?
Also what about interstate visitors do they get tax except travel?
Dose this potentially cause problems with free travel between the states and territories?
If the states have the same rate are they participating in collusion and price fixing?

I do hope ur case is going well. As an ev owner I believe they will eventually bring in a road user tax on them, but currently with low uptake I don't think it's the right move. Just sends the wrong message to car buyers.
I do believe like the fuel excise a tax on EVs has to be consistent between all states/territories which is operated, run and collected by the federal government

  • @victorsvoice7978

There should be no taxes on electric vehicles.
If State governments need money for road maintenance. They can get it from traffic and parking fines.
Sydney has the highest number of toll roads in the world.
These Ev taxes are a greedy cash grab.

Everybody bar cyclists and electric motorbikes pays a tax for the privilege of driving. I definitely want an EV, but my budget puts me out of the market and will do until I can get a second-hand EV with a viable battery with at least 7 years of effective life.
Too meet the cost of road maintenance and the set up of infrastructure for EV charging, I'm not talking about the charging units but the changes to the Victorian power grid and the necessity to produce new green power outputs, how much extra do the those with ice vehicles need to stump up to meet revenue short fall..
I do agree, though, that the per kilometre method is ridiculous and when driving out of state does not seem legal.
I'm stuck paying 46 cents per litre of fuel in NSW, I don't believe for a second that a levy/tax won't be charged here on EV'S as soon as they hit critical numbers that impact revenue.
In my defence, I ride my e-bike to work most days. It's a ridiculously beautiful flat 7 kms and pick up my shopping on the way home. I've owned my 1.6lt getz for 16 years, which I bought new when I lived in Melbourne and when I transferred to a position in the city I took the train and walked the 1km from the station there and back. The train, bike and small efficient car (I've maintained it since purchase) I do for health and minimising my carbon out put. I applaud you for your using your financial position to minimise your carbon out put and hope you have your current EV for 16yrs, but your not above contributing to the black bitumen kerbing and drainage.

I’m still don’t get it as to how BEV is ‘cleaner’ cars? From government data that Fossil fuels contributed 71% of total electricity generation in 2021, including coal (51%), gas (18%) and oil (2%) and THEY ARE NOT CLEAN at all, if anything they are worse then petrol in a ICE car. Let alone these toxic materials used in making the batteries and the fact that there’s no proper recycling rules or procedures for those batteries to date yet. So stop saying BEVs are clean, they are not

While coal has more emissions than oil for a given amount of energy, electric motors are 3 times more efficient than ICE so they are similar overall.
Coal fired electricity emissions for EVs are not dumped on the roadside near houses and schools, unlike ICE vehicles.
My car is charged by solar.
