The Monster Howitzer That Can Drop Shells on a Dime 30-Miles Away

  • While the Chinese were the first to experiment with explosive powders in 300 AD, it was not until 1252 that the age of gunpowder began. The cannon as we know it first blasted into the scene around 1350 as it tore through the clashing armies of the Hundred Years' War, quickly spread across Europe and redefined warfare forever.
The weapon reached its pinnacle in the 17th century, and many experts have considered it obsolete for decades. However, the new M777 howitzer has proven them wrong.
With a robust frame made of titanium and aluminum alloys, BAE System's M777 is approximately half the weight of other comparable systems and able to be transported across rugged terrain by cargo aircraft and disassembled at a moment’s notice.
But its portability is deceiving, as the M777 can obliterate targets up to 30 miles away with a wide array of devastating ammunition such as the Excalibur M982 smart round.
The M777 towed 155-millimeter artillery piece has gradually become the universal Howitzer platform for several nations in the world. But the American crews have unveiled the secret to turning the gun from a blunt instrument into a force to be reckoned with…

Don´t believe the hype. It´s not the gun, it´s the shell. The M777 firing dumb rounds is as inaccurate as anything else out there. Weather conditions are what rules the accuracy. Little wind, good chance of a hit. Heavy winds, and it lands a mile away. Hundreds of these were destroyed in Ukraine, because they just can´t defend from counter-battery fire, and loitering munitions. In fact, they are so complex and finnicky, that even a pistol round can render it useless. And they were not meant for the fire rate that the Ukraine war is demanding of each gun. Soviet guns have fired thousands of rounds after its expected barrel life, and they are still firing. While as the M777´s components ware down after just a few dozen! And this is being said by the ukrainians themselves, it is not "russian propaganda".
It is the Excalibur shell that is lethal. But the russians have their own, called Krasnopol, that is just as accurate. The Excalibur is being used with a GPS guidance, which means it can´t hit a moving target, and the ukrainians lack a drone with laser designator, which is what the russians have for their shell. I have seen insane Krasnopol shots of moving targets, that would make your skin crawl.

0:54 The crew has a lot to do with it. Look at the dude on the left do a Superman jump onto the gun as soon as it fires. Yow.
Not mentioned is the 777's ability to fire at least five shells (I saw 7 in a different report) in under a minute using different trajectories such that they all arrive on the target at the same moment - a true one-gun time-on-target. Imagine three 777s doing that to a single target -
15 to 21 shells landing simultaneously in your midst - terrifyingly effective.
That much firepower arriving at the same instant must be absolutely shattering, literally and psychologically. Then the 777 is gone in 3 minutes so no counter-battery fire is possible. Assuming you can even think after a time-on-target like that!
Well done to the BAE-USA partnership!!!

The 155mm howitzer was not that often used. The 155mm howitzer is a must have for infantry. As I ha lve said many times before. You want Artillery at your six, you must have forward observers embeded in your unit. Together your enemy just vanishes, in little pieces. Your sons, brothers, get to come home. This philosophy has nowcl extended both Naval and Air Force as well.

Good video though the technical details about round ranges are not accurate, and missing some information such as RAP, and issues about the "recoil damage" are also moderately incorrect this is only pertaining to the higher charges, which relates to possible breach damage. But the two true keys which makes this howitzer deadly are its mobility and the fire control software that speeds up target calculations. Still a fan of manual gunnery though.

@@robertodebeers2551 Wow!! You did not list even one difference!
The old tubes (M126) sure were not stainless steel-SS does not have the "toughness". Neither the M185 or M199 tubes. It is called "gun steel,"
a material to withstand the high pressures. SS would quickly fail.
You also don't seem to know the old M126 and M185 have the exact same breech. As far as I know, the M185 cannon is still used on the M109
Self Propelled Howitzer. It can fire the RAP round (with the M203 charge)
30KM or 18.75 miles. (Rocket Assisted Projectile, but they have better projectiles now.). Our enemies are well aware of all of this, thanks to our news media. Thanks for your interest and quick response.
