When I speak about "Quality Content" this is exactly what I mean. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with vlogs and stuff like that, but this is just absolutely great content.
Dude, fantastic freaking video. I’ve been searching far and wide for a decent auto-focus (while in video mode) tutorial and yours laid out the EXACT information I needed for my shoot tomorrow so THANK YOU!! So many terrible videos I had to sift through, and yours was a diamond in the ruff. I appreciated the way you gave examples of different scenarios to really demonstrate how to use the 4 methods in practical settings. Seriously, thanks so much.
Brother... thank you for your knowledge that you share
I have been looking for months for a tutorial like this. I can't believe there hasn't been more videos on this subject. I did find one other but it was so, so and not in depth like yours. Thank you so much for doing this video for those of us that seem to get all caught up in keeping focus. I for one have been lost. Great tutorial. Please keep us the good work.
Super helpful. Thank you for making a detailed, methodical video that other videography youtubers have not took the time to make. A true inspiration!
8 takes makes me feel better about my lack of focus pulling skills
One of the easiest ways to maintain focus with manual mode is to zoom in on something as far away and as detailed as possible then focus up. When you zoom back out everything is in focus. Even if the camera is moving it should work. You might have to reset it every now and then because of lighting.
This is how we were taught when I was in college for video production. It has never failed me.
Next tutorial on "cinematographer's work out" pls :D
CZTachyonsVN 😂👍
Haha... I was thinking the same thing.. Certainly need to be quite fit to film or at least simi-decent fit. :D
Glide Cam - the workout comes free. ;)
lol 😂👍
id love to see this.. workout cinematography
Fantastic video! Thank you so much.
I love the way this video is laid out. Very respectful of the time and attention of your audience. Great work and thanks you!
Hands down one of the best videos I've found on YT regarding this subject! As someone who wants to learn the basics and options creators use while recording - it took me about 40+ hours of watch time to finally stumble across your channel. Damn your algorithm, RUclips! Thank you for the amazing content. Subbed for life!
thank you man,it was just so helpful,in fact every video you make is always helpful
This was so helpful! Thank you for actually showing us examples of everything you were explaining!
So refreshing to watch someone like you who speaks the right language and makes everything so immediately understood. You are a true breath of fresh air.
Thank you so much for explaining this in such a detailed and interesting way! Exactly what i was hoping for in a tutorial!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, that information is priceless........I appreciate you and your time tyou take to share and help up and coming videographers
love the tutorial ,solved many doubts about focusing ,specially "it is okay to have some out of focus moment " - Really interesting and new :)
Thank you so much for all of these awesome tutorials. I love how you actually explain concepts in a hands-on setting. : )
Another great tutorial man, thanks a lot for putting this together and sharing your advise! I'll definitely be implementing this into my videos! Thanks!
Hi Parker! I wanted to thank you for making these videos. If only I knew about the flexizone option before... :) . I'm really thankful!
8:54 that guy dropped his phone XD
XD
Malachi M 😂😂😂
😂👍
This was the best tutorial/example of focusing. I have seen on RUclips.
Great tutorial on focus. Most comprehensive I have watched to date. Very helpful thanks
really great tips Thanks for a nice Video
During the interview focusing section if you can get a larger distance between the background and the talent you can use a slightly larger F (number) and then keep it locked on manual focus and you will still have the talent in focus OK even if they move.
I already do exactly what you mention in this video, yet I still watched every bit of it. Nicely done!
This is great. I'm sending this to all of my favorite video makers.
I've always wanted to know how to keep tac sharp focus in a fight scene without having to raise the aperture. I've watched movies and TV shows where the action is going everywhere and it's always captured with such sharp focus. I think they achieve this with a high budget follow focus ring and a focus puller who knows how to predict peoples movements, but still. I just hate it when my actors give such an amazing performance, but we have to do the scene over again because focus wasn't sharp enough.
so parker, are you arms so big because of the glidecam?
rad0ri or by doing something else ;)
Creators' Corner lol
Awesome video man. Having just purchased a Ronin MX these are going to be super helpful!
I have watched countless videos and usually I get one key tip per vid. This had like 20 in one vid. Thank you so much.
Your videos are the best!!!! What picture profile do you use with your 1DX?
I'm confused by the gains, how to curl the gimble
Glad to see you explained everything throughly in detail 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thanks a ton for this awesome vid Parker!
Grading tutorial please??
Please do a video on audio!
Kaden Kelsch the Audio was so clean for this! I want to know how it was done!
thanks man, great breakdown of some otherwise tricky techniques appreciate this!
Thanks for taking the time to make this. Great stuff.
Great video!! How do you manage to shoot with lower aperture in daylight? Do you crank the shutter speed? even when shooting 24p? Cause I really don't like ND filters :)
Mattias Nilsson if you crank the shutter you lose the cinematic rule so really the only way is to shoot with ND filters how come you don't like them?
Yepp i know, but you wont really notice if shooting slow motion. It also depends on how much movement there is in the shots. ND-filters usually degrades the image. Color casts, vignette, loss of sharpness :(
Very true , when I shoot at higher frame rates I need to shoot a little more than double to smooth motion even more so for faster action
Try using a higher quality ND filter. A good ND filter should have no noticeable effect on image quality. They can be pricey so try buying one big one and use step down rings
Im using a good ND and step down rings. It works okey but if you push the ND to much you get vignette. Works good for some stops.
tell's you something about an too expensiv auto-focus system and grabs an 1DX Mark II (5k+) and has an RED-rig in his trunk. lmao
Awesome tips and amazing examples for the different scenarios! You're the man!
Really Great Description for using all the different focusing Techniques, Opened my eyes to endless use! Thanks a Bunch.
waiting for more tutorials
When he says Canon has the best af system....Sony be like- hold my 🍻
3 yrs ago
This is the most educational video about video focus on youtube. Thank you so much for this.
You all are amazing! Thank you for sharing.
Wrong. Sony has the best autofocus system. There are 425 focus points on just the a6300. But the color quality is much better on Canon. I seriously love this channel so much though. Finally somebody I can understand.
hey Parker are you currently using the Helium 8k sensor with the EPIC W or the Weapon?
I agree, Sony even allows you to select which face you want to track in a multi-person scenario.
canon is better in video because if transitions smoother than 6300 which doesn't look very natural/cinematic. sony is better and faster in photo.
It's not the same the amount of focus squares that a camera haves than the focus system. Im on Nikon, and I know and everyone knows that the Dual Pixel that canon have's is the most trustfull autofocus system all around.
For Video Canon Dual Pixel Auto Focus wins hands down 🙌🏼
Another helpful tutorial! Can you recommend a cheaper Canon DSLR with that brilliant AF system in video mode?
B. Hoffmann here's a list of the cameras going down in price with dual pixel and
1dx ii
5D IV
6D ii
7d ii
80D
77D
70D
800d
Rebel sl2 (200D)
Abdulrahman Ateya the main reasons why i bought the canon 70d is that autofocus and flippy touchscreen. can not imagine not having those features
David Hrzenjak I have the Panasonic G7, and while the autofocus isn't great, that flippy touchscreen has become one of the most useful things on my camera
Abdulrahman Ateya but you get 4k
i cant wait for the time when my budget will support 4k workflow
this is one of the best tutorials I've seen. Thank you man!
this was awesome. great instruction, examples, and of course so well shot. more videos just like this please!
notification squad here
Apart from the focus tutorial, the color grading is brilliant. Plz help where I can find these cool color gradings
I'm wanting to know where the color grades are coming from also!!!
Sometimes the best is just a simple S curve which is really nice and makes pop like that
This was a quality vid from beginning to end. Answered all the questions I had about focus.
Great work Parker! This was very helpful and a super high quality tutorial! Long time fan right here
Damn GH5 does all that while recording so unpractical for run and gun. Way to go Canon.
8:52 dropped his phone
😂👍
Always super helpful. Thanks @ Parker.
Parker, THANKS for being equally interesting and informative! Great video content mate!!!
You sir, are very attractive
You talk in HIGH APERTURE - f/11 to f/22, but technically are not these the SMALL APERTURE?
George A. de Araújo it’s the f stop number that’s large/high not the physical size of the aperture. I always got this confused too. A large aperture is a large number f stop even though the size created by the diaphragms is small.
I clicked on this video with so many questions in my head and you answered all of them. Thank you that was very helpful
Fantastic video. I believe you answered 95% of the issues us new to filming have about focus. You were able to make it manageable instead of so intimidating. Nice also to hear multiple takes, with possibly different settings etc.
Are you from utah?
Trevor Joren I think he is
This is definitely filmed in Utah. Would bet money that he is. ;)
ye
I was thinking the same thing.
Nd boom. Salt lake temple. There is your answer. lol
I really need help guys. I want to get into vlogs and photography. I want a computer that can do video and photo editing. I also want a very good DSLR. It has to be DSLR. My budget for a laptop is $500 and the same for a camera. I know I am on a tight budget, but please help me as much as you can!!!
YZFKid get a canon t3i for the dslr!
Canon SL2 // 200D for the DSLR !! 1080p60fps // Dual pixel AF , touchable screen, high ISO, very small so easy to carry around
Ryan Snaadt With what did you earn thousands ?
do yoi have a phone.... Thats all you need... JUST START UPLOADING>>>> Thats waht i did and now I am at 100 subs... just kepe uploading my dude!
same I used to be obssessed in gear... but I realized the key to success is to master whats in front of the camera to hone you craft...!
Parker, great channel. You're own way of presenting. Good tips and tricks
Thank you so much man. I ve been struggling with this for a while until I found your video. More power to you man Godbless!
Wrong! Sony 6500 and 6300 are the world BEST and fastest autofocus system out there! Canon is wayyyyyy behind
You can have a really fast auto focus but thats not the most necessary thing... The quality of the video that the camera give to us is the most important
Tiago Guerra sony a6300 is way better quality wise than Canon on the same price .4k anf 1080p 120fps slog what a deal
I do not thing that, but each one as is opinion. To me Cannon is the best of all cameras all there. (I am not including Red Camera)
Tiago Guerra I have not tested the 80d, but I have tested the 70d and t7i ( the sensor from the t7i is supposed to be similar to the 80d) and I found the quality of the video from these two cameras unusable. Horrible artifacts, terrible DR, terrible in low light. I tried changing the contrast to the lowest setting but the DR didn't become better at all. Canon crop cameras have line skipping which causes this horrible video quality. I compared the 70d and t7i to the Sony a6000 and the Nikon d500, both were immeasurably better. The a6000 has very nice IQ and the d500 has gorgeous video IQ. The Canon cropped cameras has worse video IQ than the Canon g40 which is a camcorder with a .5" sensor.
Tiago Guerra
Sony shoots 6k and downscale on pure 4k. Also in s log 2 slog 3. Well and you can zoom on prime lenses too! Without explaining all the great features sony has to offer.non long time ago i was a canon shooter 5dm5,7d,and more..I missed all the beauty of the sony cameras... well not anymore.
Probably the best video about focussing I've watched .
Best video that I have seen and learned a lot...lot of meaning less videos around and I definitely can tell that this is the best

Best video ever to understand the focus techniques!
Such a great video, thanks for making this! I've been a photographer for years and am making the jump to video as of late. I was always under the impression you just used AF and boom, oh how much I've learned lately after doing a few shoots. This video has helped me realize AF isn't always the answer and it's OK for things to be out of focus at different points of the video, it's all in how you tell the story!
We love your videos. Keep it up man!
Wow "that's all you got for us" you say! Parker, you gave me a ton of knowledge that's going to make me a better videographer. Thank you, much appreciated!
