      im a beginner with cameras so can anyone clarify what shooting "wide" means? Is that shooting with a wide open aperture (f1.4 for example) or are you referring to something else, if so can you explain, thanks

    • @AndresSenande
      @AndresSenande 6 лет назад +12

      Patrice X30 by wide he just means there’s more in the frame than just the subject. If you look at the scene with guy in the yellow hoody you can see his boys in the back and the house and even some of the front lawn. By shooting it wide and higher aperture it seems like everything is more in focus. As opposed to a shot where the subject is close and you can see more details of the subject himself

    The method to "shoot wide" is the biggest/best hack or pro tip. You actually mentioned this tip a while back in the video of how you setup your Ronin-M. Great advice! Blessing bro

      Patrice X30 shoot wide with respect to focal length (lens)

    • @OneManOneCamera
      @OneManOneCamera 6 лет назад +4

      Patrice X30 - I'm going to agree with you on this. I never heard the term "shooting wide" before. I've heard "shooting wide open" which as you stated, refers to a wide open aperture. I'm thinking that he is referring to using a wide angle lens with an aperture which allows for the majority of the shot to remain in focus.
      I checked his kit.com page and he has the Laowa 7.5/F2.0 lens which is a great wide angle/low-light lens and does match what I wrote above.
      In conclusion, my interpretation of what "shoot wide" means is to get a wide angle lens, shoot at the lowest aperture which fits the theme of your movie while keeping the frame in focus. Easy!

    • @EAZYMEDIAPRODUCTIONS
      @EAZYMEDIAPRODUCTIONS 6 лет назад +2

      It means a wide focal length on your lens. I use a sigma 17-50mm f2.8 and i keep it at 17mm for my "wide" shots

    I sometimes use the equal distance technique (while shooting in 4k) and then digitally zoom in post so it seems as if I'm increasing/decreasing distance but I'm really not.

    I grabbed a 180 dollar monitor recently with focus peaking and zebra lines. Bought it specifically for mounting on the gimbal but we end up using it for a lot more due to the features and vibrance of it; even shooting in log and without a LUT input. (Feelworld f570)

    Dope video man, you've touched on this subject before during videos but I'm glad you went more in depth with this. Another tip I found useful is if your camera or monitor doesn't have focus peaking you can always digitally zoom in on your LCD screen and put your subject in focus before shooting. I tend to focus on my subjects eyes a lot and this method helps when you're subject is far away or you're shooting a wide shot.

    I agree with your perspective regarding “auto focusing.” It does feel like I’m “hunting” for that sweet spot which is frustrating, because the videographer does not have the control with auto focus.

  • @iEditProjects
    @iEditProjects 5 лет назад

    I use the distance from subject method because it's the obvious first choice. That being said..your aperture method is genius. The ridiculous fact is that I get so caught up with shallow depth of field on shoots that this super obvious solution has eluded me. It's like my brain sees F 1.8 and I never venture higher unless the histogram reflects a need. I've been checking out your content here and there for a minute now. Thank you for this practical approach to focusing on a gimbal. I'm taking the follow focus back off my list of items to buy. P.S. I live by focus peaking as well!! It's one of my favorite features.

    I agree with all your tips, been using them for years. However, this year we bought a Sony a7R Mark III. The auto focus on it is amazing. When I'm on a gimbal, most of the time it's spot on, the trick is to watch it carefully and every so often, even if the picture looks like it's in focus on the tiny monitor on the back or even on the larger Atomos Inferno (we use), still touch the camera monitor where you want the focus to be because it can drift for no apparent reason. We don't shoot music videos so most of our shots are short so it's easy to keep my "brain" focused on the shot every second. I'd love to go with a wireless follow focus rig and, while they are cheap these days (Moza just $300), you still have to have an operator and they have to practice to get good at doing it. I'm trying to convince my editor that it's a new skill he should learn!!! :) Nice video my friend, keep 'em coming.
