This will be my 2nd time making your challah! It was super easy and delicious! My internet went out, so this time I’m writing it down, although a day late. May I add, THANK YOU FOR NO BREAD MACHINE! Shalom and blessings to you and your family 💙🕊
This is so far the best Challah I have ever made, I feel proud of my self after I was able to accomplish this today, I did some changes and I want to share it here. I mixed the 2 cups of water with the sugar and yeast first and put to the side wile I sift the flour, (I prefer to always sift the flour on every recipe) I used all purpose flour, after that I added the yeast mixture to the flour and salt mixture than added the oil and the eggs, I didn't have to use any more water. It came out Perfect!!! I absolutely Loved it. Thank you so much, I've been following you for many years and I Love not only your recipes but also your personality
hi,we are a very small jewish comunity, here in the canary islann ds,spain and we tried your challah recipe and is super great!!!! Thanks for your recipes and keep going!!! we watch you al the time! see you!!!
Oyiii Jamie! Nobody bakes like you!! I made the dough a few days ago and made the challah today and of course I took challah . It came out amazing and it is great I hurt my arms a few weeks ago after a fall and this was the easiest. Thank you so much!
As I was reading United with Israel I saw a link to watch how to make 'Hallah' with Chef Jamie Geller...I subscribed to your channel and I love your videos!
Can I make this challah with instant yeast instead of active dry yeast? I can't wait to try the recipe. I have always been afraid of yeast so I buy challah for Shabbos. I always wanted to give it a try. After seeing this video I absolutely will! I love all of your recipes and cookbooks.
Your bread looks amazeballs. This shiksa is going to make it ASAP. I love Challah & never knew it was this easy can't wait to try. Thanks!😀 Question? Can I use regular flour? I don't have bread flour right now and can't go out during this corona nightmare I'm immune compromised. But I gotta have some Challah . Haha
Another question, I have been using a coarse sea salt lately for much of my cooking (not baking), but, I am wondering, can I substitute coarse sea salt for kosher salt? I think it would measure about the same.
Even though I think I'm following the recipe exactly, I can't seem to braid it. When I try it is very sticky- more so than when I use regular flour and also when I finally do manage to make the strands to braid they just mush and melt into each other resulting in an unbraided loaf. She seems to roll the strands easily in the video. What am I doing wrong? I'm using bob's mill artisan bread flour (which I believe is the same as no knead flour).
It may be that you are using too much liquid, we find especially with this recipe that the amount needed can vary so better to err on the side of less water, knowing the flour will absorb more than you think.
Hi there this recipe is amazing but even with adding extra sugar (not too much extra i was worried about the recipe not working), the family still wanted it sweeter. What is the most sugar that can be put in without compromising the recipe ? thank you :)
Awesome that Is what I did. Thank you so much all the way from South Africa! Holding thumbs it's perfect for rosh hashanah. Wishing you and urs shana tova umetuka 🍏🍎🍯🐝
I just had a question. What do you think the outcome would be if you followed the recipe exactly but left dough in refrigerator for 24 hours instead of 48-72 hours. Some of the other no knead bread recipes only call for 8-24 hour resting. I understand the dough must be in the refrigerator due to the eggs but why the long rest time?
May I know the recipe in gram please?😭 I have an scale but I don’t have measurement cup or spoor for the measuring.. please allow me to make this amazing bread through corona🙏🏻🙏🏻
I don't have the info in grams, you can try and convert it all with online questions. I can tell you that you will need over a kilo of flour for 8+ cups.
Aren't you the same lady that did that great video with your two friends talking all about the blessings of making challah and how the time is meant to be used to pray blessings into your family and those in your community that need it? I thought preparing a challah at home was kind of part of the culture of being mindful? If you skip all that and make a "challah bread in five minutes a day" (a la book artisan bread in five minutes a day) - doesn't that defeat the purpose? I'm confused. :/
Thank you so much for your comment. It's interesting you had this response, Hubby said the same thing to me. I will answer you like I did him, in two ways. 1) There are some (if not many people) that are simply overwhelmed by the idea of making challah and the many hours (almost day long) commitment it requires. So many are missing out on the simple blessing b/c it feels like such a project. This recipe is specifically geared to those people that would otherwise not be making challah. 2) Even with this shortcut there is an opportunity to make the special blessing (if the correct amount of flour is used) and to pray for your family and community as you mix and shape/braid. The actual ingredients, shaping and use of the challah (as a religious ceremonial bread) all have spiritual, kabbalistic and religious significance - none of which are diminished by the lack of kneading. It is my hope and dream that more people make challah because of the ease of this particular recipe.

Make it! AP flour is fine.
Can you make a sourdough starter challah?
It makes the best pb&j on the second day.
Could you sub honey for the granulated sugar? If so, would it be the same amount?
Another question, I have been using a coarse sea salt lately for much of my cooking (not baking), but, I am wondering, can I substitute coarse sea salt for kosher salt? I think it would measure about the same.
Love challah bread! You should make french toast out of it..it is the best!!
Can some on tell me how manny it is in european standarts ? pls
Can you freeze the unbaked dough if you want to just make one loaf at a time?
You can, just defrost the dough and bring to room temp before shaping and baking
J. C. So half it and freeze before allowing to set/rise the 2 hours?

I would say you could double it.

We have tried it and it just not as good, so it works, but it's better after 48.
Looks wonderful, but why wasn’t hamotzi said before you ate?
Do I pull apart a piece for this recipie?
Hello Jamie, I’m making challah for the first time. Does this recipe make one ore two loaves? Thank you.
2 loaves
Can you halve this recipe? If so, do you halve the yeast as well?
Yes and yes
❓❓If I need to freeze one of the loafs, do I freeze it *as soon as it’s braided❓* (After the 48 hours in refrigerator?) Please and thank you ☺️
Either then or after it is baked
Jamie Geller ♥️My FIRST Challa is going into the oven thanks to * you!*
Can I use this technique to do other bread, say seeded rye?
Seeded rye is usually a sourdough bread not yeast
Can I cut the recipe in half and put it in a loaf pan ( how long to bake) ?
It should work to cut in half and loaf pan is great, same baking time.
Can this be used as a pizza dough?
Yes.
Can you hold the sugar on this one or is it vital?
You can sub honey, but challah is supposed to be sweet and it does effect the texture.
What flour should I use in Israel?
All Purpose flour will work well too
May I know the recipe in gram please?😭 I have an scale but I don’t have measurement cup or spoor for the measuring.. please allow me to make this amazing bread through corona🙏🏻🙏🏻

Hi! My challah NEVER lasts even 24 hours without going hard, any tips to make it last?
That is strange, keep it in an airtight container or bag and reheat before serving.

WHERES THE BUTTER
there is no butter but olive oil instead as Challah should not be dairy nor meat... but PARVE which means neutral
