To keep the braid from rising apart in the oven, start the temperature out at 250 degrees for the first ten minutes, then increase to 300 for the next ten minutes, and then finish it off at 350 for the last 15-20 minutes.

Wowwwww. So I spent almost 5 total hours making 2 loaves of challah bread yesterday, and I could’ve made it in less than half that amount of time. 😮 Definitely going to try this!! Thank you.
I’ve made this recipe a few times as well as others but this is the one I always go back to. Thank you for this wonderful recipe and great instruction. God bless.
No Lie, and I’m not exaggerating BUT I’ve tried many CHALLAH bread recipes and this is BY FAR the best recipe!!! Finally found. To just have it with butter and jam or French toast, My family’s favorite! Amazing recipe and so simple. Thank you so much!
Goodness! I’m just now seeing this! Im so sorry! I have added cinnamon to the dough, made a cinnamon sugar mixture to put on flat dough before cutting into six strips. I don’t have a recipe really, but simply “eyeballed” it... if you need a recipe, I can try to figure out one for you.
This Challah is delicious! I was terribly embarrassed because I botched the first one after murdering my yeast with boiling water (and my small kitchenaid was too weak to handle the dough). However, I didn't give up and tried again today with cooler water and kneading manually instead. My braiding was good for the first 2/3 so one end looks appropriate. The other end looks like Medusa's nightmare. Definitely will make it regularly in the future because your instructions were so good for following. You have given me power to make Challah! Thank you so so much!!

Aw, I’m sorry it didn’t turn out... some have made the water too hot (hot tap is usually about 105°). Maybe that will help. Sometimes the yeast is a bit older it not kept in the fridge. I’m so sorry. I hope you will try it again ❤️ And... don’t worry about the braiding... you can just braid in three ❤️
I have never heard of using "really, really hot water" because the yeast dies after a certain temperature... Apparently the metal of your bowl pulls some of the heat from the water, at least enough to keep your yeast alive. As long as your Challah turns out deliciously, and looks as beautiful as the loaf in this video, you are doing it perfectly. Thank-you for a beautiful video, especially for the demo of using a six strand braid which is a favorite style of mine... Yours is certainly beautiful!
Hello! Well, the water is about 105° or so (not super hot, or your are correct in stating that it does kill the yeast. Thank you for your encouragement. I do love baking it for my family and others. ❤️
I watched several other videos on preparing and baking Challah bread and found yours the most straight forward and enjoyable. I wonder why you covered your baking sheet with so much flour. You must have a reason and hope you will share it. It would have been wonderful to see you cut a slice, put on a bit of the delicious sounding honey butter and enjoy your reaction! Thanks so much for making and sharing this video!

What a delight to hear from you! I pray that the bread is enjoyed by your family. I have added dry fruit snd nuts to this dough, and it turns out beautifully. Hi. I loved your demonstration it was great. However I tried it and it hardly rose what would you suggest? Its been really cold here in the uk more yeast or different flour? Thanks
You might check your yeast. If it is too old, that can affect it. It has to stay in the fridge. The other thing is your water might be too hot... I know I said “hot” water, but from our tap, it usually is around 100-105. That might be the issue as well. I super hope it turns out next time ❤️ Let me know. Shabbat Shalom ❤️
I love your video, thank you for posting it. It is so easy to follow and is the only one that has worked for me. Could I please ask you a quick question? My dough always seems much stickier than yours despite following your instructions. My bread always turns out quite flat, instead of rising up high. Could you also tell me how many ounces of yeast you use please, rather than a tablespoon? I'm worried about adding more flour in case the bread has a dry consistency. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you! (I wish I could post a photo of mine so you can see it!)
Hello! Regarding the yeast, it is .5 ounces (dry equivalent to Tablespoon). A couple ideas: Make sure your water is about 105°. Too hot can kill the yeast. Keep in mind that honey is also sweeter than table sugar. I would stick with honey if you can. Hi there I really like your video the way you explain it! I want to have a go and make it. My oven is an electric one, do you think I can have the same result? Because I heard to make bread the type of oven matter. I will leave a comment when i make it. Fingers crossed 🤞. Take care 🙂
This looks nice and easy. Is there a link to a written recipe? I don't see it in the description box. Also: do you use bread flour or all purpose for the bread? I'm assuming bread but maybe missed that. I've normally used another recipe but it takes awhile. Trumpets starts tonight so I don't have time to fiddle around with a long challah. #Yeshuaisthereasonforitall :) P.s. I noticed the same thing about your flour measuring. Ha!
I use all purpose flour. The recipe is at the top of the comments. If you don’t find it, let me know. In addition, I plan to make a video today on making a round Challah (for the crown).
@@etsah2551 I found it, thanks. It wasn't at the top but I scrolled through and found it. I think there is a way that you can pin that comment to the top though ?? Yes, definitely round one for this weekend - and cinnamon sugar on top. I'm debating between the six and the eight strand (which is the same as the four strand only in pairs) version.
To be honest, I’ve never noticed. I’m pretty sure it would turn out the same, only because I’m sure I’ve had all kinds of yeast, and I’ve never noticed. 😂
Can you substitute unsweetened apple sauce for the oil? I know you can sub it in baking but I don’t know if it possible to switch it out in bread. My mother is on meds for her heart & arteries. She also has cancer so we’re trying to keep things as healthy as possible. That’s a lot of extra fat we don’t need. Thanks!
Wow, hm... I honestly don't know. I understand your dilemma... I have cancer as well, and try to keep low on fat. My suggestion is to make half a loaf (so you don't waste much), and see what happens. I have a feeling it would do well. Let me know how it turns out, as I would be interested in trying it for myself. Shalom and blessings of healing for your mother. You are a blessing to her.
I don’t think it will make much difference. I really never pay attention to what kind of yeast I have... I probably should 😂, but it all seems to work out fine for me. I hope it does for you as well.
Six strand braid. Take the first strand from L pinch it on top of next R, continue until the last strand is at the bottom, start braiding, take the last strand on R go over to L……
@@etsah2551 thank you!! challah bread is my favourite bread. I usually buy it from a Jewish bakery, but it's not that close to where I live and I never thought to try and make it. Thanks again, would love to see more recipes from you God willing 🙏🏾
Yes! I have a video on that... one of my most recent ones, on making a round loaf for Feast of Trumpets or Rosh HaSahana. If you don’t see it, I’ll post the link.
You might see if the water is too hot. If you can measure the temperature, it should be about 105 °. You might make sure the yeast is not too old. I think those might be the only things affecting texture. Hoping that helps ❤️
@@etsah2551 Yes! After changing those two things my dough fluffs up now! Now I just really struggle with the bottom burning before the top cooks well. I have a conventional oven so I’m not sure if that affects it. I’ve been playing around with the temperature, the lowest I’ve had it at is around 250º. Despite this, I use your recipe every Sabbath

You’re going to do great! I just know it!
If you use hot water doesn't it kill the yeast?
Skip the butter stuff, it would make the bread not kosher for Shabbat. So if you're Jewish you can't use it.
if you're eating fleischig on shabbes, that would be true.
Thank you for your information.
shabbat shalom ! 😇💜
Hi there I really like your video the way you explain it! I want to have a go and make it. My oven is an electric one, do you think I can have the same result? Because I heard to make bread the type of oven matter. I will leave a comment when i make it. Fingers crossed 🤞. Take care 🙂
My oven is electric as well. You should be just fine ❤️
👋 l make the recipe, but my dough was kind hard, and l see yours ,and look more softer l don't know what happen with my..
Maybe be careful as you measure the flour-just making sure it isn’t “packed”.
#Yeshuaisthereasonforitall :)
I just pinned the comment with the recipe again. Let me know if you do not see it.
Can you use regular yeast instead of rapid rising? And if you can, do you have to do anything differently?
To be honest, I’ve never noticed. I’m pretty sure it would turn out the same, only because I’m sure I’ve had all kinds of yeast, and I’ve never noticed. 😂
Found my answer - google said "you might want to just consider adding an extra 10 to 15 minutes for the rise/proof time.
Great!! ❤️
@@etsah2551 Thanks so much. Great idea. Prayers for you as well.
thank you for sharing. Can you use Active Dry yeast rather that Rapid Rise ? will it make any difference?
I don’t think it will make much difference. I really never pay attention to what kind of yeast I have... I probably should 😂, but it all seems to work out fine for me. I hope it does for you as well.
Etsah thank you!!! I’ll give it a try right now. thank you for responding so quickly. :-)
SHABBAT SHALOM DESDE COSTA RICA, TODAH POR FAVOR EN ESPAÑOL
Shabbat Shalom to you! ❤️
Six strand braid. Take the first strand from L pinch it on top of next R, continue until the last strand is at the bottom, start braiding, take the last strand on R go over to L……
This is 😎 no need to roll that makes the breadding
Добрий день дуже дчкую
This looks so lush!! I will be making it. Thank you
I pray it turns out great! It is a very simple recipe, but SO DELICIOUS!!!
@@etsah2551 thank you!! challah bread is my favourite bread. I usually buy it from a Jewish bakery, but it's not that close to where I live and I never thought to try and make it. Thanks again, would love to see more recipes from you God willing 🙏🏾
@@etsah2551 hey, did you use self raising flour xx
@@moremiad no, just all purpose
You use very hot water and then yeast but as I know hot water kills. Yeast . Could you describe this
Well, the water temp is from our tap water, which does not get much hotter than 105 degrees F. I’d keep it around that, of you can ❤️
Beautiful! And small recipe. 😁
That's why I like it! Easy peasy!
can you make this into a round loaf rather then braiding it?
and if so . how would i go about doing that?
Yes! I have a video on that... one of my most recent ones, on making a round loaf for Feast of Trumpets or Rosh HaSahana. If you don’t see it, I’ll post the link.
Can I ask about the Cross on the wall? Just Curious. I am a Christian. Love your videos. God Bless
I am a Believer in Yeshua (Jesus). ❤️
I did not include more info, as my keyboard was limited, but I am Follwer of Yeshua, and follow And honor Torah, celebrating the Feasts, etc.

@@marksilver9291 Amen! Bo, Yeshua, Bo!
@@marksilver9291 Awesome!
Surely very very very hot water is going to kill that yeast stone dead?
Yes, just hot tap (around 105 degrees)
hey what temp for the water exactly so i dont kill the yeast
Oh, goodness! I’m so sorry for the delay! I use just hot tap. Usually that’s between 100-105 degrees
What is the reason for flour on the baking pan???
It truly keeps it from sticking... even better than oil.
@@etsah2551 - I've heard too much flour prevents it from rising though
Hm... I have not had that issue. If it is a concern, you can likely just use oil spray.
Love it!!
Don’t you proof the yeast first?
I was always taught to never ever use very hot water with yeast, as it could kill it
105-110F
G-d bless you! Love the honey butter - delicious!
Thanks for comment that sent to my email
Mine never comes out this fluffy I don’t know why 😭
You might see if the water is too hot. If you can measure the temperature, it should be about 105 °. You might make sure the yeast is not too old. I think those might be the only things affecting texture. Hoping that helps ❤️
@@etsah2551 Yes! After changing those two things my dough fluffs up now! Now I just really struggle with the bottom burning before the top cooks well. I have a conventional oven so I’m not sure if that affects it. I’ve been playing around with the temperature, the lowest I’ve had it at is around 250º. Despite this, I use your recipe every Sabbath
Where are the quantities please ?!
What's with the cross on the wall?
I am Messianic. I was new to Torah, and I did not see the issue. I understand now. I try to be more thoughtFULL. I am learning.
