    When I was a missionary in Germany, we lived in a part of Cologne where there were many Turkish people. Every morning, the women gathered around a propane fueled flat iron and cooked this amazing bread. Despite our language differences, they would motion us over and gift us a hot round right off the iron! As we went about our day, we'd pick up a chocolate bar or a couple of bottles of lemon water or flowers and drop them by in return! Some of my best memories! Thanks for the recipe!

      It is a Turkish tradition to offer food to neighbors although it is a dying tradition among the young generation. Neighbors are important to Turkish families so they probably wanted to build a relationship with you. I'm sure they never expected you to return something in favor but you did it anyway. It is very nice of you.

    • @jenottens3680
      @jenottens3680 Год назад +26

      We sure appreciated their kindness! I'm from Texas and we recognize and reciprocate kindness and good manners. We bought our groceries from the Turkish shops and markets because the prices were better and the selection was always good. Occasionally we'd see some of our neighbors shopping together and we'd smile and wave discretely. It seems that a lot of the really good traditions are being left behind in today's world, and it's a shame. A few of us old "die hards" have taught our children to be polite, helpful, and attentive. That is, if you see someone who needs help or something that needs to be done, just do it, don't leave the garbage on the ground beside the can ect. Thanks for replying and giving me a better insight to some sweet ladies I once met! All the best and God bless! 🥰 @@tasadem20

      @@jenottens3680 I totally agree with you. I live in Los Angeles but we lived in Utah about 2 years ago for awhile and we were very shocked about how our neighbors were so much nicer over there. We lived in the same place for 8 years in LA and only knew a few people in our apartment but we met twice as much people in Utah in 6 months. Unfortunately people are very individualist in larger cities and I can understand that as living in a large city is way more stressful than living in less populated cities, and most people just go home to getaway from everything. They turn their head when they see you. I wish all neighbors say at least hello to each other. It is a small gesture but surely makes everyone day. God bless to you as well! ☺

      @@tasadem20 In India too neighbours came first until 70's. Any function, after the close relatives (parents, brothers and sisters, children etc.), neighbours were invited and then only other relatives and friends were invited if the function was big enough. Alas, all that is gone and now neighbours don't know each other let, alone talk to each other. And everyone complains about loneliness.

      Yeah, you can sometimes also find thicker flour tortillas. For me definitely thick is better. I've seen them made with butter and lard, but never with an oil+butter mixture. I will definitely try this recipe out. Plus for quesadillas you can probably already add the cheese after turning it the first time in the pan, and covering with a lid.

Sometimes we have other stuffings such as eggs, onions, cheese, mushroom or even banana. The best part is that you can eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner or supper. What irritates me most of all is the shelf life of store food, when I cook from natural products, it is stored in my refrigerator for 2-3 days, while bread from the store can lie for a week and not go bad. I don't know what the ba*tards are putting in there, but this slop is only good for bird food! 🥸

      @@FastEasyRecipes You are so right!! A lot of people don't realize all the hormones and anabolic steroids they give to animals are also used in certain medications. Yes!! Pharmaceutical companies too!! Its not a good thing that food lasts longer today. The reason is because of all the additives, preservatives and chemicals they are putting in just about everything. Also, I just learned that just because food has a sticker on it claiming its 100% natural and organic, think again because labeling is extremely misleading.

    Yes this is pretty much the same as Kerala Paratha in India. They use a more spectacular technique for stretching the dough, you roll i only partly, and then toss i on the table, it stretches like a pizza, it is very fast and the dough becomes very thin, translucent almost. Instead of rolling after adding the oil or ghee you crinkle it like a harmonica, and and make a snail, just like you do. When cooked, you push the sides together revealing all the separate layers, served immediately.
    So a comment on additives in industrial bread. It is all about the price people are willing to pay. Regarding keeping white bread in the fridge, that actually makes the bread go stale faster, better to keep it in the freezer or at room temperature.
    My local baker in Panaji, Goa, would bake fresh bread 2-3 times a day. The locals would not eat the morning batch at dinner time, it was no longer fresh. They where poor, but the quality of their produce, Live fish and shellfish, same day vegetables and fruit, live chickens butchered and skinned to order. No super markets back then, no freezers or fridges, except for beer.

    Freez them once cooldown, in a freezer bag. Make a pack of five. Bring one bag out when needed, warm it in the microwave, or keep it outside for an hour or two, then enjoy eating it after warming it according to your choice.

    We call it Malwi or rghayef in Morocco 🇲🇦. We serve it with Jam or honey and usual with moroccan menth Tee this is the sweet variation or we add a special chicken sauce with onions for the salt variation. ✌ great to see the similarities between countries. Bread stays basic food for several countries.

    Nice recipe! It is called "Katmer" in Turkey. You used a little more oil than what we usually use though but it is a personal preference. Chinese will also love this as it is pretty much Chinese scallions pancake without scallions :)
