More Laws on Separating Challah:
-Challah (with a blessing) should only be separated if at least 12 1/4 cups of flour is used. Many only recite a blessing if 16 1/2 cups of flour is used. Consult your rabbi.
-The challah should be separated before eating the bread from which it was taken. Many say it should be burnt as soon as possible, but it is not required to burn the challah before eating the bread.
-The challah and the bread from which it was taken should not be cooked together in the same oven.
-The burnt challah should be disposed of in a water-proof wrapping.

Thank you to the Abdelhaks!
I'm not jewish (Korean american protestant guy in his 30s) but this video was beautiful. Who knew a loaf of bread had such a deeper spiritual meaning! The idea that you must pray into the bread so that it becomes sacred and holy when served at the Shabbat dinner was moving. I think the bread is a symbol for the bread of life, which is Gods provision. This video taught me that God wants us to work hard to harvest wheat during the work week but have a day to rest and observe God's day. I felt it was so deep for u to say that even if we give something our all and fail at something, that effort and intentionality is sufficient enough to God
This looks like a wonderful recipe. Thanks so much. I really enjoy your RUclips videos. I'm a 'new' Jew (Grandmother was Jewish but my mother didn't practice) so I'm learning daily what it is to be a Jewish woman and your videos are excellent.
Love that your girls were there to help out ! Also, thank you for teaching them (and us) the meaning of Challah - great video! 🔥
I loved your explanation about where challahs came from and the Mother daughter team was adorable.
I learned so much from this video. I'm a Pastry Arts student, we have this Bread Project to be presented in class, I choose Challah as my project. Can't wait to share the knowledge in class!
Thank you from Germany!
thanks! not only is it not against tradition, it is an obligation. it's just that the woman gets first preference to do the mitzvah, but if she's not around/able, then the man must do it. (it's an easy recipe - give it a go! :)
Thank you for teaching us and being a blessing to our lives
I come from a Jewish father and a Christian mother. I'm a practicing Christian but I love learning about and connecting more with my Jewish heritage. Your videos are one of my favorite ways to do that! Thanks so much for making Judaism come alive! And of course that Challah looks delicious!
I would like to try baking a challah. I've watched several recipes. It was such a pleasure to hear you pronounce the "CH" properly and not as an "H". Most importantly this looks delicious and I can't wait to try it. I wish you and your family a good shabbat.
Hope you enjoy
I am made this recipe and it turned out wonderful. Thank you!!!
Reminds me of the wonderful days when my children were small and we made Challah every Friday for dinner after sunset....
This recipe was awesome! I've never made my own Challah before so i was greatly surprised by how well it worked out! I changed it up a little bit though. I left out the raisins and walnuts (sadly) and before I rolled them into cylinders I flattened the dough out, brushed with heavy cream and sprinkled in cinnamon sugar. I rolled them back up into cylinders and braided and baked the way you directed. This way I had cinnamon sugar on the inside as well as sprinkled on the outside. I even made glaze from butter and sugar. Next time I think I will add in the raisins too!
Shalom. I love making Challah. HaShem bless you and your family.
This was awesome!!! Thank you for the effort you put into making this video!
Thank you so much for all the effort you have put into Jew in the City. I often recommend this to my friends as an example of a good Orthodox Jewish channel and also a sample of the Sephardic minhag. Are there any books you could recommend me to learn and understand more about the Sephardic minhag. I am an Arab but also fluent in Hebrew and can read it and enjoy studying different people. Thank you again for the excellent channel.
No doubt the earthquake a 0;45 occurs b/c the children said yes when asked to help?
I look at so many challah recipes another cames out very hard and the bread is impossible to cut etc, and this one is the best, thank you so much for the recipe, by the way you have a beautiful family;)
This is a great recipe! I just made my first ever challah (video on my channel), and it was so nice to learn more about it here -- thanks for the video!
Still my favorite recipe! Thank you!
This chanel is just plain in simple CUTE ! I love it !
I'll try to get your challah into UT Austin's Challah for Hunger! It's amazing every week to see college age Jewish women getting to take on a new mitzvah. You really are changing the world!
to honor my ancestor's and Jewish heritage, i'll be making some Jewish dishes during the next few weeks and next month. . I will try and make this challah recipe, and ask my mom or dad for my great grandmother's matzoh ball soup recipe.
yes, I was raised the same! my husband and I are looking into finding a Temple near us, and go to Temple on Saturdays and then the next week go to Church on a Sunday...I crave to learn more.
Can't wait to try this! Thanks!
Never tried it with walnuts and raisins, so I think I will give this a try!
Hope you enjoy
adorable! definitely trying this recipe for shabbos.
I love this recipe my family loves it
Thanks for the reply JITC! Maybe I will, my mom has made challah plenty of times but I think it's always been plain, because there's not been any large amount of sweetness to it, yours sounds delicious!
Teehee this is almost the same as my mom's recipe. Though instead of choco chips she puts orange juice and zest (from a squeezed orange). It's amazing. ♡♡♡ Thanks for making me dream about challah as I'm so far away from home and without an oven hehe.
I enjoyed your video. Really good.
This was beautiful👍💖
I love your challah recipe.
thank you! sephardic jews are strict about not having it be too sweet, but my LOR eats my challah with hamotzi! (but everyone should consult their own rabbi of course!)
Thank you for the message.
love it! will definitely try it. and gurl, You're BEAUTIFUL!!!
This was such an awesome video.
I love your channel
Shalom, nice job
Beautiful cinnamon raisin walnut Challah recipe it looks delicious yummy ✌️✨💖🍀🙏🏼
Hermosa canela con pasas de uva y challah, la receta se ve deliciosa y deliciosa ✌️✨💖🍀🙏🏼
I would want to try this recipe but I think Id like a deeper cinnamon flavour. How much cinnamon do you think I should add to the dough mixture considering the volume this recipe yields?
you seem to be a very intelligent and well put together woman
I work with jewish people and many are orthodox and your videos help me so much to learn about their religion more! So interesting! Plus I love jewish names!!!!!! Love the videos can't wait for more!!!!!!(:
Just watched, ‘the chosen’ which brought me here. :)
Can the recipe be lessened if you don't want to make 6-8 loaves?
what size mixing bowl would you recommend for this recipe?
Hi Allison! This video is more that 7 years old, yet - you look so stylish. You have such a timeless style 😊 Love your belt. And the girls must be so grown up now. I love watching your videos. The old ones and the new ones. In the last few years - I also have an RUclips channel - if you want to have a look at some of my videos - you can find some cute ones there - I'm sure. I'm going to make that challah today. Best regards from Ontario 😘
lovely! very clever video.
This looks delicious. Not that I ever really cook for myself, but this did make me wonder; would it be against tradition for a single Jewish man to prepare this bread in the same way?
thanks so much!
I make my own challah and I'm catholic and we eat it for Easter and I say my prayers on my bread as you do. I'm not Jewish but I respect your ways and also think its a good idea to say a prayer I say it for the family and those who need prayer ,also the sick and the people who don't know they even need a prayer . God is God there is someone looking down on us God Bless us all......
2019,,,,,,,,,,,,,beautiful video!!!
The best recipe!
your recepie is very kind and exotic. it's more like a raisin babka. uselly there shouldn't be add honey at all because it decreases the leavening of the dough. but I gotta tell you that it seems to be very delicious after baked
this recipe was adapted from a raisin challah recipe. i added the honey, changed the amount of salt, sugar, added the walnuts and cinnamon. i don't know the rules of baking chemistry, but i'll tell you - it's AWESOME.
and I forgot to mention that your kids are adorable
Interesting !
Shalom form from so cal
Well done !
thanks!!
Gorgeous challah, gorgeous religious ladies.
which part of your family is Jewish? and good question - but the words are spelled differently: challah with a "chet" and kallah with a "caf."
thanks!
my father's side. His grandparents and mother. My great grand parents came over from Russia in in 1916 I think? Before 1920 anyway. My father's father didn't want to convert,to marry my grandmother, so the only one who really stayed practicing was my great gram and and great grandfather. She gave the soup recipe to my mom. I think my father has it too... I have a few memories of being 5 or 6, and having matzoh soup, and gefilte fish, and chopped chicken liver....
I wish I could break this down into 2 loafs.
Divide the recipe in half
to honor my ancestor's and Jewish heritage, i'll be making some Jewish dishes during the next few weeks and next month. . I will try and make this challah recipe, and ask my mom or dad for my great grandmother's matzoh ball soup recipe.
Also, an Orthodox girl who gets engaged is called a Kallah, does that term have any significance to making the Challah bread, since it's primarily a woman's task? Or do they just happen to coincidentally sound the same.
Hi, the recipe sounds great, but I think it is mezonos, there is not enough water to balance out the sugar/honey/oil/raisins/eggs and walnuts, check with you LOR.
how i get in here!? good video lol
I enjoy these explanations of Jewish community
I am making it now with you guys for tomorrow Sabbath. 😀
does your hubby have jewish ancestry too?
Instead of burning the piece of bread, why can't you give it so someone in need? I understand the tradition, but It seems a bit wasteful to me.
I love being Jewish
Is it really edible?
I loved your recipe, however, I was a little unnerved that you made your video like Bewitched.
Thank you for allowing us a look into your private, spiritual lives.
Make the hebrew blessing a bit larger - hard to read it.
Damn, this is wholesome
:)
This is the fanciest Jewish woman I've ever seen.
