  • We finally get our hands on the new mid-engine 2020 Corvette Stingray. In this video review of the Corvette C8, Kurt Niebuhr walks us through the interior, the results from our test track and what it's like to drive.
    With a mid-engine design and low price, the 2020 Corvette C8 promises a lot. Fortunately, it delivers. The C8 is enormous fun to drive on mountain roads, quick on our test track and comfortable on the daily commute. This Corvette is a true working-class sports car that makes us question the value of costlier competition.
    For 2020, the Corvette has undergone the most radical redesign in its 67-year history. Believing that they had squeezed every ounce of performance they could from the Corvette's classic front-engine and rear-drive layout, Chevrolet's engineers decided a new mid-engine layout was the way to go for its inherent advantages in weight distribution. Risky? Yes. But the result is hugely impressive.
    It's rare to see a car, let alone an institution like the Corvette, so radically transformed. But Chevrolet has taken its performance icon and improved it in nearly every way. It's bonkers fast, handles beautifully, and still manages traffic and daily errands. The styling may be controversial, but its price and performance certainly are not.
    In terms of performance, the Corvette C8 equals or outshines cars costing two to three times as much. The new 6.2-liter V8 and dual-clutch automatic transmission combo is formidable on the track but offers plenty of oomph and smooth operation in nearly any condition. The new Corvette also imparts more information about its handling balance and grip, thereby giving its driver more confidence in taking the car up to its handling limits.
    As with past Corvettes, the C8 is practical for both daily driving and long trips. Although the total cargo area isn't as usable as before, it's still large enough to fit a few pieces of luggage. There's still space for the coupe's removable targa roof panel top in the rear, and the lack of an engine up front means there's a small frunk in the nose. The new interior has a sharp, driver-focused design and fine materials throughout. A Corvette convertible is on its way, too.
    It's easy to be impressed by the new Corvette C8. Its performance rivals that of more expensive sports cars, yet the Corvette is still everyday comfortable and practical. But it's the performance that amazes the most with easily explorable yet considerable limits. The transformation has been nothing short of shocking.

      Edmunds why were your performance number so significantly slower than what GM promised and the big 3 car mags (C&D, MT, R&T) found? Your zero to 60 at 3,2 is significantly slower than the 2.8 - 2.9 sec found elsewhere. And your 1/4 mile is slower too. What would you attribute to this difference?

      From what I've heard automatic transmissions these days can out perform even the most experienced manual users. The shifting is instantaneous and smart. I've beaten people in an automatic over their manual. (Though they could just be lousy at it).
      I am man enough to admit I hate the manual transmission of the corvette. It is one of the most unforgiving transmissions I've ever used. Now I am not the best at manual, but I learned on a corvette specifically because my instructor told me if I can learn to drive stick on a Vette I can drive stick on anything. That says something about how technical a Vette can be.

      @guggyp 4 года назад +30

      shadowreaver752 the point of a new sports car and this entry level super car is to go FAST. Not engagingly slow. I drive a GT3 with PDK. Why would you buy a fast car THEN BUY the SLOWER model? If you want to row the gears buy a Miata . There’s no race car with a manual. There’s nothing magic about a manual especially in traffic. Plus the new manuals have rev matching which take out the heel toeing engagement. This exactly why supercar manufacturers don’t offer manuals

    • @guggyp
      @guggyp 4 года назад +8

      Alklazaris you’re completely correct. The manual is for slower drivers . The Porsche GT3 manual is more than a half second slower to 60 than the PDK version. The new dual clutch transmissions are just magic. Lewis Hamilton does NOT have a manual in his F1 car. Ferrari doesn’t even make one. This car will be great with the Dual Clutch transmission. And it will blow away any guy pushing in his clutch pedal

      Yeah I'm so glad that it is naturally aspirated, in fact, as a "do it yourself" kind of guy, I think I even prefer this version to the more complex and heavy hybrid version that is supposedly coming out. It's about time that America got a modern mid-engine sports car to compete with the European cars. A manual option would have been the cherry on top but you can't have everything.

      @@pontiacGXPfan I think you misinterpreted my comment. I mean that there are other mid engine cars, but most of them are old cars. It's nice to have a mainstream, modern mid engine car that is attainable. I think that front engine cars can also be great, I mean, probably 97% of all cars people drive in the USA is front engined.
      If you do want to get technical though, the mid-engine design layout is "newer" than the front layout and is typically what the more advanced and expensive supercars go for because that layout is more advantageous for handing. It's probably just easier for the big auto makers here to follow the trend and keep the costs of manufacturing down. All the more reason to give Chevrolet praise for bucking the trend and making an affordable American supercar

I loved the car from the moment Mark Reuss revealed the 0-60, then especially the PRICE (the GASPS in the crowd)! I sort of liked it (wanted to, but was concerned about $$) before the official reveal- when all the 'leaks' were out. Perfect?, NO. But my slight annoyances like it weighing 3600lb, and big @$$, and no manual are miniscule compared to the EXTREME value, performance, and exoticism it brings for the $. With all the recent GM screw-ups, I was concerned with this gen. Corvette, NOT ANYMORE!! Check out where Ford is going with the Mustang Name- electric soccermom crossover, Muahaha! We've used the term "squircle" in engineering for a long time to model various phenomena, including flow nets under dams and concrete slab cracking. Also a useful concept in all branches of engineering that analyze materials stress, such as Structural, Civil, Automotive, Aerospace, and Mechanical Engineering. There's a squircle principle that we use when meshing finite element models to calculate material stresses. Essentially, we create a net of curvilinear quadrilaterals where the corners are orthogonal and the rough midpoints of the four curved lines of the elements in the net are tangent to inscribed circles. The better it's done, the more accurate the resulting matrix stress analysis is in representing the actual stress that the material will see.

    One important thing about the Corvette!!
    I forgot the head designers name, but he was with Jay Leno and he mentioned that each new corvette is intentionally slowed at first so that drivers aren’t red lining it and messing up the engine and transmission. It’s meant to go easy on the motor so it will last longer. That being said, it will be “faster” after the engine gets worn in.
    Honestly, I think this is great. I didn’t even consider nerfing a car. Great thinking on Chevy’s part.

    I've been saying this since this thing was announced. Chevy really changed the performance car landscape with this thing. They built an affordable (relative to the competition) mid-engine sports car that's superior to pretty much everything in its price range. Heck even other mid-engine cars aren't really looking that compelling. Lotus Evora 400 & 410 come to mind which are performance monsters but they're not that great interior and feature wise. Porsche has Cayman which might be nicer on the inside, but down on power.

      Once everyone owns this vehicle, the Corvette C8 will lose the hype. The Porsche Cayman offers a manual and falls into a Grand Tourer. The GT4 Cayman has very similar performance and a regular person driving on the freeway really not going to test the benchmarks. Lotus Evora uses a minimalist direction in their interior design to save weight and people who drive sport cars find Evora more thrilling getting rid of the luxury items . You don't really see Evora's on the road. Evora GT has similar performance a the GT4 Cayman.
      Corvette targets the Corvette consumer. If someone wanted a lower end supercar, Nissan GT-R, Mercedes GT AMG, and Audi R8 is in that market.

      C7 handles better than the C8 (higher lateral G's etc). This information is straight from GM Engineers that built and tested the C8. But the C8 will ultimately be a faster car due to its better power to weight ratio.
      But the C7 is a great handling car (pulled 1.16 lateral Gs). The highest of any car tested by many magazines.It will be interesting to see what the C8, ZO6 can do once it comes out. So far GM has been pretty quiet as far as track times for the base model C8. I believe that's because the times are not as good as people had hoped.

      And the method by which he did, was to be condescending to manuals. Oh that's an intelligent approach to the subject. Not. But instead he assumed everyone else should want the same thing he wants, for the reasons he wanted it. The C8 should be offered with a manual. The new Supra should be offered with a manual. Every performance sports car should be offered with a manual. They are less problematic, less expensive, simpler, durable, offer a connection with the car that no auto will ever be able to replicate. They are still more efficient than most autos. The reason some autos do better is merely because the gearing is taller on the autos which keeps the RPM lower.

    Excellent. And I agree with you about the interior fabric and seats. Go for the black option inside.
