- Welcome to 'EAVY CONTRAST, a series where I will try to paint miniatures
as close as possible (to the best of my ability) to the 'Eavy Metal
paint jobs using Contrast Paints and Highlights.
And in this episode I paint one of my favourite minis ever, SKINKS!

You are such a talented artist and a wonderful teacher. Thank you once again!
Thank you for watching mate 😘
This is a god send. I went back and bought a bunch of lizardmen fantasy miniatures but wanted to capture the classic eavy metal style I used to see on the boxes as a kid. This seems like something achievable which I can attempt 🙌 thank you!
Happy to help!
Best choice of army, congratulations. Might Sotek touch you with his forked tongue
He painted blue! He painted blue!! Kill it with fire!!!😱
Brutal juan, brutal. El azul queda super bonito y contrasta genial con el rojo, y las feathers con feathering quedan muy guays 🤣
Not only that he also said "Nice blue" at 7:31
😂😂
@@Alan-pn8nu so true hahahaha
Makes me wanna start a new army
YEAH!! DO IT, DO IT!
Ahahahah the initial skit is almost the best part of the video!
ALMOST?!! In all honesty you can skip the rest, right now I'm making the tutorials as an excuse to make funny intros.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ahahah you are a treasure of this community
Thanks mate 😘
Looks unbelievable, highlight after highlight, really adds up. Epitome of acrylic paint use!
Thanks
This intro is up there with the best! 🤣👌
Thanks mate 😘
that base looks so good I can't even tell you dislike basing 😜
stunning paint job!
Thanks 😘
You nailed it! Thank you so much!
Thank you for watching 😘
Nice work Juan, I'll try this out on my wee boys.
YES!!
LOL at the first 45 seconds. Juan you sir are a LEGEND 👏👌😆
Thanks mate 😘
Again great tutorial :) I really wanted see how you achieved effects on base actually but even this is nice
The base is done with the ground painted with Vallejo US Dark Green, drybrush with Russian Tank Crew 2, wash with a 50-50 Athonian - Nuln Oil, then repeat the Highlights with the same colour but with stippling and glazing.
The Rocks are a Basecoat of Eshin Grey with Highlights of Celestra Grey Drybrush, Nuln Oil, then back to Celestra edge highlights and finally Ulthuan Grey.
Then I applied AK Interactive Moss Deposits Enamel randomly and blended it with Odorless Thinner.
Hope that helps!
Thank you , Juan .
😘
Beautiful teal. I think I've got an old saurus warrior in my pile of shame. Fantastic opportunity to use this color scheme.
YES!!
Outstanding work! I love how you take it to the next level with mixes of contrast paints. I need to start doing some mixing. Oh and LOL at that intro 😂
Thanks mate 😘
Absolutely love this video mate!!! Excellently made, very High painting quality, and great humour along the way. You’ve made me subscribe! Thank you.
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
SUBS FOR THE SUBS THRONE
One of my favourite tutorials and one of the funniest so far mate, your stuff just gets better and better
Thanks mate, that really means a lot 😘😘
Another amazing piece of work and cracking video with the right amount of info and close ups to really help us aspiring painters, thanks so much for taking time to share 👍
Thank you for watching 😘
Absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks
I burst out laughing so hard at the intro that my wife came in from the kitchen to find out what was going on.
😂😂😂
This is another excellent guide which I'm currently using to complete a commission to paint the entire set of Starblood Stalkers. However, two things that might help those of us who are less precise than the good Mr Hidalgo. The first is to be very careful mixing the Akhelian Green and Aethermatic blue at the start. I think I put too much Akhelian Green into my mix, and as a result Baharroth Blue didn't match it at all. I ended up having to basically re-layer the entire mini in Baharroth Blue. Not the end of the world, and entirely my fault, but worth watching out for. The second tip is that I'm far too heavy handed with my edge and volumetric highlights, as I lack the brush control seen in this video. However I was able to knock back the final highlights by applying an all over wash of the original Akhelian/Aethermatic mix (in the correct ratio this time!) diluted in quite a lot of contrast medium. This gently tinted the mini, re-shaded it slightly, and blended in my over zealous highlights which had made the models look a bit washed out and over-bright. I was then able to carefully re-establish the brightest points with careful dots of Ulthuan Grey. Wow, that was a lot of blather. But hopefully it'll be useful to some other clumsy idiot! :)
Fantastic tips!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks! Necessity is the mother of invention! :)
Loving that contrast Bronze! Totally stealing that. Just a great job overall...as usual. Even if it is blue ;).
TEAL, IT'S TEAL 😂
Just watched this again as I'm about to paint them all. Would love to see how you have done the other models from this box!
The plan was to do the chameleon but life got in the way sadly
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures that would be cool to see! I hope you get a chance to come back to it at some point. All the best
Paint job looks great ☺️👍
Thanks 😘
Great work as always, stunning brush control!
Thanks 😘
As always love these short 40 second videos :D
That's the only good part 😂
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures but you kind of tricked us this time...some smaller good bits as well in the middle of the 'boring' parts :) jokes aside great video! This warband is so nice I am think of getting it for a while now.
They are very nice sculpts. The whole Underworlds catalog is magnificent
Que maravilla de eslizon. Sotek rules!!!.
Sin duda alguna!
Great work man!
Thanks 😘
that mic drop moment was priceless haha
It's very important to always be humble
Juan you are a true artist. I don't really like contrasts as paints and now I really wish to buy the colors in this video just to try and paint the mini as you did.
Thanks, you can skip a few if you follow my other How to Paint - Lizardmen Skin video that gets an almost identical result but using traditional paints.
Fantastic!
Thanks
Love these models so much! Looks awesome and can't wait to try it!
Thanks, I'm very happy with the Paintjob and the minis are stunning
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures do you think the skin colours would work with a grey seer base instead of corax white?
Yes
Heck yeah! Glad to see this!
Thanks
No thank you! Your paint guides are relaxing and informative! Used the Contrast techniques you made for my Starblood Stalkers. They look good and that’s because you showed how! Keep it up good sir!
Thanks mate 😘
Superb!
Thanks
Love your work mate!
Thanks 😘
Flat out amazing. Thank you for sharing! Question for you caballero: Do you use Contrast Paints because you prefer them? From the comments below I gather you don't like the traditional way of basecoating (a la "Two thin coats," etc.). So does Contrast paint solve that for you? Or is this more a way for you to try something new and innovate, just to see what is possible?
It's just fun and yeah I do hate basecoating but that's not an issue really
Great opening!
Thanks 😂
Nice! Tok in its splendid teal :) any plans for Otapatl the chameleon skink?
Maybe, thinking about what to do with him
Loved it!
Thanks
Amazing
Thanks
Thank you Juan for this masterclass. Just one question. I noticed you've used the same brush for the contrast and for highlighting. What number and brand of brush did you use?
Rosemary and Co series 33 size 3
Best intro so far 🤣
Thanks 😘
Esperaba con ganas este video!!
Me alegro!!!
Awazing job. I am following your video for some old models. I am new to contrast paints and I can't get a clean coat like you. My result with the contrast layer is always dirty. Any advice?
Watch my Contrast Technique video. That will help you
Wow that skit was way to funny.
Thanks 😂
2 minutes into AOS and chill and he gives you this look 0:33
😂😂
Amazing video Juan! Any chance you will be doing the other lizards from the warband that are in different colours?
Different colours??!! Is that come kind of heresy I cannot understand?
*ANGRY SNAKE-GOD NOISES*
Thanks a lot for this great tutorial! What do you think of the new Huanchi Hunters from Warcry ? I would love to see your take on the green skin of the Chameleon Skinks!
I have one for a video but I will do it orange. Sorry but not sorry
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I look forward to this!
I think I'm going to use these blues and recipes for the majority of my Seraphon army. I think Saurus and and Skinks would look good like this. Wondering if you could do Saurus, similar to what you've done here.
They will look AMAZING
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Oooh, have you done anything that could be used for Chameleon Skinks skin? Like a good recipe for the contrast.
@nocturnalarrow4678 check my Orange video, that's how I do mine
I feel attacked.
Also, fucking great paint job, Juan. If you need another virgin to sacrifice, I guess I'll volunteer.
How do you think the model would look like, primed with Wraithbone? I like the warm an natural tone it gives to skin but since blue is a cold colour that could also get a slight green tint, when painted over a slightly beige surface. I think I will have to try for myself. Love the video though, as always.
I think your assessment is right but I encourage you to give it a try anyway
Precioso😊
Gracias 😘
Juan Hidalgo : Because Red, is the color of Sotek.
GW : Sotek Green Bitchezzz
😂😂 so true
Loved this one! You crack me up. =D Any chance we can see a short tutorial on the base too?
Maybe at some point, but I already answered in the comments how to paint it
Great!!! 😁😁👌👌
Gracias guapo 😘
Amazing work! Would you mind sharing how you did the base?
The base is done with the ground painted with Vallejo US Dark Green, drybrush with Russian Tank Crew 2, wash with a 50-50 Athonian - Nuln Oil, then repeat the Highlights with the same colour but with stippling and glazing.
The Rocks are a Basecoat of Eshin Grey with Highlights of Celestra Grey Drybrush, Nuln Oil, then back to Celestra edge highlights and finally Ulthuan Grey.

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures grc!!! Slds y éxito
Awesome Juan, (I thought you hate blue?)
TEAL, this is TEAL
😂😂
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures
Oh, ok….
I am so tempted to create a seraphon army, but finding units is a bit of a challenge here
Best army!
I’m not a good painter but painting lizardmen for my blood bowl team was and is fun.
I find them some of the most fun minis to paint
Question about your step order. It seems you do (mostly) a section at a time to a finished standard, then go to the next section. Currently, I do all my base coats on the whole model, then all the shades, then all the highlights. Whats your feeling on the advantages of doing primer to finished section by section?
With Contrast I always do the largest section first, because if I want a uniform and smooth layer as possible I cannot be dealing with not touching previously painted areas.
I also paint full steps from inside out, because that's the way of getting the best and cleanest results.
That being said, you do you. If it works it's the right way
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturesMakes sense, as I don't use a huge amount of contrast paints. I will try your step order on some termagaunts I haven't decided how to paint yet, and will use that as an excuse to use more contrast paint. Thanks for the input.
Happy to help
Juan is there any news on the Vallejo's xpress paints and their release?
You should ask Vallejo themselves, sorry. The only thing I know is November to January depending on where you live
Would you ever do the Black Templars army in the eavy metal style?
No, there is absolutely no reason to do them. I already have THREE black space marines videos with different styles, just use one of those combined with the How to Paint - Bone Armour
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures oh okay cool, thank you :)
You’re a wizard Juan
Should I expect for my owl to come soon? Super excited!

Hii, are You going to paint Lord Kroak?
I'm going to get him for sure, already shipped. Not sure if I'm going to paint him though
What cameras do you use ?
Canon M50, you have a link to it in the description (it's the generic Amazon link)
@JuanHidalgo can you do one on Adeptus Mechanicus 🙏🙏🙏
At some point I will
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank You!

The Chaoslord next?
Not sure yet
As long you didn't do him, he is always watching you. DA DA daaaaaaaaaaa
Please do the new Kroak!
Im thinking about it
Nice job. But the first color is missing from your listing😉
It's the primer spray, I never list them.
But you are technically correct and we all know that's the best kind of correct
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures no, not the primer. The Aethermatic Blue.
DAMN
I will take that L with shame
Today I thought I have all colors to try your technique. But at the moment I was ready to paint, I was wondering why one paint is missing 🤣
Good catch, I try to not miss anything but in the end I'm just an extremely handsome, tall and intelligent human
Don't misunderstand my comment... i really love lizardmen and i've enjoied a lot this video but... is the cursed city series already gone?
No, why would it be?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 'cause at the beginning the comment was like" where the hell is my cursed city tutorial ?!" then i went for some more friendly :)
The plan was never to do them all in a row, they will come, just be patient
What is the color of the weapon?
Same as all the gold
What miniature is that, can anyone send me a link?
Part of the Seraphon Underworlds Warband
One of your favorite armies is blue? 😱
TEAL, IT'S TEAL

2 and 3, mostly 3
