  • From one of their fabulous London concerts in recent years, we see John Wilson and his wonderful orchestra, chorus and soloists in a toe-tapping number "Hello Dolly!" number. It comes from John Wilson's "Hooray for Hollywood!" programme in the 2011 Proms season where it received rapturous applause from the 5000-strong Royal Albert Hall audience.

      He was a wonderful, brilliant musician and composer. He appeared onstage in 2002 with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles when I sang with the group, and sang this little-known song from The Grand Tour. Such a kind-hearted and gracious man. ruclips.net/video/Hdd0QM7egVc/видео.html

      Yes I believe Mr Wilson did not use the Broadway orchestrations but the expanded Hollywood film version that starred Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford with a glorious cameo by Louis Armstrong who originally made the title song a hit. The original producer wanted the song cut during out of town previews - he could not stand it - so Jerry Herman had the song covered by Louis Armstrong, it soon became a hit on the radio, so there was no way the song could be dropped from the show.

    The reason why the orchestration for this version is so amazing is because the arrangement is from the Movie version, not the Broadway version. And, as in every Streisand movie musical, the orchestrations were magnificent and the orchestrators pushed themselves to do the best work they ever did. So thrilled that so many of you who wrote below noted that the orchestration was so outstanding. Alfred Newman was the musical director on the movie, but if you see the movie credits, there were approximately 9 of the best orchestrators in Hollywood who worked on the arrangements on the various songs in the film. One you may notice, was Alexander Courage, who incidentally, wrote the famous Star Trek theme from the tv show in the 60s. I loved the opening tenor, but was not thrilled with the female singer (very weak) in red dress (the Streisand part). Oh, well. The rest of it was great. Enjoy!!!!

    • @RichardBrennan
      @RichardBrennan 6 лет назад

      Amen to all of it. I will just add that by this time Alfred had handed his baton over to his brother Lionel at 20th Century Fox. Lionel Newman and Lennie Hayton did the Dolly arrangements - probably with some input from Roger Edens - Dolly producer and former MGM music director.

      Well, nobody can top Streisand for vocals, but I thought this singer was quite good. She forgot the words at 4:37, "To town we'll trot to a smoky spot," and substituted another line till she got herself right back on track.

    • @BeaglyBeagle488
      @BeaglyBeagle488 6 лет назад

      This is an amazing comment - I didn't know who the orchestrators were, just that it's a h*ck of a lot better than what Tams sends out, which is still the 1960's orchestration only with the keys updated for Dolly so she''s not in Carol Channing baritone range. Also, as to the "forgotten lyric" - The line is "that Sunday shine is a certain sign", in the official licensed score (at least, the US version).

    i love that John Wilson uses the film orchestrations (as he usually does) for Broadway performances. he does the same for West Side Story, King and I, Carousel, etc. the films utilized a large orchestra and that fits the Prom.

    O meu Deus! Janeiro de 1975, eu com 15 anos passando minhas férias de verão em Fortaleza, capital do estado do Ceará, Brasil, encontro na discoteca de meu tio o vinil com todas canções deste musical magnífico, Hello Dolly!, que havia assistido na TV aberta um ano antes.
    Imediatamente consegui uma fita cassete e gravei todo o LP e ao retornar das férias ao Rio de Janeiro passei a ouvir incansavelmente até decorar de ouvido esta do vídeo, e ainda It Takes A Woman e, claro, Hello Dolly! Pra mim o melhor musical com a história mais bonita que assisti até hoje.
    E parabéns para os músicos da orquestra e seu maestro pela reedição fidelissima da música e pela brilhante interpretação de todos os cantores no vídeo.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    I've literally listened to this version at least 100 times, and I just now realized that the lead female singer changed a line - at 4:37 she sings, "That Sunday shine is a certain sign that the girls are hot as a fuse" when the line is actually, "To town we'll trot to a smoky spot where the girls are hot as a fuse." I love this version but I did just notice that.

Of course, Barbra Streisand did the signatory work originally in the film, "Hello Dolly," but when we have an ensemble like this she is not truly missed though this was not one of the songs she sang.
