Conclusion: if there's one thing the British public can all rally around and unite for, it's Mary Poppins
And a few other songs and movies. Such as Monty Python.
With yank-penned tunes, no less.
Luke Matthews I’d also add Wallace and Gromit and Blackadder to that roster.
“The world” can rally around this. Americans adore Mary Poppins
I wish she would come and save us from Brexit. Where’s a fictional flying Victorian nanny when you really need one?
This brought tears to my eyes... Its a beautiful thing when a massive group of people all sing and share a love for something forever etched in our childhoods
SarahG watching at Mary poppins sings Pink Floyd
Omg absolutely
grand merci au peuple britannique quel dommage qu'il soit comme nous avec des politiques pas à la hauteur
@@lisamone59621
Besides the actual Coronation, and possibly Monty Python, this is the most British thing I've ever seen.
and a nice cup o'tea!
That guy with the umbrella at 7:10 - Classic.
Thug life.
Glenn Cook 😂 😂 😂 He's loving life

Ok
Oh my god I completely missed that. What an absolute legend

Just saw this 😂😂😂 Oh my God

That man's energy gives me life! 🙌
What a propeller!
Anyone else watching this masterpiece in 2021?!
Yep.
Yes💖
Yup
Yes, sang along with them.
Yes!
Anyone else cry when everyone was singing feed the birds?
Yes I did!
+Lauren Massey God damn birds ;( !! Please somebody just feed them so we could stop crying
+Lauren Massey I always cry at Lets go fly a kite...
+Lauren Massey omg love her.. its perfect..
it brings tears to my eyes
Feed the birds is one of the most emotional songs in film history. People all around Britain singing this together is amazing
For those of us that tear up at Feed the Birds, don't feel odd. We were fantastically manipulated by the composer's change of minor to major key. The resolution and release from the minor to the major is a release from sadness to joy and hope. The lyrics put you in the mood but it's the music doing it to us. It's musical composition at it's absolute finest. In my opinion.
nitetrane98 what abut if you start to cry at the first song
Laurline Da Costa you then will be reliving a wonderful childhood
Maybe up the dosage on your depression medicine?
nitetrane98 XD that was a good one XD

I was there in Hyde Park, and it had me at the last "tuppence a bag"... It was so emotional and an amazing expereience.
Wish I can attend the proms live some day :)
I honestly think there's nothing like seeing a love performance.
I think feed the birds is about the impoverished communities in the early 20th century london, the families with "bare nests" and those in the work houses. It was a message for compassion towards less fortunate than the middle class
@Benj Smith Productions tuppence means "two pennies" I believe, my Nan still says Shillings and tuppence. My Mum remembers the £1 note and Ha'pennies before they removed them from circulation.
Omg I guess that was an amazing experience congratulations
Thank you Sherman Brothers for a wonderful childhood
Had the vinyl album of this as a kid........
same here....mary Poppins was one of my fav movies as a child growing up in india.
man kind

The songs they wrote that made up my childhood, that I had no idea were theirs.
Nothing more British than a Mary Poppins suite, singing along then struck by emotion at Feed the Birds
This clip is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
Ziwei Miao so thats how you spell it !
Damn it, take all of my money! The bird woman is good. Moved me to tears to boot.
I love how they're united so well like a real family
Watching the original Mary Poppins and Saving Mr Banks, you get so much respect towards the Disney studio and towards P.L Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books. Although Travers hated Disney's Mary Poppins, if only she could see this. How the nation has come to love this flying nanny with a talking umbrella and carpet handbag.
If anyone has not seen Marry Poppins or Saving Mr Banks, well GO AND WATCH IT! Its amazing.
R.I.P Walt Disney and P.L Travers.
Yess i have been watching Saving Mr.Banks and makes me cry for the ending..😭
In real life, PL Travers said (years later) that it was a beautiful movie, but it didn't have anything to do with her original creation

@@roxy20231000 If only PL Travers had been "Laid" on a regular basis.
I have watched it and it left me feeling angry towards Disney 😡
Thanks to EVERYONE who made this possible! This American has visited London many times, and seeing the locations, the people, hearing the music makes me want to jump on a plane tonight! Many thanks!
'Feed the birds' is so epic when sung by so many people. Absolute Chills
If Julie Andrews waltzed in on stage right then, the applause would have probably crashed the loudspeakers.
+virusguy5611 hahahahaha when she is a guest on any show they have to start about an hour ahead of time because of the long standing ovations she always gets and that's no joke IT'S FACT....
Mwa Mwa why does she get such a long standing ovation if she hasnt sung in years
Because she's Julie Andrews. And for most of the people who grew up in the 60s and up, she was a part of their childhood, including my own. And she does still sing, just not to the high octave she used to.
"Because she's f'n Julie Andrews"
FTFY :-)
virusguy5611 How right
I have never seen such energy from all generations at a concert. You will never see anything like this in Canada or the USA! When it comes to being patriotic, music festivals, concerts and New Years Eve (London) The UK is it- hands down.
A Canadian
Are you joking?! You know as your southern neighbors that the USA is by far the most patriotic in any circumstance, so much that we get called arrogant.
To me, this shows how pointless everything else in life is compared to those priceless moments spent reveling in the profound mystery of music.
Thanks Kindle.. so nicely and well put... grab your family if you can or friends or prospect and laugh and cuddle and tap
Well said. Well said, indeed.
I've always known about the BBC Proms; what I never knew was how much of a national thing it was, or that they held events in sync throughout the realms where folks from every walk of life come out and join in the fun. That, to me, is simply amazing, and something I don't think could happen anywhere else in the world.
Peter C. Equality Frank - I live next to a castle in the middle of the UK.. The castle hosts the proms broadcast & the best part... it's free
I always thought it was in london
@@jacksongrainger9926 That's where the music is played but anyone that has can access the BBC can watch it.
It was always purely London based until a few years ago when various locations around the UK relayed the 2nd half of the last night. These other locations have their own mulit-genre live music for the 1st half of the last night while the London event has a purely classical 1st half.
Various cities have live broadcasts for ‘singalongs’ but proms are in 4 uk capitals. To go to the Royal Albert Hall for the last night of the proms you used to have to have attended 5? Other proms concerts. It’s a great night and all walks of life can attend together for a fairly cheap admission fee. Can’t wait for it to start again. Plus the UK is The Best place for live music in the world!!!!!!
Is just me or does anyone else get chills around 5.30 when the camera pans around the Royal Albert Hall with the choir in full voice
Yes it a homage to the camerawork at the same moment in the film
just you, sweetie
Mary Poppins has been a favorite since childhood. I'm just a "bloody colonist" from "across the pond", but only the Brits can pull off a tribute like this! Love it!
The Sherman Brothers, geniuses. American music on book written by an Aussie.... which was a love letter to Britain.
People from all walks of life united by a mutual love of music. Such a beautiful, human experience
Seriously, why couldn't I have been born in the UK? This seems so magical and amazing! Really hope someday I will be able to live there and be at the Proms!
You could come and visit, even get tickets for the Proms, or other [outside] concerts, and they are magnificent, but.. even in our summers [?] you have to expect the worst, anytime, from our awful weather. This is so NOT BBQ country.
Oh yes.. forgot.
To get in to England, you really do need to know the Mary Poppins score.. or at least, "fly a kite!"
I'll watch out for you coming.
WF x
It is not always like that ! 😊
It's magical there, where the days almost seems so dark (literally 😂✌️)
Did you ever manage to visit us here in good ole Blighty?!
jappy to send you a pne way ticket...
Especially now that we're facing a very unfortunate time and a difficult time. With so much uncertainty and that means upholding hope for all of us. Can't go wrong with Mary Poppins.
I am watching this with tears in my eyes. Mary Poppins is one of my favorite films and watching it as a child was truly one of the happiest moments for me. it is truly uplifting to see that so many people love it as much as I do. I can't wait to show the film to my little nieces when they are older.
I just realised that the reason I chose to live in England over my country is that I am listening to Julie Andrews songs since I was an infant. Plus my mother made me read most books of Charlotte Brontë, Lewis Carrol and Agatha Christie, so basically its like she conditioned me without her knowing. 😂 Seriously though, what a great culture and heritage!
dumb reasons
I mean, "Feed the Birds" was so beautiful. The composition was terrific.
Richard Sherman was an exceptional and decorated solder in WW2. He had a lifetime worth of experiences whilst he was still a young man. Then in his “second career” , along with his brother, becomes the multiple award -winning composer that we know.
Very very very good!!!
I live in Japan, and there isn’t the tradition like this (many people gather in the same place and sing together), so I want to visit this event!
To be fair to the gentleman at 0:01, she was wearing a lovely dress.
THis is the cutest thing in the world help
it's a singalong!!!!!!!!!!!
me too
*helps*
Wish I could have been there for this. Not only is the music amazing, but the audience looks like they're having so much fun.
everyone in the UK after lockdown needs to all come out and sing this together again 💛 amazing feeling of unity
'Mary Poppins' the epitome of my childhood and always brings a tear to my eye as I remember as a very small child my dear old mum taking me to see this......
They don't make movies like that anymore------wholesome , enjoyable and all the songs and actors and actresses were fantastic----unforgettable ! Saw that movie 3 times and learnt all the songs too !!!
Does anyone else feel at home when listening to this? Such beautiful music.
I remember watching the entire last nights at the proms live when it was originally, and you can bet that both me and my mum sang along! It was awesome! One of the best prom nights ever! Hey BBC, how about you make a proms with just Disney music? I won't be the only Brit who'll love that! These performances were amazing!
TheMidnightwolf15
Well the Disney company's hundredth birthday is in just a few years so you never know!
@@joshscomputer Best idea ever!
I'm just here to give it up for Ruthie Henshall. She may not be Julie Andrews, but she's been THE Fantine, and she IS Mary Poppins here. That quite suffices.
Prof. George Werner yes it does my friend , yes it does
Watching during the pandemic. We need this type of song to remind us that there will be a light at the end of this metaphorical tunnel too.
Mary Poppins was a huge part of my childhood. It will always be special to me!
at least
once in our lifetime
a movie will come along
that makes
such a impact on society
Mary Poppins
is one of those movies
you can tell
by the way
everyone in the audience
knew every word
of every song played
that’s a huge impact
Got chills when everyone sang feeds the birds, so beautiful to hear people sing together
They certainly don't write songs like this anymore! First class. Thank you for posting this classic piece of film.
The proms at their best!
The background to our childhood. Well done Ruthie but Best wishes to Dame Julie Andrews.
Love Mary Poppins
I think Walt would be proud to see this. Especially when singing one of his favorites, “Feed The Birds (Tuppence A Bag)”.
0:02 a great opening 😂😂
See this right here.. This makes me proud to be English 🌹💕
+Dan Djemal and then there's you who likes to make a simple comment and take it completely out of context and make me look like an ass.
I meant the atmosphere all over the UK when this takes place. Makes me proud. I'm actually very proud of my multi-cultural nation thank you :) please do not assume.
Just enjoy the moment....
@Rebecca is like this everytime during the BBC Proms?
☺
+Dan Djemal Well I am incredibly sorry I didn't use the correct term that would have been preferred for you. It was a completely innocent comment that you decided to make an fuss out of.
"Nice dress!"
-Some random Brit, 2014
I thought he said "Knightsbridge" !?!
I thougt he said "dos, tres", which means "two, three"
i thought he said nice vest
I thought he said “NICE BREAST”😄😬
I always LOVE it when the British public come together for something across the whole nation. this definitely is one of the things that unites the nation!
So great! The random bow sound and look (from a co violinist in view near the harp) at 1:47 bahahaha!
one would have to have a glass eye or a stone heart not to be moved by this musical treat....God Bless the UK!!
You're right. All praise be to Zeus.
@@kimjong-un1136 You mean to Crom.
@@Gambit771 Of course xD Ha-ha. The fantasy tales of the Hyborian Age will soon rise upon us. The chief God Conan, and his proto-Celtic Cimmerian people will rise upon us and tear down the walls of various religious mythological characters and delusions we've presented ourselves. Ha-ha. To bad julie Andrew wasn't there mary poppins always a classic to watch on TV or my cell phone to the actors and actresses who passed away my thoughts are with your family you may be gone but not forgotten still going strong after all these years feed the birds one of walt Disney favorite songs ever by the Sherman brothers great job great team work and great singing you should be amazed and proud love you guys thanks !!! Joe 😅😅😊😊
I would've loved to have been there singing along, feeling the collective voice of the crowd fill me up. It would have been one of the most joyful and moving experiences of my life.
Confession.......i used to hate feed the birds...but not because it made me cry back then....at that time i thought it was boring and dragged out the film unnecessarily.....as ive gotten older and based on my own experience i have met several "bird women".....now i understand it so much more and appreciate Disney not leaving it out of the film...he saw the significance of the idea of loneliness ......so did Pamela...in conclusion, now the song makes me cry!!!! Ever since saving mister banks, i have tried to go back to the disney classic at least once a year....i have seen and picked up on nuances in scenes i watched over and over again growing up.
Almost forgot to mention, i used to feel the same way about "So this is love" from Cinderella....used to dred that scene, i thought why this song???? Now......i want it played at my wedding someday.....and woukd love to get a chance to record it if my singing career takes off lol
I've literally watched this 5 times in a row now. Goosebumps the whole time.
I love British people
+Saada Al Ghurbah I love british people because of Julie Andrews hahahaha
+Sa3ooda S Join us some year, bring your flag and wave her proud :)
yeah--tastie on a spit
I prefere " i love all People around the World"
That's a LOT of people. Lol.
I LOVE that the entire UK is singing along with this.........
Sorry, sweetpea, but the entire UK isn't white and middle aged
It's simply supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
As long as this movie was, especially for children (me included when I was young), I've never seen my son, nieces, nephews or younger cousins get up from the television when this fantastic movie was playing. Exception, paused during bathroom breaks. With the wonderful acting and story line, this movie held them captive. But what really hypnotized them (and me) was the some of the greatest movie music ever written. These songs will probably live forever.
+cere tomer Dick van Dyke has spoken to this point: that no matter the generation, you can play this movie for children and they will sit down and watch it straight through.
+cere tomer Having the Sherman Brothers, Walt Disney HIMSELF, Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke all working together on a movie like this it just can't NOT be a classic that will live on FOREVER. That's why I think even if they try and make a sequel of this it will fail to impress as much as the original. MY OPINION: keep bettering the quality of the movie as years go by and keep introducing it to kids but otherwise LEAVE IT AS IT IS!!!!!!
I'm 30. This made me feel 5 years old again, watching the Mary Poppins VHS on my grandparent's TV.
I don't think anything but this or Peter Pan could do that.
Feed the birds :')
Made me cry so much, beautiful chorus.
A throwback to simpler, warmer times.
Lovely!!! Bless all the nations of the United Kingdom!!!! and bless Mary Poppins ...
I’ll jjj
Cry every time ! And I watch this video almost every day. Very atmospheric with the ship sailing away in the background, bet nobody on board will ever forget that moment ! My Mother was a school secretary, Ruthie Henshall was at the school and Mum said she was a lovely girl x
Oh boo hoo hoo!
Beautiful music, films, and literature belong to the human oeuvre. They are universal and transcendent. An Australian born author wrote a wonderful story, which inspired an American film maker to create a cherished movie, and people all over the world are richer for them.
Please leave your provincial attitudes at the door when you consume art.
NO. Universalism is just another form of imperialism.
The culture that created this art was Anglo. Anglo is not the world.
A spectacular journey through the songs of Mary Poppins that have deeply touched my heart.
All the participants are remarkable for paying tribute to a film that has touched the childhood of many
One day I want to visit a BBC Prom, I love watching them ♥
I’m watching this just a few days after this years last night of the proms and it makes me realise how truly special this is and how easily we take experiences like this for granted!
Wow, such warm fuzzy feelings of childhood... All those excellent classics - Fiddler on the Roof, Mary Poppins, Sound of Music, My Fairlady... just beautiful. Can't count how many times I watched this in the late 80's/90's growing up!
The BBC Proms schedule is released in the Spring. Then there are Proms throughout the Summer sometimes several per day. Some are free, some are hard to get tickets for. The biggest ones, usually at weekends p, are televised and there are link ups with Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.
Nowadays, Multiple venues are used and genres are covered to promote accessibility to a wider range of folks.
I started crying when the audience started singing!
After watching the Mary Poppins premiere, this feels so emotional! What a legacy!
I could listen to Ruthie's voice all day she got such a soft voice so lovely.
I wish I was there for this. I love this so much
Omg it’s amazing today I was working , I’m a delivery driver , and I was thinking In every job that must be done there is an element of fun ……. And snap the job is a game …… try it !!!!! It works !!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Tears in my eyes as I watch such a wonderfully crafted performance. Even after 45 years of working in the Film and TV industry I am still emotionally moved by these beautiful songs. I would thoroughly recommend watching the film “Saving Mr Banks”, it is a beautiful insight into how and why these songs and the storyline remain so popular.
I loved watching Last Night of the Proms but Mary Poppins Medley was amazing. Its my favourite film as I grew up watching it! :D
THANKS DISNEY AND MISS TRAVERS ( WELL, SHE DID IT, DIDN'T SHE ) SHERMAN BROTHERS AND JULIE ANDREWS, WITHOUT HER ENCHANTMENT AND RIGHT NOSE WE WON'T HAVE OUR HEARTS SOARING UP HIGHEST THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE...

Mary Poppins' songs is the kind of songs that make you feel charm and when everyone sang together something like brotherhood. I love it❤️. By the way I loved the man with an umbrella at 07:08 .
The crowd and the orchestra gave me goose bumps. 👍🏼👍🏼
Such a great collection of music but Feed the Birds has always been my favorite from Mary Poppins.
