what a sad and shocking story about Jennifer Lien. i always found her voice soothing on Voyager. i never understood why they couldn't keep her character in addition to Seven.
I disliked Kes as a very shallow 'mom' energy. She had little room for development. But I wonder if Kes and 7 coukd have taught each other some interesting things and evolved both
The show's ratings were dropping and Paramount was threatening to pull the show from production unless their ratings improved. Producers knew their ratings would climb again with the introduction of Jeri Ryan, but the show's budget meant that someone had to go. Although Garret Wang was originally slated to get the ax due to his constant tardiness to the set, in that same year, he was named one of America's Sexiest Men Alive (or whatever it's called), so producers realized a sudden departure of him from the show wouldn't go over well with fans due to his sudden popularity. It was decided that Jennifer Lien would instead be shown the door, as her character would only live a total of 8-9 yrs. Kes was already 4-5yrs old at that point (remember Janeway saying to Kes “you've lived most of your life here...” in “Scorpion Part II”), and writers were struggling to continue coming up with storylines for her.
What may be called for is a word other than "arrested" for George, there. Say "interned" for a vivid verb that conveys the case in a more upfront way. If the word "arrested" applies, I'd say it's by technicality.
@@craigcutler6919 Bullsh*t. Takei and the protesting charges, yeah, complete BS and yes, a stretch. You say "Most," but that implies more than half? More than half were domestic assaults/DUI or drugs. Not a bit of stretch. To be arrested, it just has to be a probability, not a certainty. Drunk and hit someone, drunk and crash, and/or domestic abuse. I bet you love that Ray Rice knocked a girl out in an elevator and thought it was a bit of a stretch.
Other have said this already, but adding George Takei to this list because was he imprisoned in a concentration camp is just gross. Being arrested for committing a crime and being illegally imprisoned by your government because of your race are not remotely the same. These people lost their homes, businesses, property and land, and for most it was never restored; families were separated, some never to see each other again. As anti-Asian sentiment is once again on the rise, it seems pretty tone-deaf to include this story here. The words we use are very important: “arrested” and “imprisoned” are not the same, and we need to do better.
Sounds like Jennifer/Tes has or had a possible mental health issue. I hope she's been able to get the help that she needs for it and is doing better in life. We will always love the character she played.

@@titusmccarthy While I think Americans treated pretty much all non-white, non-men like garbage before, during, and after ww2 and were in the wrong for internment camps, a lot of people completely gloss over all of the horrible war crimes that Japan committed during and before that period, (and there were A LOT OF WAR CRIMES) and forget that they were on the same side as Nazis. They were extremely discriminatory towards other asians, and even today on Japan there is an undercurrent of racism against black and non Japanese asians that nobody talks about.
Avery Brooks (Sisko DS9) is #4. Teri Farrell said Avery Brooks was too intense? Wow. One main reason I love him as Sisko is because, as Sisko HE IS INTENSE! I am really hoping to see Worf & Sisko in ST Picard.
Takei’s is the saddest one, mostly because of what was done to Japanese Americans, but also because he became such a devout follower of the political party that committed such evil on his people.

@M. D. Cooper At the time, stories about their Hollywood night life forays, as well as their lack of preparedness for work because of it were commonly circulating in the Star Trek fan communities and at cons. The first thing a newish actor does who signs on to a high profile show does is acquire a cocaine dealer. Then puts them on speed dial. The Eagles' Life in the Fast Lane is more of a documentary than a song.
George Takei also stars in the fantastic play 'Allegiance' which tells of the Japanese internment. My wife and I were fortunate to see it during it's workshop phase in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre. George and his partner Brad stayed around for over an hour afterward talking with the friends and family and fans from the audience - truly wonderful human beings.

Ah, come on. Most of these are guest stars with single episode or very few episode appearances. And Sulu in a Japanese internment camp? Such a horrendous stretch. 😔
Someone should tell him, though, that PETA is an awful, hypocritical organization that kills a vast majority of the animals it 'rescues,' even stealing pets off family porches and euthanizing them mere hours later, despite laws requiring them not to euthanize any rescue animals for at least three days. PETA is just evil, basically, and people who love animals should have nothing to do with them.

Watching _Voyager_ for the first time in lockdown and it's - shockingly - really good. It's a shame Jennifer Lien has had so much difficulty because she's a superior actress in the show & had the chops to become a mainstay of movies/network TV dramas well outside of _Star Trek._
I've honestly thought that Neelix would have been the better character to get rid of if they were trying to make room for Seven. By that time, he'd just become a plot device anyway. Kes had more growth if they'd have kept her. And I think that she and Seven would have worked well together.

First off, you didn’t really have much of a list to begin with, that’s why you used guest stars arrests. Also, George Takei does not belong on this list, he wasn’t a criminal and parts of what you said about Avery Brooks weren’t even true, he didn’t make Terry Ferrell ‘uncomfortable’, she said in multiple interviews, that he came on strong in his acting and she as a young actress didn’t really now how to play off that intensity, so she asked him to tone it down and he did! Yes, he’s a little weird, but who isn’t! Everything else isn’t anyone’s business! I also agree with a lot of the people in the comment section who said, that it is incredibly un-Star Trek like to make such a list in the first place!
I was enjoying TrekCulture for a while, but the usual WhatCulture laziness has crept in. Across all their channels, just TONS of factual errors. I stopped watching their other channels after a while, for that reason. Looks like I'll be leaving this one behind soon enough, for the same reason.
Why? So you can keep holding them up as gods, rather than as the fallible, imperfect human beings they are? Sorry to burst your nostalgia bubble..oh..wait..no, I'm not..
I've always enjoyed this channel, but this feels crass. I know finding new content is hard, but you have a standard. And it's been very good. And this... well it's not great. I've not even watched it. but Jennifer Lien is very troubled and using her as fodder for your next listicle. Just no.
That's the problem with channels focusing on one topic, they're going to run out of good material and then just scraping the bottom of the barrel and then rehashing old material as new again. The successful channels have more topics to cover so they can spread the material around without getting into a slow news cycle and produce substandard material like this.
Yes I heard it, wasn't sure what country this street was in, as poster said he was English actor aka British. So was this street in America, UK or other?
Technically they were right, she was in Prison Break the TV show. Why they showed her character from Point Break when they mentioned Prison Break, I don’t know 🤷🏻♂️
There was more to it than that too. When the police arrived after she flashed the neighbor's kids that were annoying her, she then completely took off her clothes stating that the police men aren't allowed to touch her if she doesn't have clothes on. So the police men had to wait a while until police women came who then forced a jumpsuit on her, and forcibly carried and put her in the police car.
Kes' actress has really gone downhill since _Star Trek Voyager_. If you read the news reports about her arrests (yep, plural), she seems to have lost her mind. It doesn't seem to all be drugs and/or alcohol related, I suspect she's got some untreated mental health issues as well. I know a lot of people hated her character, but it's really sad seeing what's happened to the actress.
Running out of material so soon? This was like a team up with TrekCulture and The National Inquirer. Sad, bottom feeding, easy way out, no effort, low brow crap.
Always examine an arrest with a grain of salt. As we can see here, its not always something bad. Remember, some of the greatest men (and women) in history were arrest and jailed for trying to improve the system: MLK Jr. Gandhi Susan B. Anthony Jesus and many others
An arrest is a lawful detainment either short term or long. Thats not what we did to japanese Americans in internment camps, that was illegal detainment and a human rights violation.

He was _never_ popular, as a character or an actor. Take a look at his imdb page for further details. I don't know how People Magazine goes about choosing who they're gonna put on lists like that, but it sure isn't based on public opinion _or_ any objective standard. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that Wang's reps paid somebody to arbitrarily put him somewhere on that list, just so they could continue collecting their percentage from his ongoing employment... and in the (ultimately vain) hopes that he might actually have more of a career after the show that they could continue to profit from.
I agree with you. I had heard that he was supposedly the sexiest man alive 🙄 and they kept him over Jennifer Lien for that reason. I’m a heterosexual man so I may not be qualified to say what is sexy in a man but I wouldn’t pick him for the top 100,000, let alone the top 100. I was really surprised when I heard that. I think maybe they just wanted Seven of Nine to be the sexiest woman and Kes was too hot or maybe it had something to do with her mental health problems or that they made her part of a race with a very short life span. I think that was a mistake. I liked her. I would have liked for her to stay on the show. They could have figured a way for her to have a longer life. I was sorry to learn that the Jennifer Lien had mental health problems.

I hope she got the help she needed.
what a sad and shocking story about Jennifer Lien. i always found her voice soothing on Voyager. i never understood why they couldn't keep her character in addition to Seven.
Yeah, she really did have a soothing voice.
Because she sucked lol
what are you people talking about? She is such a terrible character. Seven elevated the entire show by herself. They’re incomparable.

It's a bit of a stretch, but it does give them a nice opportunity to draw attention to what happened
@@Mephistolomaniac Most of these were a bit of a stretch...
Arrested means that you are taken into custody and you are prevented from leaving. So arrested applies.
The term should be "rounded up" and the destination was not an internment camp (he was not a national of an enemy nation) it was a concentration camp.
Great video as usual! One factoid error: Lori Petty was in the film POINT BREAK, not Prison Break. Love these lists!
I found it hilarious when you announced all of Alexander's crimes while showing him as a kid.

Him saying this doesn't make it factual.
