    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    Not all hunts end in a harvest, but they are still enjoyable. Being out in the woods with a rifle in your hand is about as good as it gets. A downed buck is just icing on the cake.

    I understand your frustration at sitting in a blind all day, Ron. I hunt in Michigan, and it's the same kind of landscape here. When nothing is moving, it can be very difficult to sit there doing nothing when you would rather be walking off the numbness in your lower half. I have come to find it very peaceful and relaxing to be out in the woods, as long as I am not half frozen, or battling a virus. There have been times that I have gotten out of my blind and stalked, but the trouble is the deer almost always see you before you see them. I can count the number of times I was able to sneak up on deer while stalking on one hand, and if you doubled that number it would STILL fit on only one hand. Many of us go home empty handed every year out here too, but that's hunting in the midwest. The joy of a successful hunt is really something special for us, and I have enjoyed many successes, so I am just grateful to be able to get away from it all, and enjoy nature, and celebrate the moments when our patience pays off.

    Unfortunately, nobody has been able to get a firearm in the 400 Legend. It's been out for a whole year, and Winchester never had their firearms sold to the public in that particular caliber. After firearm deer seasons in most states closed, Savage was the first company to promote rifles in 400 Legend. So nobody can really tell you how it performed unless you work in the hunting industry.

      Bad start for the 400 Legend, an answer in search of a question. Those 400 Legend Savage rifles will probably reach collector's status in 20 years. Doubtful the 400 Legend will survive. The gun industry does not seem to have a lot of faith in it either.

    Loved the content of this episode. Here in Michigan we have areas that require straight walled cartridges, which I hunt. I personally use the .450 Bushmaster and find it to be extremely accurate plus authoritative. I'm accustomed to the 12 gauge slug's recoil since I've been 14 years old and find the .450 to be on the mild side. The short yardage shooting range and small woodlots require a DRT result as may landowners will refuse tracking access PERIOD! Use enough gun Ron, it just may benefit. Just my two cents and 37 years of dreaming, strategizing and honing my passion for this wonderful creature. Best of luck!

    As a PA hunter pursuing deer I've hunted the small farmland woods in the southwest corner of the Commonwealth as well as the big woods of the north central tier. Both are different from each other and different techniques are needed. PA forbids baiting of any kind. But, there are limited restrictions on calibers such as minimum bore diameter and energy index.
    PA has millions of acres of public gamelands making hunting accessable for everyone willing to put in the physical effort to hike in and out of the public lands often times with a nice buck in tow. Motorized vehicles are also forbidden in the gamelands so a hunter has to be in good enough physical shape to deal with the hike and hopefully the drag. This is a total anthema to the Ohio hunts. In the PA big woods you would be able to still hunt quite easily and depending on how far in you hike you may never see another hunter. So, the big woods aren't like your western hunts but you can still travel far enough to easily get lost on the big ridge tops.

    Close to my neck of the woods, across the ‘big river’ in WV. Hunting here in the thickets of Appalachia requires one to be a very observant woodsman. You have to really do your scouting with a fine-toothed comb: looking for trail intersections, bedding areas, food source, direction of travel, etc. It gets even tougher when you get into the steep mountains of central and southern WV. You can rarely see past 100yds so you have to put yourself right on top of the deer to be successful.
    Youre right about it being ‘Daniel Boone country’. I can only image what it was like for him and other frontiersman exploring this vast, rugged wilderness for the first time.

      The 10 mm in a bolt action rifle might have sold better - the ammo is already available so no need to create another cartridge. There is no reason for the 400 Legend when the 350 is wildly popular in Ohio.

    • @blackie1of4
      @blackie1of4 7 месяцев назад +3

    I'm all for new cartridges but the straight wall rules feel more like a sales gimmick. In Mississippi we have almost a 4 month deer season. They added a few 2 week "primitive seasons" that required single shot straight wall cartridges in the mix. I bought a 444 Marlin which I love and many bought 45-70's. They even threw the 35 Whelen in there. Non of these cartridges are primitive but they do require you to buy another gun and scope and bullets.🤔

The brush is typically pine trees, and raspberry wipes to about hip height on a six foot tall man. The good part 308 and necked rifle cartridge are good here for hunting. Plot over baiting because of legally, you can't bait, but people do it. Water and green grass are big draws. Winter is cold negative tens are normally last for twenty plus days a year in the deep winter. The deer have large packs of fat all over and acts like armor at times 300 black out can fail with lighter loads.

      As far as the management of elk and “the common man”, that’s not a really great comparison either. I can hunt black bear, elk, and deer over the counter as a resident in many western states. The 350 Legend is by far the most dominant deer round in Ohio and nothing will change that. It does everything required, it is cheap, widely available and does not kick much - the straight wall version of the 30-30. Any new cartridge that comes along has to compete with the 350 Legend. That is why the 400 Legend will not catch on - there is no reason for it when deer hunting in straight wall states. It might have use as a moose/bear/elk round in Alaska and Canada but its short range compared to popular rounds like the 30-06 will discourage adoption there as well. So the 400 Legend looks like another round in a long list of obsolete cartridges.

      Many said that about the 350 L at 1st, and many other calibers. What little 400 L ammo I've seen on shelf, is pretty comparably priced to 350 L. So if they keep it available, and similar priced, and actually get some rifles out on the shelves, it may pick up in interest. Time will tell. I've not got a deer with a 350 L yet, but if the 400 L has a little more thump, when hunting smaller properties, that is a plus when you want the deer down on your side of the fence.

    I live in upstate NY and yes, it is a waiting game. In years past the 308, 7mm/08 and 243 have ruled the roost, for the last 10 years or so I've hunted with a 450 Bushmaster because a 150 yard shot is considered long and that 450 has planted everything I shot without taking it a step. I was not impressed with the 350L, I had in the past a T/C Contender in 357 Maximum and wasn't impressed with it at all. I wasn't going to take a chance on another limp along 35 and I had a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington anyway. I did enjoy handloading the 35L, some slow pistol powder and a hand cast and powder coated bullet and we were shooting for just over a nickel a round with my stash of primers bought at $30 per thousand. This 400L looks interesting, more power, more wack, lower recoil than the 450BM and still has the ability for the handloader of very cheap shooting and practice. IMHO a better option than a 30/30 or 350L. Should be very popular in those states with the straight wall restriction. I have an old 243 Axis sitting in my safe and it might just end up with a medium contour 16" barrel in 400L just to see what it will do, the grandkids will love it.

      Despite my whining in this video, I have had, over the years, good success still-hunting eastern woodlands. My "trick" is to just move very slowly AND GLASSING ahead. Often. I scour the woods with a 6X bino and often spot bedded deer inside 100 yards, sometimes as far as 200 yards. When the rut is on, bucks will walk by or even approach closely fro behind. A key is to find lots of sign (tracks, acorns, foraging sign, rubs, scrapes) so you're confident you're in a high-use area. Then you can slow down and search diligently. It sometimes takes me all morning to move perhaps 400 yards through woods like this. NOT my fav. style, but usually produces more deer than 4 hours in a stand. Would have worked on this hunt if I'd made that shot!

It is generally loaded with a 200-gr. flat nose bullet driven 1,000 to perhaps 1,100 fps to generate about 500 foot pounds kinetic energy. Not exactly a magnum! Handloaders claim they can get (safely) nearly 1,800 fps. It was first loaded in the M1873 Winchester lever-action as well as many single action revolvers of that era.

    Hey everyone, I got a quick question about how to check your barrel life and if hand loading different bullets will extend its life. I have a 3006 I inherited and 18 rounds that were hand loaded by my grandfather before he passed away which was before I was born and I try to avoid using it because I want it to last even beyond my children’s lives. So I watched a video talking about putting the bullet backwards down the barrel and seeing how much it “swallows” the round and if the bullet drops far enough that the casing is touching the tip of the barrel than it’s “shot out”. After hearing this which idek if it’s a accurate way to measure the barrels life I had to try it and with my grandfathers bullets it seems to have a pretty dang good amount of life left however I bought some 180 grain bullets from Remington and the bullet is almost completely swallowed and the brass casing is I’d guess about 1/8 of a inch away from the casing. If anyone can please tell me a 100% sure way to see the life left of the barrel or explain to me why there is such a huge difference between the two bullets which are both 3006 rounds I’d greatly appreciate because until I know that the barrel has a lot of life left I’m not going to touch or use it as I don’t want to wear out the barrel as i don’t even know if I could get another one because the gun is so old. I’m sorry if this is a dumb question and if I’m being paranoid, but this rifle is all that I have left to remember my grandfather and want to persevere it as long as possible.

    • @RonSpomerOutdoors
      @RonSpomerOutdoors  7 месяцев назад

      350, you are worrying needlessly. You are not going to wear out that barrel by shooting any bullet weight or type of hunting ammo. Barrels "wear out" from the heat of burning powder at the start of the rifling just in front of the chamber. Multiple shots in short order are what overheat and cracked the steel at the throat or leade. Farther down the barrel the rifling is just fine. You could easily shoot 5,000 rounds down that barrel without wearing it out. And if the barrel is allowed to cool between shots, you might get another 2,000. Backward bullets and swallowing tips and such fluff and stuff is a rough attempt to measure wear at the leade. Unnecessary. You'll know your barrel throat is excessively worn when your rifle no longer shoots consistently small groups. If it shoots one bullet/brand of ammo consistently into a 1.5-inch diameter circle and over time (hundreds to thousands of shots) those groups open to 2.5 inches, it's a sign the rifling at the leade is excessively cracked and worn. Get out there and hunt with your grandpa's rifle! That's what it was made for.

The .405 Win. case dimensions would be illegal in several of the straight wall case only states where the .400 Legend would be legal in all of the restricted case length states. As far as I know Ohio does not have this case restriction so a .405 should be legal there. The .400 Legend Winchester case has a rebated rim making it efficient for semi-auto rifles such as the CMMG. The rebated rim will work only in a bolt action and semi platform. Pressure indices are above 50,000 psi in the .400 Legend where max pressure in the .405 Win is around 44,000 psi.

      And still is. When first designed around 2007 it was titled the 45 Professional. When it became a commercial round in 2009 it was renamed the 450 Bushmaster. Based on the rebated 284 Winchester case with its significantly rebated rim. Chambered in many bolt actions, single shots, and AR15s. Shoots a 250-gr. .452" bullet about 2,200 fps. Makes a big hole in game without placing a big thump on the shooters shoulder. About 300 fps faster than the old, obsolete 401 Winchester Self-Loading round of 1910.

    The justification for the 400L is flimsy, it doesn’t provide any answers to questions. If they’re really responding to feedback from customers who want a bigger bullet, it’s a mistake; Winchester is essentially competing against themself. With the right bullet from big factories or boutiques, 350L is just about perfect for Midwest whitetail hunting. What Winchester should do is double-down on the 350L, develop some new copper and bonded bullets, and isolate the ridiculous 360 Buckhammer.

      It's an obvious play on words, a story (tale) about a whitetail hunt. So, a Whitetail Tale. Poetic license.

    Nothing new. It’s only about 100 fps faster than the old 401 Winchester. The 401 is more efficient. It has a shorter case and operates at a lower chamber pressure. Also, the 401 is a semi rimmed case and headspaces on the rim. Winchester should have just brought back the old 401. With modern powders and bullets, it’s a great 200 yard deer cartridge.

      If the round didn't stick around then it wouldn't sell now. Especially having to run proprietary mags and bolt faces. There's a reason they did what they did.

      @@fruitfarmfords8243 The 401 Winchester case is only 1.5 inches long and rim diameter is .457 which is smaller than the 450 Bushmaster. The 401 Winchester would work very well in an AR15.
