The Grünfeld is a very aggressive hypermodern defense, and it leads to extremely sharp and interesting games.
The Grünfeld Defense is a hypermodern opening. It does not challenge center in a “classical” manner. The idea is to allow white to develop classically, only to disrupt his central control with the pieces later on.
It’s a very aggressive defense in many respects, and it leads to extremely sharp and interesting games. That is mainly due to the imbalances which almost inevitably occur in the center and on the queenside.
Ernst Grünfeld introduced the opening in 1922. in his game against Alekhine. Apparently Alekhine resigned by throwing his king across the room. Later on, Alekhine employed the Grünfeld defense himself successfully.
As opposed to the KID, where black fights for the center later on and castles first, in the Grünfeld black strikes at the center right away, not giving white the option of a further expansion. After d5, white has numerous responses.
The two most common ones are the Exchange variation which occurs after ...d5 4. cxd5 Nxd5
5. e4 Nxc3 6. bxc3, and is one of the most challenging ways for white to continue (and the most common one), and the lines after 4. Nf3 Bg7.
The most significant feature of the Grünfeld is white’s broad center, best visible in the exchange variation. Black’s idea is to strike at it with his pieces later on, especially his “Grünfeld” bishop on g7. It is therefore true that results of Grünfeld games often depend on whether white has managed to keep his strong center intact or not. If white utilizes it he will win. If black breaks it open and activates his pieces (mainly on the long diagonal towards white’s queenside), he will win. There are exceptions, of course.
Jon Speelman: “If you are afraid of a passed d-pawn, you shouldn’t play the Grünfeld.” This sums up how a lot of games tend to go. White’s strong center often produces a passed d pawn. Black, on the other hand, will often be left with a potential passer on the queenside. This fact promises for very interesting endgames, often including pawn races.
This hypermodern defense has been employed by some of the greatest players of all time: Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Bobby Fischer, Alexey Shirov, Magnus Carlsen, Peter Svidler, Vishwanatan Anand, Maxime-Vachier Lagrave, Boris Gelfand and many more. Study their games if you want to understand it well.

Here's a great tool for learning openings: chessbook.com/hanging-pawns
Chessbook allows you to import and practice your repertoire. It focuses on moves people actually play as well as your mistakes. Connect it to your lichess or chess com accounts to correct the biggest gaps in your repertoire!
Gruenfeld is probably my favorite opening in chess. Its so razor sharp, double-edged and tactical. Had a couple of my favorite wins in the Gruenfeld as well as my most crushing defeats.
Chess in nature is quite refreshing
Am I right sir?🍺
You are very right:) it's way more productive than studying indoors in my opinion.
chess is a boring name
" Don't play the Grünfeld if you are afraid of the d pawn " - Kasparov
I remember it as: "if you are afraid of your opponent playing d7-d8Q, perhaps the Grünfeld isn't for you"
keedt What does d7-d8q mean? You mean Qd8? I don’t get it
@@Space-lb7be it means : move pawn from d7 to d8, and promote it to a queen
@@keedt d8=Q
And that's exactly why I'm not gonna play the grünfeld xd
hmm I was thinking about learning the grunfeld defence what a perfect coincidence :)
Haha nice.
@@HangingPawns I've been waiting for this series for a while. Glad they are on the way :)
Is there any particular variation of the Grünfeld that an Old Benoni player needs to study? I know you've said there's some crossover in the positions.
The expert is MVL now
True. I was stuck on Svidler. He used to be the biggest expert I guess.
@@HangingPawns He is still one of the biggest experts on the opening, but even Svidler plays another defences. MVL always try to play Grunfeld kind-of defences, which have made many players that face him play exotic openings to avoid getting into Grunfeld territory, or making him play kind-of KIDs, a less open game that suits him less with his playing style.
Mvl is pretty much expert on all most theoretical, sharp openings.
Najdorf, grunfeld, ruy lopez, Berlin
NEPO is also well prepared for grunfeld
I've only seen MVL lose in Grunfeld.
Found you recently and damn, you are doing god's work with your channel. Much appreciated!
I agree wholeheartedly, and would capitalize the G!
8:04 Sorry about that (reminds me of the other great content creator)
I only follow 2 chess channels on YT. Yours and Agadmator's
You guys make the World Happier Place :-)
ChessDojo and Andras Toth are pretty good too for chess education
You should check out some Eric Rosen!
3:08 Exchange Variation 4. Cxd5
10:53 Three Knights Variation 4. Nf3 Bg7
11:12 Russian
12:08 Petrosian
Yesss, I want to learn this opening would love to play the benoni, Grunfeld and KID
Jorge C. that would be extremely hard to learn and maintain
Yeah, I play the benoni, and It is so difficult alone I only know one line well, the Czech variation. Plus you really only need one opening, or one very active aggressive opening like the alekhine, and one passive opening like the pirc
I would recommend sticking to one of those to start with. Expand when you have mastered one. Grunfeld may be the best one overall (in my opinion).
Ti si najbolji. Hvala puno za sve snimke. Bez tebe bi bilo puno teže naučiti openings
I really love the videos in the nature, creates some good vibes combined with the chess :-)
Hehe thanks:) glad you find the surrounding suitable for chess.
Boris Avrukh's Grandmaster Repertoire on Grunfeld defence vol 1 & 2 is very helpful books...very complicated theories,, thanks for your video.. i'm waiting for your separate videos of all interesting theoretical lines 💟
I dont know his book. I will try to get it. I will most likely come back to playing the Grunfeld myself soon. Detailed videos coming up soon. Endgame and theory for the next month:)
👌🤘
thank you for this very few videos actually explain ideas instead of just throwing out variations
I cant wait for more :) I was looking for some "Siciliany", sharp, unbalanced option against d4. Very well done introduction and video, as always :)
Thanks!
Why not the kings indian? It's literally the sharpest opening to not be refuted.
@@chessdust8614 it’s getting close to refuted nowadays
@@evanhansen5064 not in the north Gloucestershire chess league 3 it isn't!
@@petenelson3511 yeah anybody at my rating shouldn’t call anything refuted to be honest
Nice intro! It's good to see that the D4 serie continues
Thank you:) Yeah, I've been playing a lot so I didn't have time to continue theory until now.
Really nice background music, very relaxing, I love how you patiently explain everything ;-)
Thank you! You are the reason that my chess is improving! Cheers!
Finally...the video I was hoping for, great great video, keep up the great work, cheers
Thank you for the video, i have been trying to study it
Glad to hear that. Hope it helps!
My favourite response to 1.d4
Happy to hear that. Hope you get to learn something new in the series.
I live in the country
Didn't notice the crickets until you mentioned them 8:00 mark 😀
very well explained
Great vid ! Which book/books could you recommend for someone who wants to start with the Gruenfeld? Keep up your great work. You are a true inspiration!
Really great content and presentation. Thank you.
Sweet video man, I am glad I stumbled across your channel. Good luck in your journey!
Thanks!
Ayyyyy, I was waiting on this series.
Sorry for the long wait:)
Hope you make a video about the queen’s gambit
Great video as always.
I enjoy your videos alot.
If you stay quiet and record the crickets, you can use the sound profile and remove the cricket noise (almost) in audacity.
Hey. OBS (for recording) has a function which reduces the noise. Nice video btw :)
Thanks!
Also love the work you have done on the Caro Kann, not sure if you have done the English open, but what do you think about it?
I will do the English after I have covered the d4 openings.
The Location Form the recording is a pure flex^^
Love the video could u also do analysis on your lichess games
I am doing that when I play them.
Thanks for the video👍
Thank you! I was expecting this
I trye play this defense, thank you very much.
Hey, great video! Just wondering, is there a schedule or order in which you are doing the openings? Like, what is after this and so on. I'm just asking as I feel woefully underprepared for a tournament I'm going to, and I play the benoni. Great video either way. Cheers!
There is a schedule for the d4 series, yes. I am recording the Nimzo after the grunfeld. Then the semi slav. Just stick to one for the tournament would be my advice.
@@HangingPawns okay, thanks, and I plan on sticking to one defense. My main one (only tbh) is the Czech Benoni, aka the closed benoni. Just wondering, where would that and the rest of the Benoni series relate into the sechdule? Cheers!
8:19... almost died when that bishop moved 8 squares and captured....... I was in full-screen mode......
I try to avoid classical openings as much as I can just to mess with my opponent 😋
Great video!
One question about your opening videos. Do you have some books for reference or is it mostly from opening book on lichess or other online resources?
I always use at least one book which I study from before I make a video. And then depending on how well I understand it I will look for more resources. I consult opening books too for detailed videos.
MVL is the person I consider the expert of the Gruenfeld
That's what i wanted to write too.
Thank you
No problem!
After d5 there is Bg5 very intresting line after 5. Bg7 Bxc6 6. Bxc6. I hope you will cover this stockholm variation
I will go over it, yes.
Stefan i really relish your Chess Sessions. Love Watching it. One request Can u make a video on opening in which white first plays G3 Covering all possible Variations in Depth ??For Example G3 D5 , G3 NF6 G3 C5 G3 E5 G3 G6 G3 B6 G3 H5. It will really help .Its by the way called the Hungarian Opening. Moreover I mean what can be its Transpositions ? Pls reply to this Stefan . Waiting really long
An other way of playing the Grünfeld Defence, the 3 knights variation ruclips.net/video/eAeT-1ixI8o/видео.html
do you think the Kings Gambit is a good opening? I love it but im not sure if it worth playing? like up to 2000?
Hmmm. As a main opening no. Because everyone is going to prepare against you. As a side weapon it's good at even higher ratings.
@@HangingPawns oke thanks for the reply, love the videos you make, thankyou :)
Would you recommend the grunfeld for a player who plays the sicilian?
Hmmm. That's a tough question. Yes because it's aggressive. No because they are really nothing alike.
How did you become so proficient in the English language? Is English a required course in Croatian schools and, if so, at what grade level does the training start and end?
Hmm. Yes, English is obligatory in Croatia. I think we had it in school since the 5th grade (11yo) until the end of high school. So for 8 years. But I knew it before school. I don't know why to be honest. Probably tv and books/magazines/video games. I remember watching films and reading in English as a child. That probably helped more than school.
@@HangingPawns Thanks for the detailed reply, which I wasn't expecting but enjoyed receiving. Keep up your good work on videos also! Wow so happy I am😁
Haha. Happy to hear that.
Excellent!
Are usually reach the Grünfeld Defense via the Queen’s gambit declined.
Are you going to make a video on all the anti-Gruenfeld systems? I struggle with some of those (particularly 3. f3)
I am going to cover the f3 anti grunfeld only in a separate video.
How do I purchase your Videos? Where is the link?
it must be roasting according to those crickets
I'm still pretty unsure about my opening vs 1.d4.
Is the Grünfeld something for beginners?
I watched several Introduction Videos now and from the structures and plans I like this one the most.
Advantage of Slav would be that I play Caro-Kann vs 1. e4 and you mentioned in the introduction Video of the Slav that similar structures can appear.
I don't like QGD positions with the locked in bishop
Generally, the grunfeld is considered bad for beginners and intermediates due to its complexity. However, in my opinion, you could learn the grunfeld if you learn something like the Catalan, because both openings will result in similar positions (against intermediate opponents)
what do you mean by saying a 'sharp opening'?
Aggressive, imbalanced, leading to wins or losses.
What is your suggestions for wite against grunfrld personaly?
Cvrčci i šah! Nema bolje! :)
Is the grunfeld a intermediate friendly opening (I am about 1000-1200 depending if it's rapid or blitz)? I mainly play the slav against d4 but I was considering on adding this to my repertoire due to the complexity/imbalances and nice ideas. Any advice?
Not perfect timing but if you invest the time, you will crush opponents 8/10 times but the amount of lines and moves out of theory that you'll need to study and get used to is tremendous which is why is isn't considered a great opening for beginner - intermediate players so you can choose but trying to learn it by just videos on RUclips will be mere impossible
nice response against d4 but can we have an intro of "the dutch defence"?
What's your FIDE rating please?
very nice intro
Will d4 Nf6 c4 g6 Nc3 d5 cd5 Nxd5 bd2 be covered?
I have seen the move 5.Bd2 in the exchange variation with the idea of capturing on c3 with the Bishop.
It can cause problems for black
Potato Gunner Ding Liren played this just the other day
Yes it is very good look at the game nakamura-karjakin
Oh where can I find the game
@@potatogunner3284 on YT GM akobian analyze it in his opening series and sorry it is nakamura - karjakin
Which other d4 openings will be covered in the series?
Based on the e4 series, I would guess that he's going to touch pretty much all of them (apart from nonsense like 1 d4 h5)
Next can you please do the Vienna game
Are you going to cover some anti grunfeld lines
🔥🔥🔥
:)
didn't like the crickets, but good video.
Stockholm variation is not covered.
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5 4. Bg5
Probably the most move-order sensitive opening there is. This makes the grunfeld a bad choice for a first opening. Learned that the hard and painful way.
Or a good choice since it forces you to know a lot.
Thank you!!!! I need something for white (Now I am playing stockholm 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Bg5 Ne4 and now 5.h4!? Or grunfeld gambit 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Bg7 4.Nc3 d5 5.h4!? Please cover those lines it will help all white players thank you)
Wait for the f3 anti grunfeld:) its a pain for grunfeld players.
@@HangingPawns yes i know 😉
Or make a video on Reti and English in depth.
8:02 Those are not crickets: crickets are nocturnal. Those are cicadas.
Wouldn't MVL be considered the top Grunfeld player rn?
Nardorf not grunfeld
Yeah he would. Svidler used to be the best. Sorry.
The main line will be covered in 20 videos😂
How good is the defence?
Crickets Gambit Accepted (y)
:D
La cigarra no deja escuchar!
These are Cicadas not crickets
Why this video is in my recommendation?
umm... because RUclips knows u will click on it? haha
Has anyone told u u look like Robert Lewandowski?
nature
No offense, but I don't think anyone under master level is qualified to teach this opening, and most masters aren't either
How to play grunfeld against London system 😭😭😅🗿
You don't. You can play KID instead
