I don’t even think 1,000,000 people died in the Sengoku Jidai. Meanwhile, in China’s warring states period, you have Bai Qi, alone, burying hundreds of thousands of enemy soldiers alive. This is not even counting plague, starvation, banditry, or battle deaths lol. China is also one of the earliest ancient civilizations though so it’s perhaps a bit unfair to compare.

Lyrics is based on an ancient Chinese poem “七步詩Seven Steps Verse” , which was composed by Cao Zhi曹植 , he's one of Cao Cao’s sons. There are two versions, the lyrics of this trailer are a mix of these two versions. 七步詩Seven Steps Verse 曹植Cao Zhi (192AD - 232AD) Version 1 煮豆持作羹,漉菽以為汁。 萁在釜下燃,豆在釜中泣。 本自同根生,相煎何太急? Translation: People burn the beanstalk to boil beans, filtering them to extract juice. The beanstalks were burnt under the cauldron, and the beans in the cauldron wailed: "We were originally grown from the same root; Why should we hound each other to death with such impatience?" Version 2(This is the most famous and wild-spread version, it’s recorded in the novel, Chinese children still learn this in elementary school.) 煮豆燃豆萁, 豆在釜中泣。 本是同根生, 相煎何太急? People burn the beanstalk to boil beans, The beans in the pot cry out. We are born of the selfsame root, Why should we hound each other to death with such impatience?" This poem originally is a metaphor that describes the ill-conceived notion of brothers or siblings hurting each other, but it also becomes a Chinese idiom to describe a person with outstanding eloquence.
Sidenote: it's called "Seven Steps Verse" because the romance tells that Cao Zhi composed this poem when his brother Cao Pi ordered Cao Zhi to create a poem from scratch within seven steps of walk, or not Cao Zhi will be executed.
The Disorder of the Eight Princes was a catastrophe for the Jin Dynasty and led to the several Xiongnu, Xianbei, Qiang, Proto-Mongol and Turkic clans to settle and form their own Dynasties in Northern China. The woman talking in trailer and who appears in the end has to be Empress Jia Nanfeng one of the most despicable women in Imperial China and the cause of the war. Not sure who is who in trailer but I presume the older looking prince is Sima Liang and the one in red is Sima Wei due to the fact as seen in 0:24 Wei comes with a sword to kill Liang and the minister in blue(who I presume is Wei Guan the Emperor’s Grand-Uncle). I love all the trailers that incorporate ancient poems. Putting those poems to song makes it even more beautiful. This one by a Cao of that era is fittingly haunting for the circumstances of brothers fighting each other. Also glad they included the villainous Lady Jia, wife of the developmentally slow Wei Emperor Hui here. At least that's who I am assuming that is. She was so instrumental in all this chaos.
This is the most terrible dogfight in china history. Sima family is the most capable officer in Wei, and they steal the throne. Nobody dare to serve Sima family with their full strength - they afraid the Sima family will eliminate them. Sima family claimed the throne by stepping moral and integrity. Sima family not dare to ask for moral and integrity from their officer. The empire was united, but it did not reborn. This new empire does not have a new spirit. Sima family further enhance the recommendation system which has been the root cause of the downfall of Han Empire in order to gain support of noble. Noble will born as noble. Peasant will born as peasant. Their world no longer cross. Government administration was take over by noble who not dare to serve their emperor. They drink wine and take drug everyday. They start the trend to debate about god, ghost, life - because they do not dare to talk about politic and reality. When a incapable man became the emperor, his brothers, are not satisfy with the outcome. The princes from Sima family, who eventually become Kings, had lost their bottom line in their dogfight for political strength. They kill and kill and kill. The kings try to be crueler than their brothers. They gathered more peasants to fight on battle field. When there are no peasant left, they lower the restriction on immigration policy and capture more barbarian from foreign land. They teach barbarian how to fight, how to rally troops on battlefield. They want to secure the victory in this dogfight. There are simply no room for coexistence between the Kings. When barbarian raise the flag of rebellion, the darkest age of Han people finally arrived - The Uprising of the Five Barbarians.

I'm a Chinese who loves history. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a well-known epic story in China. Almost everyone read it from childhood and many of us feel greatly relieved at the end of the book, seeing the country was re-unified and believing peasants would no longer need to live in chaos. The truth is, however, as represented by this DLC, soon chaos returned. After a very, very short period of peace under the governing of Western Jin Dynasty, there came the Wars of Eight Princes and then, "Uprising of the Five Barbarians", killing more than half of the people living in dat era. All peasants - no matter Han, Huns, or members other small tribes- all were thrown back into the chaos, suffering for another 300 years. It always reminds me the speech of Winston Churchill in 1942. “This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.” Thank god for allowing me to live in a peaceful time and play those video games.
A very long period, China was only united 280 years later under the Sui dynasty. However, the Sui dynasty quickly gone the way of Qin and Jin dynasties. China fell into chaos again until Tang dynasty again united it.

I love this trailer so much. Jia Nanfeng being the narrator of it sent chills down my spine. I can't wait for this. It's exciting to get something so surprising and different, and to experience a period that I've never seen any other game cover before. Many of the princes have non-Chinese units like Xiongnu, Xianbei or Qiang cavalry, and the scenario seems to be introducing many new mechanics. I really think this could be an amazing campaign.
The second half of the song is based on a poem written by Cao Cao's third son Cao Zhi in the Three Kingdoms, famous for comparing his brothers' fight over the succession to the throne, which is known as a seven-step poem, which allowed him to escape the death penalty.
I really can't stop rewatching this! It took me several times to finally notice that there's alliances and rivalries between the eight princes, and that the combat in the middle of the trailer actually reflects their behavior in the courtyard while they're waiting for the Empress. That amount of foreshadowing and choreography is simply incredible.

Yes, this is the one. Cao Zhi had to make a poem that convinces Cao Pi of his innocence within 7 steps. Cao Zhi did it in 6. Which is the 6 line version of the poem used as the lyrics for this beautiful yet tragic song.
I honestly can't wait to play this. I have to go brush up more on history because I barely remember the war of the 8 princes. I wonder what would come after this in the future? There is so much material that can be covered.
Trailer is great but the song is the true gem and if they dont relese the song of the trailer i think many will be sad and little mad too but can say for sure that i can't wait for it. The music department did fantastic job.
The part I love this trailer is how CA shows that they know the history of this peroid. Their facial expressions just show what they had done in the history, including betraying brothers, hating specific someone and fighting against another brother with an ally. And the final winner in the history is the one who barely participate in the fight, the one just sitting there and watch dogs biting each other. If you watch the trailer carefully you might find out whom I mean.
Sima Yue just sits there, like 'Why are all of my brothers either evil or straight up incompetent? And why is the emperor someone who thinks the frogs croak on the order of the emperor?! Why did I end up with these SIBLINGS?!?'🤦♂️
Seriously, the music for these trailers has been consistently top notch. If a soundtrack does get released in the near future, I’d love to see them get extended versions.

hafid lho it’s the seven steps poem, and it talks about using bean stalks to cook beans, as a metaphor for brothers mirroring each other. We hate each other for the sake of gaining benefits, and use various reasons to justify war. Humanity cannot escape the fate of this poem.
Just a fun fact: The reason why the eight princes could wage the civil war was the incompetent emperor on the throne. The power was usurped by his empress (the woman showed her back in the end of the trailer). That gave the excuses for other royal family members to fight for power. The record said once the emperor received the news of great famine broke out, and asked his officials :" why cant they eat stew meat instead?". Yup, just like what Marie Antoinette said. However that tale could be a rumor, just like the one of the French queen.
Story synopsis: The emperor founded a new dynasty after overthrowing the old one where he was a lord, but died soon after. The realm was ruled by his son who had mentality issues and his ambitious (yet not so smart) queen mother. A prestigious lord left his land for the capital to take over power from the queen mother. The other lords rebelled starting a civil war across the entire country, and he was soon killed. While lords allied with and betrayed one another scrambling for power, a self-proclaimed heir to the old dynasty rose to power with an army of nomadic barbarians and former slaves. CA has balls to make an ambitious move to connect the history of China and Rome, and as this DLC designed by Attila group it is consolidating my anticipation. In history, after the Chaos of Eight Princes, Liu Yuan, a Xiongnu warlord who defeated the command of the princes, make a riot against the dynasty and left China a 300-year chaotic period( 316-581C.E.). Legends and rumors before 20th century said that the Huns, especially Attila, came from Xiongnu after they've been forced to leave China in 4th century.
Looking at the causes of death for all eight princes will illustrate just how self-destructive their war was: Sima Ai: Burned Alive Sima Wei: Executed Sima Liang: Executed Sima Yong: Assassinated in an ambush Sima Lun: Forced Suicide Sima Ying: Forced Suicide Sima Jiong: Executed Sima Yue (ostensibly the winner): Died of stress Thanks to these eight, the decades of work that so many great men did to unify China was undone in only 15 years.

So a little story behind the song; I am so hyped when I heard they used a poem that we learnt in elementary school in China into the background music. This song is written by Cao Zhi, second son of Cao Cao; the context was when Cao Cao's first son: Cao Pi became the first emperor of Wei and trying to get rid of Cao Zhi, who Pi thought was a major threat. Zhi was known for being an excellent poet, so Pi forced him to make a poem within seven steps or he will be beheaded. The following is the English Translation of the Poem: "Beanstalks were put to boil the beans (煮豆燃豆萁), inside the pot the beans screamed. (豆在釜中泣)。 'the same root we all came from,'(本是同根生), 'why the swift burning you forced upon?' "(相煎何太急) This song is later known as "Seven-step Poem", not only due to how quickly Zhi made it but also the fact that Pi pardoned him afterward with tears in his eyes. What is interesting that they used the poem here was Jin(晋), founded by Sima Zhao, technically usurped the crown from Wei, the very royal family who Zhi was from; and during the war for the eight princes, the ruthless methods that each member of the Sima family used against each other for the throne almost paints the same picture as the feud between Cao Pi and Cao Zhi. Nevertheless, what is ironic is that none of the Sima family regretted or pardoned their blood relatives like Pi did but instead caused a massive turmoil in the north; and that would later lead to one of the biggest invasion from numerous nomadic tribes in the North, resulting years of turmoil.
Cao Cao valued talent over all else so considering the Cao rulers after Cao Rui were weak I don’t think he would’ve been upset at the coup against Cao Shuang. Hell, he might have even approved of it.
"There is 20 liters of talent in this world, Cao Zhi alone has 16 liters, I have 2 liters, others share the last 2 liters" -- Xie Lingyun(385-443AD) landscape poet. FYI Cao Zhi wrote the lyrics.
The song is based on a poem that Cao Zhi composed to his brother Cao Pi, after he had inherited the title "Prince of Wei" & took control of the dynasty!
What happened at the end of three kingdom? 1. A minister(Sima Yan) do withthrown the old Dynasty(Wei), and ending the civil war. But he dies early, leaves a heir with mental problem(Sima Zhong) and a ambitious queen with poor ability(Jia Nanfeng). 2. A Lord with great reputation (Sima Liang) leaves his fief and arrived the capital for the position of "the hand of the king" , but murdered by the Queen shortly. 3. Seven other lords gave assembled their armies, fighting each others and constantly betraying their allies. 4. Meanwhile, a guy (Liu Yuan) claims he is the successor of the old Dynasty (Han), and got a army with Nomadic tribe.. 5. Many escaped slaves joins his army, and a slave leader (Shi Le) becomes Liu Yuan's important commander... Seems familiar??

The ultimate winner of the Eight Prince War Sima Yue,Less than five years after he won, he died of depression on his way back to the territory(He believes that the imperial capital is no longer safe.). This is actually no big deal, because after his death, the pursuers throwt all his wives into the crowd and g a n g r a p e. Then, the surviving women are sold as slaves. The other 36 Prince and their families who left the capital with Sima Yue and went to his territory were all massacred on the spot. The darkest point of this is that it is not the Han people who defeat them, but the barbarians who have been suppressed by the Han people for the past two thousand years. This is the first time in Chinese history that civilized people have been defeated by barbarians.
In fact, 80% of Han Chinese(the majority of Chinese) died during this period, after that, north nomadic tribes invaded Jin dynasty and built their regime, China broke again.

Lyrics is based on an ancient Chinese poem “七步詩Seven Steps Verse” , which was composed by Cao Zhi曹植 , he's one of Cao Cao’s sons. There are two versions, the lyrics of this trailer are a mix of these two versions.
七步詩Seven Steps Verse
曹植Cao Zhi (192AD - 232AD)
Version 1
煮豆持作羹,漉菽以為汁。
萁在釜下燃,豆在釜中泣。
本自同根生,相煎何太急?
Translation:
People burn the beanstalk to boil beans,
filtering them to extract juice.
The beanstalks were burnt under the cauldron,
and the beans in the cauldron wailed:
"We were originally grown from the same root;
Why should we hound each other to death with such impatience?"
Version 2(This is the most famous and wild-spread version, it’s recorded in the novel, Chinese children still learn this in elementary school.)
煮豆燃豆萁,
豆在釜中泣。
本是同根生,
相煎何太急?
People burn the beanstalk to boil beans,
The beans in the pot cry out.
We are born of the selfsame root,
Why should we hound each other to death with such impatience?"
This poem originally is a metaphor that describes the ill-conceived notion of brothers or siblings hurting each other, but it also becomes a Chinese idiom to describe a person with outstanding eloquence.
Your last paragraph... It clearly shows that you have godlike english language wriiten skills.
Sidenote: it's called "Seven Steps Verse" because the romance tells that Cao Zhi composed this poem when his brother Cao Pi ordered Cao Zhi to create a poem from scratch within seven steps of walk, or not Cao Zhi will be executed.
Nicely done.

“This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.”
Thank god for allowing me to live in a peaceful time and play those video games.
Not for long.
A very long period, China was only united 280 years later under the Sui dynasty. However, the Sui dynasty quickly gone the way of Qin and Jin dynasties. China fell into chaos again until Tang dynasty again united it.

Story synopsis:
The emperor founded a new dynasty after overthrowing the old one where he was a lord, but died soon after.

I love being able to tell all their classes just by looking at them.
I guess the angy trebuchet guy is a vanguard. The leopard skirt guy is a sentinel, the guy who's about to get rekt by the trebuchet is a champion, the old dude is also a champion, that red dude who's about to kill the old one is also a vanguard, the dude next to leopard guy is a strategist and the final one in the end walking is also a strategist
Ohh and the dude leaning against the pillar is maybe a commander?
CA has balls to make an ambitious move to connect the history of China and Rome, and as this DLC designed by Attila group it is consolidating my anticipation. In history, after the Chaos of Eight Princes, Liu Yuan, a Xiongnu warlord who defeated the command of the princes, make a riot against the dynasty and left China a 300-year chaotic period( 316-581C.E.). Legends and rumors before 20th century said that the Huns, especially Attila, came from Xiongnu after they've been forced to leave China in 4th century.
Looking at the causes of death for all eight princes will illustrate just how self-destructive their war was:
Sima Ai: Burned Alive
Sima Wei: Executed
Sima Liang: Executed
Sima Yong: Assassinated in an ambush
Sima Lun: Forced Suicide
Sima Ying: Forced Suicide
Sima Jiong: Executed
Sima Yue (ostensibly the winner): Died of stress
Thanks to these eight, the decades of work that so many great men did to unify China was undone in only 15 years.
Somewhere on the heavens, Sima Yi rolled in disappointment by this and Cao Cao rolled even faster.
@@ihzamahendra926 Jin got rid of all the policies that made Wei and reinstated many of the policies from the Han back so I’m not sure if Cao Cao would roll.
Neat steam page says Sima Yong has 2 Xianbei cavalry units, Sima ying has 3 qiang cavalry units and sima lun has 2 xiongnu cavalry units.
I don't know what the hell this is gonna be like, but the song sold me on it.
Gean C judging from history? A nightmarish dogfight where a mentally disabled emperor sits on the throne while barbarians knock at the gates. These princes don’t care, however, and stoop to new lows in trying to murder each other.
It’s great.
the imbecile one actualy sima lun the son of sima yi himself
Think Game of Thrones but within a single family. Eight Princes and the Empress Regent duking it out whilst hiring foreign barbarians to fight (think Western Rome). The Dynasty predictably goes down in flames.
@@cursedkei66 literally nothing like game of thrones

i'm still waiting the Liu Bei's trailer soundtrack
Great trailer no doubt, I'm glad that CA has bring us a less well-know history period of China instead of those that are used over and over again.
Just 1 question, how is CA going to deal with the names? I mean... They are all Sima you see...
use their titles. like prince of Changsha or prince of hejian
Probably just name them all Sima and make them legendary characters with their titles serving as their description (ie Sun Jian the Tiger of Jiandong)
You could call them Jiong, Liang, Yue, Yong, Ai(Yi), Ying, Wei, and Lun I guess.
Whoever composed the background music, wow! Got chills all over me
Agreed. The song is so compelling
doesn't sound chinese though.
definitely Chinese. The lyric is the quatrain of Seven Steps, a famous Chinese poem
@@Wvk5zc Then you haven't heard enough Chinese
so much about this trailer is beautiful. The music has always been top notch for three kingdoms but this is just something else, the cinematography has gotten breathtaking and just... Total war trailers have been getting better for a while, and if this isn't the peak then I can't wait to see what's next.
1:32 "I can fight that..." Instantly bought it, thank you.
We get Prequel Eras like Warring States n Maybe Sequel as far as Mongol Invasion
The Mongols appeared in the 12th century. The Huns and Xianbei may have blood relations with the Mongols, but they are culturally different.
Please CA make new “Uprising of the five Barbarians” dlc.
The following is the English Translation of the Poem:
"Beanstalks were put to boil the beans (煮豆燃豆萁),
inside the pot the beans screamed. (豆在釜中泣)。
'the same root we all came from,'(本是同根生),
'why the swift burning you forced upon?' "(相煎何太急)
This song is later known as "Seven-step Poem", not only due to how quickly Zhi made it but also the fact that Pi pardoned him afterward with tears in his eyes.
This is (or at least will be) the best Total War game EVER!
Will definitely make videoes on this when it releases!
Cao Cao must be laughing on the afterlife when he saw this massacre about Jin and the eight princes.
Cao Cao valued talent over all else so considering the Cao rulers after Cao Rui were weak I don’t think he would’ve been upset at the coup against Cao Shuang. Hell, he might have even approved of it.
This is marketing done right. Give your trailer/marketing team a raise!
Sima Yi is both spinning in his grave and screeching from the heavens at the same time.
"There is 20 liters of talent in this world, Cao Zhi alone has 16
liters, I have 2 liters, others share the last 2 liters" -- Xie
Lingyun(385-443AD) landscape poet.

韦索南 yep, but jia nanfeng is nowhere near cersei in term of beauty, in fact if she a commoner, she may be never got a husband
I just checked the "War of Eight Prince" in Wikipedia, and it's far more messed up than Three Kingdom period, for example there's a general named Zhang Fang who capture 10.000 slave women and then sliced them into mince meat only to feed his soldier
This trailer is beautiful. I have no words to describe how magnificent it is. And the period seems to be interesting too.
In fact, 80% of Han Chinese(the majority of Chinese) died during this period, after that, north nomadic tribes invaded Jin dynasty and built their regime, China broke again.

I hope Liu Yuan will be part of this. It’s time for Xiongnu to restore the honor of Han.
Liu Yuan ended Western Jin, while Liu Yu ended Eastern Jin. Vindication for the Han. lol
