      Chinese here. I think it is mainly because it has to accommodate the taste of mainstream audiences in China where the TV series market is saturated with over-the-top melodramas. By comparison this series is already doing a great job dialing down all those crap - at least there are not many scenes of dramatic slow motion with whole songs suddenly pop in or scenes of generals take off from horsebacks and fight each other mid air for 2 minutes.

    • @exiagan9721
      @exiagan9721 6 лет назад +98

      Pardon my translation but the book was called the Soup and Buns collection or in Chinese 湯餅賦.
      Here, the writer at around 260 AD was travelling for 30 years writing this book on the agriculture, culture and foodstuff for the western Jin Dynasty (after Three Kingdoms). Historically in Qin and Han, there was already a dried sort of pancake/biscuit hybrid that was used as food supplies for Army. Noodles on the other hand has been in existence since Zhou dynasty with the invention of wheat powder but it was not until the Song do we see the type of noodles we see today in China.
      Bread was never invented by the chinese due to yeast and its process was not used in making bread but was used in making pickled foodstuffs for winter or more commonly wine and liquor. Wine on the other hand is quite advanced for the period from the Han to the Tang dynasty compared to the rest of the world. The Chinese was capable at around 80BC? (not sure since it was in the middle of the transition from Western Han to Eastern Han) did we see some form of brandy called Du Kang wine by fermenting fruits and other wheat stuff into alcohol. This technology was more advanced than the wine processing used by the Romans for grape wine since Du Kang was said to be clear alcohol with a fruity taste.

      Steam Bun was invented by Zhuge Liang when he had contact with outsiders, mainly barbarians. Barbarians had a ceremony of scarifice, in that they cut off men's head as paying respect to entities. Zhuge Liang saw it and thought it was too cruel, so he invented steam bun, flour with meat inside of it, to replace human heads. It was originally called “蛮头”, which means 'barbarian heads'. Later, it became “馒头”, 'steam buns'. In southern part of China, people call it “馒头” still. But, in northern parts of China, people also call it “包子”。

    50,000 troops is the amount that Alexander the Great could muster for his entire Persian campaign. 50,000 troops is the amount of troops Caesar had at his disposal throughout his campaign in Gaul and with the Roman Civil War.
    50,000 troops to China is not the biggest amount, but to lose them all at one go, is a staggering defeat. It is like anyone receiving news that their house is burnt down and their bank account was hacked and had more than half of it stolen. Anyone would faint in great despair.

      In reality it's said by ChenCheng, the chief of staff in the nationalist army, when WangYaowu(In reality, ex-commander of 74th army/division, because there was a reform) working in LiXianzhou legion (massive group mixed of multiple armies and devisions controlled by LiXianzhou) attacking communist army, the legion lost 56000 in 3 days of battle, the chief of staff said 60000 pigs would took their enemies more than 3 days to catch.

    Its not in this series but in a since-deleted prequel the interesting leap-frogging that Yuan Shao did at Yuan Shu s expense was basically this:
    Years earlier, Yuan Shao and Cao Cao
    conspired to stupefy Yuan Shu with drink. This they did. Then they had some lackeys go hijack a wedding party and steal a bride. The last stage was to deliver said stolen bride in closest proximity with a thoroughly inebriated Yuan Shu. The ruse worked wondrously and Yuan Shu fell from favour. Its incidental to the structure of Luoyangs military-back in episode 2 when Cao Cao was talking about the plan to bring in Dong Zhou being Yuan Shaos idea, not his. You see, they were the basically the right and left arm of local military might within the capital. Cao Cao says, " no, thats like inviting a tiger to a wolfs den ". They followed this plan.
    ( because the eunuchs, collectively, realistically wolves ) He Jin was assassinated.
    Maybe thry both wanted it to happen, who knows. They each certainly consolidated power in the afterglow of the citys flames, the inevitable deposing of the heir-apparent-then the installation of Liu Xian...im not sure, really...what to believe. Its a fun story.
