Man I loved my Sonics back in the day. DJ, Gus, Lonnie...those were the days. We gotta get the Sonics back in the league!! BTW...that classic NBA theme song in the background was epic!!

As a Blazer fan I have to agree. The NW needs the Sonics back. I miss the rivalry and Seattle deserves their Sonics back.

Great stuff, and Moroder's "Chase" playing makes it even better. The Lakers and the Sonics had some good battles during those days. Seattle with a terrific squad in 1979 winning it all, one of the best defensive teams ever. And DJ was just so extremely clutch (at least, after the 1978 Finals).

The year before Magic. With the exception of game 1, this series was hard fought. 2 overtime games and nearly a 3rd. I was 11 yrs old. I saw game 3 tape delay on CBS 10:30pm and it was a overtime game that lasted a long time. A perfect example of how Magic Johnson made the difference the next year. The Lakers were good in 79, but not good enough to beat the Sonics.

The Los Angeles Lakers drafted Magic Johnson Number 1 Overall later in the Draft.

Plus, they had two small forwards in Dantely and Wilkes. They needed another rebounder, it was silly to be Spencer Haywood, but he flamed out. Jim Chones came in and did a solid job

Crazy that Rudy Gobert was worth 5 1st round draft picks in addition to players and Kareem wasn't worth any 1st round picks.

Thanks for putting this up! I always thought that Dennis Johnson's buzzer beater to send Game 2 to overtime was one of the greatest clutch plays in NBA playoff history. But sadly, the late 70's was a down time for the NBA and much of the immediate pre-Magic and Bird era is forgotten or overlooked - other than the Erving-Walton battle in the 1977 Finals maybe. But they did have great basketball teams and players and exciting games too throughout those years.

DJ was clutch on both ends like few others.

Sure did. Not acknowledging that is an insult to DJ, Cowens, Barry, McAdoo, Davis, Westphal among others.

Kareem is the greatest player I ever saw.... the Sonics never should’ve traded DJ as westphal was broken down...we still had a great team but magic showed up and that was the end of a potential dynasty!

Did you know? When the Los Angeles Lakers had the Number 1 Overall Pick in The 1979 NBA Draft, the Lakers Brass preferred to draft Sidney Moncrief. Even though Lakers GM Jerry West wanted Moncrief, Cooke vetoed West and got Magic Johnson because:
      A) Magic’s star power would pack The Forum.
      B) It would make The Sale of the Lakers, Kings, and the Fabulous Forum more feasible to sell to New Owner Dr. Jerry Buss before the 1979-80 NBA Season.

Announcer says Lakers are in blue on the road (really purple), then says Lakers are in white at home (really yellow/gold). Saying blue on the road I might be able to understand, but how in the world do you see the Lakers as wearing white at home!?

  • @mikem591
    @mikem591 5 лет назад +2

Amazing what the addition and subtraction of a key player can do. You add Magic and subtract DJ and this series isn’t even close. However, with Dj and no Magic the Sonics were a little better and heading for a championship.

Look how stagnant the Lakers are around the lane in both offense and defense. No wonder why Coach Jack McKinney in Winning Time had those Lakers running during practice.
After seeing this, I don’t blame McKinney one bit for what he was doing to the Lakers during preseason practices. THAT WAS THE BIRTH OF LAKERS SHOWTIME!

While he was a very good player, if Wilkes is a HOFer, then how are Nixon and Gus Williams not? I feel Norm is the most deserving of the 3. My opinion.

    • @gl6996

on the eve of April 29,1979...i was living on 85th and Hoover street, and i had sponsored the NBA finals...from the Bank and Banking System...as the Lord Christ YHWH ELOHIM...the reason Adul jabbar, was sent out of the game, and the rooki magic earving johnson, replaced him at the center position, and the Lakers won the finals...then the jewish men argued that their "signatures" projected that the supersonics "had to win" the game...according to their scripted paperwork...then after one jewish man cursed everybodies creator by calling my name Christ YHWH ELOHIM...then everybody thagt was not created by my creator laid dead...all night long...for the day of the Lord Jealous...to teach the world to stop accusing me of killing dr. martin luther ...jr....my name is KING YHWH Lord AELOHIM...in the original hibroo language...from the earth...but all that happened on Venus in heaven...great Good news
