    Correction: Dennis Johnson - not Gus Williams - went 0-for-14 from the field in Game 7 of the 1978 NBA Finals. (Williams had a rough game, too, though, going 4-for-12 in the loss.) 😬

      DJ owned it too and felt he'd let the team and himself down in that game and vowed to never let it happen again. He credits that game and the determination that stemmed from it for becoming one of the greatest clutch players in NBA playoff history.

And Lenny was so cool and collected, I just loved the entire team. My uncle played with Sikma at St. Anne in highschool. Lonnie Sheldon was one of the best power forward enforcers in the league. Downtown Freddie Brown was like electric coming off the bench. And Gus at the two spot had so much shit going to the bucket it was amazing. Dennis Johnson, after some years was traded to the suns,and then to Boston. In Boston he Joined Bird ,and Parish ,and Mchale. Johnson had great passing ability to other players mostly finding Bird...
    Great defense ability he guarded Magic when they played the Lakers. He Was part of that great Boston team in the 80s.
    When I saw him play ,years later,.in retro NBA, games,.Gurding Magic Jhonson, Moving so fast, Scoring with great movements, (he was an Athlete)I asked my self, Who is this great player?Why is every one talking about Magic Jhonson, while there was another Jhonson who was in my opinion in the same level Magic was. Dennis could Dribble, protect the ball,.make great Passes like Magic . His defense was great as well.

      With Dennis Johnson was with Seattle I think he was at his best. He was Finals MVP for Seattle. He was the point guard with Boston but the shooting guard in Seattle & he could score. He still had his athleticism with Seattle and one game he had blocked 8 shots!! A 6'4" guard with 8 blocked shots in a game. Seattle had the best version of him but he was still excellent with Boston. The Celtics got him to run the point and play defense on Andrew Toney and Magic Johnson

With Downtown Freddie Brown in reserve, that was one of the finest back courts of the era. In addition, how about coach Wilkens changing almost the entire 77-78 starting line-up with Fred Brown, Slick Watts, Leonard Gray and Paul Silas going to the bench and The Wizard, Dennis, JJ and Sikma installed around The Human Eraser? Incredible transformation. Wilkens was robbed of Coach of the Year that season to Hubie Brown in Atlanta 🙂 Also: No mention of Lonnie Shelton (RIP), starting power forward for the championship team when Webster went free agent (Lonnie was compensation in the deal with the Knicks).

Sonics made 3 total appearances, lost the first/won the second/lost the third to arguably the GOAT coach/GOAT player (Phil Jackson and Micheal Jordan…who’s last names started with same letter) Seahawks also 1 for 3, winning only the second appearance and losing the last appearance to a team with arguably the GOAT coach and player ( Belichek and Brady…who’s last names started with the same letter)

    That '79 team is pretty interesting. I can't imagine a championship team these days with zero all-stars!. We can reference that pistons team that won a title without a "true superstar", but they had players who got all-star selections. Other than them I can't think of any team even a little comparable.

    • @tommurphy2746
      @tommurphy2746 2 года назад +2

      Actually, Jack Sikma and Dennis Johnson were all-stars in 1979, and Gus Williams who averaged 29 pts per game in the 1979 Finals would be an all-star in the following years and was 1st team All-NBA in 1982 alongside Magic Johnson. Also, "Downtown" Freddy Brown was an all-star in 1975-76. John Johnson had been a 2 time all-star with the Cleveland Cavaliers before he arrived in Seattle. In addition, Paul Silas made the all-star team when he was with the Phoenix Suns. Lonnie Shelton, the Sonics power forward also made the all-star team in 1982. In fact, in the 1982 all-star game, that 1979 Sonics Championship team had 4 players playing on the floor at the same time with Kareem-Abdul Jabbar at Center for the Western Conference....Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, Lonnie Shelton & Jack Sikma. The 1982 all-star game is on RUclips. Check it out...I think it was during the 2nd quarter when those 4 players that played on the 1979 Sonics team were on the court at the same time with Kareem for the Western Conference All-stars. At that time Dennis Johnson played for the Phoenix Suns. Also, Gus Williams led all scorers in the 1982 all-star game with 22 pts 9 assists and 2 steals. That 1979 Sonics Championship team actually had 7 players on it that had made at least one all-star team during their career. In addition Jack Sikma and Dennis Johnson have both been inducted into the Hall-of-Fame and the best player in my opinion on that team, Gus Williams will someday probably be inducted as well. That Sonics team was a great passing team and was well balanced offensively. "Downtown" Freddy Brown actually scored 58 pts in a game against the Golden state Warriors in 1973...and that was without a 3-point line.
