Prior to that time - from the birth of the church until about 300 or 400 AD, and in Judaism before that - the church was premillenial. The amillenialism was due to two things: the fact that Christianity became the state religion of Rome, and anti-Semitism. When the Reformation happened, the reformers reformed everything except eschatology, partly because they were virulently anti-Semitic (ESPECIALLY Luther). They simply couldn't stand the idea of a Jewish King ruling the world from a Jewish King's throne in the Jewish city of Jerusalem. So, the Reformation kept the Roman church's amillenialism - although there were always those who were premillenial - and premillenialism didn't see a strong resurgence until the mid-18th century. It's still not the dominant position of the denominational churches, though it's more widely accepted today than ever before. But, as a general rule, a good way to get yourself viciously and brutally mocked and scorned in Christian circles is to say that you are premillenial. It's almost shocking to some people that you would ACTUALLY take the Bible LITERALLY. And there's still an undercurrent of anti-Semitism in a lot of amillenial circles. Yeah. That's another religion that teaches that humans have to pull themselves up by their own "bootstraps" in order to be humans. All other religions do that, except for orthodox Christianity. There's only one Man who ever was fully human. He freely confers/imputes (substitutionary atonement) true humanity on His people, then subsequently infuses Himself into them so that they can incrementally grow to be more human in this life (grow in grace/sanctification). No man can "make" himself righteous in any way, nor can he by any measure satisfy God's perfect law. Man has to have a Mediator, and the Mediator must be a Man - The Man. I think it comes down to the fact that, for around 1100 years - once the Alexandrian school won out over the Antioch school, and Origen and Augustine came on the scene - the church was amillenial. Prior to that time - from the birth of the church until about 300 or 400 AD, and in Judaism before that - the church was premillenial. The amillenialism was due to two things: the fact that Christianity became the state religion of Rome, and anti-Semitism. When the Reformation happened, the reformers reformed everything except eschatology, partly because they were virulently anti-Semitic (ESPECIALLY Luther). They simply couldn't stand the idea of a Jewish King ruling the world from a Jewish King's throne in the Jewish city of Jerusalem. So, the Reformation kept the Roman church's amillenialism - although there were always those who were premillenial - and premillenialism didn't see a strong resurgence until the mid-18th century. It's still not the dominant position of the denominational churches, though it's more widely accepted today than ever before. But, as a general rule, a good way to get yourself viciously and brutally mocked and scorned in Christian circles is to say that you are premillenial. It's almost shocking to some people that you would ACTUALLY take the Bible LITERALLY. And there's still an undercurrent of anti-Semitism in a lot of amillenial circles. Off the top of my head, I can think of a prominent Texas pastor who, when teaching on Revelation, made a comment about Israel that walked right up to the line of anti-Semitism.
As for postmillenialism, I THINK it's just an outgrowth of premillenialism combined with preterism, though I can't say for sure where it comes from. All I can say is that I don't see either it or amillenialism in the Bible. If you take the Bible at its word, the clear conclusion is premillenialism. After that, you can debate over when the rapture happens. 😉
In the end, though, I don't allow eschatology to be a divisive issue with my brothers and sisters in Christ. I will not tolerate anti-Semitism, but beyond that, I just think that 1. It's possible for ANY of us to be wrong, 2. We're probably ALL wrong to SOME degree, and 3. We'll all know for sure sooner or later.

Yeah. That's another religion that teaches that humans have to pull themselves up by their own "bootstraps" in order to be humans. All other religions do that, except for orthodox Christianity. There's only one Man who ever was fully human. He freely confers/imputes (substitutionary atonement) true humanity on His people, then subsequently infuses Himself into them so that they can incrementally grow to be more human in this life (grow in grace/sanctification). No man can "make" himself righteous in any way, nor can he by any measure satisfy God's perfect law. Man has to have a Mediator, and the Mediator must be a Man - The Man. He's the only Way, and makes clear that no one approaches the One True God apart from Him.
