I hope they post these segments more often, that was hilarious!
I agree with you, his spontaneous wit and knowledge often trumps the script. So relaxed, so *real* reactions from the audience...proper art.
Agreed!!
With you on this!
Very much FUN!
Only a few times a year. It keeps it special.
This Audience Q&A is a comedic masterpiece. A delightful homage to the Carol Burnett Show (legend!) who pioneered the idea. Please do more. 🙏😁👍
Did you see the time she appeared during a Q&A? They post the clip she appeared in.
@@HardlinerTheGeek Ooo, gonna look that up! That sounds great.
Trevor Noah mastered the art of engaging with the audience. It's called #Betweenthescenes
@@HardlinerTheGeek -- I just found the clip you were referring to, when Carol Burnett was in the audience of Stephen's show and took over the Q&A. Epic! OMG, how funny! Thank you so much for telling us that clip existed. I hadn't seen it before .... but now my life is complete. Legendary! 😁👍❤
Olive how he just throws shit everywhere like jfk
No on the ‘stache, and yes on more audience Q&A segments on your RUclips channel!
You know why the audience said no for the moustache? Cause Eve say so :)
I think he looks great with or without it. But wifey wifey says goes lol
Evies vote out weighs any other majority
I say YES TO CAPTAIN AHAB BEARD!
This show is the only thing that kept me sane through the pandemic... Thank you, Stephen and every single person that makes this show happen. Love you all ❤
Stephen and Jimmy ❤️🌹🦋💖 my two that keep me sane 🦋🌹💖🌉
You are wrong about collidial silver. It fights upper respiratory infection. Big pharma is against education about this. Pennies to make. Won't keep you getting Covid-19. Neither do any of the vaccines.
@@richardmiller2754 another commenter on that segment works at a company that makes colloidal gold and silver. She said their company staff is getting death threats because they are telling people ingesting those products will kill you. She knows better.
I second that!😊❤
Why are people in here talking about colloidal silver?
You don't get to decide when you've had enough of the the Silmarillion. Stephen decides! 🤣
Appropriate reply to the dude who said "that's enough"
Much like Feanor deciding to lead the Noldor back to Middle Earth, through the shattering Helcaraxe, whereupon he reached another decision to destroy the elven ships as he continued to pursue Morgoth in order to recover the aforementioned Silmarils, although one would be recovered not by Feanor or his sons, but by Beren One-Hand....
Hell yeah it's his show you can't go to someone's else and tell said host that's enough when they are telling a story what a rude pecker head I don't blame Stephen Colbert get the fuck
@Mr Owl I have no clue what you just said but I'm scared and intrigued did you cast a spell on me
I'm not saying that audience member was a plant, because I don't think the show does that, but he provided the perfect feed line to tee up a funny ending from Stephen, and you could see that Stephen enjoyed it!
This is gold! I had the wonderful chance to meet him in person, and he is a good dude. Just like this. It's awesome that he takes the time to connect with the audience, and be a real human for his fans! Thanks.
Damn, Stephen is talented! Even when going off script answering audience questions, he's still hilarious and entertaining.
What he could do in interviews in character and off the cuff on the Colbert Report was unreal. It was truly a master class in improv.
@@mattmcrae you see his improv background when he invariably puts away his imagined props. His non-existent phone back in his pocket, his non-existent computer desk rolled away or any other non-existent prop being handed to someone off camera
@@merchillio I don't understand (bc I don't know anything about improv). Why does he put these things away? I've seen what you're talking about but I didn't know there was a reason to it. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thx
@@u2s5thmember obviously every improv league/group/troupe is different, but usually, you should keep the scene “coherent”.
For example, if someone mime opening a door, every actor (and spectator) understands that there a wall and a door there, so it would look weird if another actor walked right through where there was a imagined door a few seconds ago without opening it.
In the case of a coffee mug, for example, if you’re holding it (or pretend holding it) and you don’t mime putting it down, do you still have it in your hand? If you open your hand, did the mug fall to the ground?
It’s usually understood that everything you “bring” into a scene remains there until the end of the scene (unless explicitly gotten rid of).
I know improv is often mocked, often with good reason, but many actors started there and quality improvisation (key word: quality) is fun to watch.
This is nothing, really. Watch some of his old interviews ("out of character" or in, if you want). He can be way wittier. Here is tired Colbert, just a bit of banter.
Gold, gold, gold. Laughed so hard at the last one with the guy shouting, "That's enough!" And Stephen's response was exactly what I anticipated.
If Stephen ever gives the gig up, I'd buy a collection of these on their own.
His writers are great, but Stephen is such a quick, witty person on his own.
Steven is naturally funny with no script. This segment is really good!
Stephen's full on Tolkien geek was coming through, like Gollum taking over Smeagol.
Honestly, the Silmarillion is just over 300 pages. You too can be as nerdy as Stephen. Remembering all of the names is the only hard part, but there's an index!
@@shawn5346 Believe it or not, I actually ordered the book back in the 1970's. Yeah you had to special order the first edition for some reason. I was a teenager at the time and one of those naive people who was expecting a 'Lord of the Rings' type story. I was obliviously disappointed, and only eventually read the book in my twenties. I respect Stephen's love of the material, which I share, just not to the same degree.
And to be clear Stephen's intimate knowledge of Tolkien's works identifies him as a geek, not a nerd. I am a nerd. Because I think of things like--how was Orome riding through the forests of Middle Earth in the ages of the Two Trees in Valinor? After all the continent of Middle Earth was in complete darkness except for the stars. And trees can't photosynthesize using starlight. So how does that work?
I was prepared for the " two ways" double entendre but "plain" took me tf out 🤣💀
I think I spent one of my darkest times during the winter of 2020 at home, watching Steve quote Lord of the rings, play DnD, and go to New Zealand. Stephen has such an inspiring, glowing heartfelt nerdyness that just makes you excited to be a part of the word and all its terrifying glory again. His ability to conjure up all the Lord of the rings quotes, names and trivia at a moment's notice truly astounds and deeply impressed me. Believe me Stephen, you helps me through some of the darkest times of both the pandemic and my life. thank you
Did you see him play D&D with Matt Mercer? That was awesome
I love how Stephen's SC accent comes out when he starts talking about BBQ ... 😂😂
Tail on the shrimp gives a lot of flavor to the sauce.
Stephen saying “uh-oh” when asked that Lord of the Rings question was perfect. He knew he was going to be talking for a while.😂
He was spot on about tail-on shrimp. A diner should NOT have to pick through a sauce (scampi or otherwise) to eat shrimp...
I understand your frustration, but leaving the tails on adds considerable flavor to the sauce.
Of course, you can have it without the tails, but you are left with an inferior sauce. However good you think that sauce is, it would better if the tails had been left on.
Fact. Ask any chef, not from South Carolina.
Some food is messy, but it's usually worth the trouble. Just ask any Cajun, West Indian, Indonesian, or Buffalo Wingian.
But, I get it. Some people will take convenience over superior flavor any day, (hell, there are people who eat pizza with a knife and fork, ffs!). But, personally, if I'm not in the mood to get my fingers dirty, I'd rather order something without shrimp, than have it without the tails. But, I'm a pretty hard core foodie who would never substitute superior flavor for convenience. I'd rather have to take a shower after lunch, than have a slightly bland sauce.
I'm just sayin'...
@@robertglass3944 Try infusing the stock with shells to make your sauce. It takes time, but is worth the work. This is what we do in Maine with lobster. Sadly, I still see lobster's baby cousin overcooked, tail-on, and smothered in sauce. Chefs who do that to lobster get tossed onto the docks in Portland and are forced to repair broken traps.
@@debdescoteaux2602, that sounds legit. In hindsight, I can't believe I didn't think of it myself. It should be a snap, if you just put the skins and tails in a big teabag. Then you wouldn't have to dig them out at all.
Nice one! I will give that a try. Thanks for the tip.
Exactly. I hate burning the crap out of my fingers trying to get the tails off, because ain’t no way I’m cutting it off at the tail with a knife and missing out on that last piece of meat.
@@robertglass3944 I agree - and it's pretty easy to take the tail off with a knife and fork. Not that I'm shy about using my hands to eat seafood - I'm from Maryland after all, lol!
Great bonus segment. If Evie hates it, don’t do it. Sound policy. I LOVE Stephen Colbert❤️
The trumpet players reaction when the audience member says “that’s enough” is brilliant!
Yes! I wish they had a shot of the whole band and how they reacted to "That's enough!" lol
Time stamp 5:01 :)
People forget Stephen is an amazing improv comedian. These little snippets prove it!! ❤
Stephen talking about Shrimp and BBQ has the same energy as Jon Stewart talking about Pizza. lol
And equally wrong.
(I have no opinion on the shrimp actually, apart from that I don’t want em in my mouth)
Love when Stephen pulls out the Carolina accent. I lived in NC for 30+ years (home of the best bbq EVER) now in the PNW. My grown daughter and I will do that whenever NC or the south is brought up in a conversation.
I'm with Stephen in this nasty stuff you call bbq
The best BBQ is made in Lowcountry South Carolina. North Carolina BBQ is just mincemeat with vinegar added. I lived in Winston-Salem for 16 years
All of you are wrong. KC.
While you are completely wrong about BBQ (KC style is always the best), I must agree that as a transplant to the PNW... they have terrible bbq.
oh my god yes! the shrimp tail thing! I have seen this and wondered, am I wrong? Yet, now I know I was right.
Italians leave the tail on for shrimp scampi
You are wrong. Lol the tail is left on to add essential flavor. When you remove the tail before cooking, you lose like, half the flavor. They leave it for a reason.
And, it's not like you have to pick through it with your fingers as he suggests. You get utensils at a restaurant, and it's very easy to just use a fork to cut through the end of the shrimp to lop off the tail and push it to the side. Not messy or a problem at all.
I loved the quiet "Uh-oh" from off screen when he starts the LOTR answer and the guy from the audience who shouted "That's enough!"
That clap back at the end was beautiful. There will never be enough lotr
"You seem like a nice gentleman, but you gotta get the fuck outta here." 😂😂😂
He’s such a nerd lol I love it
Thank you Stephen for your comment about shrimp tails in sauce! So annoying!
I was raised asian and we eat the tail.
@@fuckyou_youtube Loving the implication that you were "raised" a certain way, like a lapsed Catholic, but might somehow no longer be Asian.
@@fuckyou_youtube Asian..speak for yourself and your household! unless it's crisp-fried shrimp, nobody will eat that tail
The tail adds like twice as much flavor. There's a reason they leave it.
@susan ruthroff no. When in a sauce like a pasta dish, you want to eat everything together. Not fish out the shrimp to get the tail off
I can't believe I actually caught Stephen make a mistake with lotr lore!! He's wrong, the valar did not live with the high elves in Tirion, they lived with the Vanyar in Valmar, which was another city within the plain of Valinor.
Also the two trees were not in Tirion, they were also in Valmar. I can't believe Stephen could make such a big mistake 😄
And actually *none* of that is in LotR, it's all in the Silmarilliion.
stephen was commenting on what was visible in the released image. seems maybe you missed the context, or the image.
He is definitely in the Lord of the Rings show.
We in SC don’t have much going for us but we do claim Stephen!❤️❤️❤️
I don't think I've ever heard anyone tell Stephen to shut up about LOTR🤣🤣🤣
This worked like charm on "The Carol Burnett Show". I wish he'd do this more often, it's great to see him working off the cuff.
I take that back. His response to the Lord of the Rings question objector sealed the deal. 🤣🤣🤣
Love how southern he got when it comes to food.
Thank you Steven for finally telling the truth about when you should take the tails off shrimp!
My God, what a level ... I guess you need to have enjoyed the US educational system to really appreciate this.
Finally... I wanted to hear Stephen talk in his native accent for so long
Everyone knows not to ask Stephen a LOTR question, you’ll never get to the end of the answer 🤣🤣🤣
Is it bad I wanted to hear more?
@@monkmayfair3487 no, and Stephen's response to the heckler was 100% correct. lol
@@monkmayfair3487 every time Stephen talks about LOTR we learn more about it from the leading scholar in its study!!
@@justindion4394 should expect it really 🤣
I love when Stephen goes and geeks out on LOTR
Tails on a shrimp in sauce is indeed an abomination! - Signed Someone From the South
It's really not. Taking the tail off before cooking removes half the flavor. Now THAT'S an abomination.
Spot on Elizabeth Schuler.
@@motiemo , what are you smoking?
I love you Stephen Colbert
🗣Evie McGeeeeeeee...come quick!
In 2019 I was went to the Colbert show and he did the Q&A thing - was awesome 👏
Please post more of these on RUclips for those of us who can’t get to a live show! This was a riot!
He’s right about mustard
His LOTR knowledge is astounding, that's a 1100 page book and it's in pretty small print...
The made me smile so big and LOL multiple times. Thank you, Stephen.
"Who said that? who said that?"
Melkor.
In 1954, W.H. Auden wrote "No fiction I have read in the last five years has given me more joy than The Fellowship of the Ring.” Stephen, no joke I have heard in the last two years has given me more joy than your response to the Fellowship of the Ring question.
It was a yes or a no question. Not an essay. Lmao. He can go for days with LOTR!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I could listen to Stephen pontificate about LOTR all day. And that’s not hyperbole because he could actually do it.
I've been watching you since the days of The Colbert Report. Over the years I've agreed with you 99.98% of the time and in my humble opinion you're the best in the business. Having said that and with the greatest love and respect, tearfully I must say on a good day N.C.BBQ is better. Sorry. But hey you were right about the Shrimp and the Moustache. Cheers from Canada.
Wise man ❤
Love seeing him off-the-cuff, just interacting with the audience. Creates a great atmosphere for everyone & makes the show go smoothly when everyone's already feeling good. I hope these uploads become a regular thing.
Sir Colbert thank you for both the Colbert Report and being the host of this show your comedy makes everyday well worth it
I’ve seen enough interviews to know that: “I cannot reveal whether i am gonna be on the [LotR] show”, (4:27) means yes.
*TO WHOMEVER RUNS THE LATE SHOW ACCOUNT:* Please edit & post more of these. We love them. They mean a lot. Thank you!
Damn! No one should stop Colbert from his LOTR passion
Nice old fella: "That's enough!"
Stephen: "You have no power here!"
No script, brilliant humor!! As simple as that! Mr. Colbert is a genius! 😃👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I absolutely adore it whenever he goes off on a LOTR rant, I'm either reminded of something I forgot forever ago or learn something completely new.
I've never read the books or watched any of the movies, but I love it when Stephen shows off his LotR knowledge.
Stephen’s best jokes are when he doesn’t have a script, genuinely funny man
They cut it too soon! Did the old fella get kicked out?! Lol
It's the Honesty, that makes clips like these, so Heartwarming in this Pandemic. 👍💖🇺🇲
The fact that Stephen said "uhoh" while the audience member was asking the LOTR question, shows he is Very aware of his Addition- hahahalol🤣🤣🤣🤣
That wasn't Stephen! I think it was one of the producers realizing that they were going to be there a while
Who in their right mind stops Stephen in the middle of a LoTR rant and thinks they'll get away with it? I'm always amazed. I could watch him just keep going till he passes out from not having taken a breath for several weeks.
Exactly! The worst part is that I think I have a passing grasp of LOTR. Until my Muslim friend outstripped me by going the Horse and Rider was Old English Poem and then going on more from there...... Geez....
i love that stephen pulled out the accent when he talked about barbecue 😂😂 i literally only learned today that bbq is a big deal in the south and every state apparently argues about it? and the tolkien bit was great. tho i do wonder since i heard they only have the rights to film stories in the second age and not the first, how are they going to incorporate tiriom-upon-tùna?
There are maps of the south by barbecue sauce, and some states have more than one kind. Here in NC, people will fight over eastern style (vinegar-based) vs. Lexington/western style (ketchup-based). It’s hilarious and delicious!
I love when he talks about South Carolina, I get just as proud as he does lol
Exactly. I know it's not the best place in the country, and boy, does it have its problems politically. But it's home.
@@missright9159 agreed.
Henry McMaster is the real abomination of South Carolina. Don't get me started on Lindsey Graham.
One of the few things I find better than vinegar when it comes to treating 'overly flavourful meat' (IE pork, especially from an boar) is alcohol. Vinegar adds more flavour, alcohol seems to strip off some of the less desired elements.
Caramelized onion is very good on pizza, but I cannot say strongly enough give caramelized leeks a chance. I often make pretty serious pizza, and one of the better ingredients is browned beef, with caramelized leeks or onions naturally, you can just fry them together first. Still, if I'm limited on choices, I'll usually take the salty trio, bacon, feta, and black olives. Hard to screw that up!
Yesss!!! The audience Q&A is back!
We love these videos.
And we want more!!!
Stephen, THANK YOU for your Shrimp-in-Sauce Tail Tale. Truer (foodie) words were never spoken!
Lmao the barbeque bit, I'm from Charleston, SC so I agree. NC has crap barbeque compared to SC
This is my favorite part of attending live tapings.
Sorry Stephen, but Ungoliant did not poison the two trees, she sapped all of the light essence from them in her gluttony, which is why she also wanted to consume the silmarils.
As far as I remember Melkor drove a spear (retranslated from german) into the trees and ungoliath sucked on them thereby poisoning them.
My understanding was that she drained them and become so engorged and wanted more that even Melkor fled from her.
@@rif9576 That's correct. Which supports that Stephen actually described the situation incorrectly. There was no actual poisoning of the trees at all.
One of the Shows I need to watch to keep me SANE !!!!! Thank You and Your Cru !!!!
I like these Q&A clips better than Meanwhile. I enjoy when Stephan ad-libs.
I didn't know Stephan enjoys fishing. Good for him.
That was awesome! I loved that.
I am greatful for the hard work and support from the Colbert team, and for Stephen and John getting me through so much!
Gotta love him!!
I live in Marlboro County, " 843". I just learned that Stephen is a native of South Carolina and I just watched this and when he said 843 I was freaking shocked man for real. He is spot on about the shrimp, and the barbecue 😂😂😂 ❤
The way he morphs into a different being at the mention of LOTR 😂😂😂

the comedy timing of the steps is perfect
They should have a sign at the door when you enter the theater: "DO NOT get Stephen talking about Lord of the Rings or we'll be here all day. Some of us want to get home to our families."
15 years… can’t get enough of Colbert!
Stevens LOTR knowledge/excitement rivals my knowledge/excitement for Star Trek. U go Steven!
I'm just wondering if Colbert is ever gonna try all the sandwiches mentioned by his guests. I would like to see that.
would be hard to try Goldblum's sandwich ...
A 'stache means more Esteban Colberto, though.
I love this man. He's a mess!!! 😅🤣😂❤🥰
The tail is left on the shrimp to add flavor. There's a lot of flavor in the tail so it's actually pretty dumb to remove it before cooking.
I click on the audience question videos with the hope that there will be a LOTR question. Wasn't disappointed!
Every Lord Of The Rings questions requires a ten-minute answer from Stephen
I love when he talks about LOTR lore. It warms my heart.
So never ask Stephen Colbert about Lord of the rings unless you really like Lord of the rings.
"Why don't you just rub mayonnaise on it?"
Alabama white-sauce has entered the chat.
Gross…. Figures that Alabama would go out of their way to ruin something… 🤮
I love this. Reminds me of the Carol Burnette Show. The audience questions were my favorite part of the show. So much fun!!!!! Encore!!!!
His LOTR knowledge always astounds me, he should write a book about his love for Tolkien
