The 2022 GR86 is an exercise in frustration: if Toyota took the basic body shell and put in a high-revving 4-cylinder NA engine rather than the RTV disaster from Subaru, that would make it a much better car. FR, high-revving NA, 6-speed manual and a genuine reliable Toyota engine and I would buy it.
Well we heard this kind of news when the FR-S was coming back to the toyota line up as the GT86. I am expecting a few tweaks and a changing in the styling.
I would imagine that they would love to break some records before new gas combustion cars are gone. Their last years could be there best years for sports cars.
They already know the GR Corolla engine fits in the current GR86. I think they just do that. It makes the most sense. I would rather that with some better brakes, adaptive dampers, wider tires, and since dreaming a nicer interior, than a hybrid setup.
Could this be the Celica based on the Lexus IC chassis which is already RWD bias? ... If BMW partnership is no longer they should move the Supra name to something based on the LC500 chassis.
talking about the hybrid system from the crown, then about the 3c engine from the gr yaris makes me believe that it might be a confusion about the name of the car. In reality, this could be the new celica gr4, hybrid set-up, 300+ hp, awd.
Fantastic to see that a next gen gr 86 is going to happen ❤. This gr 86 will replace the supra .Toyota nissan and mazda keeping japanese sports car alive.
If Toyota is going to use a hybrid for a new 86, I hope they put the electric motor in the rear of the car to even out the weight distribution, and push to keep the weight at 3000 pounds or less. Putting the electric motor at the rear should improve the weight distribution (currently about 55/45) and keeping the weight down should keep the handling intact. I wouldn't shed any tears over losing the Subaru flat-4 motor. The new one sounds better than Gen 1, but the sound is still unattractive and rough.
I swear if this another thing about the turbo inline 4 test model... There was one during the first gen as well. It's not a sign of much for the platform, it's probably their best platform to test new small performance engines however.
Have Subaru dig through their parts bin ...pull out the old 3.6 6cyl ....take off one head and use the connecting rods as "dummy" rods to balance . Then you have a low cg 3cyl that runs smooth like a 6cyl . The parts count is greatly reduced ...assembly simplified ...turbo plumbing becomes much simpler ...
To get a 3rd gen GR86 if Toyota and Subaru are going to go their separate ways and there's not to be another BRZ after this generation for Subaru, a GR86 on the Lexus RC platform would be the closest platform for a third generation GR86 with GR Yaris/GR Corolla engine 1.6T 3-cylinder engine. I don't think 86 fans would be anywhere near upset by that. Everybody that's complaining about not getting a turbocharged GR86, if it's being put into development in Japan right now to be ready in the next 4 years, you better be ready for it, even if it means going mild hybrid while still trying to find ways to be lightweight. If the next gen GR86 is to be on some next gen Lexus RC platform using a mild hybrid setup with the 1.6T engine and 6-speed manual while retaining RWD, you better take it for what it is even if it's going to cost more than the current gen GR86. Be grateful if this is happening for you 86 fans, but always wanted it to be turbocharged. It sounds like a grain of salt, but it appears insiders with connections for Toyota Japan know more than insiders with connections for Toyota USA ever would.
I’m not surprised. Toyota forgot how to make sports cars so the GR products are partnering with other brands that still have sports car operations. These next iterations will most likely be Toyota manufactured 💯
I also heard that the GR86 will be discontinued after 2025. I hope it’s wrong. I definitely wouldn’t pay $44,000 for a GR86. $30,000 to $35,000 is a decent price range but not $44,000.
2025 GR86 will be larger and heavier. It's going away of that back to basics Miata competitor vibe. It'll be in the more upper luxury GT cruiser category. For sure that's what all those wanting the car to have turbo ( and now plus hybrid ) are asking for a long time.
if I had to guess, this is most likely not gonna happen. None of it. Not the hybrid or the redesign at 2025. it first of all would go against what the gr86 is even about lmao, and they also would definitely not redesign it this soon.
If the “new” 86 was built off of the IS platform it would be more of an actual successor to the old Corolla. It would also be quite poetic too, being that the engineer who started the IS/Altezza line is the same one who lead the Corolla AE86 project.
It was very interesting that the GR86 would have more power now with a Turbo hybrid engine. I hope that they continue to be RWD and have a 6MT available for us enthusiasts. The new external design doesn't look that engaging; hopefully, the production car looks better.
Despite the internet’s cries, for gen 2, Toyota doubled down on what made gen 1 great and fixed the issues it had. They ended up with an amazing car because of cost restraints and an understanding of what the 86 is suppose to be. The Supra is also a great successor to what made the OG Supra great. These rumors does not sound like Toyota would call it 86. They won’t pull what Honda did with the integra
Am I the only one who think that they should make a corolla coupe hybrid, awd drive, sell it for 22k to 25k and call it a day? They did that with the old celica and the corolla hybrid fwd was faster than i expected. Maybe tune it a bit more to get more power and less efficiency. That would be awesome!
TOYOTA, i am in! The most likely scenario is that supra 2.0 will be discarded, while supra 3.0 will get 400+ hp or maybe toyota will use some in-home engine suitable for hybridization
Gosh, I hope it doesn’t look anything like that, especially the front! The ‘16 FRS I had looked okay and the newer GR86 looks great in my opinion but this?!!
really tired of people b*tching about how the 86 is underpowered, how it should of had turbo when it first came out, I hope 𝒊𝒇 this comes out it'll keep offering the NA version, like how when the OG 86 it was offered in levin and trueno model
If they add a hybrid system in it. It won't be a lightweight sportcar anymore. Batteries plus electric motors (even they are small) can push the weight well pass 3000lbs.
Sounds like Toyota wants to ditch certain collaborations. Seems like they are in a transition of coming out with performance hybrids and are experimenting to see what sticks.
I don't think most sports car buyers want a hybrid system. If Toyota is serious about electrification, they should use this opportunity to come up with an electric sports car or an electric Supra
Just let the 2.4 breathe. Give it a moderate and reasonable supercharger. Then simply improve the ability for the stock motor to handle the extra stress in compression. This is such grade one tech. Let the car be what it is as it will be the last of its kind. That 2.4 motor could push from 225 hp to 280hp with more torque. All this with little done to the heads and nothing given up in weight. Just makes perfect sense. But oh no…
So, whoever wants an affordable rwd sportscar that can be worked on should jump at the GR86/BRZ in the next couple of years then. If rumors are true the new one will be effing expensive and impossible to work on at home.
Feeling maybe GR86 Face lift first. This car sounds like an MR2 or something. If newer vers GR86 think 2027 sounds more likely. Interesting to hear though.
I just hope it doesn’t look as ugly as that rendering. No priusify it. Current gen looks gorgeous. Just has shit engine. Give it the gr yaris powertrain and no hybrid. Keep it light and close to the 2800lbs range.

It sounds like a grain of salt, but it appears insiders with connections for Toyota Japan know more than insiders with connections for Toyota USA ever would.
if these rumors are true.......the price is going to jump.
I’m not surprised. Toyota forgot how to make sports cars so the GR products are partnering with other brands that still have sports car operations. These next iterations will most likely be Toyota manufactured 💯
supra i4 didnt get MT. so they owe us this and i rather take that 3-cylinder turbo even if it is slower than 400z or supra i6.
I also heard that the GR86 will be discontinued after 2025. I hope it’s wrong. I definitely wouldn’t pay $44,000 for a GR86. $30,000 to $35,000 is a decent price range but not $44,000.
Front end looks way better in that concept, I hate the current gen body style from the front, first gen was better.
As long as it doesn’t look like the car in the thumbnail we should be good
2025 GR86 will be larger and heavier. It's going away of that back to basics Miata competitor vibe. It'll be in the more upper luxury GT cruiser category. For sure that's what all those wanting the car to have turbo ( and now plus hybrid ) are asking for a long time.
I mean the 86 always had more similarities to a Celica as far as styling and things go.
The 3rd gen 86 is going to become what the MKV Supra should have been all along. Premium price tag, fast in it's class, bulletproof, 100% Japanese.
if I had to guess, this is most likely not gonna happen.
@@MaddNomad1015 cept that the is is more for sedans and are the 3000+ pound cars
Love the gen 2 pokemon starter pic in the beginning haha
do you anticipate that there will be a hybrid manual transmission?
2nd gen is the best Pokemon generation!
It was very interesting that the GR86 would have more power now with a Turbo hybrid engine. I hope that they continue to be RWD and have a 6MT available for us enthusiasts.
The new external design doesn't look that engaging; hopefully, the production car looks better.
Probably mild hybrid like the 6mt Fiat 500. However in that car all it did was give me extra bite for low rpm use.
I don't think you understand what a 86 is. lol
They could use the 2.4T in a mid/rear config, no?
already? didn't they just drop this current gen a couple years ago?
Toyota is going through great times rn. Honda take notes!
Looks intriguing, but at 2025 I hope I would have saved enough to switch my GR86 for a Lexus.
I hope Toyota makes a gr86 with the G16-E (3 Cyl Turbo) no hybrid . That would keep the price down and make it simpler.
If It is indeed a hybrid with over 300 horse power. I might be considering this my next vehicle even though typically I'm not a 2 door guy.
TOYOTA, i am in! The most likely scenario is that supra 2.0 will be discarded, while supra 3.0 will get 400+ hp or maybe toyota will use some in-home engine suitable for hybridization
I hope they don't make it a hybrid and simply put the 1.6L turbo in it would make for an amazing car that's the way id buy it coming from a gr86 owner
Gosh, I hope it doesn’t look anything like that, especially the front! The ‘16 FRS I had looked okay and the newer GR86 looks great in my opinion but this?!!
Love your videos and thank you for allowing us to keep up with Toyota news. This sounds good.
really tired of people b*tching about how the 86 is underpowered, how it should of had turbo when it first came out, I hope 𝒊𝒇 this comes out it'll keep offering the NA version, like how when the OG 86 it was offered in levin and trueno model
Honestly they should’ve called it something else anyways
I still wish they made a convertible version of it.
Mx5
@@EdLo. Doesn't have the HP of the 86/BRZ
@@thebackstabber9272 true... it is like 300lbs lighter tho
For me the 2.4 turbo version makes no sense. I would make:
1. G16E WITHOUT hybrid
2. M20A-FKS with hybrid
If they add a hybrid system in it. It won't be a lightweight sportcar anymore. Batteries plus electric motors (even they are small) can push the weight well pass 3000lbs.
The powertrain would not be that robust. It would overtake the Supra.
Sounds like Toyota wants to ditch certain collaborations. Seems like they are in a transition of coming out with performance hybrids and are experimenting to see what sticks.
Hope they do something about the rtv issue
I'm wondering if the Supra will get the S58 for the final 2025 year hmmmm
But oh no…
Why not use the 2.5 out of the Camry and make it RWD? Maybe more power and sacrifice some mpg?
Turns out that 2025 version is basically the same as the 2024. Too bad because those renderings look much better.
We dont want no hybrid! !
Great news, put an actual reliable inline or v4 engine in it.
Need a targa for sure either on the 86 or the Supra.
Kirk, the A100 GR Supra will happen.
